Stopped by Liv's Shack on a Sunday afternoon and while the food was excellent, the portions were little small. You order from a giant menu at the front before grabbing a seat at one of many picnic tables. The atmosphere is casual and a couple of bees made it difficult to eat as they chased me. The chicken tenders were hot and crispy, and the lobster roll was buttery and fresh. The clam chowder was very good. While everything tasted great, I felt the portions were quite small for the price, which left us looking for more food somewhere else.

I saw a clip from Sistersnacking and they claim this was the best lobster roll in CT, and honestly, it was a bad recommendation. I should have went somewhere else because the lobster roll wasn't that great. The Food: 1/4lb Hot Buttered Lobster Roll- Where do I begin, first the lobster itself didn't offer a lot of flavor, second there was this weird artificial butter flavor like how you get butter from the movie theater, it was so strange it almost tasted like a weird cheese sauce which I wasn't a fan of, third I didn't care for the bread. It was toasted but it was toasted with so much butter, I feel if i squeezed the roll, butter would of oozed out like if I squeezed a sponge. The sauce covering the lobster was a thick white sauce, it almost looked like they tossed the lobster meat with the chowder then added to the bun. I was on a lobster roll kick the whole weekend I was in town. Liv's was a recommendation, so we came here for lunch one of the days. It's located in a marina, is a little shack with picnic tables they bring your food out pretty quick and of course everything was great. I had a lobster roll, old bay fries and tried white birch beer for the first time. I'd go here again.

We ate lunch here on a day trip out to the Old Saybrook area. The food was delicious and the outside eating area has games (cards, board games, trivia cards, etc.) available to play at your table. It's so scenic right along the water and is a great spot to visit with friends during the summer!

Great food! Fast, friendly service. We must have gotten there at the perfect time because we easily found a parking spot, turned in our order and got our yummy food all within about 15 minutes! Husband had the lobster roll and I had the grilled cheese/lobster. Both were chock full of sweet lobster! It was a beautiful day and their tables that sit under an awning were perfectly comfortable! On our drive back to New York last weekend, I was trying to find a no frill fresh seafood joint on route. Came across this place on Yelp and seems to be overall favorable. I am glad we stopped by this joint. This place opened at 11am and does have about 7-8 parking spots and overall, the shack is located by a marina. So from a scenery perspective, it is very inviting. Walking up, you get to place an order with a wait staff and after the order, they will give you a buzzer and will bring the food over to your table in their nearby wooden tables and chairs seating area. There are ample seating and very clean with utensils and all. Now onto the food. Everything we'd order were on point. My wife got the fish tacos and because of her allergy, they were able to use corn tortilla. I got a fried shrimp roll sandwich along with an order of grilled shrimp. All the dishes tasted very fresh and vibrant. Nothing was greasy. Additionally, we got a truffle fries which hit the spot and my son got a grilled cheese sandwich accompanied by New England clam chowder. The chowder was amazing and not runny at all. Also, they filled the chowder to the rim of the cup. Just look at the photo. You can BYOB which is always great to see at any place. Highly recommend and price point is definitely reasonable for the fresh seafood. Lastly, the staffs were exceptional.

My wife and I live here in Connecticut and over the last three or four years have tried every place pretty much along the CT coast line that offers lobster rolls and this place by far has the best lobster roll your money can buy. Consistently excellent every time we go there. And it's BYOB. Every time we have friends come in we take them here and never been disappointed. Oh and the service is excellent. After you order, go round back and pick a nice shady spot under a tent on one of the many picnic tables. You'll be given a pager and when your order is ready, it will be brought right to your table. We've never waited more than five or 10 minutes after ordering.

Visited one of Connecticut's bucket list Shacks in Old Saybrook. It didn't disappoint. The Shack attack is amazing. Every bit of Lobster tail meets burger smushed by cheese, I agree 100% a must try. Even to share so you can try other things. We had a delicious lobster roll and the lobster tacos which had a hint of spice. Service was great, girls were friendly. Greeted at the door outside to take order and then they brought out the food. Be ready to share some picnic tables and eat outdoors. A True Shack , but worth it.

This is the best so far where you can indulge the sweetest and succulent lobster roll along the marina of Old Saybrook! It's an outdoor seating under a big marquee. Service was fast and easy. Service personnel come to your table when your order is ready. A definitely place for a great lobster roll!

I had to audible from our original dinner plans, and when an area Yelp search proposed Liv's, I remembered that Instagram's @connecticut_bucketlist was a fan of Liv's. I can see why. Liv's is a seafood, burger, etc. shack near the nice boat docks in Old Saybrook. They offer takeout and have an outside picnic table area as well. I tried a hot buttered lobster roll, fried cheese curds, fries and clam chowder. I liked everything. The roll was well grilled. The lobster was plentiful and perfectly cooked. It was dressed with a lemon butter sauce. I prefer a straight up hot butter for lobster rolls, but I respect that they went for something a little different. The fries were thicker than a lot of my fav CT fries, but they were good crispy and I was a fan. The cheese curds had good texture and were tasty as well. The clam chowder was medium thick and really flavorful as well. One of the better chowders I've had in CT. Loved this trip to Liv's. Five Stars

I wished I had a good experience but I didn't unfortunately. I've been trying to get here for a while and last night we finally stopped for dinner around 7. We stopped after a walk and we were very thirsty. I didn't like the ordering process . Get in line, order your food and they will bring everything but why can't we have our drinks right away? Like I said, after our walk we wished we had the chance to have our lemonades right away. And the fact that we are asked to tip before we had our meal is a concept that I don't understand. We were generous anyway. I didn't like the ambience. Too noisy for me, barely found a table. I understand it's a shack however for the price they are charging, some updates are needed. Maybe a fresh coat of paint for those tables or maybe no crumbs or cups left behind. We both ordered the fish tacos. 2 tacos per portion, well seasoned fish with a very generous amount of coleslaw and pico de gallo. Too spicy for my taste but just right for my husband. I don't think I want to return.

Excellence. A nice shack tucked by some fancy boats and homes- this is a good place to go and worth the money. We had a surf n' turf burger (who would have thought lobster and hamburger would be delicious!) also known as their Shack Attack and their tacos. The surf n' turf burger was a little heavy for me but that's what makes it darn good right? Imagine a lobster roll meets juicy hamburger. I went home and made mine little lighter but their combo is definitely inspirational. A Swiss cheese binds together land and sea. No need to add seasoning- they did this dish justice! The tacos were also good- a nice spicy kick at the end with a good combo of seafood and some Cole slaw like topping. They had a good clam chowder- typical clam chowder. Nothing out of the ordinary but definitely meets the standard of a New England Clam Chowder within the NE part of the US. The order is outside really casual and you take a beeper thing. Plenty of seating in their back.

Do not eat here if you are interested in a lobster roll. There were perhaps two medium solid pieces and some shredded lobster. The liquid poured on the roll (not sure if it was butter) was so dense that it separated the bottom of the roll from the sides, They are stealing your money here and this is a giant rip off. Quick and easy site but a restaurant embarassment!!!!!! read more

Lobster. Butter. Lightly toasted roll. Perfection. I have to say it's the best lobster roll I've ever eaten. Got the 1/2 pound version. I swear it felt more like a pound. No stringy meat here. Whole claw meat. Perfectly cooked, nice and moist. Also had the truffle fries with parmesan, which were quite good. I highly recommend this restaurant. read more

Lovely lobster rolls and a good change from the hoity toity stuff over at the Saybrook Spa and Inn. We were staying there for a few days and got tired of the same stuff and the difficulty in getting a seat for lunch or dinner at the restaurant below - that being the only place to eat within walking distance. That is until we found this place! Only problem for me is that they aren't open for longer. Would have loved to have dinner here. read more

Stopped by here with my husband. The food is reasonably tasty. Grilled mahi mahi was fresh, though it was a little overstuffed with toppings which made it hard to handle as finger food. The BLT salad was also solid - fresh with tasty and simple ingredients. The view from the outside seating around the shack was nice with a hint of the sound showing beyond the yachts at the adjacent boating club. The food wasn't terribly interesting or unique; the standard overpriced seafood fare for the Connecticut shoreline. The service was fast and polite: I got the sense that they were mostly kids working summer jobs. We didn't order the lobster roll (though they have a board where people write down their claims that it's the best lobster roll they've ever had) simply because we weren't prepared to sell our first child. read more

The food would get 4 stars from me. I had the lobster roll, a side of Old Bay seasoned fries, and a Root Beer. Others in our party had a cup of clam chowder and a burger, with a bottle of soda each. I did enjoy the lobster roll, and the fries were a nice side dish with it. The clam chowder seemed fine and the burger was fine. The value for the money is more like 1-2 stars in my opinion. I doubt they have a lot of overhead, and of course there's nothing fancy about some picnic tables and small wood shack. So with "tip" (which honestly I way over-tipped for a staff member to carry a plastic tray to a picnic table) we ended up dropping over $50 at this place. I think they should offer cups of ice water for free instead of making me buy a bottle of water for whatever price it was. Perhaps they do, and the staff was just unmotivated to tell me otherwise? Speaking of, the staff was also ~2 stars. They're basically just a bunch of teenagers standing around inside chatting. When we walked in, it felt like they just wanted us to go away. Not much in the way of welcoming us, not much in the way of helping us to understand their menu or food. This is not that unusual for the age of the staff, but my hope would be the ownership would try to encourage them a bit more or try to have an adult there that actually cares about the little details. The location is a little bizarre. I'd give the access 1 star as there's no clarity at all about where one should park. There is a gate that gets you into a marina parking lot where the shack is located, but this whole area has posted signs all over warning you that you're under video surveillance and violators will be prosecuted if they wander too far. I get that they probably have tourists that want to walk onto people's boats and all of that, but the whole thing is a bit of a turnoff. I parked in some spaces outside the gate, but I am honestly not sure if that violated a rule either. All in all, I'm settling on a 2-star experience. Maybe I caught them on an off day during the laziness of summer, I don't know. I'm not apologizing for a 2-star review, but I am willing to admit I'm the outlier as other reviews are a lot more positive. read more

We love the shack and the oyster bar- while the lobster roll is always a good choice I actually prefer the shrimp roll! So fresh, and the old bay fries are my favorite. I think this is a quite winner of one of the best lobster rolls around with have the tourists in the summer! read more

Cute location by boat launch and near park. Stand outside to order, sit in the back "picnic area" to eat. Half shade half full sun in case you're coming from a full beach day just FYI. There is a bathroom inside to use if needed. The lobster roll comes 1/2 or 1/4lb. Plenty of lobster in the roll especially with the 1/2lb. It's buttered and hot. I can't say it was super flavorful and we unanimously felt like it was a bit chewy. I can't say that I'll seek this place out for lobster rolls in the future. The other items we ordered were shrimp on lettuce which was very bland, and mahi tacos which were pretty good. The cesar salad with shrimp was ok. The truffle fries were delicious. If I was to rate out of 5, I'd def say 3/5. I wouldn't say def don't go but I also am not sure I'd go again given the price of lobster rolls and the numerous other options by the shore. read more

The absolute best hot lobster roll around, and we have tried many in Ct. and R.I. Fresh,sweet and succulent meat on the perfect roll. Grilled shrimp tacos seasoned perfectly with a little heat. Ordered the 8oz roll today. $34. Bun was nicely buttered and toasted. Lobster meat was good with the exception of over cooked claw meat. As my picture may suggest the restaurant has severe accessibility issues. The 4 closest parking spaces are dedicated to restaurant employees only and you need to walk up several stairs to enter the "shack". read more

Very Disappointed!!!! Fox 61 had foodie fri there so we decided to try it.I p[aced the order and took a seat . well the service was terrible staff is unprofessional the owner was rude and did not go the extra mile to make it right! food was cold and over priced! I also tipped them at the register witch calculates it there ,I don't mind paying as long as I am treated Farley and service ok but don't waste your money and time when you can enjoy lobster elsewhere!!!! read more

Outstanding casual atmosphere. The lobster roll is off the hook! Great location for a casual bite of seafood. Extremely friendly staff. Definitely a favorite place here in old Saybrook. I love Liv's Shack. The food is absolutely delicious, especially the buttered lobster rolls only thing is they have messed up 2 of a couple orders I have made there. I received other people's order and had to go back and make the switch. Other than that (check your bag before you leave) I really enjoy Liv's. read more

The drawback here is the parking lot location, but that's my ONLY beef. Get in line and order up a hot buttered lobster roll, overstuffed with fresh-from-the-shell chunks, on a buttery, toasted bun. Don't pass up the hand-cut truffle fries (I ordered Old Bay, but snuck a few truffley, cheesy bits from my neighbor). If you must, the Caesar salad is fresh and crisp, but why? Just have the roll. That's why you're here, after all. read more

Absolutely incredible grilled fish tacos and a perfect Connecticut style lobster roll (hot butter, not mayo). Parking was a bit confusing--we used the small lot just before the bigger gated one--but otherwise a great place to stop for lunch. Outdoor dining only. read more

What an amazing burger. Meat ground daily. They ground chuck and brisket. Juicy and nice crust. Fries were good too. And on the marina. I love a great burger. My only suggestion is that they should keep their drink cooler...colder. Highly recommended. read more

Best lobster roll ever! And I'm a lobster roll fan! Stopped here to break up a trip on 95. Loved eating the delicious lobster roll while enjoying a beautiful view of water and boats. There was lots of tender lobster, even on my small size roll. It was cooked to perfection and still warm, which gave it the edge over all other lobster rolls!!! read more

I'm probably alone on this review rating based on what other reviewers have provided. My one star review is based on the 1/4 lb lobster roll. There was a healthy amount of meat but it had absolutely no flavor. It was so bland that I didn't even finish the roll. I was very disappointed as I've heard good things about this place. Also, the grilled shrimp we got was just as disappointing. It didn't look like it was grilled at all and the shrimp was limp and not flavorful at all. The management responded to my review saying I ordered the lobster roll with butter and no salt. This isn't true as I only ordered the roll off the menu with no requested adjustments ( and btw, I love salty foods!). Maybe it was an off day so I'll give them another shot and post a follow up review. There are other good places in Old Saybrook that offer the same type of food so we will patronize those places as well as continue to go to Liv's Oyster Bar as it ROCKS!!! read more

Had our first lunch of the summer at the shack and it will be one of many. The food is consistently delicious, with excellent service and a beautiful location. Cheapest lobster roll I've seen on the shoreline this year and the portions are quite generous. Hand cut, Old bay seasoned fries are a must and don't miss out on the fish tacos. Didn't have room for a dessert, but they looked killer. Can't wait to go back. read more

Cute little place right by the docks. Run by young kids which worried me yet the service was spot on and the food was cooked perfect. Was excited to finally try Liv's Lobster Shack. Great little spot on the water for a casual lunch or early dinner. Went with my mom and had fish tacos, an amazing lobster roll, and some yummy truffle fries!!! Definitely will be going again!!! read more

Meet the Business Owner: John B.

John Brescio is owner and Executive Chef of Liv’s Oyster Bar and Liv’s Shack in Old Saybrook, Connecticut. He has more than 30 years of experience in the restaurant industry working his way through the ranks starting at dishwasher to manager to Chef to owner, at renowned New York City restaurants Tavern on the Green and Judson Grill, Aux Delices in Greenwich, the executive dining room at Sony Headquarters and as a private chef in Manhattan. John opened Liv’s in 2006 after moving to Connecticut, receiving an “Excellent” review from the New York Times, and critical acclaim from Connecticut Magazine, among others. Raised in Queens, New York, he is a graduate of the French Culinary Institute in Manhattan.

Within 10 minutes, my order was ready at the pick up counter. I found my way to one of the open and very clean tables inside the restaurant. At first glance, the clam chowder looked way too rich, almost New England style (white and thick) I kind of sighed a little bit and felt a little disappointed. But once I stuck that spoon into the chowder, that thickness seemed not that important. The clams were generously portioned, some small, some large, some nice and chewy, along with a great flavored broth and some small diced white potatoes. This was deliciousness at its best. Simple with that by the sea scent and flavor. This could be one of the best clam chowders I've had yet in Connecticut. The six clam fritters were good, yet a bit greasy. The fritter dough itself was delicious, but I would've liked a little bit more clams in the fritters. I didn't like the tartar sauce on the side, so I went to the counter and got some cocktail sauce. New to town, my neighbor told me I had to go get a burger there. My wife and I went on Saturday. I got the double bacon cheeseburger, probably the best burger I've had in my life. My wife had said her lobster roll was incredible, we shared an order of truffle fries. I have never had truffle fries, and usually don't get fries to go because they just end up soggy, but these fries were crispy and full of flavor. I took my parents here for their senior lobster roll discount day. I never know how trying a new place will go with them, being from Clinton, lobster landing has been their favorite go to. My parents and I all agreed, BEST LOBSTER ROLL!! We were blown away by the quality and size of meat, butter had just the right amount of lemon and our rolls were gorgeously toasted! 1/2 pound lobster roll...perfectly tender and flavorful on a perfectly grilled roll. What made this roll a step above other establishments was the butter. I can't put my finger on it, but it tasted like a lobster compound butter that just brought the roll to the next level.
