I had such a wonderful experience at this Calabash caribbean estaurant! From the moment I walked in, I was impressed by how beautiful the décor was. On the corner of an art deco building and with red velvet roped entrance path, Calabash was looking to be something special! It had been a long time since I had authentic Jamaican cuisine, so was committed to dive in! The waiter was calm but attentive, a bit nervous only because he asked us if this was our first time at the restaurant and he wanted it to be a "beautiful " experience. Plenty of options on the menu but I had to go for the traditional jerk chicken and some sweet plantains, a Jamaican Mule and my friend had the Red Snapper with Escovitch sauce and salty plantains on the side and a Ting & Rum cocktail. They started us with a fantastic hot soup that was so good I wanted more, brilliant spicing and flavor, bold and savory. The seating was comfortable and the reggae music was flowing, all hail the good vibes of Bob Marley 'Mon! The decor was modern and classy with cloth table cloths and real flowers made it feel pampered. The jerk chicken was very moist and perfectly cooked with a crispy skin rich with a spice rub and the sauce was addictive, strong and deep in flavor with some heat sting but not overpowering. The sweet plantains were also cooked to perfection, caramel ones and juicy, fresh and warm. The red snapper came as a whole fish layered in vegetables and some fantastic sauce that was light but just right to not overwhelm the fish.. the fish was top tier tasty and also cooked to still be juicy and tender but not overdone, and the salty plaintains were like giant hearty potato cookies, a great meal overall! PASS. This is the worst Jamaican food I've had. We ordered the curry goat, Rasta pasta, grilled jerk chicken and fried green plantains. Curry Goat - Very chewy and gaming. The gaminess from the go overpowered the curry and just the overall flavor. Also there was not enough gravy to actually taste it by itself. It's almost as if I got what was left at the bottom of the pot. Very sad curry goat is my favorite comfort meal. Jerk Chicken - Very very disappointing. One I was not aware that the sauce would be on the side. Then just give me small ramekin (like the kind get to go) for 3/4 pieces of chicken. The cook of the chicken was good but no seasoning once so ever. You literally relied on the grill to season your chicken and the sauce. The sauce was very disappointing never had I have I ever had someone give me Sweet Baby Rays BBQ sauce and call it jerk. There was nothing jerk about this dish ONCE. SO. EVER. Just grilled drum stick and a thigh at regular BBQ sauce. Plantains - Dry and NO Rasta Pasta - Just plain noodles, plain cheese sauce with a couple peppers. I had to use what little sauce I had from my curry goat to season and moisten this dish. Call me spoiled, I'm new here, born and raised in Chicago where we jerk EVERYTHING in our sleep and lived in NYC have the pleasure of having very close Jamaican, Trini and Haitian friends. Maybe this place cater its authentic flavors and recipe's to their location and demographic...IDK but there will be no second chance from us. We had the Jamaican style curry goat. It was spicy and tasted amazing. It by far is my favorite dish and recommend it. There is no spice level that I can recall, so if you're not into spicy, watch out. We also had the curried fish. Was also delish. My husband and I went when it was slow, so I'm not sure how the service would be otherwise, but they were attentive and suggested dishes for us. Pistachio ricotta cake. Nice (not too sweet) end to the meal. Server (J.P.) was attentive, after I asked about the size of the space, offered a brief you. Aside from the eleven tables in main dining room, there is a beautiful outdoor patio space large enough for 200, a small pizza/burger den, and a small room for private dining or gathering. We were greeted with warmth and attentive service on a slower Sunday afternoon. This is a newer restaurant in Sacramento and I wanted to come to try their fish. I was very very impressed and pleased with everything this restaurant has to offer. The owner, JP, was so welcoming and very easy to chat with. He started us off with complimentary red bean soup and I enjoyed the light flavors very much. Secondly, the fish I ordered (whole snapper) was cooked perfectly, crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. The flavor pairings were also what I expected. I recommend asking JP or another staff about the preparation in order to get the best option for you. The plantains were crispy and delicious, not too salty. Additionally the drinks were very well made, I got the pineapple and ginger drink and it had very good balance of both ingredients. JP even replaced my partner's Mint Julep with the drink I ordered as he said he might have made it too sour. At the end of our meal, he gave us a tour of the restaurant and I am looking forward to seeing how it continues to expand and develop. Very beautiful and clean space! We went here on a Friday evening with the kids and had such a great experience. The food was incredible. I've been on the hunt for amazing fried chicken ever since South closed. Tori's Place also makes excellent fried chicken, but it's a bit of a trek for us--so to find something this good right in the neighborhood feels like a dream. Perfectly crispy and full of flavor. But the real star for me was the jerk chicken...I didn't even get a picture because I couldn't stop eating it. It came with extra sauce on the side and I seriously could've drunk it, it was that good. For sides, we tried the salty green plantains (excellent) and the jasmine rice, which had the slightest hint of sweetness that paired perfectly with the chicken. Since we had the kids with us, we kept the sides simple, but I saw other tables getting a variety that I can't wait to try next time. The staff was so kind and welcoming, and the atmosphere is beautiful. The AC was blasting, which felt amazing! So many restaurants have been slacking on that during this heat wave, so it was a real treat to actually feel comfortable while dining. My wife and I noticed a new restaurant opened up on Arden & Del Paso driving by one day and figured we'd give it a shot seeing it's a Caribbean food joint. We tried the beef & vegetable dumpling soup, stamp & go fritters, coconut shrimp and a delicious Jamaican Sorrel drink to wash it down. Overall it was all delicious and had great unique flavors. Next time we'll try another drink and jerk chicken & fish or possibly Rasta pasta and sweet fried plantains.
