Located right across the street from Van Cortlandt Park is this little take-out-only bakery that has been around since 1985. They sell a variety of cakes, pies, muffins, and cupcakes, but with a name like Lloyd's Carrot Cake, making a choice was a no-brainer for me. The moment we walked in, the wonderful aroma of baking cake filled the air. There was a short line to order and pay, but once we made our purchases, we couldn't wait to dig in. The carrot cakes were still warm from the oven. Each bite had wonderful flavor from the carrots and spices. The carrot cake itself was moist and not overly sweet, which is how I prefer it. It's topped with a white frosting that was also nice, but too sweet for my taste buds. I think the carrot cake can stand up on its own without the frosting, but I think a majority of people would like the frosting anyway. My sisters mail-ordered me one for my birthday during the pandemic! It was absolutely amazing and brought tears to my eyes. It was an extra large cake and the NY "pause" order made it impossible to share with extended family, friends and even coworkers... so I wrapped half of it and put it in the freezer for another day. Guess who unwrapped it the next day? My 6-year-old. She declared it "the best cake." My deepest condolences to the Adams family on the passing of the owner -- brilliant and beautiful Betty Campbell-Adams several months ago. I've had Lloyd's carrot cakes many times and I knew that, for my birthday, I wanted one of their famous cakes for my birthday BBQ. I called ahead to order my cake and at first the person with whom I was speaking, said they no longer take orders over the phone and that I would have to just pick up my cake on a first come, first serve basis. I thought that had to be a mistake and when I confirmed having a message written in my cake, the guy said that I would have to order it then. I proceeded to order and pay for my cake after I made sure that they had my name spelled correctly. It's a pet peeve of mine when my name is spelled incorrectly so I made sure they had the spelling right. So, it's time to pick up my cake. We were supposed to get it at 11 am on Saturday and we got there a little late, at approximation 11:40 am but for some reason the cake wasn't ready. It seemed as though they had forgotten my order and was scrambling to decorate the cake before we got it. We waited 20 more minutes for the cake to be ready. When they brought it out, my name was spelled incorrectly which is annoying because the receipt had the proper spelling and I went over it with the employee who took the order. They corrected it and we just took the cake and left since my birthday party was happening in less than half an hour. When we finally presented the cake to our guests, the name looked crappy. They basically scraped off the 'ph' from Stephanie and replaced it with an 'f' to make Stefanie but the name looked like o wrote it myself in my kitchen. If that wasn't disappointing itself, when we cut into the cake, it was a carrot cake with no nuts and raisins despite the fact that we wanted the whole shibang. Both cake styles taste good but I wanted the nuts and raisins and that's what I paid for. This Lloyd's location has gotten very busy in the past few years, which is great for them and great for the community because it means longevity, but it also feels that with their success, they've dropped the ball when it comes to basic customer service. I plan on calling to inform them of the screw up and I hope they get it together. read more

I am extremely disappointed. I ordered carrots cake for my co-worker retirement. It say good " Good Luck Phyllis". The writing was so slappy. The cake has no cardboard support at the bottom. It was squashe'd to the side. It was horrific when I open it. To me it was a waste of my time. I don't care how good the cake is, if you are not careful with packaging, it is a waste. Lloyds is terrific...the carrot cake will not disappoint- however I did not give the business 5 stars simply due to the lack of customer service. Apparently It's widely known that if you want to place a special order as is indicated as an option on the website, then you have to pop in to the location which is inconvenient at best- I agree. So while you won't get great customer service here- you also do not get the option to leave a message as the voice mail is always full and finally you cannot send an email- which these days would make life so much easier! All of that aside, you will get a delicious cake!!! Please note this is primarily a review of the Riverdale location- I would like to see some changes made- I bought 2 cakes on Saturday but would have preferred to have one without raisins and nuts- but alas I could not l Make happen - no one answered the phone for 5 days. Very disappointed with the customer service. On Friday April 19, 2019 I went to Lloyd's to pick up two cakes & a slice. As someone with a peanut & tree nut allergy I am always satisfied with Lloyd's cake and their option for Plain cake. We ordered a small nuts & raisins for a birthday for Friday ( & a plain slice for myself) we ordered another small plain for Easter Sunday April 21. The young man who rang us up & boxed the cake clarified multiple times with the woman who was bringing the cakes. She said one plain, one nuts & raisins and one slice. The cake appeared to be plain because there was no raisins or nuts on top which usually helps differentiate between the two. The box said plain & the cake appeared plain. Sunday when I cut the cake thankfully I noticed the raisins & nuts on the inside before I ate it. I took pictures for proof but I did not want to write a review because I love Lloyd's & the Carrot cake. I went in on Monday afternoon to speak to the manager. The lady claimed she was standing in for the manager. I asked for another Plain Cake but she did not have any available. She told me I would have to come back in an hour and a half to get another cake. She offered me a plain cake with no frosting because the cake had to cool. When I asked for the frosting on the side, there was no frosting. Very disappointed I asked for a refund. The " stand in manager" said I would have to return the cake. Why would I have to return the cake! You can't resell it. She said it was part of the policy. I asked to see the policy & she pointed to nothing. When questioned again she said she would have to show the cake to the professional. I apologize for the long rant but I am just very disappointed in the customer service. I hate to even write this review because I absolutely love Llyod's baked goods, however I am utterly disappointed in them at the moment. I was looking forward to my birthday cake coming from here, it was literally one of the highlights of my birthday for me having an excuse to have a whole cake from them. I placed the order a week before it was to be picked up and paid for it in full in advance. I specified both when I placed the order over the phone and when I went in person to pay for the order that I would be there by 2 PM Saturday for pick up. I arrived at 1:30pm for pickup and morning from my order was ready. I also ordered a dozen Carrot cake cupcakes. When the cupcakes came out they barely looked frosted like they just dropped the frosting on and kept it moving. Than the first cake they brought out to me was completely lopsided and they asked me to refrigerate it right away. I refused to take that cake and they asked me to wait 10 minutes more and then A 2nd cake came out in better condition than the first one. I live about 10 minutes away and refrigerated the cake immediately once I got home, however you can see from the photos below that clearly this cake had not been cooled and was frosted while hot as it had fell apart before even arriving home. Again it was such a let down for me, I didn't get a photo of the other side of the cake which was also damaged from melting to the point one of the decorative flowers had also fallen off. I don't think I will ever order full-size cakes from them again maybe just stick to slices this really just left a bad taste in my mouth as it was my birthday. Bought my dads birthday cake from here a couple of weeks ago. The cake was delicious, affordable and everyone seemed to love it, but the customer service definitely needs some work. I came into the store at 6:40pm when the store closes at 7:00pm but was given attitude because the older lady in the front said they were about to leave. If your closing time is 6:40pm instead of 7:00pm then make that clear on all platforms. The cakes are already pre-made too so I don't understand what the point was of the rude behavior. She even refused to put happy birthday on the cake, as I am lucky to have even received a cake. Lol the experience was laughable but if you're going to purchase a cake from here, try to come a bit earlier I guess. Other than that, I'd recommend this bakery. The carrot cake is really moist and not too sweet. The frosting is VERY sweet though but I think it balances well with the actual cake part. I went here on a Thursday around 12:00pm and the selection was very sparse. Carrot, German chocolate and Chocolate frosted cakes were all in abundance. But they were out of red velvet, had 1 slice of strawberry filled and 2 slices of pineapple filled. The carrot cake was just okay, very run of the mill. The cake to frosting ratio is very off with all the slices but it's the most apparent with the carrot cake because it's a single layer. The best part of the cake was the frosting, it's on the sweeter side but still good. The sliced carrot cakes are in a separate casing then the other slices. I can't remember if the case the carrot cake is in was refrigerated or not but the whole cakes that were being served, they were pre boxed and unrefrigerated, which is dangerous for a cream cheese based frosting to be at room temp especially in the summer. The fruit filled slices are all small with very thin layers of fruit filling. You can hardly taste the filling, you taste just a hint or essence of filling along with the cake when taking a bite. The actual cake is dense and has a very overwhelming floury taste. The frosting is again the best part, although they could put more of it on. read more

Delicious and super affordable carrot cake by Van Cortlandt Park. It doesn't look like much upon entrance but they do a lot of business. The slices are extremely affordable - only 2.75 for a slice of the famous carrot cake! And $11 for the smallest cake. They also do cupcakes but I think they have to be ordered in advance. The famous carrot cake is packed with carrots, moist and not too sweet. Usually I find cakes too sweet but the one here is just right. It's not perhaps the most appealing looking cake but it tastes good. I prefer the carrot cake plain over the one with nuts (probably just a personal preference), and the cakes are also better than the carrot muffins (which are denser and less fluffy). I got a chocolate cake slice once and it wasn't anything special, kind of bland and standard tasting. Stick to the namesake items! read more

I dropped by on a Sunday afternoon, struggled to find a parking spot and ultimately ended up double parking and running inside. They normally sell by the slice but they ran out. Dilemma! I ended up buying one of their medium cakes for 15.25 and bought it home. I had a huge slice of it as soon as I got home and it was so much better than I thought t would be. The first bite bought back childhood memories of one of my neighbors who would bake these cakes for us every so often. These cakes are very heavy, moist and rich. I cut myself another slice and that is when I started feeling guilty. I would highly recommend this place to anyone.
