We went to Loco Ono for lunch. As I walked in I noticed it looked familiar even though I hadn't been here before. After chatting with the cashier I found out it used to be a Poke King but the owners split the 4 restaurants so now 2 are Poke Kings and 2 are Loco Ono. Great to know because the Loco Onos have cooked food also. My hubby isn't a fan of poke so now we have a place where we both can enjoy a meal. Hubby had the garlic chicken which he said had the perfect amount of garlic and he enjoyed his meal. I loved my poke with the sesame sauce and plenty of toppings, including one of my newest favorites furikake. All of my fish was fresh tasting and I loved the 2 scoops of crab salad My only recommendation would be a different brand of chopsticks, the ones I got were too rough, woody. I don't know how to explain it, but since I got our meals to go I just used my own chopsticks. Happy to support another local spot, and thanks to Yelp for turning me onto them. A The food was very good, but I think something was lost between the time I ordered the food plus the time in transit, I expect that when I'm able to get my chance to eat the food immediately after it's prepared, that the missing star will appear. So ono! I don't often take the time to leave a review, but this was so good, I just had to give recognition. My wife and I are moving cross-country from the Midwest to California. After a long day of driving from Salt Lake City, we arrived in the Reno area. I ordered a combo with teri chicken and mochiko chicken, both of which were excellent. The mochiko chicken was especially good- crunchy and flavorful. The rice and mac salad were on point. I also got a side of kimchi, which was good and authentic (I am picky, being part Korean). My wife got a poke bowl, which was very fresh and tasty. The musubi was done correctly, and was great. Overall, the food compared very favorably to local grindz we have enjoyed in the islands. Another good spot for poke. I like their presentation. Unlike other poke bowls, Loco Ono places two scoops of rice at one end of a rectangle dish and crab mix at the other end if you like. Then the fish is tossed with sauce and some toppings you choose in a bowl and poured in the middle of the dish. I mixed it up with salmon tuna and shrimp. All were good, the salmon could have been cut better as several pieces were strung together making my chopstick experience a good laugh for anyone who noticed. I would say this place is pretty good for a poke place! Portions are huge and I love the dish they serve it in so you can mix it all up. I ordered a regular poke bowl with rice, wonton chips, spicy tuna, crab, jalapeños, edamame, white onions, all 4 of the sauces and some of the dry toppings and it was pretty good! I wish it had a little more sauce it flavor it up but it was still good. A little pricey for a poke bowl but I did order it online to be delivered so that's probably why. I LOVED the salmon tacos at the other location. This one I came into 30 minutes before closing and there was a group of people that followed in behind me. The crew had pretty much finished closing the line by then, they already dumped all the rice and when I sampled the poke, it was honestly so bad I spit out both samples and got a drink to wash the taste out of my mouth. The tacos were underwhelming which totally sucks because I got them months before at the location in Reno and they were to die for and these were almost not good enough for me to even finish eating. I was jazzed to have this near my house but I'd rather drive into down for a good salmon belly taco than come back here. This place is supposed to be known for its quality and it did not hit the mark for me. I live in Reno but don't mind taking a drive to Sparks for food this good! We ordered the katsu chicken, teriyaki chicken and deluxe saimin-everything was delicious! The chicken dishes were served with a large portion of rice and one of the best macaroni salads I've ever had. Stop being curious about if Loco Ono is worth your money or time, and just do yourself the favor of giving this Hawaiian inspired restaurant a shot. I had the pleasure of eating to go at Loco Ono yesterday and tried out a Mixed Plate order with Mochiko Fried Chicken and Kalbi as my two protein options. There are seven total protein options for a Mixed Plate and I was given the option of ordering Rice, Mac Salad or Greens as a side with my Mix Plate order. I went with mixed greens as my Mixed Plate side and ordered a side of Mac Salad. The Mochiko Chicken and Kalbi were placed upon a bed of Cabbage with a bit of Spring Mix on the side. The side order of Mac Salad came in two 5.5oz containers. (In hindsight, I think one of the 5.5oz Mac Salad comes with a lunch order.) I could have used one or two more pieces of Kalbi, and/or Mochiko Chicken, but the amount of protein provided was agreeable. Quantity of greens compared to the amount of protein was satisfactory and the Mac Salad was a generous portion for 1.50$. I used a small amount of the delicious Salad Dressing provided and had a small salad with the cabbage and Spring mix left after I absolutely ravished the protein. The Mochiko Chicken was easily the highlight of my meal. The Mochiko Chicken was fried perfectly. Each bite was so juicy and tender it was almost hard to tell this piece of Chicken had been fried, and yet, each bite still had enough crunch to remind me that this piece of Chicken had in fact been fried. Oily is not a word I would remotely bring close to representing the taste or texture this fried Chicken had on my palate. Every bite of the Mochiko Chicken transported me into a world of Hawaiian inspired flavor with just enough heat to add a kick, but not enough heat to disrupt the other flavor profiles. One could even argue the heat enhanced the other flavors ever so slightly, truly delicious. The Mochiko Chicken is a "must have" protein option in my opinion and I will be reluctant to replace Mochiko Chicken with any other meat option in further Mix Plate orders from Loco Ono unless there is another hidden protein gem at this restaurant. The Mac Salad was decent overall, when eaten in between bites of the Mochiko Chicken and Kalbi I found the texture and overall flavors to be a nice reprieve from the saltiness of the protein. However, I feel the Mac Salad was a bit bland with the seasoning and could have used a tiny bit more flavor while still being able to retain the ability to provide a welcome break from the saltiness of the protein. The Kalbi was succulent and just a tad on the chewy side. Personally, I enjoyed the chewy nature of the Kalbi and chomped every bite with joy. The Kalbi tasted like Teriyaki with a bit of a "island twist" and was noticeably more salty than the Mochiko Chicken but was not overpowering my taste buds with salt. No regrets here, I recommend giving this protein option a shot, well worth your time. The next time I return here, I will likely order a Mixed Plate with Mochiko Chicken and Chicken Katsu, or maybe even just Mochiko Chicken to be honest. No Mac Salad next time but I may however order a side of Rice or Kimchi. I will likely try the Kalbi again after I settle on what my "favorite" two protein options that come with the Mixed Plate are and after many Mixed Plates with half Mochiko Chicken. The Mochiko Chicken is just too scrumdiddlyumptious to pass up on when visiting Loco Ono, I cannot deny myself the chance of consuming more Mochiko Chicken when I venture over to Loco Ono once more. read more
