I trusted this place because of their rave reviews on Yelp and my initial experiences with small repairs and tuneups were always good. However, I now think they're just as shady as the next place...the location is going to make it hard to not go back, but I cannot fully trust them. We took our car in because the A/C hasn't been working all year, the motor in one door was dying, and we needed new rotors. They charged us to run a test on the A/C to figure out what was wrong - at the time no sign of leak, but the compressor needed to be replaced. We fixed the rotors and door and decided to hold off on the a/c, we'd just go without and use our windows. However, after driving our car for one day and parking it, we couldn't get it to run. It would start and then cut out. We towed the car to them, and, of course we had to pay for another test (this time $167) just to figure out what was wrong. They said we needed a new computer chip due to water damage...a cost of $700. Of course there is not a good answer as to how it got damaged. Naturally, it was hard to not think that the two visits were somehow related, but they gave us reasons why it had nothing to do with the last time we took the car in, even though they were just testing the a/c which is right above the chip. I might have been able to trust their response if it hadn't been for one other thing... We mentioned that we were thinking about getting a new car, and they said that the owner buys used cars. The blue book trade in value for our car in fair condition is $2800...of course, we knew that needing a computer chip it wouldn't be worth that much, but their offer was $600! Way to take advantage of people when they're in need of money... read more

Back in November '12, I had a problem with my alternator and was dreading the process of getting it replaced. After calling around, I decided to take my car here. The price was right, they were very professional, and just the other day they called to follow up on the service performed. I have some more work to be done on my vehicle and will definitely be heading back here. Great to know I can rely on Logan Square Auto Repair for this, and would recommend it to anyone. read more

We've all heard horror stories of auto repair shops marking up repair costs by 200-300%. Well, I think I've got those beat. My vehicle failed emissions and was throwing 3 fault codes, so I took it in to these guys to get a quote. They quoted me at $1500 to fix the three fault codes, with a breif description of what each repair would be. Being an engineer, I decided to look deeper into the issue and what I found was a bit surprising. The first repair was quoted at $113 for parts, and I found the parts at Napa for $46. The labor for the first repair was $88, pretty standard. The $67 markup on parts was pretty ridiculous but this quote wasn't all that abnormal. The second repair was quoted at $88 for parts and $88 for labor. I found the parts online for $40. Again, annoying but relatively standard. The third repair was quoted at $944. It's a very involved repair and from what I read online, this quote was only a bit above standard for the repair at any other shop. So far so good (for the most part). None of these seem too alarming thus far given what they involve. But, I decided to proceed with the first and second repairs myself, with my limited knowledge of automobiles. The first repair cost me $46 and 3 hrs of (inexperienced) labor. The second ended up only costing me $10 (the other $30 part was not necessary). Here's the kicker: THE THIRD FAULT CODE WAS A PRODUCT OF THE FIRST!!! Once I fixed the first fault code, the third also went away and upon further research, they are often related. That's right, the third repair was NOT EVEN NECESSARY. I passed emissions today with flying colors. So in total I paid $56 and 3 hrs of labor to fix what they quoted me at $1500 for (including diagnostics and cook county tax). How the shop failed to make this connection and at least make a decent effort to save me the almost $1000 extra in repairs is beyond me. That's not to mention the $30 in redundancy for repair #2. To me, this is just another example of the annoying repair shop that preys on uniformed customers. I gave it two stars only because they were friendly and prompt, and their customer service was solid. My gut says go with 1 star but I liked the guy who helped me, so I just can't do it. My advice: If your vehicle requires anything more than an oil change, get it done elsewhere. read more

These guys are great. My 04 Corolla was starting to sound like a lawn mower, so I took it in to find out it was the exhaust. They kept it over night and fixed it right up the next day. Nice customer area, friendly service writer. Also, they told me other services I might need with my car, but didn't pressure me into paying for them, just told me I'd need to take care of it ASAP. So I took my car in to get a wheel hub replaced. My normal shop was out in the suburbs and I had moved to the city. Long story short, they took care of it. However, about four weeks later, something had gone wrong and a bolt had come out and started playing havoc with various other parts of my ABS system. I wound up on the side of the road waiting for a AAA wrecker. The garage I took it to then showed me the problem and suggested I alert the people who changed my wheel hub of the issue to see what would happen. Once I contacted management, I asked if they stand behind their work. They insisted that they did. I brought then up to date on the situation and the next morning they towed my car from the burbs back into the city. Later that day, they called to inform me that the problems that had happen would be completely fixed, along with replacement parts being placed on the car for all the damaged areas. When I came to pick the car up, I was also then refunded the fee I had to pay to the first shop that discovered the problem. Overall, top notch customer service that I didn't think I'd see in an auto shop these days, and I'll continue to use them for auto repairs. read more

A short while back, the owner of Logan Square Auto Care wrote me a note explaining that things have changed and he would really like to have another shot at our business. As fate would have it, my wife's car needed to be checked out and we decided that if an owner takes the time to apologize for a situation that happened two years ago, he must be serious. We showed up a few minutes before they closed and had a quick chat with the owner and one of the mechanics. Both were really nice and helpful. The owner was very gracious and offered a great discount to show his appreciation for us giving them another shot. Because it was right before closing, he asked to hold the car overnight and fix it the next day. He put the car on a lift and showed me exactly what was wrong. He then called and ordered the parts so I would know exactly how much it would cost. The next day, my wife picked up her car and it is running perfectly. The guys took good care of it and it was very affordable for the work that was put in. Affordable, helpful, and honest. Car problems are no fun, but we'll be back if they come up again. read more

This past visit the dealership quoted me almost $9,000 in repairs for my 2013. I took the list of suggested repairs to Logan Square Auto Repair and they were able to beat every price by a huge margin. Mayco & his team are incredible from beginning to end. He was so helpful and reassuring - despite my anxiety about car work - while his team had me back in my car within a day and my car driving better than I can remember in a long time. On my way to work I hit a pot hole and blew a tire. So of course I called around the city to see who could repair or replace it. I stumbled upon Logan Square Auto Repair, I spoke with a gentleman by the name of Antonio. Antonio was great! He made me feel at ease and quoted me a fair price. He even sent a tow truck driver to bring my car to the shop, since I was unable to move it due to it being flat. As soon as I arrived at the shop I was immediately greeted and taken care of. They looked over the car replaced my tire and I was out right before I had to go in for work!. This place is absolutely amazing! The entire staff are friendly and efficient. I've had some bad luck with my car, but most recently my catalytic converter was stolen. Seeing as it is not safe to drive without one, I had to find some place close to take it to, and fast. I took to yelp, looked at overall ratings and hours (didn't take time to read actual reviews though) and settled on Logan Square Auto Repair. I knew it was going to be expensive, so I wasn't really worried about price, I just needed my car to be fixed. They had to order the part, so it took a couple days, but when I got it back everything seemed great, minus the fact that it cost me almost $2,000- damn thieves! Rick mentioned that I should look into a product called a Catclamp which is put on over the catalytic converter to prevent another theft, so I ordered one because I really did not want this to happen again. Fast forward a few weeks, my brake light comes on and the Catclamp arrives. I take it in to the Marathon I have taken it to for years to check the brake light and install the Catclamp. Unfortunately, the Catclamp could not be installed because of how Logan Square Auto repair attached my new catalytic converter, they essentially welded it to the bottom of my car. He checked the brakes, and everything was fine, Logan Square Auto Repair messed up the sensor. Well, at least my brakes were okay. Fast forward another few weeks and my check engine light comes on. I take it in to the Marathon again, and they tell me it is because Logan Square Auto Repair installed the WRONG SIZE CATALYTIC CONVERTER and my car probably has a few days to live. So, now I am shopping for a new car, and I most certainly will not ever be taking it to Logan Square Auto Repair. read more

As someone who knows very little about cars, I've always been extremely nervous when bringing mine in for repairs. However, I've been coming to Logan Square Auto Repair for several years now and realize that it's about time I posted a review to say how much I value their work. They are friendly, capable, and straight-forward. I feel comfortable leaving my car with them and trust them when they tell me I need to have something done. I am very impressed with the ability of their workers to explain what is going on. They do work in a timely manner. I have never come back to my car only to find all kinds of 'add-on' charges--something that absolutely has happened in other places. Today when I had brake-work done, they took the car out for a test drive, and when they thought it might still be less than perfect, promptly put it back on the lift and tweaked it to make sure the job was done properly. Where do I even begin? Last year I opened a restaurant across the street from these guys and on one of our first nights of service they came by to support us, which prompted me to give them my business in return and thank goodness I did--they're simply the BEST. My boyfriend and I own a Ford Transit van that has had a seemingly undiagnosable, unfixable problem for years. We've taken it to over seven mechanics, and not one could figure out the source of our problem. But Logan Square worked tirelessly and diligently to get to root of it, and now, after 4 years the problem is finally fixed! Not only are the guys at Logan Square good at what they do they do it kindness, honesty, and respect. We never questioned their judgment or integrity once, and I can quite honestly say that dealing with them is an actual delight. How many people can that about bringing their car into the shop??? After my last review, Rick reached out to me to find out how he could earn back my business so I decided to give Logan Square Auto Repair a second chance. Today I dropped my car off for an oil change and mentioned there's a weird noise coming from the engine. Rick said they'd check it out for me and let me know. An hour later he called to let me know the oil change was complete and the noise is my water pump. Additionally he told me I have a few thousand miles left on my rear brakes and my battery is low. He offered to give me a discount on the water pump repair, fortunately for me it's covered under my car's warranty (yay Toyota certified used program!). I picked up my car and was given a very nice discount on the oil change as a thank you for giving them a second chance. I sincerely appreciate the gesture and the care of looking at potential issues with my car. I'm happy I gave LSAR a second chance. They just might get the opportunity to change my brakes in a few weeks, and maybe they'll earn a five star review at that time. read more

The guys at Logan Square Auto Repair were very helpful and honest. I brought my car (2005 Toyota Matrix for those interested in tracking what makes and models they can handle) in for an oil change and basic tune-up that was done quickly, to my specifications, and for a reasonable price. While they had my car, I also had them give me an estimate for my 90,000 mile inspection, and, while I ultimately decided to wait for when I have more time to leave my car for service, the price I was quoted was well within my reasonable expectations. The service was friendly and professional, and my overall experience was fine. When the time comes for my next servicing, I'll be more than happy to bring my car back here, and I'm happy to recommend them to others. read more

I'm hesitant to recommend this place. I originally took my Acura here to get the transmission rebuilt. I was quoted a fair price and the reviews online suggested that this place was good. After taking my vehicle there I felt I wasn't kept up to date with what was going on with my vehicle. When I finally got my vehicle back, I drove it for 2 days and the transmission started making all sorts of noise. I took the vehicle back and they had to rebuild the transmission all over again. When I got back the vehicle a second time I noticed a steering creak. Again I took my vehicle back to them and this time they mentioned some plastic piece that needed to be secured, but was assured that it wasn't anything to worry about. However when I got home, I reviewed the dash cam footage of my vehicle, where a technician is talking to himself while test driving the car. He goes on about how Ricky told someone to tighten a bolt and that another technician didn't tighten it, and that caused the problems I was noticing. After this I didn't trust them, because Ricky is the one saying that it was just a piece of plastic making the noise. About a year later I noticed that the vehicle was making strange noises in the winter, and I took it back to them thinking it was something to do with the steering rack that had been making noise earlier. When they got back to me, they told me that they had greased the lower control arms and that the noise had gone away (that it was temporary fix, and to come back to get new ones installed when I could). However on the way home that night, I noticed the noise just as it had been before they touched it. So I'm confident that the noise was not the lower control arms as they had mentioned. All and all, I wouldn't recommend the place. Whatever they are doing, they aren't telling their customers the full truth. However they don't deserve a single star because when I did have issues with their work, they did take care of it at their expense. read more

I was a loyal customer for several years though their prices are exceedingly high. I thought they were trust-worthy, even though every repair came in over a thousand dollars. The final estimate, i took to three other shops. Not only was their cost twice as high, but it turns out the part in question was not even damaged! I would not recommend such dishonesty to anyone. On top of everything my car was always returned in a filthy state with the interior smudged with grease. And When I called for a tow they left me on the side of the highway for 3 hours mid winter and were a no-show. Need I say more?! read more

I could not be more impressed. I'm always nervous going to have work done on my car because it's blatantly obvious that I know nothing about cars. I came in with a broken glove compartment and a wet floor on the passenger's side that had been damp for weeks. They identified the problem immediately, unjammed my glove compartment, cleaned the leaves out of my air filter, and sent me on my way free of charge. They're honest, friendly and efficient. They recommended I change my breaks soon, but were not pushy about it like a lot of other places that recommend service for other things besides what your cars in for. I've downgraded them to 4 stars. $50 to install a battery??!! They charge me as much as they are allowed to. So even if it takes them 5 minutes, they charge the maximum allowable rate. I guess this is standard practice and I can't blame them for wanting to make $, but still... 50 bucks to put in a battery! And a lot more than that for other service items... Starting to wonder if I'd be better off at the dealership... Still nice enough guys, but definitely in it for the profit more than ever. Can't blame them, but for 5 stars you've got to go above and beyond. My previous POV: At one point the dealership wanted to charge me $160 for a diagnostic. These guys looked at it for free and actually recommended that I wait to do the service. We have taken our car there several times and each time I am impressed by the honesty and great communication. Caveat: I still think that, as with any mechanic shop, you should do your own research before making decisions. Also, the guy who owns the place is very courteous. The tire was good but the rim was rusted, they welded it and put it in the spare position and moved our spare. We were in town visiting my son a couple weeks ago and had what I thought was an issue with our front brakes and severe front-end vibration that started about 1/2 hour out from downtown. The van had had similar issues about 18 months ago and the symptoms were very similar so I was expecting the worst in terms of cost and time required to fix. I checked the AAA website for approved service shops and found a few in the area. After stopping by a couple shops that really did not give me a good feeling so-to-speak, I ended up at LSAR and was glad I did. I told them what I thought the issue was given the history of the vehicle and was able to get me an appointment at 10am the next day. We dropped it off at 9am when they opened. The mechanic called me a couple times during the morning to keep me advised of what they had found (and didn't find) during the test drive and subsequent multi-point inspection. I had the van back by early afternoon. Bottom line ... the problem was not brake related at all it was actually the aluminum lug nuts that had come loose during the 7-hour trip to Chicago. I had just had the oil changed and tires rotated prior to the trip. Our local service shop always recommends to come back and get the lug nuts tightened after 50-miles or so but it has never been an issue. Until now. The staff also reported an issue logged by the computer with my thermostat. When I asked about the severity of the code and should it be fixed, they said that given the weather forecast I would most likely be okay and I could have that looked at when I get home. It was fine on the trip home but has since run 'cold' the last couple days with the cold snap that hit Southern Indiana so it is going in to the local shop this week to be fixed. Bottom line...I was impressed with the service and professionalism by the team at LSAR. Given my situation being from out of town, they could have easily done a very expensive brake job on the van and I would not have been the wiser. Even though they had the van for about 4 hours, there was no charge for their time and effort. While they gave me the option of fixing the thermostat, they certainly did not do a 'heavy sell' on it. While I hope to not have any more vehicle issues when traveling to Chicago, I will be calling them if I do. read more

I have been going to this great repair shop for over a year, for my car and my Wife's car. The staff is always friendly, on time and most important, honest. Their quotes come in under most places, the work is done fast and right and I can't say enough good things about them. Logan is a Family run business that looks out for their customers and they run the shop right! If anything wasn't perfect they were very quick to get me back in there and out on the road feeling that my car was repaired well and very safe for my Family. First time using Logan Square Auto and I picked it based off of good Yelp reviews. My car had an oil leak that I couldn't locate. They fixed the leak which luckily ended up being a simple issue and seems to have solved the problem. That was the good part. They also did an oil change... The next morning after the oil change I checked the oil and discovered they over filled my oil by about a quart and according to the receipt they also used a heavier weight oil than what my car is supposed to have. An oil change should have been simple but they didn't do that right. Not trusting them again. read more

They've been able to explain things in ways I understand and I have even learned things about how my car works and gotten advice on what type of new car to buy when I was in the market. One time I was a bit skeptical about a part cost they quoted me (cat converter), but after shopping around online I realized that they were actually getting me a pretty good deal. So they've always been straight and honest with me. I use them for everything from oil changes to major part replacement and repair. I trust their assessments and their prices. They're courteous and fast, and Rick really knows his stuff. Even if I move from Logan Square, I foresee myself using Logan Auto for years to come. Four and a half years later and I still love this place! Ricky is awesome, the staff at the desk is always helpful and friendly, and the prices are still incredibly reasonable (hint: if you have a AAA card, ask for the discount!). I drive an old busted car that always needs more work than I can put into it, and Ricky is always happy to talk to me about what the issues are, what needs attention, and what I should keep an eye on. The final price is never more than the estimate given, and usually the turnaround is quite quick, meaning I can get my car back sooner rather than later :) This is a top notch neighborhood mechanic, and as long as I have a car in the city, they will be my go-to garage. They smoked a cigarette in my car and recommended an "overdue" oil change. I've worked in retail, so I'm strict about treating everyone on the other side of the counter with the upmost respect. I was patient and polite, so I know that the cigarette smoking was not an act of retail revenge but straight up indifference for your customers. As for the oil change, I told them that I was going on a trip, and they're BBB accredited and AAA approved, so we trusted the recommendation. Then we got home and looked at paperwork and saw that I had another 1000 miles to go to reach 5000 miles from my last oil change. I use synthetic and get oil changes more frequently than what the dealer recommends for my specific car. Now, I understand the idea of changing your oil before a road trip, but don't tell me I'm overdue if I haven't driven 5,000 miles yet. I was looking for my go to auto mechanic in a new neighborhood, a place where I could take my car every few months for whatever I needed. read more

Incredibly honest and fast service. Took my car in unsure of what the problem was but described the symptoms. Mechanics originally thought they'd have to charge me for a diagnostics test to find the problem, which is billed hourly. When they discovered the source of the problem, which matched the symptoms I described originally, they called me back to tell me they wouldn't charge me for the hourly diagnostics after all, only the $60 or so it would cost to make the repairs.
