Alright.. so I ordered Pho to go, and after waiting for for a couple of minutes they told me they actually made the wrong soup - they had made Bun Bo instead.. they did offer to remake my Pho but would take a bit more time, or if interested I could just take my wrong order.. I was extremely hesitant and my non confrontational self took the wrong order home.. Well! It is like they knew what I needed that night. This was so delicious, full of flavor, it was maybe a bit saltier for my taste but still would order it again! next time I would probably ask for more vegetables, but everything was very well proportioned. Me and my bestie went the other week. It's very small, cute and intimate. It feels like your at someone's else home, very cozy. The food is amazing, everything is cooked to order. So you can customize and ask for things you might not want in your Pho or entree. I finally stepped in here for lunch. Although the location is a bit questionable, once you step inside you realize it is now going to be your favorite neighborhood restaurant. First of all, I saw the menu had a cup of pho as an appetizer. What! Usually I get pho as an entire meal plus leftovers, so it was really nice to just get a sampling of one of my favorite comfort foods. And yes it was delicious. I ordered the green bean stir fry for lunch and it was so delicious. I did not leave anything on the plate. I came back in the same day for dinner with my husband. A find for me. The egg foo young is the best I've had chicken and shrimp with vegetables in a light tempura like batter with a side of delicious brown gravy. The crispy shrimp and fried egg roll appetizers are both very fresh and savory. This is one of the few spots in San Antonio that I've found the Vietnamese crepe bahn xeo - crispy and fresh. We ordered a to go order and the gentleman on the phone was very nice. Picked up and the order was right on time (he said 20 minutes). So excited to get home with spring rolls that my mom says are usually wonderful! Sadly both orders tasted like rancid grease. I called to let them know and he said it was not old grease and he would have employees taste them, but did not offer to refund or any kind of replacement (I wouldn't have wanted a replacement today though). I have been eating here for 15 years. The food is always great and authentic. The sauces are homemade, a great improvement over so-called Asian spices available in stores. The cha gio (spring rolls) is made with rice paper, not won ton wraps you might find elsewhere. There was a strong flavor of something I didn't recognize but I finished the whole bowl.....Next I had the salt and pepper shrimp and fried rice. Impressed, actually, by this place. Unexpected, anyhow. Very small establishment; the dining area could not have been much bigger than my master bedroom! Lovingly decorated, knew that Vietnamese food was the way to go since the Chef Owner is Vietnamese. Funny, since there are three pages of Chinese dishes (including the lunch specials), but only one each on Vietnamese and Thai! Though, I do know enough regarding the industry to understand this; Chinese food is much more lucrative! Since they offer it, personally wanted to make a point to try something from each cuisine. Chinese dishes definitely Americanized, the one Thai dish we had was not enough data, but the Vietnamese was authentic enough. Started with some *Thai Tea, which had way too much ice (pretty much all the way to the top), even though I tried to request light ice. Powder for sure, so Thai Tea is always good for a condensed milk lover like me, but not anything special here. Chinese dish was *Triple Delight, which was good for the price. A tad excessive on the gravy, and only three shrimp, tail-on- but portion size made up for this; well cooked vegetables and meat. We asked to add tofu (apparently off-menu item), which was a great choice on my part! Served with rice. From Thai, we had the *Thai Curry Soup. Made with yellow curry and coconut, likely watered down and added seasonings. Interesting choice, surprisingly soothing. Bamboo shoots, carrots, chicken. Satisfying, not at all spicy, but the watered down aspect was not the best. Had to go with two from Vietnamese! Sadly, out of the powder she needed for the Ban Xeo Vietnamese crepes; maybe next time? What was hot instead was excellent anyhow! *Bun Bo Xao, the lemongrass beef with bean sprouts, lettuce, and vermicelli rice noodles. Meat was very well cooked, aromatic and flavorful! Noodles not mushy. Delish. *Chicken Supreme. Cellophane noodles with ginger, egg, green onion, and mushrooms. Love that she used woodear mushrooms. Whatever seasonings she used were genius, and the noodles were even pan fried to crispiness in some parts which was awesome. Personal favorite dish tonight. Julianna was a lovely waitress we were the only ones here tonight, but not sure why, the food was delicious! Sure, a little Americanized on the Chinese and Thai (she should stick with what she knows best!), but great prices and overall excellent dishes. I have been coming to Vietnam Gardens for over 17 years! Christine is an amazing chef! Today we were in the mood for soup & pork spring rolls. We got the same soup but fixed differently. We had V16 the Bun Bo Soup which is a spicy beef broth with rice noodles. Sam had beef with extra vegetables and spicy. I had chicken with extra mushrooms and not nearly as spicy. This was perfect on a winter day. Christine is a small business owner. Her tables are spread out to allow for social distancing. But it's a Monday afternoon at 1:30 and we were the only ones dining in. Please visit her. Ordered general chicken, sweet and sour chicken, shrimp egg rolls, crab Rangoon and some pad Thai. Lemme just say everything was hit and fresh and yummy! The egg rolls are very small just a heads up but it was a yummy little egg roll packed with a bunch of flavor. Crab rangoons were packed with yummy ness inside. While the menu is extensive, the food left a lot to be desired. My companions and I had three different Vietnamese dishes, and we agreed later that, were we in an academic setting, the grade would be C or perhaps C+. This restaurant really seems like they are trying to do too much. Vietnamese, Thai, and Chinese are three very different types of food and you can either do one very well or all three mediocrely. I ordered the chicken pho and a Chinese combo plate for my wife and I. The pho was served with thick rice noodles, usually used with Thai food not Vietnamese pho and the broth had little flavor. The sememe chicken and beef & broccoli tasted like mall food. I really wanted to like this restaurant. Hopefully, they will narrow down the menu and focus on perfecting one type. I love Vietnamese and Thai food (which I didn't try) so I would love to give them another shot. read more

Been here before and the food is pretty good. Representing 3 different cooking styles Chinese, Vietnamese and Thai ( yum) on 5 different menus there is no shortage of choices. The menus are posted on the tables under glass which is unique. Makes for a fun conversation on a first date. Not to worry there is also a scannable menu that makes for easy reading. I recommend starting with the Vietnamese string rolls. They come on your choice of pork, shrimp or vegetable. They are delicious with the fish sauce and hot chile. ( not going to ever play you kids, Usually they are really well done. As of this writing they came out overcooked and bland. Maybe an off day for the kitchen) I also enjoy the Jasmine tea. This round will be Beef Curry. A traditional Thai dish but made in Vietnamese style which has the curry in a gravy rather than a sauce and not super spicy. This plate is pretty heavy with veggies and light on beef. (I forgot about the meat shortage) The decor is pretty straight forward traditional asian restaurant done feng shu. The overal place is very clean and its nice to see the aquarium taken care of. This round my server is less attentive than the gentleman during the week. Didn't know alot about the menu when asked BUT was willing to find out. That is a huge point in her favor. The owner came out to check on the other guest and myself. She greeted both of us with a friendly smile. The Thai menu is usually what I stY with so maybe I will challenge mysef to venture off again, or perhaps not after all I know what I like and they do that ( for me at least) pretty well. read more
