Tostada Compuesta
Heather C.

I always come to Los Cuates with hope this time will be amazing and it leaves me feeling meh. The servers are always kind even if the service can be slow, the restaurant is clean and welcoming and I do really enjoy their chips and salsa. But the food is just ok. There's nothing bad about it but it just never leaves an impression or wows me. I got the Tostada compuesta and the size was super generous. The red was flavorful but the green chile lacked spice. There was a little square of unmelted cheese on the top which I found a little funny. After giving it shot after shot I can confidently say I dont like their margaritas. Im not sure if its the alcohol used or the syrups but something about the flavor is always off putting no matter what I order (today was prickly pear). I only ever come here when the person I am eating with chooses it but I always leave feeling very meh about it. I went with my parents today and they loved it so maybe its a personal taste.

Good New Mexican food. Close and convenient for me to enjoy lunch or dinner. I bring team members here for lunch as well. Nice, clean restaurant but not much in character. Service is always great and staff friendly. Salsa has a slight sweetness to it but still tasty. I do enjoy the chili rellenos here.

We arrived 45 minutes before closing time after doing the evening balloon fiesta and we were treated with excellent service. Received and provided with table, served in a timely manner, explained specials and their crowd favorites without rushing m. He explained it like it's in the middle of the afternoon considering that they will be closing soon. We were hungry so, I didn't get a chance to take photos but the food was great but kudos to the service staff.

Green chili Chicken Enchiladas

Ordered green chile chicken enchiladas and it gave me horrific food poisoning. Not to mention im pregnant and food poisoning is dangerous to the baby. Employees were OK I suppose. The ambience is nice, but I will not be returning here. The only thing I will purchase from this restaurant is their salsa.

Once again, I am at another New Mexican restaurant while visiting Albuquerque. I truly miss New Mexico food and living in northern Nevada. We have no new Mexican food places unless I cook it so I decided to try an old favorite spot this the restaurant was very nice and clean I ordered again stuff sopapilla Christmas style. When the food came out it was fresh the chile, both red and green were very flavorful and a little spicy, but not overwhelming at all had excellent flavor. The rice was OK. The refried beans were standard refried beans. Nothing to write home about the chips and salsa were very different. I felt that the salsa had a very sweet taste to it, which I was not a fan of the queso came in a little to tostada bowl, which was nice because less waste. The queso was good that had a little bit of a kick to it. Ordered a standard house Margaritaon the rocks with salt also very good overall decent effort. I probably wouldn't wanna go back to Los Cuates while I'm here, but if I come back through and I happen to pass by, I may give it another chance.

The first basket of chips and salsa were so tasty. The 2nd basket the chips tasted weird. Not like old oil just weird. The stuffed sopapilla portion is so small now. It was good though. The beans were amazing but also small portioned. Our waitress totally botched one of my friend's order. No offer to give a discount or real apology. As we were walking out the gentleman whom I assume was the manager didn't even acknowledge us or ask how our experience was. There are for too many better places to eat for as much money or less so I won't be returning to this location.

End of the week, work is done so time to hit up happy hour. I was greeted as soon as I walked in. I was seated, had a menu, brought water and chips with salsa in less than 5 minutes. It is nice and quiet here, thank you. Good place to just get away for some food. You can see the mountains from the windows and the fresh snow. The staff checks on you and makes sure you have what you need and that the food meets my expectations. Was in the mood for enchiladas on blue corn. Ground beef and egg over easy! Oh and RED!! Came with rice and beans. Like that it is correct amount of chili. Some places put so much chili you can't taste the food. Chili is not hot on heat scale mild but has a sweet taste to it you don't get anywhere else. I thought the serving size was just right but turns out I could not finish it all. They play music, Mariachi, I think that's the name. You can hear the music from any location and it is great! I think just come to listen and eat would be great! I had a great experience here. I will be back as the atmosphere is great, staff are attentive, food hits the spot.

Great food! Wish the salsa came in a bigger bowl - it disappears quickly! Always popular with locals

The food was not that good. The salsa was nasty and tasted a bit like catsup! Nothing impressive here.

My wife and I recently went to Cocina Azul for a weekend dinner and had a great experience. Even…read morethough we came without a reservation and the restaurant was busy, we were able to get a table in under 10 minutes. Our service was outstanding-food came out quickly and our server quickly and easily was able to accommodate some minor modifications to our dishes. We started our dinner by sharing the guacamole salad, chips, salsa verde, and salsa rojo. The guacamole was rich, fresh, and creamy, and the chips were warm, crispy, with the right amount of salt. The salsa verde was delicious; the salsa rojo was OK. I got the sample platter for my main dish; I particularly liked the brisket taco. I highly recommend going to Cocina Azul if you are in Albuquerque!

We ordered the green chile stew, fish tacos, green/red wet burrito with steak and taco salad with steak. They accidentally brought shrimp tacos instead of the fish, so we got to try those too. Everything was decent. - Green chile stew: good flavor. A little spicy for some. Liked that it was served with a tortilla. - Taco salad: got it with rice and beans. Steak was good. - Red/green wet burrito with steak: Really good flavor. Loved the combo of the sauces. Side of pozole was also delicious. - Fish tacos: the fish was nice and crispy, but I didn't love the cremas, which in my opinion are key to a good fish taco. The papas side was delish. The beans side was a bit salty. The horchata had good flavor but seemed a bit watery. The Diet Coke was good (looks like they recently switched from Pepsi since some of the menus still said Pepsi). The seating area is large. The AC was on a little high -- we had to go to the car for jackets.

Unfortunately, my take away was that the owners, maybe managers, are new in the restaurant management space. It feels like a lot of different ideas are happening but not converging as well as they could. The general impression I got was: confusion. A few specific issues stood out: * Friendly, enthusiastic counter service, but overworked, focused on too many tasks. * Drip coffee was not ready at 10 a.m. * About a 20-minute wait at the table for coffee to brew * Huevos were nicely presented but uneven in execution (papas flavorful but a little too salty, beans bland and unseasoned) * Outdoor seating is a nice idea, but tables felt small and cramped * Heavy direct sun on outdoor tables (limited shaded seating; north side might be worth exploring) * Exterior branding does not clearly communicate that this is a restaurant - feels more like branding for tattoo parlor/vapeshop/auto detailing * Overall concept feels pulled in too many directions * Menus are difficult to read (cramped text, color choice, and font) To the owners: I really hope you make this work. I would consider bringing in a consultant re service, hiring a graphic designer to up the branding/menu game, and focus on food consistency. It may be worth looking at books on customer service and restaurant psychology such as: * Service Design: From Insight to Implementation * The Science of Shopping * the Restaurant & Bar Marketing series by Erik Shellenberger I would love to delete this review and replace it with 5 stars in the future.

Every time I go here, Lavender Cocinita goes higher in my esteem. It's solid New Mexican cooking by…read morea skilled artisan - notably tastier than most local places _even in spite of_ the fact that no animal products are used in the chile. Yes, the chiles are vegan. (So are the beans - pressure-cooked to creamy tenderness.) Yes, they're delicious - both the red (from pods!) and the green. (And, yes, it's me - noted grumpy traditionalist who usually wants an extra scoop of bacon grease in pretty much every dish - who's writing that.) The room is small, but well thought-out. There are nice little two-top tables outside along the sidewalk/patio in this pleasant part of Los Ranchos de Albuquerque. Lavender Cocinita is popular, with a steady stream of folks coming in - but I've never had a problem getting seated and I've never felt rushed (even when sitting a while, jabbering in the chile afterglow). (Free parking is plentiful in the area, but a little weird in the Los Ranchos pedestrian area: your best bet might be trying for street parking on Tyler Road, the E/W street just N of the restaurant.) The chef is friendly and will answer questions. The counter folks have always been friendly and kind: checking on us periodically. Really nice folks. It's an order-at-the-counter/pay/take-a-seat/they-bring-it-to-you place, but the service is good enough that you'll kick yourself if you don't tip heavier than usual for such an arrangement. Get your own water at the counter. Food is cooked to order (perfectly in all my visits thus far) and will take a few minutes to get to your table, but you'll be happy. Portions are always large (I leave full, and I'm a big eater) and the cost is on the low edge of today's pricing. The chiles are real-deal: they tend to be notably more piquant than at most places in town but they're real chile and vary in heat with the batch being served (I am used to and appreciate heat and one time the green was HOT!). As noted, the flavors are just wonderful. Bear in mind, NM red and green chiles are relatively simple sauces with few components: the artistry of the chef and the quality of the ingredients are absolutely vital to the flavor impact of the finished product served - and Lavender Cocinita absolutely nails this. Foodies have written the place up over and over, and they've won awards that would impress folks in the know in the short time (less than two years) they've been open. Without being melodramatic, this place gives a serious-about-the-flavors vibe that reminds me of those noted in places that have won James Beard American Classic awards. Lavender Cocinita is a reasonably inconvenient drive for me, but every time I've made it I've driven back with a grin and a vow to do it again soon.
