Los Dos Molinos has been one of my go-to spots for years, and it hasn't slipped once. Not once. That alone says a lot. I split time between Phoenix and Rhode Island, so every time I'm back here, this place ends up on the list. This trip, I brought the extended family along, first timers across the board. No hesitation. They got it immediately. We always start with the Machaca pizza. That's non-negotiable. It comes out hot, loaded with flavor, and just enough heat to wake you up without knocking you over. It sets the tone. You know exactly what kind of meal you're about to have. Last night I went with the Relleno Dinner with the garlic pulled pork, and it was ridiculous in the best way. Rich, smoky, layered with flavor, and yes, it brings heat. Not gimmicky heat. Not "let's see how spicy we can make this" heat. Real, intentional, built-into-the-dish kind of heat. The kind that actually belongs there. And that brings me to the complaints I keep seeing. "It's too hot." Come on. Their slogan is literally "Some Like It Hot." That's the whole point. You don't walk into a place like this expecting mild salsa and a side of bottled hot sauce. This is not that. This is bold, unapologetic, New Mexican-style cooking that doesn't water itself down for anyone. If you want toned-down, there are a hundred other places in Phoenix happy to oblige. Service has always been on point. Friendly, efficient, and comfortable. Not stiff, not rehearsed. Just people who know what they're doing and keep things moving without making it feel rushed. What I respect most is the consistency. I've worked my way through most of the menu over the years, and I've never walked out disappointed. Not once. That's rare. I expected spicy... but good lord.. even dipping my chips in the salsa was over the top, let alone put any ON the chip! I struggled to find something not flagged as "spicy" there's not a lunch menu - just the standard offerings. I settled on the soft taco combo, one chicken, one beef. Generously filled, but the liquid on the plate basically softened the tacos so much it was a fork meal. The beef was ok, but really little to no flavor. The chicken? I don't know actually, by the time I got to the second taco - it had turned into beef also. Dang. Oh well. The beans? Great soft texture, but no flavor. Same with the rice. read more

The first time I was here was Aug 2024 with two friends -- came for a brunch on a Thursday @ 11am. All I remember was that the margaritas did their job and that my friends and I thought the food was really spicy, some in a good way. Over a year and a half later, aka Jan 2026, the three of us decided to come back on a Friday @ 3:30pm. This time it felt like the margaritas were MUCHHH bigger than what they were last time (you can judge the 2024 v. 2026 pics I put), but maybe that was just us. Also, the margs were just as strong, if not stronger than what I remember, which is a good thing I guess lol! I got two street tacos that I honestly wasn't really impressed with. The meat felt a lil dry and flavorless. I don't think my friends were too crazy about their orders either, for both times we went. I've been here twice and I think the decoration, aesthetic, design are beautiful on the inside and outside. The colors in the outdoor area are pretty when the sun goes down. It also gets busier at night, I'd recommend going earlier on during happy hour for a more intimate feel if that's what you're going for. There was hardly anyone around lunchtime. Now on to the main topic: spice. I personally LOVE eating spicy foods, so the spice here was delicious. And yes I took bite after bite because it was yummy, but it was also because I wanted to delay the painful sting that I felt coming on after 3 seconds of rest (hurt so good). But you have to remember spice is literally their specialty -- this chain makes it known that they use New Mexico Chiles and are NOT subtle w the heat. I stopped by Los Dos Molinos for their Taco Twosday special and had a great time! I ordered the Taco Twosday Street Tacos with a mix of chicken and beef. We stopped into Los Dos Molinos while back in Phoenix, and after our 20-year absence, it was a complete joy to see that Los Dos is still serving up the hottest son-of-a-gun food in all of Arizona. The place continues to have that easygoing "just doing it our way" vibe you know and love it for, and it remains our favorite New Mexican chile-it-up restaurant on the planet. Clearly a lot of people feel that way, since even at an off hour in the middle of a summer afternoon, you'll find locals in there savoring the F&B. If the delicious dishes start to singe your tastebuds, don't forget to order a pitcher of the heartiest margaritas in town (or at least a flavored iced tea). Have I really never written a review for Los Dos after 20 some years of going here anytime I am in Phoenix?! For history's sake I will give them 4 stars but today was more like 3. Went for Saturday brunch for the first time. No wait. Sat right down. Service was slow and food was slow to arrive. Fortunately drinks came quick. The servers have never been super friendly here and years of being popular have certainly made the restaurant comfortable in doing things their way and customers be damned. If you love the food you just learn to roll with it. And really the food is the deal. Intense, uncompromising New Mexican food that will set your hair on fire. Some like it hot indeed. Went Saturday morning around 10:30 am they just opened at 10 am . Just a few people inside at tables . Sat down we got chips and salsa fairly quickly, but then we waited at least 20 minutes to order. We almost walked out. I had the flautas dinner the garlic pork with beans and rice. Husband had the soft tacos with the garlic pork . My dinner was burnt but ok .. they had no taste , forgot the guacamole. I ate only half of one because why waste calories on nothing good ! Both of us been burping the food all day and not good burps ! Server was terrible . Cobwebs hanging down wasn't too appealing either . Chips and salsa was the best thing . Definitely not going back . DONT RECOMMEND! I brought my kids and boyfriend to eat here after a long day. We waited forever for service and there was only 1 other table with people. Then we get our food. The steak was burnt. We kindly advised it was too hard to eat. They took it away and brought it back and said " that's how we make it" and gave it back. We ordered a tamale. It was so dry I am had to drink water to get it down my throat. Very disappointed. Still gad to buy McDonald's for my kids on the way home. One star for the ambiance and one star for the Prima Margarita. Now to the good part.. The service was horrible. Our server definitely did not want to be there that day. His "service" was limited to "what can I get you to drink?" "Scan the QR code for the menu" and "are you ready to order?". Literally. Not another word was spoken to us. He didn't even address my parents and was only speaking to me. Very strange and disrespectful behavior. He also never confirmed our order, so I was initially brought the incorrect side and had to order again. We were never brought a refill on water and had to flag someone down. No one ever checked on us to see if we were enjoying our meal, or if we needed anything else. The only time someone came back to our table was to clear the plates. The food was sub par. It's like they try to cover up the lack of flavor with making it spicy. I looove spicy, but when it lacks flavor, what's the point? I tried the chicken, ground beef, adovada, and chorizo tacos. The chicken taco was... wet. It's the only way I can describe it. The tortilla literally fell apart the moment I tried to pick it up. The ground beef had no flavor, so I treated it as a palate cleanser. The other two were just ok. The check. Going back to my incorrect side - I was brought rice when I ordered fries. Easy mistake in a loud restaurant, so this is why you confirm. But here's the thing, I should not have to pay for a side when YOU made the error. The side of rice he charged me for was $8. Soooo tell me why my mom also got a side of rice, and was only charged $4?!! How can one side be DOUBLE the price of the other - for the same thing?! So when the bill came, we told them to remove the $8 side of rice because we did not order that. We ordered fries (which we were also charged for). Can you guess what they did?! They removed the $4 side of rice instead. We did the calculation ourselves because they refused to bring us another itemized check after the correction. I wonder why... Such a bizarre experience. There are many worse injustices in the world, but chief among the lessor wrongs I'm aware of is that at the time of this writing, the original Los Dos Molinas is rated only 3.5 on Yelp. This is an insult to the integrity of Yelp's rating system. In the reviews there are complaints that the food is too spicy (yes, in fact it's very very spicy, so beware), the service can be slow sometimes (they are very popular and very busy - but my service has never been slow), the food is tasteless (are you kidding?? It's easily some of the most flavorful food I've ever eaten), and the décor is cheesy (yes it is.) If spicy food and cheesy décor is not your thing, then don't go. If you can deal with that, then visit Los Dos Molinas and you'll be in for a treat possibly unlike anything you've ever tasted. This location is basically a national landmark, located in the former ranch home of Tom Mix. If you don't know Tom Mix, he was a silent movie star - basically he was John Wayne before John Wayne was John Wayne. There is an outdoor courtyard where you can sit and drink while waiting for a table in the smallish dining room. The dining room is somewhat dark and full of kitschy décor, but this doesn't impact the quality of the food. I highly recommend beginning your meal with a bowl of green chile stew and a savory sopapilla - wow, so good. I've eaten at this restaurant on regular visits to Phoenix over the past 30 years (my first Yelp picture of Los Dos Molinas is dated 2013) and it's consistently been delicious whether I've had the enchiladas, the pork roast, or anything else on the menu. Everything they serve is spicy, but pay special attention to the chile symbols on the menu as they designate the items that are EXTRA spicy. As the chef says right on the menu, he doesn't know how to make mild. Los Dos Molinas is my favorite Mexican / New Mexican restaurant - I lived in Houston / San Antonio for 10 years and Oklahoma for 7, so I have a pretty good idea what Mexican food is supposed to taste like. Every time I visit friends in Phoenix, we wind up at Los Dos Molinos. It's a great gathering place, fun to watch people and oh so good when it comes to food and drink. It serves hot and spicy New Mexico style cuisine. I finally found out the story on the restaurant's name. The founders had two chile grinders, and that's what the name means, The Two Grinders. Many of the entrée's feature a chile next to them. That means it's "Hot". They don't provide mild sauce and they are proud to say they do not know how make "Mild". Beyond the delicious house Margaritas, the carafe of ice water was helpful throughout this meal. We arrived early for dinner on a Friday night and beat the rush that shows up a few hours later. We were seated in the outdoor patio, which with perfect February weather, was a great dining experience. The inside dining area is often described as homey with lots of spectacular artwork and sculptures. Every dish is prepared special and they make a point of telling you this isn't an assembly line/microwave restaurant. The menu offers entrees low in fat and gluten-free. The house specialty is slow-cooked, red chili-marinated Carne Adovada served over fresh tortillas. It was a standout for our meal. The available items will not let you down This is the best explanation I found online of the body's functions when spicy is introduced. If you are not certain you will enjoy spicy foods. Take yourself somewhere that will bring you more pleasure. A burning sensation spreads across the lips and ignites the tongue. Mucous membranes, which protect the lungs from harmful inhalables, go into overdrive, making the nose run. A surge of blood travels through dilated vessels and body temperature shoots up, triggering a full on sweat meant to evaporate the heat away. The lungs send an alert to the diaphragm to hiccup quickly and repeatedly in an attempt to evict the fiery invader. A full-blown reaction to spicy food is born. read more

I enjoyed my green chili stew with sopapilla on the side that I've had for the past 20 years. My husband had a taco salad and said it was the best, tastiest, crunchy shell he's ever had on a taco salad. Los Dos is an echo of what it once was. The recipes are still there, but the execution and love seem to be gone. We had a lunch adventure on a Saturday that was a comedy of errors and misteps. I ordered a bloody mary for lunch and got some sort of red margarita thing. It was undrinkable. Both of our entres came out incorrectly assembled. My beans were flooded with lime juice, rendering them inedible. The adovada still tasted as good as it did 25 years ago, but all else was a disaster. The reign of Los Dos over the Mexican food world in Arizona may be at its end. It is a sad day. read more

This used to be our favorite Friday dinner and a drink stop. The owner Cheryl would always make sure things went smooth even when the place was packed and the wait was 60-90mins. Since she retired and other family members took over the service has not been the same. Friday when we brought out of town family members the service was less than ideal. The waiters are all young guys more interested in what's going on in the kitchen than checking on the table to see if anyone needs something. I ordered chicken tacos and got beef tacos. The waiter never came back after dropping the food off and the floor manager Eric was the only one who tried to make it right by comping two shots for the table. Your online site has a special section for Taco Tuesday, but doesn't mention this. This is just the most recent, minor inconvenience. This New Mexican restaurant (Some like it Hot and if you ask very hot!) is amazing and has the best Carnitas and Adovada tender pork dishes I ever had with delicious rice and beans with a homemade flour tortilla( I had 3!) also had a fresh kick ass Sangrita so good and strong I really have to limit myself unless my buddy is driving. I generally finish by ordering sopapillas for desert fluffy pastries drizzled with honey and cinnamon sometimes I'll order it with vanilla ice cream. I'm getting hungry again just writing about it I can't wait to go back!! It's also located at the foot of South mountain and its amazing atop views of the Valley of the Sun. After a hiatus of about 8 years (and a bad meal) I decided to try Los Dos Molinos again because friends chose it. This will be the last time I eat there. For starters when I walked into the restaurant it smelled like an unclean bathroom aka urine. I was meeting friends so stayed, otherwise I would have left immediately. The menu is only online through the QR code. That worked fine. The server came immediately to take our order but after the food was delivered I never saw them again and the restaurant was not busy. I ordered the shredded chicken Burro, no sides. The flavor of the chicken was fine but I don't know if it was steamed or what, but it made the tortilla wrap soggy on the bottom. I asked to have the salsa verde on the side and received a dish that held about 1/8th of a cup, which was adequate. The burrito was topped with cheese and a little bit of shredded bag lettuce on the side. No pico, no sour cream. My biggest surprise though was when I went to pay I was charged $3.50 for the 1/8th cup of salsa verde. So at the end of the day there are hundreds of good Mexican restaurants and food trucks in the Phoenix, Metro area. Save yourself some money and go elsewhere to get a decent meal. read more
