I got two of my precious babies from here and couldn't ask for more. Staff is very helpful and helped the process to be easier. I love coming here just to play and see all the kitty's. It's nice to know people sacrifice their time to help these animals. I will definitely be getting my next kitty from here! Side note: I don't blame them for "interrogating" people (as some yelpers put it as). They work for a cause to try to not have these animals on the street again or in bad homes. All the cats look healthy and happy! We adopted a pair of kittens from them. The adoption process is very simple. I was a little intimidated at first cuz of the reviews. But...it's far from the truth. I definitely recommend everyone to read their adoption policy first before applying. They really care about their cats and will NOT make any exception. I can't say enough good things about this business. I have been involved in Rescue for many years and every single time I reach out for help they step up no questions asked. I like that they are thorough with their adoption protocol ensuring that all animals find a safe home. And if for some reason it doesn't work out they were turn their backs on their babies. They have been rescuing cats for years and years and they are delving into some dog rescue as well and I have personally seen some amazing things in the efforts to make things better for both dogs and cats on Long Island. The approval process is crazy than a mortgage, my boyfriend and I we work full time, we have everything to qualify they only were complaining because we're renting and we don't have any utility bills under our name because we don't pay utilities! "Adopt don't shop" Well not anymore, I am going shopping. These adoptions shelters making it impossible to adopt. Look, I understand why these rules are in place, but don't bitch and moan about having too many animals in your shelter when you won't let any of them be adopted. We have million animals dying in shelters in our country, and these groups are putting barriers in between homes and their animals. Most people are good people, particularly people who are walking into a shelter or a rescue group to save a life. You don't need to prove your employment or do a whole FBI investigation to prove that. Customer service is horrendous. Stay far away from this animal shelter. First, they try to force you to adopt two kittens instead of one. Then they tell you that you are approved to adopt and then they won't give you the kitten they agree to give you. I volunteered for years at Kitty Cove and have adopted two cats from there. I have donated my time and money to them and have been lied to. I have a beautiful home to give to a kitten, yet Helen lied to me and won't give me a kitten. She is bizarre and nasty. She should not be dealing with animals or humans. They are quick enough to take money and donations from you. She couldn't pull the money out of my hand fast enough when I gave a donation at the Long Beach Fair. Keep sucking on your vape pen, Helen. Hopefully, you don't get lung cancer. The best animal shelter I have ever seen. Helen is the most compassionate and caring person I have ever known. All the volunteers care about only 1 thing-the animals in their care. I have read the negative reviews and have only one thing to say: If you were turned down for adopting a pet, it was for good reasons. The place is super clean and the volunteers (they are ALL volunteers) know each kitten and cat by name. I came in looking to adopt a cat. i fell in love with a very sweet Tabby named Jule but the woman refused to let me adopt her bc i was "too young." uhm i'm almost 23 years old & have a cat and a dog. i think i could handle another cat. she was very condescending and made me feel bad for trying to save a life. it was almost like i was annoying her and the other volunteers they would not acknowledge me and kept talking to each other. its unbelievable how they treat a customer there. i would NOT recommend this place. this place was very dirty cats living in filthy conditions. It's funny while i was in here trying to adopt this cat i got a call from Mutts & Butts saying i was approved to adopt any cat i wanted. I went there and found the love of my life. I am literally shaking as I write this review. I can not believe how horrible these people are. My entire family went to kitty cove to adopt a pet this past weekend. My son had recently been hospitalized and this was a gift for him. We picked out two kittens. We have been prior cat owners and provided personal recommendations as well as a vet recommendation. Our prior pets were treated well and had appropriate medical care. In our home, which we own, between the four occupants, we have 4 bachelor's degrees, two Juris Doctors and a master's. I am a former prosecutor and currently in charge of the Office of Professional Integrity for a state agency. After jerking us around for three days (repeatedly promising they would call back when they didn't), we were denied. Helen, the owner, said it was because our previous cat was an indoor outdoor cat. I explained to Helen that, the same way I explained to the Office staff earlier, we would be happy to promise to keep the cats indoors and indeed would sign an agreement saying such. Letting our previous cat outside had not been a big philosophical position and we were more than convinced keeping a cat indoors would be safer. Helen went on a rant about a prior customer who had lied to her about this and said because she didn't know me, she couldn't trust my word. I offered additional references as well as any other documentation she wanted. I asked her not to stereotype against me because she had a bad prior experience. She told me, in her experience, people lie. I offered to sign a sworn document, to no avail. The only reason I pushed so hard was because we all fell in love with the kittens and were now devastated. I could probably qualify as a foster/adoptive parent for children easier than this. This establishment does not have the cat's best interests at heart and act arbitrarily and capriciously. They have neglected to interrogate me on the honest, trustworthy and reliable person that I am. I understand why they are cautious but that's when you ask questions to get a full picture on who this individual is. My relationship with kitty cove started 13 years ago when I adopted the love of my life, rosie. The process couldn't have been easier. After some paperwork and reference checks, we were on our way home with my sweet girl. I've had many cats over the years and she is by far the sweetest. Her foster mother did a wonderful job socializing rose and preparing her for her forever and loving home (my home). I don't know why I haven't reviewed kitty cove sooner as they deserve such a positive review....they gave me the best gift a girl could ask for. Since Rosie's foster did such an amazing job and I have much experience with raising kittens/cats, I decided to give back and become a foster myself. I am currently fostering a litter of four beautiful kittens from kitty cove and I couldn't be more grateful to be apart of their upbringing. Let me start this post by saying that anyone leaving a negative comment about Kitty Cove is just upset they weren't accepted as a suitable adopter. My experience with Kitty Cove could not have been more pleasant. The staff here are very friendly and deeply passionate about the cats in their care. They take in strays, often sick or abandoned, and do everything in their power to nurse them back to health so they may find a furrever home. It's wonderful that you're able to visit and play with the cats so you really get to know them before bringing one home. The application process was extremely straightforward: tell them about your household (pets, children, landlord), employment (are you home enough to care for a cat?), and beliefs on declawing. It's nice that I get a portion of my adoption fees back once I show proof that I fixed my kitties. Special shoutout to Alison, her passion for what she does is really amazing, and she will work with you and be very clear and open about what to expect and how to ease the cat into your life easily. She really knows each cat's personality very well. Thanks to Kitty Cove, Mila and Sibi have been added to our family, and we couldn't be more in love! My advice: stop by on a Saturday and check out the cats and the staff for yourself. If your home environment is safe and right for a kitty, you won't regret coming to Kitty Cove! read more

Well what I would say about Long Island Humane Society is that this place is amazing. Our story begins little more than a year ago my wife's friend from work had come upon a litter of kittens unfortunately the mother never came back to her litter of kittens so we took one kitten and we happily named get Emily. But at home we notice's she was having a hard time walking and slept a lot we brought her to our vet where we take our dog to just to get her all set up and get her Shots up-to-date the veterinarian told us that she was only three weeks old we were told that she was six weeks old unfortunately a kitten at that age needs to be fed approximately 3 to 4 hours a day and with our schedule it was very hard for us to be home and feed her and give her the attention that she needed so I frantically try to find a place to take her we went to North Shore animal league but to our surprise they told us that we needed to make an appointment And that we had to come the following week we knew that Emily would not be able to survive and of course at this time we fell in love with her so I frantically Google the a place and I came across the Long Island Humane Society a.k.a. Kitty Cove. We brought her there and spoke to Helen the supervisor. She saw the condition that Emily was in and as much as we had fallen in love with her we knew at that stage of her life we would not be able to take care of her the way she was supposed to be taken care of. As I left Kitty Cove. I said goodbye to Emily and left. I got emotional I got to the car my wife and my boys were very upset. So I decided to get out of my car and go back to Kitty Cove with my youngest son I asked them if we Were able to adopter her they said there is an application process and we would have to wait around three months until she was eligible for adoption. So we waited we checked and when we finally saw her a.k.a. heavenly Emily . We rushed to fill out an application and thank God we were able to adopt her and also bring her a brother named blu a.k.a. blu bear. I want to thank Helen for helping us and taking care of Emily so well making our family a little bit bigger. The lady who's in charge at this place is way too invasive with the application process. She wanted to speak to my HR director at work to verify my income. I can understand wanting to verify employment, but I don't see how it's any of her business how much money I make. She said in a condescending tone, "I need to make sure you can afford a kitty" Additionally, I think most people with professional careers don't want HR getting calls that would make it seem like they were interviewing somewhere else. As one of the other reviewers said, we arrived at the adoption center during feeding time and the lady acted like we were a burden. We asked to see one of the cats and she basically blew us off. These cats would be better served with different management. read more

I am very disappointed. My wife and I found this site online and planned to adopt a single kitten "Cooper"...we filled out the adoption form and was contacted by phone to discuss witch kitten and asked for references. At this time I was told we could adopt a single kitten from the litter and they would break up the litter for us. They called my Vet and found that I was a good person, responsible and worthy of adoption. They called me and told me I was approved and they needed a check to hold the cat I took the info and was just about to go to the post office to overnight a check. I received another phone call asking me to consider taking a pair from the litter . I spoke with my wife and we decided to just go with a single kitten. The woman now had issues with me being a resident of Massachusetts and not from Long Island and I as asked to look else where for a kitten that they would not place the kitten with me unless I purchased two. I have a big problem where they make up or try to change the requirements after telling me I had qualified and that I could adopt a single kitten. I am appalled by the prejudice actions because I was not from Long Island...The woman was very rude, inconsiderate and prejudice to my wife and I and we would not recommend this site to anyone read more

I cannot speak to the LB Humane Society generally. But I am very disappointed with my experience at Kitty Cove. Sadly, this place gives shelters a bad name. I adopted a kitty from them not long ago for an exorbitant adoption fee of $150. You would think that charging such a fee would allow them to provide a healthy and sanitary environment for their cats. FALSE. The place wreaked upon entry and was clearly very dirty. When I adopted my cat, he had a visible upper respiratory infection that had clearly been escalating for some time. Since then, he has been diagnosed with THREE parasites: Tapeworm, Giardia and Coccidia. From what I understood on his paperwork, he had been at the shelter from about 12 weeks to 10 months old. There are no other cats in my household and this one has remained indoor since adoption....leading to the simple solution that he contracted all of these parasites while at the shelter. These are all conditions that should have been caught in the amount of time he was at the shelter. In the end, I feel I rescued this cat from this shelter, where he would have undoubtedly continued to suffer without medical attention. Incredibly disappointed. If you want to rescue a cat from this shelter, then I advise you to do an immediate vet visit and fecal sample upon adoption. Kitty Cove: if you want people to keep coming to you, do better. read more

Although the women at kitty cove are extremely kind, the kitten I adopted from there has had nothing but problems. The first day I called them because I was concerned he wasn't eating, they basically told me to "force feed him". The vet said sometimes cats are nervous and don't eat the first two days. On day 3, he was fine. Since then, He has an upper respiratory infection and today was diagnosed with ringworm. When I called to let them know the cat had ringworm there response was "oh you should have brought him here" because the vet bill was obviously expensive and basically told me to ignore the directions the vet gave me because it would stress my cat out. The vet said another cat from this shelter had been there the week prior with the same infection. I'm listening to the vet. They seemed quite unconcerned that their is ringworm in their shelter. I appreciate their concern for the well-being of my cat and their dedication to all animals, but I think everyone should know this shelter is exposed to ringworm and is breeding unhealthy cats. I will not be adopting from nor returning here again. read more

Took my daughter in to adopt a kitten and had the same awful experience as others did - the woman who runs the place and her staff have horrible personalities and make you feel like they think that you're not capable of adopting. It is clear that they look for reasons to deny you an adoption rather than to facilitate an adoption. They treated us like we were an inconvenience to them. Every time I asked a question I was answered rudely and in a condescending tone. When I asked how long it could take for an adoption to be approved and if it could be done that day, the woman outright scoffed at me. I didn't think it was that absurd of a question, since in the past I have adopted animals from a shelter the same day that I visited. When I asked if I could fill out an adoption application the woman flat out ignored me while I stood at the counter. I had to ask her several times to please give me the form. It has been 3 weeks and I still haven't received a call from them to tell me if I was approved for an adoption. Because I was left with such a bad feeling, I went somewhere else the next day and adopted the best kitten. (Ironically, I adopted her the same day that I met her!) But I still think about all of those other poor kitties that have the unfortunate situation of being stuck in this place where people are making it harder for them to be adopted. Very sad. I hope that the women who run this place read these reviews and realize that while they might have good intentions, their attitudes and behavior have a negative impact on people and it isn't fair to those animals who need to find forever homes! read more
