TLDR: Los Bagels taught me how to love. Came here on a little stay in Arcata, just wanted a little bagel after a hike. There were a lot of options. And all of them looked great but mostly the Cucumban and the Thai. Choosing was painful. My heart broke but commitment felt necessary. Sometimes it just be like that. Is there such a thing as too much cream cheese? These are the best bagels in California, whether in Eureka or Arcata. Both locations are friendly, warm places to enjoy a cup of coffee and a bagel. This was our first time coming to Los Bagels and it was recommended by one of my students who attended Humboldt. Such a fun little place to hang out with friends and have some yummy bagels and different drinks. I wish they had one of these in LA. If we are ever back in this area this will be a must stop. Staff is upbeat and positive! They have some bomb chocolate milk and Yerba Mates to go with some amazing bagels! They have a large variety and a basketball court to play ball out back. They offer some tasty coffee as well. read more

I've always liked this place, the coffee espresso is the best in town. I was a fun of their guacamole, I am not anymore. It is very expensive and less avocado than before, many fillings like onions and tomatoes that leave less room to the principal ingredient. The taste of it keeps visiting me for the rest of the day which is quite inconvenient, in particular if you have to run face to face business. The last is their gluten free bagel, so happy they have such an option, but it cost double per bagel, two dollars versus one dollar if you buy a regular one. It is disappointing to me. read more

This is one of the only bagel shops in humboldt county and they are delicious. They have a super variety to choose from along with unique bagel combinations. Their decor is fun and festive and the employees are nice. I prefer the one in eureka to Arcata because the Arcata location can get so busy. In fact that's the only real downside. Meh, still over priced, just like the one in Eureka. I honestly don't think a bagel with cream cheese should be $4. Way, way, way ridiculous. You can go to Don's Donuts and get a bagel that's just as good with cream cheese for $2. They overcharge because of their name, and how touristy the place is. If you ever find yourself in the area, make time to stop at this bakery in Arcata. They consistently produce some of the best bagels I have ever enjoyed. They are perfectly chewy and flavourful with a multitude of flavours: plain, garlic, jalapeño, whole wheat raisin, multi-cultural, multi-grain, onion, poppy seed, salt, sesame, and their popular bagel slug. What's a bagel slug, you ask? If you've been to this part of California, you might find the banana slug happily making its way through the redwoods. This particular bagel is shaped like a slug and topped with a mixture of toasted onions, garlic, sesame seeds, poppy seeds and salt. After the slugs are baked, the remaining "slime" is bottled for purchase or for free in the bakery to top your bagel or add to your soup. Do you like their strawberry or raspberry jams from Arcata's own Mad River farms? What about the Larrupin sauce? It's an addictive Swedish-style sweet mustard whose name comes from the Larrupin Café in nearby Trinidad. If you can't make it to the store but have heard good things, you can purchase this and their other jarred goods online. Go to their website and have them delivered into your hot little hands. But enough about what they sell online, what are some of my personal favourites? - Toasted sesame with cream cheese + raspberry jam. - Toasted bagel slug with cream cheese. - Toasted poppy seed with cream cheese, smoked albacore, tomato slices + Slug Slime. I'm going to give you the skinny on Los Bagels. It's just 'okay.' It's a favorite of the locals, but as someone who has lived in the area off and on for years I've never really understood the fascination with this place. Most of my experiences have been with the Eureka location but I decided to give the Arcata spot a try and that's the topic of this review. I went on a Friday morning. It was super crowded and understaffed. This normally wouldn't be a huge problem but ordering is done in a crazy disorganized fashion. The employees kinda ran around like they were totally confused the entire time. Now don't get me wrong; the food is actually pretty good. Decent quality ingredients and fresh bagels. One major problem is the prices! You could get fresh organic ingredients and make the same bagel for, in most cases, 1/4 the price they're charging! In my experience you can even go to the store, purchase all of the ingredients, go home and make the same thing in half the waiting time. The bagels are almost always partially stale too. They do get one extra star for the larrupin. It's the best sweet mustard I've had, and so I recommend just stopping in and buying some to use at home. In short, it's not worth it. There's no way a bagel with cream cheese, shaved carrots and olives should cost over $5 let alone almost $10. An Arcata classic that never disappoints. I've been coming here since I was a kid and have fond memories of the food and atmosphere. They load up the bagels with delish toppings...very generous servings and gluten free options as well. What I like about Los Bagels is the fact that they don't claim to be like something else. They make food, and they hope you like it. No "just like NY" bagels or "authentically French" croissants. They sell bagels and kwasants, both items styled after popular baked goods but made in their own unique way. If the signs invited me in for a taste of Manhattan, I might have hated this place. But because they do their own thing, I went in with an open mind and enjoyed myself. My multigrain bagel was good: a bit chewy and very fresh. That's all I really need in a breakfast bread. I was one of the Mexican employees who worked my way up at Los Bagels from prep cook starting a 6-7 a.m shifts and then became a cashier, I was let go with no warning no write ups and no suspension on a calm day where I felt my customer service was exceptionally good. I had just picked up multiple new responsibilities at the job. No reason was ever given for me being let go, and every other employee said that they were spoken to if ever their job was in jeopardy. Another Mexican girl got fired the same week for "talking back" which I never had personally witnessed and worked with her multiple times. But why did I get fired? I witnessed multiple times that managers would yell at employee and was treated extremely badly when I got sick with strep throat working here, told to come in anyways before I got antibiotics to make it not contagious, and was told it was my fault for getting sick from "pushing myself too hard" which I found extremely inappropriate. I come to this place whenever I'm in town. These bagels are too good. The first time I came I felt the price was a little high, but upon thinking about it's actually just fine. My bagel is always more pricy bc I get hella shit on it, but it's worth it forsure. They don't skimp on anything. If you get just a bagel and cream cheese it's like 3-4 bucks. And as someone who can't eat gluten I have never seen any gluten free bagel options at other shops. And packaged gluten free bagels tastes like crap. Idk what it's made out of, but I can't tell that it's gluten free. It has the nice taste wheat can give bread products. The workers are always nice and look like they enjoy their job. We got some fantastic challah bread from these people at the Arcata farmer's market. We made some badass french toast with it the next morning, and life was great! I REALLY want to like this place, because the interior is so warm and inviting, and I love bagels... but the bagels are hard and plain, they purposefully don't have any outlets to drive out people using their laptops (I always think this is super lame and bordering on aggressive).
