The place is located off a Main Street on the medical campus. As a result, it's convenient and quiet at the same time. The interior decoration is neat and pretty. The waiting staff are very nice and attentive to our needs. It's overall a good Japanese restaurant with regard to food and service. Two things stood out to me and set this place apart from the pack. One is that they offer free sample dishes which you usually see more in Korean restaurants than Japanese ones. Second is that in their menu they have pictures for each sushi/rolls/sashimi, so you have a better idea of what you are ordering. Normally restaurants just provide a few pictures, if at all. You have to visualize yourself for the most part by reading the descriptions. So I find Little Tokyo's visual presentations of the rolls very considerate. read more

I have loved Little Tokyo for years. These are difficult times and to support local we ordered takeout last night. $40 and all rice. Think a traditional takeout container and the large section was rice. The scallop hibachi literally had 8 pieces of scallops and each of those were 8 pieces were scallops that had been cut in half. The steak hibachi had possibly 2 oz of cook meat that was likely a sirloin grade or lower. So disappointed. The restaurant did leave a nice note thanking the customers for eating out. I think I'll wait till they reopen dining room seating and maybe see if there is an improvement. read more

I have been on the search for a great 'express' Japanese place for several months since moving to the area. The SEARCH IS OVER!!!! Little Tokyo is by far one of the absolute best Japanese places in the Triad! The building is located in a business park type area and has plenty of parking. The inside is so cozy and well decorated to turn a small space into a very nice restaurant! We went for lunch during the week and it was busy but not crowded and we were seated immediately. We ordered the Hibachi Chicken Lunch Entree' and a Hibachi Chicken and Shrimp Entree' and were surprised by all that came with it! For around $6.99 we were served a side salad (Shrimp Sauce/White Sauce is really good on it btw), a small sampling of a corn and crab salad, a small bowl of edamame to share and then a HUGE entree. The Hibachi Chicken came with fried rice and carrots. The best part that put this place OVER THE TOP was that when we were brought our check they had placed home baked oatmeal raisin cookies on top! I was very much in the mood for sushi and wanted to give this place its fair shake. I'm really a fan of how the place is laid out firstly but the atmosphere overall was nice. Our server was very nice. We were her only table so she got a little annoying as she stopped by our table about every 2.5 minutes. Yes, we are still fine and thanks much. There was another server that had a table just beyond us. Every time he walked by he reeked of cigarette smoke. It lingered in the air after every pass and we were all very off put by it. The sushi was average at best. I asked for the two most popular rolls. I don't hold out hope for the rest of the sushi rolls of these were their best. The mini free appetizers were actually really good. We weren't a fan of their dumplings at all. They tasted as if they had been in the freezer too long. I haven't been impressed by anything they cooked and it takes forever to get it. So not a good plan for lunch. But if you stick with sushis, everything should be fine (and tasty). read more

I can't even begin to convey how great this place is. I visit at least 2-3 times a week, sometimes more. I crave it all of the time. They have a wide array of options, sushi being my favorite. Chef Ocean, the head sushi chef, along with the other staff members are wonderful. This restaurant prides itself on serving the freshest menu items available. They never use MSG, Trans Fat, Food Coloring, or any additives in their food. I don't know about the rest of you, but here in America, that is VERY difficult to find. Little Tokyo is a gem!!! Their hibachi is perfect and they are so sweet/accommodating with vegan diets. Instead of a vegetable bento box, you can get a vegetable garden box and they replace the meat/fish products (gyoza, soup, tempura, sushi) with veggie ones. They brought us a complimentary 'macaroni' salad which had macaroni, corn, and imitation crab meat. The sushi is alright - we got the Spider Roll, Pacific Roll, and Campfire Roll. The Spider Roll didn't seem very fresh, as the soft shell crab was a little chewy compared to other places. Campfire roll was drenched in too much sauce for my liking. I think my favorite was the Pacific roll, just because I love raw salmon... but the tuna on there was just about tasteless (and it was mostly tuna). I've also tried the udon, yakisoba, and the bulgogi lunch box on the past - all of them passable but not memorable. I do love that they give the 3-4 free little appetizers of sesame chicken, edamame, fried crackers, and Macaroni salad, and the complementary chocolate bars with the check. The atmosphere seemed a little cheap, but for a casual lunch I wouldn't think too much of it. The restaurant has a bit of an eclectic feel, in the sense that they went to several garage sales and picked out everything Asian they could find for less than $10. The service was fairly good, I ordered within 10 minutes of sitting down and received my food shortly after. It was a little overwhelming because I received all my food at once, despite specifying to my server I wanted my 2 appetizers first. She dropped off my food and checked on me 2 or 3 times more. She was very bright and bubbly, which made the experience better. Honestly, the food wasn't great. It was fairly bad actually. I ordered the vegetable roll and the Glock roll. The vegetable roll was pretty and evenly cut, but it lacked any real flavor. Very bland, I had to douse it in wasabi and soy sauce to get any sort of distinguished flavor. The Glock roll was unevenly cut and very hurried and sloppy. It was practically falling apart as I picked it up. I could overlook that if it tasted good, but it really didn't. The fish didn't taste fresh and it was topped with a sweet white sauce that really doesn't belong on sushi. I will say, when I talked to my server about the problems with the food she was very quick to make things right and even offered to comp my whole meal. My husband ordered a roll that had jalapeño inside of it. When he took a bite, there was a very large chunk of jalapeño inside of it, that hadn't been cleaned of the ribs or seeds. It was like that the whole way through- and honestly just gross. When we mentioned it to our server she argued with us that that's the way it's supposed to be and said most people just order it with no jalapeño! First time trying this place when I was craving sushi and didn't want to drive all the way to Sushi Republic. I'm so glad I took the chance. We ordered three rolls including the Glock and the Sexy. While waiting for our order, the waitress brought us some samples of edamame and tempura chicken which we didn't order. It definitely was a nice gesture and great little apps. The presentation of the rolls was perfect. Glock roll is a little sweeter but so good and the Sexy is amazing and by far my favorite. At the end, the waitress even brought a fresh baked cookie has a small dessert. Food was excellent and I look forward to returning and possibly having a new go to for sushi in the triad. As an end note, I want to add that while the service was great in the beginning, there were only two other tables left when we were finished and it still took nearly 15 mins for our waitress to return with the check. Being this said, they make the rolls quick. And even though they have no draft beer you can't go wrong with a Sapporo. They provide some free snacks (edamame, some kind of small wontons, like a honey ginger chicken and some pasta with sweet corn. )Edamame was cold but it was good as it was free. This is our typical go-to sushi restaurant in the area. The service is always great, and the food is always fresh and tasty, and they have selections you just can't find everywhere. Plus buy 1 get 1 hot sake is a big bonus too! The atmosphere is pretty standard, but with some booths that are separated by curtain-like cloth across them. Very intimate, and our favorite place to sit if we can. There's also a sushi bar with seats, and quite a few other regular tables set around a central divider, again for a nice sense of privacy. We've had a lot of rolls and nigiri here, and it's all been wonderful. There's really something for everyone. I am especially impressed that they serve a mackerel roll with mackerel on top of sushi rice. Very simple, but really great quality mackerel. Most places, even high-end sushi places don't carry mackerel always, and it's one of our favorites. They have the basic rolls that are California rolls with some sort of extra additions, and many other of the basics. The other rolls they have invented, or gotten elsewhere are also well done, we'll presented, and good quality. Also, almost everytime we've gone we've been presented with free sample appetizers. It's always 5 of them. Edamame, corn/crab salad, fried wonton strips with a slightly spicy yet tasty sauce, small pieces of boneless fried chicken with honey sauce, and I think seaweed salad. All of it is good. I'm not saying you get a full order of each, but for a nice, free introduction to your meal is really wonderful. The miso soup is good. I prefer more mushrooms and tofu in mine, but the flavor is rich, and it tastes great anyway. The standard house salad with ginger dressing is one of the best I've had. The dressing is wonderfully done, and I've tried a lot of ginger dressing at sushi places. It isn't the most fancy, high-end sushi place you can visit. But, it's a wonderful neighborhood addition.
