I decided to switch up my morning coffee and after reading all of the other reviews I really wanted to like this coffee shop. I was warmly welcomed in at first and it took a few minutes for me to decide because I was internally debating if I should try one of the lattes their known for but decided to go with my go-to Vietnamese cold brew. I honestly did not like it. It taste like vanilla was added and I just didn't like the flavor. After I ordered paid and left a tip my drink was made it was left on the bar there was no here's your order or thank you the staff just preceded to talk to each other so I felt dismissed. read more

Local Joe, what a great name! It ain't Average either! When I used to park at the Marin Tower Parking garage and walk out from Smith St, I passed by Local Joe at the corner on Marin St., every day! I could smell the roasted coffee beans and it was intoxicating. But, I never stopped by. I always had breakfast and prepared my coffee at home (and I'm usually speed walking to work), so I didn't need to. I was missing out on some awesome coffee and breakfast! I came on a SATURDAY for the first time lol. They're open! Local Joe is a small little cafe with a few outdoor tables. Only street or private lots for parking, but you can order ahead online and park in front to do a quick pick up. Had the Veggie Burrito with plant based protein, vegan cheese, hummus, babaganoush, tater tots, and spinach. It comes with a Spicy Guacamole Salsa, and this was AMAZING good! It was a mix of everything. A nice spice kick, creamy guacamole, bright and tart salsa that all worked together. The burrito was quite hefty and everything was nice and warm, and tasty and delicious. Very well prepared. For coffee, we went with the Royal Hawaiian Mocha. This was rich and creamy, and not overly sweet. They have those machines where you can scan the QR code and upload any image to be imprinted on top of your coffee drink. We just got Frankenstein. My second visit, I quickly walked over there for lunch (they open till 2PM on weekdays, and 1PM on the weekend). This time I had the other burrito (Turkey Bacon). It came with organic eggs, tater tots, cheddar, feta, Greek yogurt, spinach, and turkey bacon. And of course with the tasty spicy guacamole salsa. Fresh ingredients and well prepared. I just love how everything inside is extra warm. If you need to wake up, get a Black Eye. No, not punching yourself in the eye, but a Black Eye Coffee! It's coffee and doppio espresso. Rich and creamy, and not as bitter. Maybe it makes your pupils enlarge and cause you to run through walls. Overall, Local Joe is beyond an average place for coffee and breakfast and/or lunch. Nice it opens everyday at 630 on the weekdays, and 8 on the weekends. The staff and owner are very friendly and courteous, and probably extra awake with the constant coffee scent. I'll definitely stop by more often! Quick note: Their menu on the counter isn't accurate. It's old prices, so expect to pay more. Also, the drinks have different sizes (small, medium, large), but the menu just shows one price for 12-oz. Check their online menu for more accurate pricing. read more

We were looking for a coffee shop in Chinatown and we always pass by Local Joe and we thought why not try it! So glad we came, the inside of the shop had a little roaster and it was so interesting to see the beans being roasted. ***What I ordered: **Seasonal Latte (10/10): I don't remember what this was called, but it had vanilla, maple, cinnamon, and espresso. It was sweet and creamy at the same time (which I loved about it). It had a hint of espresso, but I wish it was a tad bit stronger. Other than this was a really good latte!! This latte reminds me of fall because of the warm spices (clearly I'm obsessed with fall flavors LOL). Overall, I would definitely come back again. Not sure if I caught them on a bad day, so first I'll say the coffee is good! But be prepared to wait 5x longer than you would anywhere else. I am sympathetic to how much hard work goes into the service industry, but the girls behind the counter genuinely seemed like they didn't want to be there, and that attitude was affecting the entire operation. It took 20 minutes for a black coffee! The staff was not communicating well with one another and I saw several orders announced incorrectly or not at all, adding to confusion. I think if they took order names it would run more smoothly. To have a bad attitude on top of clunky service made me not want to go back there. read more

Have you ever gone out of your way for a cup of coffee because it's just THAT GOOD? Local Joe is that place! It's worth driving to for a cuppa joe. Charles the owner roasts his beans in house and oh the aroma is rich! I have drinking his coffee for years and the consistency of his work and personal pleasantness is worth the visit every single time. My favorite bite to eat is the ABC everything bagel, with avocado, bacon and cream cheese. Local Joe is a place where your senses will come alive! Don't worry about parking either. You can pull up right in front in the loading zone, go get your cup and even stay and sit down, being mindful to share the parking with others. Seating is primarily outside with a view of Aloha Tower. Local Joe is right across the street from Pier 13 on the Smith side street. I'm on the North shore now... Gotta go get a cuppa of coffee! Friend and I got the white chocolate mocha and cold brew Vietnamese coffee (not pictured). The drinks had good flavor but were very sweet (sweeter than Starbucks coffee). Had little coffee flavor (likely because of all the sugar added). If you like sweeter coffee drinks I would recommend this place, but if you want something stronger I would try another drink (with espresso) or go elsewhere. Local Joe is my absolute favorite coffee shop in all of Hawaii! The IVL (iced vanilla latte) hits every time, the baristas are all very nice and inviting, and the owner, Charles, is the MAN! And don't get me started on that turkey bacon breakfast burrito! I absolutely inhaled that thang. All the ingredients are fresh and you can tell they make that thang with love. My go-to breakfast. Friendly staff, great coffee and restroom for customers. They have a few unique coffee drinks and non coffee / tea options as well. We took forever to order bc we couldn't decide, but the staff was super patient with us. We tried the Vietnamese cold brew & the soy Thai latte. Both drinks we got half sweet because we like strong coffee flavor and not overly sweet. The Vietnamese cold brew was bomb, my husband liked this drink a lot. He said he wanted to come back and it was Better than some of the other coffee places we tried prior. My Thai Latte was good, but even at half sweet, it was a little too sweet for my liking. Still great tho, I just added extra ice to it and was perfect. They have some July specials as well, I may have to try honey coconut latte with cinnamon next time we visit. This place is a hidden treasure. My office has supported them for two years on Juneteenth, and then some. Haven't tried their coffees and beverages, but their food is out of this world. Went out of my way, heading back to the office after my seminar event. Ordered their Veggie Power Wrap. Healthy could not taste better. Mmmmm, mmm, mm! YUM MYYY! Ordered through Yelp. Saved me time. The Carlitos Way Omelette is the only way I eat an omelette. Nothing else comes close. You definitely feel part of the crew instead of just another buck. Coffee is strong and delicious. I've been waiting forever to try this place, because I rarely found myself in Chinatown during the daytime. Now that I'm around weekdays, I've found my new go-to for breakfast. This place is it. It's the move, it's a vibe, it's lit and I'm here for it. This is everything I love about a small, locally owned business. Fresh pastries, bagels and croissants made in house, creative options, and chill, friendly staff and the owner on site ready to explain the ins and outs of what they do and talk story. They're black owned (I'm always rooting for everybody black, so yasss to that) and they had a vibe that makes me want to keep coming back. I ordered a matcha latte with oat milk, that came with latte art (a first for me, and it was Betty Boop, my spiritual guide), and two breakfast sandwiches, one on a croissant and one on a bagel. Baby, these breads were doing what they needed to be doing. I love a well-made carb. The staff was so sweet and even hooked it up with the most delicious pastry. It has a nice chocolate flavor for the cold brew, and Audry tastes like a horchata. The cinnamon is the first flavor you would taste, and the second note of a chocolate with cream. I see our CM Jessica Y said it "Pumpkin Pie Latte"!! and yes they have Oat milk!!! This adorable cafe is right on South St downtown where I decided to stop in after a couple shopping trip since I'm already parked. Cutest little nook with incredible huge offerings you just wouldn't expect. Yes I had to get the Pumpkin Pie latte with oat milk which was super yummy and the breakfast burrito (Turkey bacon, organic eggs, feta, cheddar, tater tots, spinach and organic Greek yogurt) all wrapped up in what looks like a multi grain tortilla. This massive wonder was the absolute perfect bite incredibly delicious with my latte. With the friendliest staff wonderful environment and the detail to their food and drinks which you see a roaster so you know what's up, I can see why this Local Joe is certainly no ordinary Joe you really need to experience! There are some outside seating but after 10am the place was very busy so if you want to relax and drink coffee outside, I recommend earlier morning time. I had pumpkin pie latte. It's autumn so I wanted to feel the season. It tasted good. Not too sweet but sweet enough and cinnamon tasted good. I was tasting autumn and the latte art was a cat in front of a fan LOL. It's still summer in Hawaii. It was so cute that I had to take some pictures and looked at it a lot before I drink and the picture goes away. My friend and I shared Veggie Power Wrap. Stumbled across this place while looking for coffee near Chinatown, and it did anything but disappoint! The staff was kind and provided a positive vibe in the shop, plus had fast service. The decor, music, and fun vibe were entertaining and made me want to come again. But the coffee - was phenomenal! They have a large spot inside set up for roasting which was very cool and makes me feel like I'm getting a great product. We had the iced Thai Latte with dark chocolate, recommended by the barista, and it was sweet and refreshing. The Macnut latte was great, and the espresso used had a nice crisp flavor. Not on their menu in store, but they also do gelato ice blended drinks, (like a milkshake with coffee), and that was amazing. Great flavor and just enough coffee taste. This is me trying to explore the breakfast scene in downtown. I've heard of Local Joe a while ago and I've always wanted to come! I love that you can smell the coffee from a block away, and I knew I was getting closer based on that. Located on the edge of downtown facing Pier 14, this cute little spot embodies the breakfast coffee experience. Their menu includes coffees, teas, smoothies, and even a variety of breakfast food items (vegan items as well). They have this huge coffee machine that takes up half the space so you know their coffee is legit. However, today I got an iced matcha latte (coffee is a sometimes item for me) and their bagel and lox. Both were really good, and I got to enjoy it in their outside seating area. The owner of the shop was very friendly, he knew exactly what I was looking for every time I walked back into the store! As I was looking around cluelessly, he asked "straws?" YES. "Trash can?" YES. It's like he was reading my mind! I'll definitely be coming back to try more of their menu items but for sure their coffee! Parking: I parked in the underground municipal parking along beretania street and it was a couple blocks down from there. A nice walk through Chinatown if you like a little exploring. read more
