My parents used to bring me to Loard's Ice Cream since I was a little kid. The store looks just as I remember from years ago. I don't think anything inside has changed at all. This location is truly amazing. The owner Tom knows how to take care of his customers. On a Sunday late evening (today!), we went to several places in Alameda hoping to score vegan option ice creams but were unlucky. There were sherbet options but we wanted an ice-cream. We reached Loard's in South Shore shopping center little after 9pm. Tom was putting chairs away and ready to close the shop. When I inquired if there were any vegan options and that we had been to a few places without luck. He immediately said "Come on in, we have plenty of Mr. Dewie's cashew based non-dairy ice-creams"! We were all partial to the bubblegum flavored ice cream with gumdrops. This place actually used to be where Applebees is now located (facing the parking lot) but now it's behind Applebees facing the where JC Penney's used to be. I really wanted ice cream (especially while it's raining) but didn't want to wait for my favorite ice cream place to open. So I looked at Loard's flavors online to see if there was anything I wanted. The flavors looked pretty normal with surprise of green tea and Ube macapuno (taro and coconut). I was excited to try those flavors so we headed over there. The green tea wasn't as "green tea" as I wanted, I mean, it wasn't bad... but it wasn't great. There wasn't an ube macapuno, but just ube. I tried that but it didn't taste very authentic. Nothing really stood out, we just got birthday cake ice cream on a cone for my sister and called it a day. If you like normal flavored ice cream (chocolate, vanilla, coffee) then come on in. Ice cream was soft with no ice crystals. Stored in old fashioned freezer chests with lids. Disappointed that you can't see in to view the ice cream. Customers must make do with the names listed on the wall and labels posted onto the glass with colored pictures. These generic pictures were of the same ice cream on a cone. The only thing to differentiate one from the other was that each was colored differently. Unfortunately, the champagne sorbet wasn't as good as I remembered from childhood. Me and my family came here on the 4th of July. When I came though the doors it smelled of a sweet aroma of sugar that was a little over powering but non the less we decided to stay and try some of the flavors Let me to you! The Ube, which is a bright purple was so good! And the Lychee was pretty good too (which is the combo my sister got on a waffle cone). Have been to Loards Ice Cream in San Leandro and had a wonderful experience. Large scoops of ice cream that was actually delicious. So why not try some of the other locations. My wife and I shop in Alameda and thought why not try Loards' Alameda location. BIG MISTAKE. The very first thing I noticed is that the floor was absolutely filthy. When I say it was dirty, I don't mean from today's activity but weeks of not being swept or mopped. I have not seen such filth in an eating establishment in quite some time While the ice cream was just OK and not nearly as good as that in San Leandro, the real issue was the lack of cleanliness!!! Actual trash, spots and utter filth were on the floors throughout the shop and under the booth tables. How disgusting, I will certainly never return. If the floors are that filthy, I can only imagine what the rest of the facility is like. read more

I've been going here since I was a 5! Now that I am 23, nothing has changed. Same layout, same decorations. Very classy in a "dive-y" kind of way. I love the retro-ness vibe. I came here tonight and my favorite flavor was unfortunately not there. My favorite is banana nut on a waffle cone. I was able to try other flavors, but it wasn't as great so I settled with Cherry Vanilla. I know that its pre-pacakge ice-cream but I wish they used real cherries instead of the maraschino cherry. The tartness from the cherry and vanilla did not go well together. The service was kinda off too. The lady that was working was sitting in the booths chatting when she clearly saw me standing there. Customer service wasn't so great. Since it is such a family friendly ice cream place (where families would bring their little ones out for a sweet treat) it is obligatory for her to ask me if I needed help rather than have me wait there for over 5 minutes and make a obvious gesture by looking for an employee for assistance. On the other hand, 4 buckaroos for a 1scoop in a waffle cone is a great deal. Hopefully this time, they'll have banana nut! (and better assistance!) P.S. Loard's Ice Cream has been around for a long time. I hadn't been here in few years, but as soon as I walked in, I remembered what my favorite was -- lemon chiffon. The wait today was long, with a couple of what seemed to be a high school students working behind the counter not too efficiently, and many people inside the store. Nevertheless, when it was my time, service was pleasant and I got my lemon chiffon cone. I had not realized how yellow this ice cream is... a bit too much food coloring for this decade where people are more conscious about food additives. Loard's is located in the S Shore Shopping Ctr, hidden in all the construction. The place is neat, reminds me of little ice cream places at home. They have a huge variety of flavors. I tried a bunch of flavors and picked the double dutch on a waffle cone. It was a lot of chocolate, paid about $4. Comparably priced. The ice cream was good. However, it does not compete with Tucker's Chocolate Fantasy. The portions here are about the same size as Tucker's, but Tucker's just seemed better. The atmosphere here is nicer and parking is free, but it just seemed one slight notch below Tucker's. Number 3 on my ice cream list after Tucker's, and Fudgelato, both off of Park St. Would drop by here if I just happened to be at the shopping center, but would not go out of my way. read more

Walking through this shopping center and we spotted this Loard's Ice Cream. It's kind of hard to spot because there's no huge Loard's sign, but it is (if I recall correctly) a baby blue building which gives you the feel of an ice cream shop. Walked in, and there was one lady ahead of us who was insistent about test trying out a number of flavors. When she decided on what she wanted, the girl started ringing her up. Granted I noticed the girl was working alone, but that's a poor excuse for blatantly passing us up. As I was standing behind that chick for a number of minutes, another couple walked in and stood right next to me, or rather, inched there way in front of me a little. No worries, I've been standing there for a while and I KNOW the girl saw me right? Eh, wrong. I did a slight nod to her with the small pint of ice cream I had in my hand to signal I was next and ready, and what did she do? Look away at the other couple and asked them if THEY needed help. Seriously, I just stood in line FOREVER waiting for this chick to stop testing ice creams, and just wanted to pay and get out, and she passes me up for another couple who walks in and tries to cut me? I was so peeved with this obvious lack of customer service that my fiance re-opened the ice cream freezer against the wall, and I threw the half pint of ice cream back in the freezer and walked out. Considering the ice cream was ROCK HARD, it did make a loud thud as I threw it lightly and walked out. First I find an eyelash in my ice cream, and now this? There was a good mix of the classics, the unusual, and philippino flavours. The Ube was awesome.
