The verdict on the two pizzas: The Buffalou Chicken had good flavor, we all agreed. But most of the pizza was crust - we wanted a bit more of a topping layer. Still it tasted good, and we liked they included little packets of oregano, parmesan, and hot chili flakes as toppings. The Lou pizza was also tasty, and the fresh sliced tomatoes on the top provided a nice tangy flavor. Also with this one, we felt the crust was a little much and we wanted more topping. But maybe that is part of the "deep dish" style - it's a bit different than some of the other deep dish pizzas we've tried. This pizza is good quality, good tasting, and very filling. It's tasty, although I wouldn't say it's my favorite, as I'm still on a quest for that favorite pizza. My personal preference nowadays is a thinner and crisper crust with a wood-fired taste and flavorful toppings, so keep that in mind when reading my review. This is a Chicago classic, worthy of its reputation, it's good stuff, I enjoyed it, and I'd order again.

The interior is an understated, tasteful, comfortable, semi-hippie blend of artwork and plants. Last visit, I enjoyed perfect fried eggplant, and one of the very best Margherita pizzas (here, the "Margaret") that I've ever had. Real, fresh mozzarella; real, fresh basil; and, maybe most important, actual slices of red, fresh tomatoes (not just cheating with a mere tomato sauce, as some places do). This time, I started with a real bargain of a tossed green salad. It had so many ingredients (by my rough count, around a dozen) that I couldn't even identify some. A heaping, colorful, healthful and appealing salad that puts to shame the side salads that most other restaurants merely "phone in". (The balsamic vinaigrette is strong, so I'm glad that I stuck to my rule of ordering it on the side, so that I could control the amount used.) Pizza: Pepperoni and mushroom, with FRESH mushrooms, correctly sliced (large, flat slices taken top to bottom) to maximize their flavor. A satisfyingly thin and crispy cracker crust. Nice sauce. It is extremely disappointing and frustrating to have to drive back to the restaurant to address issues that should have been caught before the food was served. The owner appears unwilling to hire an experienced manager to oversee quality control, and the result is a product that is consistently falling short of low expectations. What makes this especially sad is that the previous owner and his wife spent decades building this business by taking pride in the food they served and ensuring customers received a quality product. Today, we accepted his offer to give us a free meal with the hopes that we would have a more positive experience. And I'm very pleased that today's experience was what we had been hoping for. We received two very generous gyro platters, filled with large portions of very tasty gyro meat, rice, yellow pepper, black olives, sliced red onions, 2 containers of tzatziki sauce, and a pita bread. The tzatziki was a little thin, but was good poured over the rice. The container was so generous, that it might have been enough to fill up 2 moderately hungry adults or one very hungry adult. We each finished most of our platters, but did have a little leftover for a later snack. Bottom line: the food was excellent with spices and moist meat and fresh tomatoes, onions, and flavorful olives. The portion was more than generous size and we will definitely return often for a filling meal. Now we are looking forward to trying other menu items like their burgers.
