A niche ice cream shop in Harvard Square. Located in a relatively quiet alley, it's not crowded, but the ice cream is excellent. Charles River Crunch: Signature flavor. Rich and smooth like peanut butter, with a pure and intense bittersweet flavor from the dark chocolate, and crunchy almond toffee bits. The first few bites were delicious, but it got a bit cloying after a while, and frankly, it did not look very appetizing... Coconut: American coconut ice cream was as satisfying as ever. A light and natural sweetness.

Classic Harvard Sq spot with good flavor options. They offer a five flavor sampler, so you know I had to order that even though it was way more than one human needs, but who said ice cream should be consumed reasonably! Flavors I got: Grapenut: I love all ice cream flavors that involve cereal, grapenut is such a random cereal but it's one I love and this flavor was lovely, plus love the softened crunchy grapenut bits throughout.

Mint Oreo: sharp sugary minty flavor, lots of Oreos, wasn't my fav but the rest of the fan digged it. Peanut Butter Cup: any ice cream with mini peanut butter cups in large quantities will be good, the ice cream itself could have...

been more peanut buttery, but a good option for PB fans. Charles River Crunch: Dark chocolate ice cream with almond toffee nuggets. Not enough toffee, and the chocolate was good but not great, this flavor was underwhelming. Colombian Fudge Avalanche: Coffee ice cream with fudge and walnuts. Same, coffee flavor was ok, definitely not enough fudge and walnuts. Lauren got white pistachio that was quite good and Em got the seasonal flavor, red velvet cake which had lots of cake bits and was very good also! Overall, decent, creamy ice cream, with interesting flavors, out of five cones. Best paired with more crunchy stuff and Red Hot Chili Peppers - Snow (Hey Oh).

found that to be overly rich for my taste buds, but I could understand the appeal. The space is super small so there's no space to sit down, but there was a table outside we were lucky enough to snag. The person working was super patient with giving us as many samples as we liked and we were super grateful. Overall, the price was decent and the taste they had in their flavors was pretty delicious - I wouldn't mind coming back in the future if I'm in the area, albeit I do wish they had more seating space.

Truly the sweetest two employees ever! They helped us picked a flavor and showcased their new flavors and the tried and true ones. I love that they have little 2oz cups so you're not stuck eating a whole lot of something you don't really like AND it's good if you wanna try a whole bunch of flavors. That being said, they need some WOW flavors like ube or fig. That being said, I liked that they had white pistachio and ginger. We ended up getting strawberry cheesecake. It was yummy and had big chunks of cheesecake so yay! They have one cafe table outside and the shop is crazy tiny but I'm still impressed with the two employees! Give em a raise!

I love ice cream, and I would say Lizzy's is easily the best I've tried in the Boston area so far. It has a wide variety flavors, is super colorful inside, and gets to you quick. The consistency was fantastic - super creamy and smooth! I opted for the pumpkin pie while my girlfriend tried black raspberry, and we were both so impressed with both flavors! The pumpkin pie even had pieces of pie crust and pie filling swirled throughout which was a fantastic touch. Super great prices for the area too! While I wish there was a bit more seating around the area, my girlfriend and I enjoyed walking around with our ice cream. You will NOT be disappointed and this is absolutely a must-try!

A very tiny ice cream shop located in Harvard Square but packed on the weekends with the line being out the door. They serve ice cream in cup or cone or by pint if you choose to buy it whole. We had the almond praline flavor ice cream and boy do they lacked that flavor with so many almonds, it was amazing!

We stopped for ice cream after Harvard museuming. There was a line out the door because inside is super tiny. I felt bad for one guy working. But he was fast. It's just the patrons that were slow! I did not appreciate the flavor menu sign in white letters on pink. So hard to read. We could have been ready sooner if it was easy to read. I got banana and he got black cherry. They were good but not magical.

They have super tiny cup sizes so that if you're only craving a spoonful of ice cream, you could actually get just a spoonful of ice cream. If you get the black raspberry flavor you might wish you ordered a larger scoop! I almost walked past this place because the shop itself is so tiny that it's easy to miss. It looks like a lot of their signature/popular flavors are chocolate-based. I was in the mood for something more fruity so I went for the black raspberry, and it did not disappoint at all! I loved how the ice cream captured the tartness of raspberries while still being super creamy. The ice cream had a nice balance between sweet and tart. I did not feel like I was being overwhelmed with sugar. I'd definitely come back to get it again. There are a bunch of flavors to choose from, and they also have a small selection of dairy-free/frozen yogurt/sugar free options. I love that they have packs of disposable wet towelettes next to their napkins and spoons-- we all know that a napkin is sometimes not enough to clean up a sticky melted ice cream mess.

Amazing ice cream but served with a spoon that couldn't handle it. I had to go in with my teeth really. It would get on the spoon and i was afraid the spoon would break. Get better spoons please!!!! Also get a fan or open the door or do something about the lack of a/c in here. I walked in and immediately had to walk back out because it was stifling in there!

Came here for an after-brunch dessert and loved their ice cream! Got the Charles River Crunch and chocolate cookie dough. It's a small store, with very little (if any) seating, but their ice cream was very yummy. Satisfying to enjoy while walking around Harvard Square on a summer's day.

Delicious, creamy goodness! I got a sugar cone of the ginger ice cream because what an exciting and uncommon flavor. I loved the taste of the ginger, there were tiny pieces of ginger throughout. Beware: the ice cream is insanely soft, bordering soft serve despite it being scooped from the tub. If you're not prepared to down the entire cone immediately, go for the cup. My brother had the Oreo ice cream and loved it! I have never seen so many Oreos mixed into ice cream. He recommended! Definitely worth popping in for a frozen treat.

What does it say about a place when you go two days in a row, blur your eyes at the list of 100 flavors, and get the same raspberry chocolate chip frozen yogurt in a chocolate dipped waffle cone, both times? Why are you reading this review and trying to figure out if Lizzy's is better than JP Licks? Are you seriously that patient? Do you like missing out on good things and weighing pros and cons until you decide to skip the whole thing and do a juice cleanse instead? Don't hesitate. Ehhhh it's okay. I really like supporting small local businesses, but this place just didn't quite cut it for me. I tried a small Salted Caramel pretzel and peppermint crunch in a sugar cone. The flavor of the ice cream itself wasn't bad (maybe a little sweet?) It was the texture I had a problem with. My scoops had to be put in a cup, because the ice cream was...too soft said the worker?? Aka, not cold enough? The ice cream completely melted in within 5 minutes, and it wasn't a hot day. :// The pretzels in the salted caramel ice cream were also extremely soft/soggy and didn't add anything texture wise. Food: 4/5 I love Lizzy's Ice Cream. It's by far the best ice cream in the Square. People love JP Lick's, but I always feel their ice cream is sticky and pulls as opposed to being more solid and hard. Everything is store-made and you can really taste the difference. I took one star off because sometimes the flavors are hit-or-miss, but generally they're delightful. My favorite is black raspberry. I worked in an office area close by to Lizzie's while I was at school, and I'd always stock a pint/quart in the freezer for those long days :) Service: 4/5 As with the flavors, the service can be a bit hit or miss, but generally everyone is super pleasant and super wonderful. The shop is small, so I don't like to keep people waiting, but when it's not so busy, everyone is very willing to answer questions and give advice. Also you can sample whatever you want! It may not have the razzle dazzle of a place like Toscanini's, but Lizzie's is like home. :) Atmosphere: 4/5 Like I said, it's small, but one wall is taken up by a huge community board that people can post on, and I think that says a lot about the place! Only very spare seating, but the square is a great place to stroll around anyway. read more

Stopped by after touring Harvard looking for a yummy treat and my expectations weren't met. Looking at their flavor list, I was excited to try the raspberry chocolate chip frozen yogurt and a coffee avalanche ice cream. But the fro yo's consistency and flavor was inferior to most frozen yogurt I've had and the coffee ice cream was too sweet and lacking unique flavor. Overall, the ice cream and frozen yogurt wasn't bad, but there were other ice cream places in the area that I wish we would've tried instead. read more

Lizzy's is somewhat of a hidden ice cream gem in Harvard Square. You might run into JP Licks first bc of it's location closer to the T, and although I love JP Licks too, I think Lizzy's is great too! I think I recommend JP Licks if you're getting a small amount of ice cream because they have fun rotating flavors. However, I would strongly recommend Lizzy's as your first choice if you wanted to buy a hand packed pint for a wild weekend or a showstopper at a dinner party. What I love about Lizzy's hand packed pints is that you can get 3 flavors that are packed pretty vertically so all flavors are always accessible! AMAZING!!! I also think you can get 4 flavors if you can convince whoever is working... For chocolate lovers, you must get their dark chocolate with choc chips/other chunky goodies. I was in the Harvard area so decided to try this ice cream shop out. I tried the Colombian fudge avalanche which has chocolate, nuts, and fudge. I chose to have it in a waffle cone and it was delicious! The ice cream did melt pretty fast which I feel is a good thing because it is probably made of the best quality milk. Despite the cold weather there was a line outside the door. It is a small ice cream shop that does not have very much seating at all, so if you're looking for a place to sit down this may not be good for you. I visited on a Saturday afternoon and there was only one employee which I thought was inefficient. She did an exceptional job at getting customers out but I could tell she needed help! I came here impulsively after going to the Harvard Natural History museum. It was so crowded, I just had to try their ice cream. I tried the black raspberry and the flavor wasn't there. I decided to go with chocolate and birthday cake. While eating my ice cream I realized that the ice cream was a bit too sweet for my taste. Another person in my group got the malt and they enjoyed it. So I think it's more of a ice cream preference. read more

Lizzy's has really solid ice cream for sure! The store is tiny and can get really crowded easily and a little overwhelming. The Chocolate Orgy flavor is decadent, banana flavor is super good and their seasonal Red Velvet Cake flavor is pretty tasty. Service was kind and timely and portions were generous. Overall I would definitely recommend going to Lizzy's instead of JP Licks if you're in Harvard Square. If you're in Cambridge in general, Christina's Ice Cream in Inman Sq is my favorite but Lizzy's is a good runner up! read more

The vegan chocolate ice cream (tofutti) was horrible. Tasted so weird. Hard to describe what it tasted like. Also, the bowl they gave it to me in was weird. Would not recommend for vegans. Friend said her dairy ice cream (cookie dough flavor) was fine. Nothing special but definitely edible. Pro- they did give LOTS of toppings on the ice cream. I got my vegan chocolate with oreo pieces and there were at least 3 full crushed oreos on it. read more

I was expecting to pay a lot for ice cream given the area that we were in and was pleasantly surprised to find out HOW cheap it was! Love how they have so many diff choices- icecream, soft serve, cake/sugar/waffle cones, etc. Guy serving was super chill and let me sample a bunch too. I got the butter crunch and the chocolate pretzel one which were pretty good (i asked for two mini sizes and after i got it was like daaang ok ok)!! Mom got the pistachio one and said there were hella nuts so if ur into that then I think you'll luv it I would rate icecream a 3.5 but because of the amazing price, ill definitely bump it up to a 4; DEFINITELY superior 2 thriftys or baskin robbins. Honestly this place just gets better. We LOVE it here! It's right on Church Street in Harvard Square, and we discovered it via Off The Beaten Path Food Tour's Harvard Square Chocolate Tour. They have a lot of chocolate flavors, and they have really unique flavors too like Charles River Crunch or Chocolate Orgy. They have creamy ice cream that's premium and delicious. I think the staff is so friendly, too, and if you just want a little snack you can try their mini ice cream cones which are adorable and just the right size. I can't wait to try more flavors. Definitely going back soon! read more

The best ice cream in Harvard area, definitely better than JP Licks. The flavors are quite tasty but the real standout is the texture. extremely creamy and not at all icy. Stopped into this small, unassuming ice cream shop in Harvard Square while visiting a niece in grad school. Very nice guy behind the counter willing to answer so many of my ice cream questions. I settled on white pistachio. Decided to get a mini cup. I really liked the way there were very small sizes available. The white pistachio was very, very good with an unexpected number of actual pistachios mixed in. Honestly, I could have eaten, 4 minis, but did not. There are only two stools for seating at Lizzy's, it appears to be mostly take out. On the other hand, there is a huge wall of public event postings, which is an inviting positive for those new to town looking to see what's going on in the area. read more

Friendly staff and delicious flavors! There's a great variety of flavors that cover your basics but also some local signatures like Charles River Crunch and unconventional but delicious Ginger. I highly recommend the Raspberry Chocolate Chip! One of the best I ever had, already can't wait to go back for it. read more

Been to Boston twice and this is always a place for me to visit. Prices are very reasonable, staff is always great, and of course it's delicious! This past trip, I came during the summer so I decided to get the raspberry sorbet. It was so refreshing and perfect to beat the summer heat. Come down and check out this little shop! read more

I came here with my lao peng you, Evelyn, and her jie jie after dinner for ice cream. We all agreed that the ice cream was significantly too cold. I would even go as far to say that it was unpleasantly so. Also, the almond toppings were below average. I've certainly had better almonds elsewhere. read more

They had a decent variety of ice creams to choose from but nothing out of the ordinary. I tried the Charles River Crunch which ended up being too sweet for me because of the toffee crunch. Surprising that it was chilly that day in March but the ice cream was melting all over the place. Pricewise? It was almost $4 for a kiddie scoop in a cake cone w/out any toppings. Would have rather settled for Baskin Robbins in Chicago - that's not saying much. read more

Solid ice cream. Got the 1 scoop cup with half a scoop of Mint Oreo and the other half of Colombian Fudge Avalanche Fudge. Serving sizes are huge and the scoopers are friendly. However I would personally choose JP Licks over Lizzy's because JP Licks' ice cream is much more rich and creamy. Definitely recommend! read more

Had great ice cream at Lizzy's. I got their vegan chocolate, which was delicious! They had a negative review for it, but they must have changed it since then because mine was wonderful! Obviously not dairy ice cream, but texture/taste-wise was still very enjoyable. My sister got their vegan coffee, which I tasted, and was also really good. My non dairy-free friend got their white pistachio regular ice cream and he couldn't stop raving about it. read more

Soooo yum! Two nights in a row i went for two scoops with hot fudge. The flavors were chocolate chip and black raspberry. So good! I have to say that my companionv had plain vanilla with hot fudge last nudge night and he preferred to my suggestion of getting what I ordered? A purist! Don't understand but to each his own! So the black raspberry was very delicious and a winning combination with hot fudge. The chocolate chip had big, flat chucks of chocolate...another winner! They are not skimpy on the hot fudge or the ice cream. But you do have to pay extra for nuts. It was already about $12 for the 2 sundaes so as good as they were, I only go for a splurge! (Should have been rated with at least 2 dollar signs!) One suggestion for Lizzy...the bowls for the sundaes have vertical ridges in them. The fudge gets stuck in them and you don't want to miss a drop! Oh, second suggestion...put a couple of tables outside so people can sit and enjoy their ice cream. Seating inside is too limited. read more

I really like their mini-cones! For just like $1.50 or something you get a cute little cone with just the right amount of ice cream.. some of the other cones I saw them serve is probably like half a pint, which is really much more ice cream than anyone should be eating.. but I'm sure perfectly delicious. I tried their colombian fudge avalanche (per their description: colombian for coffee, fudge for fudge, avalanche for walnuts), very good and not too sweet! Boyfriend enjoyed the oreo, which is again much milder than the usual oreo (which may be good or not depending on your taste). I think I prefer something sweeter but I do love the mini size (and price) and supporting the mom-and-pop stores! read more

My daughter and I stopped by here as she really wanted some ice cream. I have to say based on reviews I was expecting an average experience but we were delightfully surprised with how yummy the chocolate cookie dough ice cream was. The young lady who was serving us was very nice and let my daughter try several flavors before settling on the one she wanted. She got the chocolate dipped jimmy cone which my daughter loved and made a nice compliment to the ice cream. Overall great quality and experience. read more

History

Established in 1995.

Way back in 1995, Lizzy's was founded by owner Nick Pappas, an eccentric corporate-world type. In a bout of mid-life crisis, Nick cashed in his chips as a Digital Manager and dove headfirst into his dream of making the most delicious ice cream around. Guess what - it worked! The right side of Nick's brain has conjured up some of the most exciting flavors you'll ever taste, and his perfectionist tendencies guarantee that only the finest ingredients are ever used. All of this translates into the best-tasting ice cream sundaes around, with no equal. One note of caution: if you have Lizzy's cater your Sundae Party, be prepared for a very serious lickin'!

Meet the Business Owner: Phil R.

Phil Rizzuto is a fourth-generation resident of Cambridge and a lifelong fan of Harvard Square and its vibrant scene. Phil began working at Lizzy's in March of 2007, right after finishing high school at Cambridge Rindge and Latin, and grew to love the ice cream business for the happiness and good feelings it brought to its customers. Phil worked at Lizzy's for six years as an employee and three more as a store manager, all while completing his undergraduate degree and beginning a career in education. In November of 2015, Nick Pappas, owner and founder of Lizzy's, decided that after 20 years, he was ready for retirement. Pappas originally intended to close down the Harvard Square location permanently, but Phil had other ideas. Leaving his career in teaching, Phil decided to make ice cream his new life's work and purchased the Harvard Square location from Pappas, which will continue to serve the same delicious ice cream with the same familiar cow adorning the outside of the store

The most frustrating part is that my wife specifically wanted Raspberry Chip, which was only available in the $27 quart size. I would never have purchased a quart if that flavor had been available in a pint. To make matters worse, I didn't receive Raspberry Chip at all, making the purchase completely pointless. When I called the store, the young woman I spoke with said it wasn't their fault because they hadn't received the flavors in their shipment. While I understand inventory shortages happen, that is not the customer's responsibility. Good customer service means contacting the customer before substituting items or offering a refund--not sending completely different products without approval. I politely asked to speak with a manager or owner, but was told neither was available. Instead, I was instructed to find an email address on the company's website if I wanted help. That is not an acceptable way to handle a customer complaint. Running out of inventory is understandable. Failing to communicate, making unauthorized substitutions, providing no management support, and leaving the customer to chase down a resolution is not. This experience fell well below what I would expect, and unless the company makes this right, I cannot recommend ordering from this location.

I was very excited to find an artisanal ice cream place as I am a huge fan and supporter of non-chain ice cream shops (or if it's a chain, it better be a good one like my beloved Amorino in NYC). So while we waited for our scoops to be ready, I started reading labels on the prepackaged ice cream containers in the freezer and was surprised to see that one of the ingredients was corn syrup. In this day and age when big corporate brands such as Haagen Dazs make ice cream with 5 natural ingredients only, one would expect a mom and pop shop to be at the forefront of natural ingredients used in their ice cream. I had ice cream here once and it was very good. My dog liked it a lot!...little treat. Didnt give him too much, wouldnt want to have him stolen, held hostage, held for ransom, then put down over a bit of a stomach ache...like at some places. But the ice cream here is really good. good selection and all the flavors are TRUE. With summer coming, be sure to bring the kids! read more

The ice cream was great, but it seems to be staffed by a crew of druggie 14 year olds. There were four girls "working" here. Only one was helping anyone. The other refused to make eye contact with other people in line and kept dashing to the back. There is no way that they weren't doing drugs back there. read more

They have great ice cream. A scoop each of chocolate orgy and vanilla in a cup is delicious and huge. The only reason I'm not giving them 5 stars is I feel like they're tied with JP Licks, just a little less creamy. So it really depends on what texture you're going for. read more

Good ice cream. Its cold. made with milk. goes down smooth. the line at Lizzy's is usually long, but moves fast. Enjoy a cold treat on a warm day! read more
