Eighty-five miles! That's how far I drove, 85 miles...for a hamburger! Am I nuts, or what? My destination was the "Longhorn Saloon" in Edison, Washington up in the Skagit Valley. Edison is a small, out of the way (and I mean that quite literally) place, and if you didn't know it was there you really wouldn't know it was there. It's not even a town. (Here's a bit of trivia: newsman Edward R. Murrow graduated from Edison High School.) The U.S. Census Bureau calls Edison a "census-designated place (CDP), but I'd call it a community; a community of 133 people living in 59 "housing units" (more "government speak"). There are a handful of shops, a cafe, a couple of galleries, a liquor store and two taverns/restaurants. My destination, the "Longhorn Saloon", is one of those. So, if this place is so "out of the way", just how did I find out about it? Well, several years ago we lived on Whidbey Island and we would go through Edison on our way to Chuckanut Drive for oysters or to go up to Bellingham. Just about every time we went through Edison we'd say, "We need to stop here some time.", but we never did; we were always on our way somewhere else. But not today! While I'd been by the "Longhorn Saloon" on many occasions and it always seemed there were busy, I had never actually heard anything about the place. I looked them up on the internet and could find no website, but I did find several references and reviews on other sites. The general buzz was favorable, and that only made me want to see for myself all the more. We got there a little after noon and parked in their parking lot out back overlooking Edison Slough. There were already nearly a dozen customers when we got there, but the place was far from full. We started out with a couple of shots of Jameson and a couple of beers, Sam Adams Winter Lager for me and a Stella for my wife. We began our meal with a dozen oysters each, not on the half-shell, although that's how they're billed on the menu, but presented on an oyster plate with an assortment of accouterments. Good, but I prefer the "half-shell" presentation; with that you can be fairly certain that, having ostensibly just been shucked, your bi-valves are quite fresh. I don't mean to imply in any way that these oysters weren't, I'm just sayin'. While perusing the burger section of the menu, I had zeroed in on their "Double-Double" (double meat, double cheese, double bacon, along with your traditional garden representatives...lettuce, onion and tomato). After my experience at Hodad's with their double bacon cheeseburger, and taking into account the dozen oysters, I was expressing reservations at my ability to finish such a burger. Ron, a rather large fellow at the next table who had ridden his Harley over from Oak Harbor just to wrap himself around said "Double-Double", allowed that, oysters or no, he thought the "Double-Double" was do-able. Well OK, if Ron thinks so, that's good enough for me! My wife went for the fish-and-chips, and was sorry she did. The fried frozen cod was watery. She was wishing she had gone the way of the burger; I know I was glad I had. When the burger came I dove right in; hey, I'd just driven 85 miles for this, and I was ready! Tasty, juicy beef, melted cheese, crispy bacon and fresh lettuce, onion and tomato, all on a bun that, while not "artisan", was fresh and did its job without falling apart. I'm sorry to say I neglected to get a photo of my burger. After driving an hour and a half to get this burger, I immediately started in on it and didn't think about the photo until I was half-way through it. I did take a photo of it at that point, but let me assure you that a half-eaten burger just doesn't have the same visual allure as one that hasn't been ravaged by a famished road warrior. Ron was right, the "Double-Double" was do-able, and it left my mouth very, very happy. So, as you might guess, this burger, on my three tier scale of "worth the trip", "worth a stop" or "drive on by", rates a "worth the trip"...even an 85 mile trip! I can't say that I'd drive 85 miles for a burger anytime somebody drops a hat, but today I was glad I did. The Longhorn Saloon & Grill is located at 5754 Cains Ct in Edison, WA, where McTaggart Avenue meets Gilkey Avenue. They don't have a website, but they do have a phone and they can be reached by calling (360) 766-6330. Don't be afraid the drive out there; it only seems like it's in the middle of nowhere, and once you've been there you'll know that it's really in the middle of "somewhere". read more

The vibe is very chill and it is a great bar. Food was generally good, but the hamburger was a huge disappointment. Even though the service was good, the hamburger was not served the way I ordered it. It seemed my order requests which were pretty simple got lost or ignored. It was also very greasy and far too undercooked not in a good way. The taste of the meat was the biggest disappointment, as it tasted so gamey, and almost spoiled. I am not sure what was going on but something was way off and wrong with the flavor, which I verified with my dining partner. Maybe bad parts were ground into the meat, I just don't know. Otherwise it was seriously a great place hence the 3 stars after geing served a totally disappointing 1 star burger. It may have just been a bad day perhaps. Cute little town, total biker bar stop. Had the fried mushrooms, grilled oysters, CRB wraps. Mushrooms need some salt, the oysters were delicious--honestly, I don't think any of the restaurants in this area could go wrong with oysters! Micheladas were lacking a little kick--I like a little hot and spicy overall decent service--although it didn't look like much sanitizing was going on between customers-- okay bar bites, but definitely a must stop to the area! read more

My wife and I had a great stop here on a date day. It was sunny and we sat outside which was very nice. The downside to that.....smoking outside in the fenced eating area, the oyster shooters were excellent and the drinks were impressive and strong like I like them! Our waitress, we felt, needed a hug tho. She was not over friendly or even happy. That was a downer. But we will definitely hit this spot for another date day. read more

If you need an excuse to get away some sunny afternoon, the Longhorn Saloon & Grill is the perfect destination. Just cruise on down Chuckanut Drive but don't pay any attention to those other places along the way like the Oyster Bar... you can go back there some other time. The Longhorn is the place if you like fresh oysters, awesome burgers, a great selection of beer and the best hot wings in the Pacific Northwest... hands down. A funky little locals place in an even funkier small town with lot's of character and chock full of characters. Don't worry about the line up of Harleys in front when you get there... they're there for the same reason you're going... great food and drinks! read more

Oysters fresh from the bay, A Cajun seafood stew to die for and the prettiest waitresses in the Valley. OK... Admittedly the last point isn't saying much, but its true. The Longhorn is Harley friendly, but I don't consider it a biker bar. There is outdoor dining on the (ahem) water and they've got a well-stocked bar. Beers on tap include Boundary Bay IPA... no need to go on. Fish Tacos on Tuesday night are legit. Sunday night they have great live music and Friday and Saturday are your standard fun party nights. read more

The Longhorn isn't that great. The outdoor patio in the back is okay on a sunny day, but the inside of the bar is drab and beat up. They never have music playing so there's not much atmosphere. The food used to be better with the former owner. The last couple of times we've eaten there the food's been uninspired and not fresh. We had to send back an oyster burger because the grilled oysters were off. The waitress didn't seem too surprised either, so we probably weren't the first to complain. The only direct competition with the Old Edison Inn which is just down the street. I've had a couple decent steak dinners here and one very awesome dessert. Wish I could remember the cook's name who was working when I was there. He was FABULOUS and had that kitchen extremely efficient on a very very busy night. When there's a band playing I can't eat here, the volume is on the hostile side of outrageous IMO. The outdoor seating is adjacent to Indian Slough and pleasant views in good weather. read more

Stopped by the Longhorn Saloon and Grill because I love the University of Texas Longhorns! NOT! Okay, I actually needed to use their restroom on the way towards Bellingham on Chuckanut Dr. So I noticed they had oyster shooters for $1 during their Happy Hour. $1 for an oyster?! Sign me up! The oyster was pretty big and fresh from Samish Bay. The cook / manager and bartender were very friendly. Next time I'll have to try their burgers. read more

This is a very cool bar, a bit on the rough side (for someone who doesn't feel comfortable in rough bars). Edison is a tiny town with a suprisingly high percentage of cool places to stop, and The Longhorn Saloon & Grill is one of them. I ride in a Scooter Gang and we've stopped here more than once. Oysters are popular here (as are other appetizers) and folks I came here with, seemed to enjoy theirs. One name I found online of the Longhorn included "& Oyster Bar". So if you're an oyster fan, this is a place to check out. The bar itself, is all bar. Like bars I remember from years ago. Good greasy and guilty appetizers are plentiful on this menu. Solid spot for good bar food. I had the Walla Walla burger, which had a pile of very thin sliced grilled onions that were quite good. I also went for the onion rings, which are beer battered and again, very good. Hubby had 2 lbs of wings (!!) and said the Thai BBQ were the winners (vs the medium buffalo). Service was prompt and efficient, the place was pretty empty when we arrived but started filling up fast as the lunch hour progressed. Obviously a popular spot! They had some great sounding specials that day (a Thursday) including Hawaiian BBQ pork sliders, hand battered coconut prawns, and another I forget. The Longhorn is a nice, clean, friendly place with really good food and a variety of brews on tap. Great place for a pint and a fe rounds of trivia while enjoying wings and a sandwich. Not too noisy, not too crowded, hardly ever a sasquatch sighting. read more

Mediocre. Was seated for a good five minutes before our waitress came with menus. People seated after us were accommodated before we were. Not her fault as she was bartender/waitress. We ordered the same time as a party of seven sitting next to us and they were served and ate before our food came out (two of us). Wings came out early but food was at least 30 minutes after. Good wings. My steak was medium but charred on the outside. All I could taste was the char. The onion rings tasted like they had been under a heating lamp for a while. Food was sent back and I NEVER do that. Was so looking forward to the food because of all the great reviews. Not sure I will drive all the way again. So disappointed. read more

Seeing as how I live right down the road, this is a spot I come to quite often. Food is always great. I love their oysters!!!! And the chowder is to die for. We came from out of town on a holiday Sunday. The server was super friendly and attentive. We had the wings which were as amazing as they say. The medium had just a hint of spicy. and the oyster shooters were fresh and delish. Live music and the fact they allow dogs on the patio makes this place a 5 for sure. read more

The "hot" wings were perfect snack before another holiday dinner. With the pound of wings and a basket of carrots, I went though 3 little tubs of ranch not lovely. Our bartender was new to the area and had only worked their for a few months but she was a sweetheart and super welcoming. I guess this is THE local's place and I love the atmosphere. Perfect place to relax after a day of duck hunting. If you are visiting the area, you should definately stop in. My Jack and Cokes were lovely, all three or so of them. I've gone back and forth on whether or not to review the Longhorn. I thought it might help someone if I did or even prompt the restuarant to make some changes. I think my prawns were undercooked because my stomach turned after eating. Also, my boyfriend's steak was flavorless. The strange thing too is that EVERYTHING was covered with dill. Bizarre. The server was snotty at best. My bf asked what drinks were available. She said, "We have a full bar, so we can pretty much make anything you want." She then proceeded to walk away without taking his drink order. She returned 10m later. He ordered a drink. It was SO strong he couldn't even drink it. When it came time to pay, I gave him a 20 dollar bill. I couldn't let him pay for all that bad food. He told the server to use the 20 and put the rest on his card. She brought back the bill with having charged the card for everything and thanked him graciously for the 20. It wasn't for her. She hardly deserved a tip after the horrible and rude service she delivered. He was trying to joke with her and she said, "I'm allergic to assholes." Never again will we return. This place is a cross between a truck stop restroom / soup kitchen. Their deep fried food is to die for, literally! Places like this take all the guessing on why people in the valley are so fit. You get a one star for having cold beer. I know this place is supposed to be a little trailer trashy, and I love good heart attack fare. But this place is in one of the best areas in the world for fresh seafood. What do they do, deep fry and bread the hell out of everything. This place was bought by new owners about 6 months ago. I've been in twice since, and both times had horrible service. The first time the waitress took the plate away mid-bite, fork in my dad's mouth and food still on the plate. Super rude, weird and stupid. The next time we had to wait to order while the same waitress leaned on the bar eating food, ignoring us. When we finally ordered and got our mozzarella sticks, they were still frozen in the middle... waitress never came back. We left enough to cover the bill, and got out. Seriously don't go here. Well, I used to give this place five stars for food, service and atmosphere... Not anymore, new owner as of December 2017 who told us nothing was going to change, but now the burgers suck, tiny, disfigured, no flavor, charred in the outside and raw in the middle, not the same bun (cheap) shoestring (cheap) fries. I told everyone to go here for the BEST burger around, now I have to tell them the exact opposite. He got rid of taco Tuesday (stupid) then brought it back because of complaints. Not the same, tacos were gross and no chicken, only option 3 for $10. I do NOT want 3 tacos, and I want chicken as an option. Also got rid of Thursday night ribs, which we came down for ALL the time, 4 miles from my house. Frequented multiple times since new ownership, not going back, have to find a new happy hour and dinner place, very disappointed. Plenty more I could complain about, but I've said enough. read more

I stopped for lunch on Tuesday. The waitress was extremely pleasant and competent. I ordered a dozen oysters and an order of onion rings. These came extremely quickly and both were excellent. They did a very good job of remodeling the café. These were the best oysters I've had in quite a while. Had the oysters again today 11 25 19. They were just as good as when I first posted. read more
