This was my second time eating here, once pre-covid, once now (April 2021) and it was seriously lackluster both times. The only moderately good thing about this place is the salsas, but those are just the sauce. The dishes should have their own flavor but the food was simply bland. Very bland. I was able to try 6 different dishes during my visits and none were good. I also tried the flan, which was more like jello than custard. My family and I were blown away by Taco Tuesday (many $1 tacos to choose from). The chips and salsa are very good as long as you can handle the heat! Then, they brought out 4 unique salsas for the tacos. Two of them were hotter than any restaurant salsa we've had in all of Denver and those were our favorites. The service was great too as they went out of their way to make my son's birthday special. They are open late and that's what drew us in for one more b-day meal. Can't wait to go back! read more

The food is pretty good and authentic but that server girl who is up front , i don't know if she had a bad morning or what but the customer service was terrible and she was rude to us. We ordered take out and she rudely handed it to us then walked away and we asked if she can please open our drink since we don't have a bottle opener and she took it aggressively and walked away shaking her head. She then gave it back to us with the most annoyed expression and we said thank you and she rolled her eyes and walked away without saying anything. Before we left for Denver, I scoured Yelp to look for the best al pastor places in Denver. I've been looking for something that can hold up to the awesome tacos I had in Puerto Vallarta and Los Carboncitos was mentioned several times for their al pastor tacos. They brought out free tortilla chips and salsa. The chips were nice, but some must have been stale or old because they were unpalatable. I ordered the beef tongue, shrimp and al pastor tacos. All were good, especially the beef tongue. When I asked for no vegetables on my tacos, my al pastor didn't have any pineapple which was weird. The others had pineapple. Prices weren't too bad either. If you're looking for parking, move the orange cones near the front door! They are reserved for the restaurant. They do that so the bar/club next door doesn't hog all the spots. read more

I didn't care that I had to walk by a homeless camp to get here, or that the little kid at the table next to me kept shoving his chair into the side of my leg. I'd happily endure these torments and more for any meal at Los Carboncitos. Their Al Pastor plate with their homemade corn tortillas makes my stomach rumble just thinking about it. The meat is cooked perfectly, onions just caramelized enough, peppers hold the perfect crunch and enough cheese to make it delicious but not mask the flavor of the rest of their food. Their charra beans are subtle in flavor compared to many of their dishes, but you shouldn't discount them; comforting, smoky and a little bit sweet. Their salsas are hands-down the best I've ever had in Denver. I was full to bursting with their huge portions but still found myself spooning dollops onto every tortilla or piece of meat I could get my hands on. As Doug Y. helpfully pointed out, you won't get chips to indulge in your craving for more of their salsa, since they are straight from Mexico City, so if you see a gringa slurping salsa straight from the dish, it's probably me. read more

Decided to pick my girlfriend up at her work for lunch and due to the overwhelming Yelp reviews decided to check Los Carboncitos out. It completely lives up to the hype. The salsa selection was amazing. The menu was very unique for a Mexican restaurant, they had a few items I'd never seen before such as Huercha's and Alambre's (sp?). My girlfriend tried the latter, which is basically like a mess of peppers, onions, meats, and melted cheese that you scoop onto your corn tortillas. Basically like a taco version of a Philly Cheese Steak. Delish! I went with the Torta Carboncito and two Al Pastor tacos because I was unsure how big the torta would be. Well... it was about twice as big as I was counting on... not that I'm complaining! The taco's were amazing and the pork was well marinated and seasoned. My only beef with this place is that they didn't have black beans (refried only), but that's a minor complaint at best. For a Hole-in-the-Wall Mexican Restaurant I'm really not sure how it could get much better. I'll be back! read more

Some of my favorite Mexican food in Denver. I'd read all the raving reviews, so it was on my list for some time. I finally stopped in for takeout late on a Thursday night. We brought home a taco al pastor, pechuga borracha (chicken breast with bacon, onion, and other flavors), and a huarache con bistec & nopales. Every ingredient was delicious, from the tortillas to the meat, to the sauces and salsas. The huarache was huge and topped with flavorful beans, grilled cactus, and steak that had some really good spices/marinade. So much flavor was packed into every bite here. I have to agree with the previous reviews - Los Carboncitos is as good as it gets! Sure, it's not in the best part of town, but it's cute and clean, the food was cheap, flavorful and authentic, and service was absolutely superb. The salsas were thick, rich and tasty, though wayyy too spicy for me (even the "mild" avocado-y one set my mouth on fire). Awesome chips too - crispy and fresh, and not the oily triangular dealies you get everywhere else. For entrees, I opted for the Huarache De Bistec Con Pastor ($6.95). I'm not the world's biggest corn tortilla fan, and I found it a little too strong-tasting, but it was soft, fluffy and obviously homemade. The steak and pork was tender and bursting with flavor. It was a shame that my first mouthful was a little gristly - kinda put a bit of a dampener on the rest of the meal. He chose the Super Carbonera ($13.95), a super delicious mixture of steak, pork, ham, chorizo, bell pepper and onion, topped with cheese. The accompanying flour tortillas were phenomenal. I rarely order dessert but I was in the mood for flan ($3.25). I really enjoyed it - rich and creamy, and not too sweet. I would absolutely recommend LC to anyone! read more

Authentic Mexican food (at least as far as this white girl knows). The food here is delicious. We tried a few things and liked them all. The house margs were really good. My only complaint would be that all the salsas and sauces they bring to the table are on the spicier end. I guess I don't have much tolerance for that kind of thing (did you read the first line in this review?!) The service was incredibly prompt too. The only thing that confused us was where to pay. We ended up going to the counter after a while because we never got the check. This place is so easy to miss. My husband and I have been to the Mexican grocery store in this strip mall and only saw the pot shop next door (excitedly mistook it for a coffee shop). So I've literally gone to the back of the strip mall, drove by, and still didn't notice it. Only found it by the Yelp reviews. So keep you're eye out for it! Definitely plan on going back. MORE TACOS! Can't Stop, Won't Stop! This is DEFINITELY a hole in the wall, I went alone at night, and had to fight my way past bikers in the parking lot with their boom boom music going and their leather chaps a'flapping. I'm SO not kidding!! But it is SO worth it! Based on you lovely Yelpers' photographs, I could not resist trying their Enchiladas Mole. And I'm SO glad I got them! And if you've been reading my Yelps lately, you know that I am on a Taco Kick. So of course I had to try some. I ordered an Al Pastor and a Chorizo up front, and as soon as I sat down to wait for my food (I ordered ToGo this time) I saw that they had Lengua. WELL BRING ME ONNA THOSE TOO!! I scarfed that one down in 20 seconds while waiting for my order. Again with the awesome Green Salsa!! At Los Carboncitos, you'll get 4 house salsas. Verde with jalapeño and cilantro (Similar to a chimichurri), Avocado Verde, smoky orange and holy hella hot red. They're all solid. As were the rest of the tacos, and the Al Pastor had my requisite Pineapple, so yay! Everyone was very friendly, and I even teased the cashier because she said she had never tried Lengua. I told her next time I'm there, she better have tried it!! So when y'all go in, make sure to ask if she's tried Lengua yet!! I went here based on other yelp reviews. I was not disappointed. Our party also had an order of the queso fundido and it was bomb. My daughter had a carbonsitos torta, which has pork, steak, cheese and chorizo. It was tasty and although it had alot of meat it was juicy. Holy Tacos man! What an amazing gem to find in Colorado. I thought you only get Mexican food like this in Southern California, I'm glad this is not the case. I was delighted by the authenticity and great flavors this place creates, all with friendly service. Sure, you may feel weird going to this sketch strip-mall, but I say it just adds to the authenticity. Tonight I was impressed with everything. For an appetizer I had the sopa "azteca". It's a delicious homemade concoction and the best part is that the thick tortilla strips stay crunchy for a good bit while eating it . I thoroughly enjoyed the tacos al pastor (marinated pork) and pollo. The 4 different salsas they offer were great additions. I must be a spice fiend because I tried all of them and am proud to have handled them. The perfect amount of heat to make the tacos great. What I really adore are the finely chopped onions and the generous amount of cilantro each taco has. So simple and so satisfying. I shared the huarache mar y tierra with the bf. I liken it to a sort of Mexican pizza. The toppings of shrimp, steak, and bacon lay upon a grilled thick and long corn tortilla with a bean spread. So delicious. I found this place on yelp and went based on the reviews and I was not disappointed. The dipping salsa is amazing, and the other salsas they bring out were great! The darker green (I'm assuming is a jalapeño tomatillo or something) and the orange were my favorite. I got a smothered steak fajita burrito and my friend got the Chile rellenos. She ate all of hers and said they were great and I'm looking forward to my leftover burrito later. Service is a little slow, but it was worth it for the amazing food. They had a mariachi band playing while we ate and although it was kinda loud, it made the ambiance really fun. Best carnitas I've ever had, hands down. It was tender and crisped to perfection. It literally blew my mind, because up until now, I've only ever had the slow cooked carnitas. These were to die for. I had a lightbulb moment - "so that's what they're supposed to taste like!" And those salsas - they all had a varying levels of depth and kick to them, nothing bland around here! We have been going to Los Carboncitos for like four or five years have always had really great results until the last visit----the food was terrible The meat tasted different no spice no flavor to it. We had the usual tacos that we always have and they just weren't the same. The pastor meat had a weird consistency. I don't know if they've changed the cook it seemed that the waiters were all different. The parking lot was in horrible condition. When we went to pay the bill they put the tip on the bill without asking us! They just automatically put the tip on the bill, in our case when we had left our money on the table . The place is pretty large inside and appears ready to double as a disco in the evenings. Anyway, we were here for the food not the nightlife it was promising. An assortment of 4 salsas with freshly fried chips was brought to table as soon as we were seated. The salsas were nice and flavorful with plenty of kick! I tried a combination of tacos and hubby ordered a burrito. My tacos were delicious and I loved the fresh cojita cheese sprinkled liberally on top!!! My husband enjoyed the beef and bean smothered burrito and claimed it was one of the best he had tried around town.
