I went to dinner at Local last night. The service is great and the ambiance is warm. I ordered the scallop entree which came to me quickly. The scallops were overcooked but lukewarm and over a sauce that was cold. The accompanying asparagus was hard and wilted. When the waiter asked me how the food was I told her but nothing was done to remedy it. I've been here before and the burgers are good. This is a super trendy place! Our son the foodie has taken us there at least three times. I think I'm just too "old" to appreciate Local because I just don't get what the big deal is. I have been thinking about the poutine fries since I visited Billings last October! They did not disappoint! I absolutely love that you do not need to salt or season anything at your table because the food is so delicious! Our main courses were the shrimp pizza and the NY Steak with bleu cheese potatoes and carrots. I ordered a rare steak and that is exactly what I got! Well seasoned! Perfect! The pizza was wonderful and we had to try the prosciutto wrapped asparagus! Again, perfect! The pepper on the plate with the perfectly cooked egg topped it all off! Popped in for dinner on our road trip through Billings from NYC to LA. Our appetizer of cauliflower with with whipped blue cheese and hot sauce was so tasty I wondered why I haven't had this before. I ordered a pork cheek that was tender and then crispy with a parsley pistou that balanced the fattiness of cheek perfectly. And the local beers we drank with everything were also great. Staff was so friendly when we asked about local sights and activities. Overall it was a delicious meal and such a wonderful surprise to find on our trip through Montana! read more

Stopped in on a Sunday morning, seating was half full, but we were told we needed a reservation. As we stood outside determining a place to go, the hostess said she had 2 seats at the bar, but we we had to be under 1 hour and 15 minutes as they were reserved afterwards. The food was very good. I kept looking around to see if the tables would fill up, but as we left, only 2-3 tables were seated... the rest were empty. The way we were welcomed was very rude for the amount of seating that was available. If there had been a rush, I would have understood, but the place was 2/3 empty the entire time we were there. I rated a 2, 4 stars for the food, but a 1 star for customer appreciation. Be thankful you have people coming in... it will be sometime before I consider coming back. read more

It was decent. Kind of an odd experience. The steak that the waiter recommended was really tough and grisly even though it was a New York cut. Disappointed there. The mashed potatoes and veggies were great. And the fries that my wife got were fantastic. She had the chef's burger and was pleased. Dinner last night was quite good. Market salad and shrimp tacos were good. Nice server, menu varied. Weird that they wouldn't let us have the wine we brought from our cellar - they said it's not legally allowed, which is not true. We're used to paying "corkage," a fee for the restaurant to open the wine, provide glasses, etc., but they just said no. So don't try to take your own wine! read more

Amazing service. Even better food. Had the crab cakes, too much red pepper, but quite tasty nonetheless thanks to the remolade. Main course was the lamb shank. Fantastic. Cooked perfectly, never mind the unnecessary onion rings on top. Desert of the day was a peanut butter mousse that absolutely stole the show. I really, really, really wanted to love this place. I ended up just kind of liking it. First off, it's darling. I think the concept is a great addition to the west end of Billings. It's small, so requires reservations. I assumed that the limited amount of tables would equal great, prompt service... not so much. We arrived for our reservation and had to wait 10 minutes for our table - no big deal. We grabbed beers while we waited. Once we were seated is when it got weird... all the servers kept walking past us. No eye contact, nothing. It was to the point of being awkward, considering how small the place is! Finally, we were helped - by the same person that seated us. The menu is fairly limited, but the items we got were really good (bison hash and lamb shank). The service was just okay, but certainly not good enough to reflect Local's prices! We will go back to try their weekend brunch - fingers crossed for a better experience! read more

This restaurant is a great addition to Billings and located in a spot that was desperate for a restaurant of its nature. The atmosphere is upscale casual and the patio with the hanging raw light bulbs and heaters make it for a cozy experience. The staff was very helpful and knowledgable, full of suggestions. The food was flavorful, creative and came out quickly but there is something to be desired in the portion of food to price ratio. Local bar and kitchen will definitely be a destination restaurant. Terrible service, waiter (Jared) did not put in our order and had to wait 1 hour for our food that should have taken 20 minutes. Following forgetting to put in our order he yelled at us and told us the box up our food and leave. Staff was generally rude from the moment we walked in. Also, was very unapologetic. Would never come back again due to extremely poor service. However the horrid service, the food was wonderful. Pancakes were light and fluffy and hash browns were perfect. read more

My Girlfriend and I went here for Breakfast today. We arrived and were told the wait was over an hour due to reservations. There were probably a total of 6 people eating and about 6 tables open! A establishment of this size should not be taking reservations for breakfast on a weekend when it should be first come first serve when half of those reservations won't even show up. But I guess it's their money they want to lose on the several groups they pretty much turned away today. While this is a very nice, small neighborhood restaurant in Billings, my experience with the food was just plain bad. First of all, they let someone take the table that was reserved for us. Luckily, they seated us at another table fairly quickly. I ordered the lamb shank. It comes with three large onion rings draped over the bone. Everything was cold! The onion rings were soggy and tasteless. No complaints about the service. Everyone was very nice and friendly. Bottom line is, however, you must serve good food to stay above the crowd! Not sure I would go back the next time I'm in Billings. read more

Finally made it in to Local. The restaurant is pretty small but the flavors are big!!! Probably the best meal I've had in Billings since I moved back. The Bison Hash was spectacular as well as the Poutine. The chocolate dessert was amazing too. Definitely going back soon, if I can find a spot!!! read more

How did I go so long without trying this place? I've lived and dined in a number of larger cities with lots of trendy restaurants, and I guess I had written The Local off as a flash in the pan that was trying to be something Billings wasn't ready for. Initial reports from my friends seemed to indicate that the portion sizes were tiny, the wait staff indifferent. I felt validated in my assessment, but it turns out I was WAY wrong. Maybe my friends were trying to keep this place to themselves. Maybe The Local was just having some typical restaurant startup friction. Whatever the case, they've got it dialed in today, and they're doing some seriously wonderful things. We went for an early Sunday brunch. The food was absolutely dynamite in every dimension, and the service was some of the best I've had, like ever. I took a look at their dinner menu, too, and I predict we'll be checking them out for dinner this coming week. Definitely call ahead and get a reservation. You will not be disappointed. read more

I hate it when you have such great expectations and the restaurant falls short. Had reservations for 2 and when we asked to sit outside on the patio the hostess sneered because she wanted to stuff us into a tiny corner inside. At first I thought I misinterpreted her disdain, but then when she brought us glasses of water the same annoyed look crossed her face while setting them down. Ok, whatever... We ordered 2 of the specials, the monkfish with cornmeal breading and zucchini, and the tagliatelle pasta with peas and prosciutto. We ordered 2 glasses of wine which were ok, although the selection of wines by the glass is very small, despite all the full bottles they'd like you to buy. I was a little surprised that we got no salads with the entrees and no bread or anything else for the table. The food arrived quickly and looked amazing. The fish was cooked perfectly and the zucchini was very good, but the tomato sauce was kinda funky. Unfortunately, the pasta dish was a disaster. First, if you're gonna charge $24 for a homemade pasta dish, there better be more than 6 noodles on the plate. Also, someone in the kitchen needs to watch the Food Network and learn how to make and cook fresh pasta. The pasta was too thick and rolled out unevenly, so it was chewy and a bit gummy. The sauce with the peas and prosciutto was delicious but the prosciutto was a bit overcooked and tough. The taste was spot on, but it didn't make up for the sparse, dense pasta and hard little pieces of prosciutto. Almost forgot - the waiter said the pasta dish had a poached quail egg, so that the sauce would be similar to a carbonara sauce. But alas, the poached egg was overcooked and was mostly hard and not runny enough to pull off a carbonara. Oh well, the second glasses of wine made up for it. Stopped by for brunch and didn't have a reservation. They were kind to seat us at the bar but as the time went on about half the restaurant opened up and it was a little weird they didn't seat us at one of the tables. Ordered OJ and a latte. OJ is from concentrate which I had expected fresh squeezed and latte was cold. Had to send latte back, which I hate doing, but it was not just like warm it was cold. Food was pretty speedy and overall tastes good. Ordered the French toast, regular breakfast and the pancake special. Hash browns were delicious and the eggs were moist, not rubbery or loafy. Pancake a little dry and FT a tad over cooked. One caveat I do have some high expectations moving from the west coast so overall 3 stars ain't bad and I'll try it again. Tip: call for reservations to get a table though there was plenty open that weren't seated the whole 45 minutes we were there. read more

We eat here once every couple of weeks. Small place, nice decor. Patio seating weather allowing. Reservations recommended, especially on weekends. You may get a seat at the bar if you walk in. They pride themselves on their wine selection. I order the salad every time I come. It is different each time, based on what local produce is available and the chef's inspiration. I usually get the Staff Burger, another creation that varies each time. Flavors are wonderful. You will find a favorite and struggle to branch out and try something else. I've only come here for brunch but they do a spectacular job of it. The food is excellent! The prices are good for the portion sizes which easily include enough for leftovers for dinner later in the day. The mimosas are a bit small for the price but they come up with some creative and delicious flavors. Definitely one of my favorite brunch places in town.
