"Linda Bean's Perfect Maine Lobster Roll" is not a restaurant nor a lobster pound/shack. It is basically a little sandwich stand that is situated next to the LL Bean Bike, Boat, & Ski Store (the Freeport location, there are multiple Linda Beans throughout Maine, we saw one in Rockport as well). It was actually a tad difficult to find as it is not right out in the open. We had to ask numerous people before we actually found this place (oh, don't trust the LL Bean Freeport maps, the location is not accurate at all at least this was the case back in October 2009). Onto the food. As you can see in the picture of the lobster roll, it comes with a side of chips (only choice is the salt-vinegar chips). The buns are lightly buttered and toasted and the roll has "a quarter pounder" of lobster meat (or so they claimed). Looks good? Yeah, but it wasn't up to par. Unfortunately, this was not our favorite lobster roll of the trip. Linda Bean has taken the liberty of adulterating the lobster meat with various herbs and spices that worked to almost masked the savoriness of the lobster meat. Tasted tangy. Before handing the lobster roll over to my grubby hungry hands, a weird concoction of spiced melted butter is also drizzled onto of the roll. All this is clearly visible in the picture of the roll. The end product is edible and not entirely bad, but for $16 per roll, I would pass next time around. They only make them one way and one way only, so if you like your lobster roll traditional and naked, this is not the place for you at all. Move along. . . read more

The most disappointing lobster roll and clam chowder I've ever had. My entire meal was so underwhelming, and I wish I read all the reviews for this place before I went! Lobster roll was a decent size, but didn't have much taste to it. It was such a waste of money. The chowder had a watery and gritty look to it, and didn't look the least bit appetizing at all. It actually tasted like water. I love creamy and flavorful clam chowder, but this was anything but that. I'll give this place one star for their chips because they probably get them packaged already, so it would be a shame if they messed those up somehow. read more

If I could give this negative stars I would... Where to begin? We went here after an afternoon of shopping expecting a good lobster roll... Who knew that we could've saved $15 and got a better lobster roll at McDonalds (do they even still have them there?) First off, be aware that the lobster roll is made with Miracle Whip (luckily we asked in advance and requested it without this "miracle" ingredient). Despite our very difficult to fulfill request the waitress "picked up the wrong order" and we ended up with lobster covered in fake mayo. Secondly, was it even Maine lobster? Our guess is that it was langoustine... For $23, we were definitely expecting better. We also ordered a wild shrimp roll... Not sure why they call it a wild shrimp roll... It was shrimp but the only thing wild about it was how they could charge $13 for mini shrimp that were probably caught months ago off another continent! Now we didn't get desert but be aware, the waitress informed us that the whip cream on the pies is only fresh when the owner is there to make it... Otherwise it's coming from a can! Call me crazy, but fresh whip cream does not take a degree from the French Culinary Institute to make. The worst part of our whole experience was what we witnessed as we were ready to pay our bill. We were sitting near the bar and saw a waitress heat up a customer's soup in the microwave and proceed to dip her finger in it to see if it was hot before serving it. I'm no health inspector but I think that would definitely qualify as a violation. Linda really needs to rethink this whole restaurant. If you are going to charge premium prices, use premium ingredients. Too bad this part of the LL Bean empire doesn't come with a money back guarantee! read more

You will spend whatever you didn't being thrifty in the store after a long line at this shack. The wait is NO BUENO and even then--not your traditional lobster roll. Wish I could give this place zero stars as they don't even deserve one! My son and I tried to eat here yesterday but ended up leaving before our food even arrived. We waited 30+ minutes for a table (it was a rainy, crowded day in Freeport) and finally got seated upstairs in a dingy corner. The floor was filthy under our table (kids had definitely been there before us and no one thought to sweep before seating us). We waited another 15+ minutes just to order. I ordered a salad with steak tips and my son ordered pasta with butter. We were seated next to a large table with many kids and could tell that they weren't happy with the food. That should have been our first clue. After watching this large table get their appetizers, their entrees, and then watch a table, who was seated after we ordered, get their appetizers, I finally complained and asked for the manager. She promptly came over and started to explain that there were different stations for appetizers and entrees, thus the reason they got their food before us. She also kept putting her hands on my shoulders and back, trying to calm me down. Never did I hear, "I'm sorry for the wait". So, my son and I picked ourselves up and walked out. Of course our food was being delivered just as we were leaving. Should have read these reviews before trying to eat there. But NEVER AGAIN will we be back to Linda Bean's. read more

In the land of LL Bean I found it fitting to eat at the little cafe that could, Linda Bean. I am unsure what people are talking about with a hostess, wrong link, but this place is a tiny little shack on the side of yet another LL Bean building, looking on to another LL Bean building and surrounded by yet more LL Bean buildings. It's called a campus and the place is exhaustingly LARGE! I wasn't wearing earth tones so I stood out but anyway, now, on to the main event. The lobster roll is over priced for the size of the roll but when you taste it, you'd pay double just for another bite. The over sized lobster claw meat was seasoned perfectly and so cold and crisp you could tell it was fresh. The little basket came with salt and vinegar chips and butter pickle pieces. I'd close my eyes with each bite, only to open them again making sure no one was looking. I spent my afternoon in Freeport and found excuses to get another one. "Oh, I just saved 10% on my auto insurance, I need a reward-Linda Beans it is!" Within 2 hours we managed to get 2 and a half sandwiches down each and even were tempted to get another for the road. I don't care what anyone says, sweet lady. Linda, we are lobster soul mates. My stomach and taste buds have tasted your sweet nectar and I will never be the same. Ignore these hateful posts, they're jealous and besides, they're not even talking about your tasty little shack. After eating nothing but lobster for a week, we were looking for a place that would sell soup or something light to go. We hit the little counter on the side of the LL Bean bike store, and were very satisfied (though it was not light or lobster free by any means). We got clam chowder and lobster bisque. They were both juuuust right, and paired really nicely with some Pigs bread. Buttery and thick, normally I don't love clam chowder, but this was great. They don't sell in bulk-so we got little cups of soup with lids (6 cups was great for 6 people with salad we made at home). This place was great. Took my kids because they wanted to 'picnic' in the grass and take a break from shopping. We all got a grilled cheese and I ordered a cup of chowder for the heck of it. The grilled cheese came with chips, coleslaw, and some delicious sweet pickles--very well-priced and a great deal at $5. This is the best place in the state of Maine to have a lobster roll. It is so delicious and the cole slaw is out of this world. Everybody here is very friendly and they are pretty quick at getting your food to you after you order. I go out of my way at least once or twice a week just to come here and have a lobster roll. All seafood should be as fresh as possible, not stored for a day or so and then served so you don't lose money... The experience was absolutely horrible... When he walked away, seemingly could care less, I told the server, who offered to take it off my bill, which of course I accepted... But when the bill came, they did some weird switcheroo to "mask" it.. They double charged me for this, added a lobster, then "comp'ed" me x $ to make the final price be as if they had removed it, but did it in such a way that their manager, or whomever wouldn't see that the food was rejected... The way the whole experience went down just absolutely sucked... After a long hard day of work, all a guy wanted was a good meal, but instead I get served spoiled food that's sold to me as "fresh Maine lobster", only to throw up and have them doctor the bill to hide it from the their boss... I have been at the docks when the lobsters come in at Port Clyde, and can verify the freshness and quality of the lobster. The coast is a little rockier downeast, apparently making for thicker shells and sweeter lobster. We had 9 attend dinner tonight, and Linda Beans is just ok. Kids meals of spaghetti were actually egg noodles, and were cold when they arrived. One guest ordered the surf and turf and while the meat was good, the lobster had to be sent back because it was undercooked. Lobster rolls were nothing to write home about, and service was a bit slow as well. We were planning to go down to the brewery down the road, but it was raining and we were in LL Beans - so just ran across the street. Decided to try because it was new- not impressed. $10 cheeseburger with cold-ish fries because they sat in the window too long with a under-ripened tomato. Burger was medium at best but semi- burnt on outside. Fresh chips were OK but lacked flavor aside from salt. Beer good- but Shipyard beer is great anywhere you buy it!! The reviews that mention "going in," or "sitting down," or "upstairs" are NOT talking about this one, which is a small stand attached to the L.L.Bean ski and kayak store. This one has good food (though somewhat overpriced, which is typical for the brand) and a small but friendly staff. Try the lobster stew - it's to die for. Even the hot dogs have a style all their own. I don't like the herbed dressing on the lobster rolls, but just ask for it plain and they will be happy to oblige. LL Bean prides itself on customer service, quality, and affordability. The founder's granddaughter's restaurant provides anything but. Stopping by Freeport en route from points north to points south, we were starving and since everywhere had a wait and because the phones were dead from being in out of service areas (so we had no Yelp to consult), we ended up at Linda Bean's restaurant smack in the heart of Freeport. The location is definitely great with wonderful people-watching. That is where the good review ends. To start with the hostess seemed completely overwhelmed. She didn't know whether to talk to the people who wanted to be added to the wait list or to those whose buzzer had buzzed. We were rushed off with someone to seat us outside who was seemingly running about 10 paces ahead of us. The entry way is a crowded mess with servers running to/from (the doors from the outside only swing out which seems unnecessarily complicated for the servers with trays full of dishes trying to go inside). Our waitress seemed sort of clueless about the menu or making substitutions (when asking if we could replace fries with a side salad she just said 'no' and offered no upgrade alternative; so we just ordered the main and a side salad--would that have been so difficult to suggest?). Unlike many of the other reviewers our food actually came within a relatively normal amount of time. The food was not terrible although certainly nothing to write home about. The mustard dipping sauce for the chix fingers was overwhelmingly mustard-y but my crab roll was actually pretty good. This being said, it was not worth the money. No one came back to refill our waters or drinks or to check in on us but noticing how busy and under-trained the staff seemed to be, it was not surprising. At some point the whole experience just became laughably bad and, after reading some of the other reviews, we were just glad we didn't get food poisoning...except that I did break out in some sort of allergic rash to something I ate there. I've eaten quite a few crab rolls in my life so I don't know what was special about theirs and I certainly don't blame them for my genetic disinclination for whatever I ate, but it was just a befitting end to a quite bad experience. read more

I was drawn to Linda Bean's restaurant by the appealing outdoor seating with chairs around tables that have fireplaces in the middle. That makes a cozy outdoor experience even in cool weather, and the people-watching is good on Freeport's main street. If only the food matched the setting, which it certainly doesn't! I had the most mediocre lobster roll that I can remember with homemade chips that were not exciting. The cole slaw was the only decent thing in my overpriced lunch. Even the fountain soda was bad! My daughter, who is a vegetarian, had a very mediocre pasta dish with vegetables--greasy and unappealing. We live in Maine, so we have constant access to lobster, but there are MANY places with better lobster rolls than Linda Bean's--it almost embarrasses me that people may judge Maine lobster by the food they eat here. read more

I'd give this place 3 1/2 stars only because our waitress wasn't very friendly and it was a little over priced. Also, the clam chowder was pretty gross. However, we had the lobster roll which was pretty good. Plenty of fresh meat, dressed lightly and with just the right amount of seasoning. I had the Sullivan burger which was ok. However, what was awesome was the homemade (I think) potato chips and the sweet potato fries. They were AMAZING!! Best I've ever had. Big, thick, not greasy and perfectly salted. MADE ME SICK!!! My daughter and I had lunch at your Freeport location on Saturday, July 30. We had about a 15 minute wait, for a seat outside, which was fine with us. The staff was very nice and our waiter was exceptionally friendly and helpful. We ordered the following: Combination Plate with Haddock, Clams, and Shrimp, Corn on the Cob, Corn Bread (which they were out of, so opted for the biscuits), and iced tea. We were very disappointed with Combination Plate, as all the "fish" on the plate looked exactly the same. It appeared to be calamari. After tasting, we decided that it was calamari, but the worst calamari we had ever tasted. It was so bad that we left at least half of it on the plate. My daughter had only one piece. I'm not one to complain to the wait staff, as if they take it away, you never know what you are going to get back. After paying nearly $50.00, we left and drove back to our hotel in Portland. After returning to our hotel, I needed to lie down, as I wasn't feeling well. For the rest of that evening up to midnight, I was in the bathroom being extremely sick. It really ruined our weekend trip. I will never eat at this restaurant again and will tell friends, family, and the people I work with about my experience. read more

So I feel that the ambiance is cool, but they seriously need to FIRE all the cooks in the kitchen. They need to take lessons on how to properly clean mussels because the beards were still left on, and no one wants to bite into that just to spit it out. The sauce with the mussels was bland. The quality of the meat in the burger was good, however the tomato slice was soft and mushy. I feel that the restaurant decor looked really amazing, but don't go there for food. Loved the Lobster Roll. It was a good amount and wasn't filled with straight mayo, instead it was lobster salad that has a bit of dill and mayo mixed in which added to the sweet lobster flavor. It was a recommendation from one of the sales associates in the Ralph Lauren store. I had horrible service here with my family. The woman at the counter was extremely rude. When our order came out we were missing a hot dog. She told us that we were wrong and we never ordered that as part of our order. We did order it and and we did pay for it. She was extremely rude about the whole situation and wouldn't even listen to us about it. She said, "it's just a hot dog. Pay for another one." That should not be the response of a cashier at all. She should have pulled up our receipt which clearly showed that we did pay for one. In addition to the service, the food was also not very good. read more
