Unfortunately, had to take a star off because upon arrival was told I needed to go inside to get the order. I don't live in Albuquerque anymore, but I have been here a few times on recent visits. I used to like this restaurant, but it is just not very good anymore. First, the food quality has declined. It is salty. I ordered a combo stuffed sopaipilla and it was almost not edible from being so salty. Second, the pricing is too high and just plain messed up. Like I was afraid my chile might be too hot for me, so I ordered a side of sour cream. They charged me $1.50! A tiny side of sour cream in a little plastic condiment container should not be more than $.75. I order a side of sour cream all the time in Mexican restaurants in New Mexico, California, and Nevada. No one charges $1.50. Come on, Los Cuates! It also seemed like the price of a menu item used to be a clear price. Now it is like an enchillada plate with only cheese is $10.50, and add $3 if you want this meat or that meat, or more if you want a meat like a grilled meat. Pretty soon you are paying $14 for an enchilada plate with beans and rice. It is not a fine dining atmosphere. Mexican food isn't costly to prepare or to purchase ingredients for. It should be priced accordingly. Don't think your customers are too stupid to do math and won't realize how much they are paying by pricing it where you add-on various things. Customers might realize when they are ordering, but when they look at the bill at the end of the meal, they will likely realize they overpaid for food that just wasn't very good. read more

We've been going here for years now. Over time service has gone downhill but today it hit rock bottom. Our waitress only visited our table 3 times (take order, bring food, give check). 3 waitresses worked our dining room and it was only half full. There's no excuse for our waitress to ignore us like that. Los Cuates as always been really good about keeping drinks full and bringing chips. They even have staff whose only job is to refill chips and drinks. These people walked by our table at least 4 times, saw that we needed refills and simply ignored our empty glasses. Took my lady out for dinner and a Margarita. The food was ok. Her plate was the steak and enchiladas. Enchiladas were great but the steak tasted like an old piece of meat ...very chewy and quiet frankly we would never order that again. My plate was a combination enchiladas ribs and taco. Taco was dry enchiladas did not have enough sauce and the ribs were old. This is my second time going and it's probably going to be a while until I decide whether I go there again or not. I come down to NM to eat Good food and try to new restaurants. I come here and find out right away that this restaurants slacks on having good food to eat. I got carne y papas burrito and I thought it would come with Potatoes and the burrito to come with carne adovada or carne asada.... no it comes with just beef and they charge you if you substitute it for carne. So I got charged, plus they gave me refried beans instead of the potatoes and the tortilla for the burrito was cold. The waitress kinda gave me a bad vibe, I get it's the holidays and your working but there's no reason to be an ass if you live off tips. I'm disappointed overall!!! Hope this helps y'all. read more

To give this establishment 1 star is saying a lot. This is a time I wish we were able to give negative stars! Anyway, after waiting to be seated for a couple of minutes, our server asked us for our drink order. We asked her what kind of specialty drinks hey had to which she simply stated "margaritas". The salsa that came with our chips was absolutely terrible. It was a bit sweet, as if tamarind had been added. Anyway, I am some sort of a salsa connoisseur and could not stomach this stuff. I ordered the seafood enchiladas with veggies. As you can see by the picture, the veggies are sad. There was barely any seasoning on them, and they were very bland. The enchiladas were disgusting to say the least. I had 3 bites just to be sure, and yup, they were awful. My boyfriend, who has a completely different palate as me thought they were just as bad. My boyfriend finished his dish, which was okay at best. I asked the server to take my dish as I was done. She asked what was wrong and I explained how terrible the food was. She asked if I wanted anything else, but after the terrible service, crappy salsa, and tasting my boyfriend's meal, I had had enough. I get knots in my throat just driving by this place. Just not what it used to be. Since I'm from alb, one of the first things I always do is go to Los cuates. Over the years, since they've grown the business, the food has become over priced, reduced portions, and simply not as tasty as it used to be. Case in point, today ordered a Carne adovada burrito, which used to be filled with multiple big chunks of tasty spicy carne. The one today literally only had 3 or 4 small chucks of meat, the rest was shredded and falling apart. It was more tortilla than burrito. My Wife's cheese enchalida wasn't melted. This is on par with my last several visits. The only item that is still as good as it used to be is the red sauce with the chips (still the best in the world!). From what I can tell, that's the only thing that has any resemblence to the old Los cuates/silvianos. Another annoying change is there is no lunch menu on the weekends, like there used to be. Now you have to pay $4 more for the same plate... Real shame, my dad first went to silvianos on Lomas in 1971. I went there as a 3 year old in 1976. Went there every Saturday with my parents during college. As sad as it is, I just can't tell people that Los cuates is amazing any more, it's just ordinary... read more

Not sure what happened to this location (I heard there was a change in management) but went to dinner there recently and was very disappointed. The place was almost empty at peak dinner time. The chips were so stale we couldn't eat them. The ground beef in the enchilada and taco tasted like poor quality ground beef. The waiter came by to tell us he was bringing our sopapillas and then came back with our check and no sopapillas. We were only one of two families in the entire restaurant so it's not like he was busy. read more

Delicious, authentic, cheap Mexican food. The chips are always warm and delectable. Not to mention, the food comes lightning fast and the service has always been awesome. I take every visitor from anywhere to Los Cuates to eat because it's really my favorite Mexican restaurant in ABQ, and that's saying allot because there is allot of competition when it comes to cheap Mexican food here. Food, meh. Server competent. I ordered the 2 cheese enchilada plate. The beans were pureed & had a dry skin on them like they had spent some time on the pass. The cheese was found under the lettuce & tomatoes piled on top of every thing. My enchiladas had the Christmas sauce passed sideways over them rather down the length. My son ordered the special, steak, enchiladas & potatoes. He ate about one third of the steak, all the enchiladas & a bite or two of the potatoes. He declined a take out container. My cousin is from out of town, and has been working in Albuquerque for the movie industry for the past couple of months. He wanted to take me out for dinner, and I suggested Los Cuates. The Los Cuates on Menaul is closest to my house. We came in, and asked how long the wait was. The young girl at the door said it's about a 30 min wait. So my cousin asked her if we could sit in the bar area, and she said no, it's only for people who are drinking. There were two people sitting at the bar cutting into their enchiladas. So then about twenty min later a couple come walking in, and asked how long is the wait and then asked if they could sit at the bar. They walked into the bar, and the bartender hands them two menus. I got up and asked the young lady, I thought you said only people who are drinking can sit in there? She didn't say anything and ignored me. So I watched the restaurant manager walking around and kept staring at me with a mocking smile. When we finally got seated, I ordered their fiesta salsa, because I can't eat the regular salsa that they serve. That manager comes over, and asks me in a mocking tone, is there some food allergy that we need to know about? I'm very disappointed with the service we got, and the way that we were treated. I'm embarrassed that I suggested to eat there. I have been eating at Los Cuates and giving them my business for over thirty years. I know this particular location hasn't been here that long, but even when it was a hole in the wall cafe off of Lomas, their service was far better than what my cousin and I experienced tonight. If the owners of this place Dennis Carpenter and Larry Gutierrez were smart, they would get themselves a new restaurant manager that is professional and get rid of the girl at the door taking your name. Not great, not bad...average NM food. As others have mentioned, the salsa is unique...very thick, fairly sweet, but quite spicy. I had the carne adovada burrito with green chili, which was good, but really nothing special. I sat at the bar and the bartender was very attentive and the service was quick. A minor complaint...there are no TVs to watch while sitting at the bar. In the bar area the TVs are against the walls, but they are to your back while sitting at the bar. I eat at bars while on travel, and I like to have sports to watch while eating. Overall, I'd try other places before going back, but it's not like I'd avoid this place. . read more

We've been going to Los Cuates for years and our favorite location had been the little "hole in the wall" on Lomas. The location on Menaul is the one we go to now most often. Food is consistently good. I'm a big fan of their chiles rellenos, which I think are some of the best in town. My husband thinks that Los Cuates has the best red in the city, hands down. I'm a bigger fan of green, myself, which is also good. The house margarita is a good deal if you're in the mood for a drink. If you want something non-alcoholic, they keep the iced tea coming. Anyway, when I think of Mexican food and Albuquerque, there are two or three restaurants that always come to mind as being standouts. This is one of those restaurants. read more

i am so sad to be posting this bad review of a place I used to love. I've now had 3 bad experiences though. First time was when the potatoes in the green chile stew were rock hard. Second time the sopapillas were horribly greasy (and they served them anyway). The last time was the worst... I ordered flat blue corn enchiladas with red sauce and an egg. What I got was a bread-sized plate with two greasy rolled blue corn tortillas, no sign of cheese inside, no sauce, and served with a tiny plastic cup of red sauce and a tiny cup of green sauce on the side. It was awful. I called the manager over to let her know what the kitchen served, and she had a "no big deal" attitude and said "it's how a lot of people order it" as an explanation. It was so unappetizing. When they replaced it with what I ordered, it was still unacceptably greasy. I used to love this place and have been coming since they opened. Now I'm going back to the Lomas location from now on, even though this is so much closer. I can only think there has been a major change either in kitchen staff or in management. Sad... read more

The food and service were excellent today. After eating the delicious Trio appetizer I could only order off of the Senior menu. The shredded beef enchilada was delicious and flavorful. One of the people in our party had the 10 oz. Rib Eye special and he was raving about it. The House Margaritas were also very good. read more

The worst experience I've ever had. First: me and my family arrived at 6:50 we weren't asked if we wanted something to drink till 30 minutes after being sat down. We ordered the nachos grande as a appetizer we asked for steak and we received chicken the cheese was not melted. We did not receive our order till 7:58. Wow, what happened to the place that I once considered the best New Mexican Food in town? I have been a Los Cuates customer for almost 30 years and there were times when I ate there about twice a month. Over the years the frequency of my visits decreased and I noticed a drop in quality. However, I would sill eat there once in a while and bring out of town guests along. The other day I had an hour with my son and we decided to go eat at Los Cuates since it had been some time. We both had dinner combination plates and they were just bad. chicken taco was cold, rice and beans had no flavor, hardly any red and green on the plate. I have lived in Albuquerque for about 8 months now and this is my favorite New Mexican food so far! We have eaten here twice, and it is consistently good. I got the chili rellenos and they are amazing! I got it with whole beans, and the plate is smothered in cheese! I get the sides of sour cream and guac to put on top! I also love the salsa they bring out in the beginning, it has a very unique flavor! And for the price this is well worth it!! We will continue to eat here, and share this place with family when they come visit!! read more

My wife and I decided to go to Los Cuates, since we hadn't been in some time. The chips and salsa were fine. Salsa was tasty, but very spicy. I ordered the Chile Rilleno plate and my wife, the Taco plate. she asked for two chicken and one beef. The rillenos were good, with plenty of cheese and not greasy. I had the green chile on the side, but ended up pouring it on. My wife's tacos were very large and filled with lots of meat, particularly the chicken. I tasted the chicken taco and it was well-flavored. My wife didn't let me have any of the beef. The refired beans side was good, but the rice was "eh." read more

We used to enjoy Los Cuates- the food was consistently good and the service was fast. It has noticeably gone down hill as of late. The prices went way up- much higher than other New Mexican restaurants with similar food. The portions are smaller. Even the take-out hasn't been great quality with more order mistakes. The fajitas are still delicious, however, though the portion is smaller. My advice? Hit up one of the many other delicious, local New Mexican restaurants in the area! read more

We were frequent customers of the location in Edgewood (now closed), then we started going to the location on Menaul. Mind you, this was all with my husband's service dog. She wears her vest and behaves better than most adults.... Well, today was a game changer... We got to the Menaul location, and were told at 2:30 in the afternoon on a 95 degree day that we would have to sit on the patio because we had a service dog with us.... That will be the LAST TIME we will be going to Los Cuates for any reason, EVER.... That, my dear hostess, is against all ADA rules and regulations. A person with a service dog should NOT be told they are to sit outside in ANY weather conditions. They are certified for a reason. You should be aware that you could get sued for something like that... Tell the little lady sitting in the booth (with her young children) in the bar to take her chihuahua outside. The one WITHOUT the service vest, that watched us walk back out to our car when we were only given the option to sit outside. Shame on you!!! read more

YUM YUM YUM!! By far one of my favorite restaurants to have authentic New Mexican food. Let me start with the out of this world chips and salsa! Freshly made crispy tortilla chips with a very unique red salsa. The salsa is hot hot hot with a hint of BBQ sauce which makes it unlike any other salsa around! Well played los cooties! I typically always order the huevos rancheros, comes on soft corn tortillas, home fried potatoes, creamy refried beans, zesty Spanish rice all all topped with two eggs any style! I usually top that all off with Christmas style chile I can't get enough of the spicy red and the wonderfully flavored green chile!! Sop up the extra chile with their huge and fluffy Sopapillas!! I don't typically drink but I know they have wonderful margaritas it's a great restaurant, service is always prompt and polite, and little to no waiting for a table!! Boo!! I've been eating here for over 20 years and the food has always been relatively good. As of now I will never go back. Until 1 month ago an Antoinette's combo to go was just under $6 after tax. Today I ordered and it now costs over $8. Not only that the portion is smaller. To add insult to injury the to go lunch menu costs as much as the in house lunch menu and still no chips and salsa. When I brought it up with the manager... nothing no offer to even explain. This will alienate your client base Los Cuates, your food is not that good. My sugestion is go to El Patio or Sadie's both of which are now in the same price range and MUCH better. Again BOO!!! I will never go back now, and to think all it would have taken would have been for the manager to offer me $0.20 of chips and salsa just this once instead of telling me he didn't know what he could do.
