My favorite Chinese food place in alameda. Food is always consistent and good. & they are always nice and pleasant.

The service was good. I stopped in randomly and ordered the Beef with Oyster Sauce since I happened to be in the area. The dish was just okay. The flavor wasn't bad, but the oyster sauce was surprisingly thin, almost like water. The zucchini and carrots were also undercooked and still very crunchy, to the point where they felt almost raw. I'd give the service another chance, but the food didn't quite live up to my expectations. read more

It's Oct 2025, and Little Joe's Express is still my go-to for Chinese takeout in Alameda when I get home before 9pm. I just call in my order when I cross the Park St Bridge at 830pm, and go pick it up. Prices are a little higher now, but they still serve great food. The place is still takeout only. read more

I thought it was a sit in place when I walked in, but it was too small for that. A little disappointing that it wasn't, but thats ok. It wasn't busy for take out, so we ordered 2 entrees to go. It was fast! Again, I don't think it went that busy at the time, so that's great! I'm happy with the food. My fave is Chow Fun, so it was good. My husband said the Sweet & Sour Chicken was too greasy. I can see why. I guess we are just too used to making it ourselves lol. I would consider coming back! read more

You guys, I used to love this place. We started coming here in 2023. The flavors and portions were amazing. That is no longer the case. Beef broccoli, meat is tough, tastes a little sour. Do not buy. Egg Foo Young, not one bit of egg was used to make this. Egg foo young is a flat egg patty with veggies and meat and a sauce to pour over. I ordered today, there's ZERO egg. I got a greasy rice flour patty w/lots of veggies and a sprinkle of meat. It's inedible. I took a bite and my eyes teared up because I wanted to y@ck. I spent $15 on this shizz?? Do NOT BUY. Chow mien is fine, sweet and sour is fine. No longer the "gourmet" or flavorful food it was 3-years ago. read more

I ordered from here for my small potluck and it was so easy to place an order. I did it online and went to pick it up. It's a very small place and is only takeout. I didn't seen any seats, so I'm assuming it's only takeout. The lady there was really nice. I got fried rice and some soups. Everything tasted good and comforting. I wasn't able to snap photos because people got to the food beforehand, but everything was good. read more

Ive driven by Little Joe's so many times and finally bit the bullet to try them. Ive read reviews before going and overall people loved it. I read this one review from my fellow elite Steve D. and he mentioned that the salt content of the food was on the light-side. After eating there, I know understood what he meant and honestly I was all for it because the food still tasted delicious. The portions are really good and the food was prepared very well. All the ingredients were very fresh and crisp, with a surprisingly abundant amount of onion in everything. You can take that how you like if you like onion or not. Id come here again and maybe even try the meal that Steve D mentioned was a "secret" item on the back of the menu. read more

I haven't been to this place for 10 years & wasn't aware there were newish owners. I remember when there would be a line out the door on the weekends. They were crazy/busy. Food turned over quickly and was delicious. Unfortunately my beef bordered on rare/rawish. The chicken was definitely undercooked. For safety, both were removed from their dishes. Everything including the veggies were absolutely drowning in oil/grease. I hope my experience was a rarity. read more

This is walking distance so it's our regular Chinese takeout spot. I only started coming here post COVID so I can't even picture how it used to be a sit down restaurant. These days, they serve to go orders only and it's quick and convenient. Not to mention tasty. Our go tos include the Peking pork chops, fried tofu and fresh veggies, spicy garlic eggplant and their hot and sour soup. All their veggies are always fresh and cooked perfectly. You can order online or call in your order and it'll be ready in 15 minutes, every time. Prices are reasonable and they also offer lunch specials on weekdays, although it's usually heavy on the rice. All in all, a really solid spot that we hope stays around for a long time. read more

I came here on a Friday night to grab a quick meal to share with my husband as we decided to eat at the park on a hot Friday night. We shared the house fried rice and Mongolian beef. The boxes looked small but the portions are large in the box. We even had left overs. The service was friendly and take out only since the store is super small. My husband and I get take out from Little Joe's almost once a week- it's that good! The portion sizes are so generous and prices are really great considering most places charge at least $15 a dish nowadays. Everything we've had has been really good. We're big fans of the salt and pepper fish and sesame chicken. Wish they were on Doordash, but that could be dangerous for us because we'd probably eat there even more! read more

I order the sesame chicken and it's exactly what I want from a Chinese food takeout spot. Crispy fried chicken pieces, a nice sweet sauce, and big portions. It's a ma and pop shop so def support local. If u order takeout sometimes the food can get mushy from the steam in the box so open up the boxes if u can to let the moisture out. I docked a star because I'll always try to order another dish to try it out but most the time they're not that great so now I know to just stick with the sesame chicken, but you might like something else totally different read more

Update: Wow the food is still excellent after all these years! I love that they are offering online ordering! I ended up ordering 2 nights in a row this week! You still pay in person but it is so convenient to order online. And the staff is always super friendly! They are taking all Covid precautions very seriously and I am truly great full for that! Had the potstickers and hot n sour soup last night. (The soup does have some white meat chicken in it which I loved! Vegetarians be warned....but it's super yummy!). Tonight I had the sweet n sour pork. It was crispy and absolutely delicious. Top sweet n sour pork I have ever had! It was fabulous! Also had fried wontons with steamed rice. The prices are terrific and the portions are generous. This place still stands as my favorite Chinese food in alameda. It is excellent and I appreciate the wonderful service! Ordered house special Hong Kong noodles. I wish they would have let me pour the sauce on at home so the noodles would stay crispy. Alas they didn't. So I had to eat my food in the car. About 60% of the noodles were soggy . The portion size of the noodles was okay. I have had more noodles elsewhere. They excelled in the portion and variety of veggies. Lots of tasty bok Choy. Carrots celery mushrooms water chestnuts and baby corn. 3 nice size shrimp. 2 super good Cha sui., several slices of chicken breast and 2 slices of beef. The sauce was GE slightly sweet. I am a huge "shrimp with lobster sauce" fan and came here specifically to try their dish based on the wonderful reviews and pictures. Service was friendly but a little slow (this was when they had indoor dining). It was just myself and another table in this small little restaurant (definitely hole in the wall vibes). Casual. The waitress took about 15 minutes to place my order as she was mainly in the back/side prepping what looked like to go orders. Also I think I came on an awkward day as the health inspector was there....with the commotion I felt overlooked and it's not appetizing to be at a place hearing negative critiques by the inspector with his clipboard. For example, I heard the gentleman criticizing the waitress for wearing gloves but not changing them after touching one thing to another. Yikes! Thankfully the food did come out quickly once my order was placed so that I could distract myself. Presentation looked amazing, just as I had expected and seen on the pictures. Sad to report though that my shrimp with lobster sauce was tasteless! Bland. No seasoning, salt, or anything. Huge bummer. I ate a little bit and asked for the check. Waitress could tell I didn't like it but I remained polite, paid my tab, and left. Will I be back? Unlikely. But the reason for the 2 stars is that the waitress was very friendly despite being a bit preoccupied (understandably) and they had a great huge menu. Mom and Pop Chinese food, currently operating as a To-go counter only. This little gem is situated in a neighborhood street with less than a handful of other venues (coffee shop, etc), in the middle of Alameda about half a mile equidistant between the two parallel "downtown" streets of Park and Webster. Pretty reasonable prices and worth supporting small businesses like these, as their food is flavorful too. They are courteous and have daily lunch specials under $11 on Monday to Saturday until 3pm. Closed on Sundays. Give it a try! read more

Classic Chinese American food done well. We've had Joes a few times and have always enjoyed it. Their food is consistent and with balanced seasoning. Particularly love the crab meat cheese puffs (aka Crab Rangoon). Not a lot of restaurants serve that out west and Joes version might be better than those on the east coast. I asked if they did delivery because from reading other reviews, it seemed as though delivery isn't always an option. However from my encounter: they're willing to deliver as long as it's within Alameda. They were very nice on the phone! The Pineapple Fried Rice with Shrimp and Chicken - 10/10, had a similar taste to curry which I liked! It comes with the option of rice or noodles. Does it beat Howard's (RIP)? No. Anyone who would make a sacrilegious, blasphemous, egregious statement like that cannot be trusted. That being said, it's still serviceable, with decent sized portions. I have seen a bunch of different entrees pass by me while waiting for my order. All the different dishes look industry standard. Ghetto Chinese is what I'd like to call this local favorite in Alameda. PROS: food comes fast very customized, and the portions are large. Lots of variety on the menu and the taste is pretty authentic of Chinese street food on the go. CONS: They have had some sanitation issues in the past and I did observe one of the cooks reaching in the freezer and taking out something that looked really freezer burned with his bare hands- no gloves no tongs, uuugh! The kitchen lacked sanitation precautions, from what I thought. You also can rack up a nice bill if you're not careful with how much you order. read more
