It was pouring rain out when we pulled up to the sketch looking house. We parked in front of the door walked up to place our to-go order. As soon as we got to the door, one of the employees asked us to go back to our car and call him if we wanted to order food. We asked for a menu, he said it's only online and to call is the only way to place an order. The place inside looked like a house/office that was in disarray. So happy we found this place in the small town of Freeport. They were closed on the inside but offered take out which was perfect for an outside picnic. The service was phenomenal from the start. Super friendly from the phone to the in car delivery and we loved it. So much food so consider sharing when you order. Love Li's Place. The food tastes amazing and you get a good amount and prices are not bad. Since her place no longer offers inside seating, but a pick-up restaurant, it's fine with me. I did see recently where some picnic tables were placed, so if you go here, it's still pickup, not a sit down place to eat. Maybe someday that will change. The service is great! I was looking for some good take out for a stay-at-home dinner and a movie date night and wanted to find something the wife would really like to match the holiday RomCom I would be probably be enduring this evening. Not being a big fan of Chinese food but knowing she was and hearing great things from friends, I ordered some takeout from Li's for the wife and I. We got an order of General Tso's, fried rice, BBQ pork, crab rangoon and chicken strips (let's just say we have leftovers for days!). The crab rangoon was the best i've ever had... light, crispy, and with a lot of well flavored cream cheese. Chicken strips were excellent as well, also with a light and crispy coating with moist, flavorful chicken. The BBQ pork was not dry and very tender with good flavor as well. The General's chicken was also very good with a sweet tangy sauce that was perfect and the fried rice? I think that almost surprised me the most. Very moist, and not dry like so many others, with a unique flavor that was almost smoky... very good! While Chinese is still not in my top 5, I do have to say that I am very happy that we have this great place so close by... and I guarantee my wife is happy as I will be a much more willing participant in the future, at least with dinner if not the movie! read more

I never knew this place existed until 12/24/22 when a friend told me about it. Actually, she raved about it. Being that I was considering my options for my Christmas Chinese feast I decided to give it a try rather than my usual place (literally around the corner). Let me start with a few caveats. I'm not Chinese, nor have I ever cooked a Chinese meal (although my father became a prolific Chinese cook for health reasons). I DID spend 26 years in food service, and helped develop some signature tastes and dishes in my years as a sous chef. And I also have enjoyed some of the best Chinese food in North America. And I have a pretty discerning palate. WITH THAT SAID... I ordered a variety of appetizers to see how they prepared some of my ordinarily favorite offerings. I bought far more than I could consume in one sitting but wanted to try their variety. First, I tried the crab rangoons. The outside was nicely fried, crispy and not over or under done and not at all oily. Sadly, the filling was the absolutely blandest that I have ever encountered. No indication of anything other than cream cheese, to the point where I doubt that they even waved a picture of a crab over these as they prepared them. The dumplings were okay, but nothing special. They looked and tasted pretty much like every other pan fried dumpling that I ever saw. I didn't think that they tasted "off" but the dipping sauce was so garlic-y that it tainted the flavor. (And I LOVE garlic sauces) Next, I opened the boneless ribs. Acknowledging that every chef has their own process (case in point being Buck's Naked versus most barbecue places), if these were dry rubbed they were barely so. While the meat was very tender, it was fairly devoid of flavor. I actually missed the messy sweet and sour sauce that graces most orders of boneless Chinese pork nearly everywhere. By the time I ate the dumplings, downed half of the rangoons, and "enjoyed" some meat, I was pretty much done. Tomorrow I will crack open the Wonton soup and see how they treated that, and have one or both of the "Spring rolls"; depending on the flavor. One last (minor?) observation..... There was just about enough dipping sauce for the dumplings ( I'm still not sure whether that's a good or bad thing ), and plenty of duck sauce. Missing was hot mustard, commercial or homemade. Now, I have made my own hot mustard for decades and really like my duck sauce to have a little hot mustard "zip"; usually a 4/1 ratio. I will fix that problem tomorrow. My conclusion? Now I can say I have been to Li's. The question of value becomes a matter of quantity versus quality. I got a lot of stuff for the money. So far, not so much in flavor or creativity. So I will get multiple meals/snacks out of my order and I will never tell my friends of my disappointment. But the next time I feel an overwhelming desire for Chinese, I will return to the place around the corner where I know what my food will taste like. As I expect it to. read more

First of all I just want it to be known that I'm Chinese and came from China so I know wtf I'm talking about. I ordered the Mapo tofu, and it caught me off guard by how good it is. Fried rice was also legit and they do give you a decent portion for the money. Also order the hot and sour soup but I forgot to tell them not to add mushrooms and it wasn't very spicy at all but it was my fault for not telling them. Finding good Asian food in Maine can be a challenge, so I was really lucky that I found Li's Place within my first two months after moving to Portland. I was drawn by the delicious aroma coming from Li's stand by North Face two summers ago and decided to give his chicken lo mein a try. Let's just say I'm glad I did. After I finished eating the lo mein, Li told me that he has a restaurant on West Street, so I went to look for it the next time I was in Freeport. It is not on Main Street, so you definitely need to be looking for it to find it. The space is tiny with only three tables for two and two tables for four. Most people seem to be getting their orders to go, so I've always been able to get a table. I've tried a few other dishes here, and everything has always come out delicious. Nevertheless, my favorite dish is still the chicken lo mein. Every time I go, a teenage boy whom I assume is Li's son works the register, takes orders, and waits tables. It's not Michelin level of service, but he's always polite and friendly. Orders also always come out quickly. Li's Place has definitely become my favorite Chinese restaurant in Maine. read more

Driving home from bar harbor, Maine to CT. We decided to stop at Freeport, Maine and wanted chinese food.. So glad we went with Li's and not china rose, because of reviews. Owner was very sweet, she said unable to find staff, hence no dine in. Food is excellent taste, ordered chicken lo mein, the noodles taste very fresh. Beef with broccoli was excellent too. Steamed dumplings great filling ok dough. Lo mein good. Fried rice was better the next day. Ok. Egg roll great. Now something strange. I love Chinese mustard so asked for some. I put it on everything. They don't serve it. I was told they make all there own sauces but don't like mustard so don't make it . Whaaaaaaaaat!!!!!! They served little packets is soy sauce so how about some packets of mustard!!!! The place looks like a house which isn't a bad thing. But it will throw you off at first I was a little tempted to not go but I went in. The young men there wasn't overly friendly but he did come in and check up on us a few times. The rice was over cooked and black not every grain but most. The chicken fingers was crunchy and hard to eat. The dumpings weren't bad just not my favorite because I'm not a huge fan of thick dumpling wrappers but I know that's how they make it.
