We came here on our first day at Martha's Vineyard and liked it enough to order takeout for a beach lunch on my birthday. There's no kids menu, so we ordered a couple of entrées for the kids to share. The place was busy both times, but service was quick and efficient. The lobster roll was packed with meat. The service was super friendly and they were incredibly sweet to our dog. I hear the lobster rolls are all the rave, but I don't eat sea food. One of the best views on the boneyard for lunch! Logistics: beautiful view, a short walk from the Oak Bluff Ferry. They do not take reservations, and it's always bustling so be prepared to wait. The best view however is on the upper deck, with like a bar seating area facing the water. This is first come first serve! So you can join the waitlist for a table but even better to stalk out this stool seating! Food & Drinks: loved the fish tacos and fries! I tried the Mahi Mahi taco first and it was very tough. Unfortunately when I told the waiter she stated, "Have you ever had Mahi?" Um yes and I love it. And know this is overdone! Even if I hadn't, that's not the response if a customer does not enjoy their food. It was an early lunch so I wanted more than a mimosa, but still light and airy cocktail! I had lobster roll on my mind and after doing some research I knew that this was going to be the spot for it. It was an hour long wait checking in around 1-1:30pm on a Friday. Worth it tho! I had the sautéed lobster roll with lots of butter and house made chips. It was HUGE. I felt like I ate two lobsters. Great flavor - it was exactly what I was looking for. My wife got the sushi and tbh I think it was overpriced for what it was. She wasn't a fan of what seemed to be mayo based sauce on top of the mango roll. I wasn't a fan of this restaurant -- made my stomach hurt after eating the lobster roll. Ultimately, TMI it got regurgitated. It was fine at first, but was nothing extravagant about their lobster roll. I could have did without the chips, tasted stale. The lobster roll needed a sauce or something with it and lobster pieces were full and chunky that's a pro. I would give it a 7/10, if I'm being honest really a 6.5/7-10. The service was okay. I had to assist the hostess on how to use the POS system when we picked up our order because she didn't know how to use the POS system fully. Ambiance was busy, so I know their food must be good but wasn't right for me I'd say. I probably would try something else on their menu but would stay clear of their lobster rolls. read more

Great food and an amazing location. Fish sandwich with sweet potato fries is delicious; lightly battered fish served with lettuce, tomato, onion, and pickle. The lobster roll had a lot of lobster but there was only butter, so the roll was a little bland. The beyond burger was not really good, as it was cooked well done and didn't have much flavor so I could barely finish half of it. I had to ask for condiments, which was strange that even though our table had a few orders of fries, there was no ketchup. The place was busy so our server was not super attentive. Cooked to perfection and melted in your mouth. The burger was less than desired. The cook was okay, asked for medium and got a little closer to well, the burger patty its self was under seasoned. The burger could've used a sauce or something to really bring it all together. My normal fries were excellent, but the hubbies sweet potato were under cooked. First time that we've been to Lookout Tavern as a family, although two of us have been before. Things to know: it's always busy, it's always loud, and there's always a wait. Service will never be more than "What do you want?" and "Here you go" because they are all so slammed every second. But, we like this place and the view is indeed phenomenal. It has its own charm and the food that we got last week was actually much better than we've had in the past. We were a party of seven, and had about a 30 minute wait, which wasn't too bad. The two of us shared the lobster roll BLT and the cold lobster roll. The BLT version was so good, especially since that was our first time ever having that particulate combination. It was delicious. We like that they don't overload the lobster with mayo and the amount of meat was generous (obvs the price reflects that). Same with the lobster roll--positively heaping, although for one of us, the lobster meat on that one didn't taste as good. We know that makes no sense but still! The sweet potatoes fries are fine but their slaw tasted like it had turned. Our daughter ordered a fish and chips that unfortunately had a rubbery coating that seemed like a pretty egregious cooking faux pas. This is really more of a 3.5 star experience, but drinking aperol spritzes and beer with our friends and Pops by the water on a beautiful day makes us want to round up, so there you go. Also, we were generously treated to dinner, which always helps too. Four stars. read more

Visiting Martha's Vineyards in the offseason, was not expecting lot of places open, but we saw a lot of positive reviews of Lookout Tavern and decided to check it out. Service was prompt, and accommodating, and the place looked reasonably busy for a Tuesday afternoon in October. Lobster roll was hugee and for a price of 40 dollars, you get a lot for your money - not too much mayo, plenty of lobster and tasted fresh. Chips served with lobster roll were hard, wasn't a fan of them. Aperol spritz was good too, and the calamari as an appetizer as well. Great spot to check out in Oak Bluffs! We are full-time Islanders and one of our saddest days is New Year's Day. That's when the Lookout closes for their winter break and they reopen sometime in April. We frequent that restaurant on a weekly basis because the food is fabulous. The servers are wonderful and the atmosphere is perfect. This is sort of a "touristy" spot, because of the location, but it actually has very good food and pleasant service. If there are 2 or 3 of you, I'd suggest trying to get a seat along the edge of the dining room. You will truly be "looking out" at the ocean and Oak Bluffs ferry. It's beautiful on a nice day. The serving sizes are very big. Fish and chips comes with 2 large pieces of fish, and lots of fries. My husband loves their chicken salad sandwich, on grilled thick bread with chicken, cranberries and walnuts. He usually can only eat half, and has the other half for lunch the next day. It comes with homemade chips, but you can upgrade to fries for a small price. Their salads are also very large. The Cobb came with a lot of blue cheese and bacon, and was crisp & fresh. They also have a good sushi menu. Definitely recommend the "Mary and the Boys" which is a Bloody Mary with 2 big shrimp. I don't think they take reservations, so it's harder to get a group in, although there are more tables on the ground floor which lacks the "lookout" view. read more

Views from every seat as the venue sits high on the bluff. I have been here before and it was always good. Food selection and quality were top notch. Today was different - I got the packed Lobster Roll and it was great. The color and quality of the lobster. The freshness and preparation off the charts. I can't say I am a huge Lobster guy. I had seen this ordered before, never indulged. But my son had it and spoke so highly about it I decided to splurge. He was right. So right. Lobster roll rocks. Warning. Perhaps the worst lobster roll I've ever had. The warm buttered lobster roll was a first. Always had the cold, mayo version, here and many other places. And that version at the Lookout was always terrific. Not so the buttered version the other night. A light coating of butter, which provided little taste, under which revealed dried out and tasteless pieces off lobster. Accompanied by home made chips, which tasted like cardboard. Awful. And the $40 appetizer portion of fried belly clams were so chewy that they were mostly inedible. The Caesar salad was plentiful and well dressed - but, come on - we didn't come to the Lookout for salad. The seafood was dreadful. Best buttered lobster roll ever! When we are on the island, we happily stop in the lookout for one at least 2xs or more a visit.

My friend Pauly from Falmouth, MA said if we are going to martha's Vineyard we had to try the Lookout Tavern. He said the view was amazing. We had tried many places up and down the harbor, but we had never been to the tavern on the other side of the street overlooking the ocean. It's a beautiful view and on top of the view the food was absolutely amazing. They have one best sushi and best lobster roll since 2012 every year. But once I saw the chicken salad with fresh cranberries and walnuts, I had to have it. There were six of us, we all got something different and everything was delicious. Make sure you look at the photos. I myself enjoyed all the different flavors that were inside of the chicken salad sandwich. It came with homemade fries and they were also delicious. I never thought smiling was a big deal. When we walked in, we were happy and smiling and said hello. I guess you just feel like the person you're talking to should also say hello and smile. I'm not saying they have to. I'm just saying it definitely turned the experience to the negative until we ordered. I know everybody has things on their mind, but sometimes just feeling welcome at a place makes the experience that much better. That would be the only feedback I have to the owner, "is your weight staff happy?" Because if they're not, it's definitely transferring to the customer.
