Food is always good. We usually get pepper steak, curry chicken, and shrimp fried rice. Very fast and friendly service.

I eat at Lotus probably three times a month. The staff remembers us and that's always pleasant. We go there because the service is lightening quick, the lunch plate is generous with soup, egg roll, fried wonton, entree, and choice of white or fried rice. I usually have the beef delight. General Tso's chicken is good, but sometimes the pieces are small and taste like hard fried breading. Dinner time we frequently get the shrimp fried rice, which is not skimpy on the shrimp. If you're out to a quick lunch, you can go to Lotus and eat a good meal within 50 minutes from sitting down to paying the check. read more

Lotus Hunan Chinese Restaurant is in a strip center in Westlake that's near my office. A few of my co-workers recommended the place for lunch because of a nice mix of proximity, quality and service. Talk about being steered in the right direction (for a change) by my work peeps! I'm really picky when it comes to Chinese food and really am not a fan of most Chinese food places here in Austin. LHCR was an incredible treat and surprise! There are a few other better known spots here in the Westlake area like Chinatown and Suzi's, but thought the food here was more "authentic" in taste. I've been to LHCR 3 times for lunch and so far, this place does not disappoint. Starting at $7.25 for the lunch specials, you get a heapin' helpin' servin' of some delicious Chinese food. The Kung Pao Chicken and Curry Chicken have been stellar and the portions will leave you walking out thinking you know exactly what a woman feels like when she's 9 months pregnant! I was Totally Impressed!!!! The food was excellent. The service was great. The timing to get my food was within 10 minutes. Front desk guy is cocky and has bad jokes. The food was just... bad. That's rare for me to say because I have hardly ever not liked a Chinese place. My chicken seemed like it was scraped out a can and deep fried in the bottom of a bag of potato chips. Rice was mush. Don't really understand why this is rated so high. This place is great! Super friendly staff, great overall service and fast too! Just a little space in a strip mall off Bee Cave. We live nearby so decided to try it out, and will definitely be back! They are super happy to customize any dish on the menu how you'd like it -- sauce, veggies, meat. I love that. Got Shrimp and mixed veggies with a garlic sauce -- yum! Generous portions, so perfect for leftovers. And bottomless rice. They have great homemade spicy mustard, sweet and sour sauce and chili sauce, all of which were really tasty. Watch out because the mustard is spicy! My boyfriend got the Pork Lo Mein and Yum!! Lots of pork, yummy noodles and crunchy veg. Only giving it three stars based on the poor service I received while picking up my to-go order. The woman at the counter was quite rude, never smiled and simply just had a bad attitude. For the area that this restaurant is located, I'd think that she'd be a bit more polite. Beyond the rude woman, food is good and a good value. The man that works at the front counter is very nice and cordial. Lotus Hunan is one of the best Chinese food restaurants Austin Texas has to offer. It's family owned and operated by the Vo family and when you're there they will make you feel like family! I've been eating there for over twenty years and definitely have some favorites. The sesame chicken is fantastic! It has a sweeter sauce than most with hints of ginger and other spices. It can be made spicy or you can get hot oil on the side to make it to your own liking. In a close second is the cashew chicken. It has a nice brown sauce with great flavor and big pieces of chicken with fresh vegetables. My wife and I both love the classic egg rolls and I get the hot and sour soup as well. Regardless of what you order you won't be disappointed! My wife and I love Lotus Hunan so much we decided to have our rehearsal dinner here the night before we got married a little over 9 years ago! It doesn't pretend to be anything other than that. However, the specials board revealed a few dishes that you don't often see. This is one of those Chinese restaurants where you will look around and notice that everybody is non-Asian. Asian people don't eat here because the food is aggressively mediocre. The flavors are bland. It is the opposite of authentic. However, the servers and owners are really nice and they obviously have a great rapport with the local retired population as that seems to be this restaurant's primary clientele. Lotus Hunan is good if you are absolutely desperate for American-style Chinese food, you are nearby, and have literally no patience to drive anywhere else. Food was alright but service was awful they got the orders in the wrong order, a huge line of to go orders upset, the manager just sort of meandering around taking his time to go help the waitresses check people out. We waited over an hour at the table for our food and 20 minutes of standing at the counter just to pay and the restaurant wasn't even full. I understand being short staffed but the manager just taking his time to go help out was off putting. I've found the trick to dining in Westlake Hills is pretending you're in John Carpenter's "Escape from New York," where you'll be shot if you attempt to cross the border at MoPac. I'm certainly not belittling the Westlake dinner options here, it's just something I do when I don't feel like driving ten more minutes. The bottom line is if you have to have a go-to place in the hood for an occasional Chinese fix, then Lotus Hunan is here, they do the job, and they do it well. They're fast, friendly, and their service truly does move at the speed of light. It's typical strip-mall decor with nice families at night, but there are times when I'm less interested in the subtle nuances of ambiance and just want a mess of sesame chicken. It's a visceral thing. I could argue Lotus Hunan is a better value at lunch, their dinner menu is a tad on the pricey side, but they make up for it with ginormous portions, easily enough for two meals or people. I pretty much stick with the standard SWPL - beef & broccoli, sesame chicken, corn soup, egg rolls - it's always hot, it's always tasty, and it's always been comforting. I live very close by so I end up coming here for lunches or to pick up dinner on the way home. It's fast, convenient, and the service is great. You have to know what to get here since not everything is going to blow your socks off. If you get the right things, they do a really good job. Chicken and shrimp with spicy brown sauce is very good, they will have different specials with different greens/veggies mixed in with it. Hot and sour soup could be more flavorful, but still decent. The prices for lunch are much better than the prices for dinner entrees. Pretty much the only thing I get here is the chicken and shrimp with the spicy brown sauce. That's why I give it 4 stars (and also to compensate for some of the bad reviews, see below). The rest of the food might be more of a 3. I also want to stick up for this restaurant a bit. Some of the negative reviews here are kind of ridiculous in my opinion. For a place like this, who cares if they are filling your water glass too often? Seriously? Just tell them to stop. Also, someone said something about not being "authentic" enough for them. Have you been to China? Have you had the food there? I have done extensive travelling in China and have spent weeks at a time there...let me assure you, you do NOT want authentic Chinese food. Ok, maybe some of you actually do, but I would say most American people do not. If you want some deep fried whole frogs/toads, sauteed meal worms, or goose feet drenched in greasy oil, then go to Guangzhou and have a feast. I'll stick with the "Americanized" chinese food, thank you very much. I'll admit that that was a little harsh on all Chinese food. Before you read this, you should know one thing --no, two things about me: I am a cheapskate. I have a knack for picking awful Chinese restaurants. Maybe the two are related. Whatever the case, I am quite gun shy when it comes to trying Chinese restaurants. I have chewed on too much gristle, eaten too much poorly cooked rice, and been chagrined over chefs who go easy on the chicken in the Kung Pao. Enter Lotus. I must have hit bottom or something, because I'm not sure why I decided to try something new the other night. But I'm glad I did: Kung Pao Chicken that was full of gloriously tender chunks of chicken, appropriate amounts of fresh bell pepper and onion, the requisite peanuts, and a sauce that actually had depth of flavor. $10. If I go back there -- which I will -- and get another dish this good, I will be bumping Lotus up to five stars. And crossing one of those things you should know about me off the list. read more

LoHu (as I oh-so-cleverly call it) is, all things considered, my favorite Chinese restaurant in the area. That says a lot considering that I have eaten at dozens. They are not breaking new ground, but you can get the classics along with your favorite Americanized Chinese fare at a great price. I have not had a bad dish here, but I really love the Mongolian pork and the spicy scallion chicken. The eggrolls and soups are excellent as well. How much do I love this place? Well, when we moved I cut my commute to work by an hour each way during the worst months but we do not pass close to LoHu often like previously. It almost was not worth the move! If there is a Chinese dish that you like and you cannot find it on the menu, order it anyway. They will probably be able to accommodate. As with any good family run business the service is outstanding. It is owned and run by a terrific Vietnamese family. Knowing how well they do Chinese one day I think I will see if they can make me a Vietnamese meal. read more

I was curious to try this place after seeing that it is the most highly rated Chinese restaurant on Yelp that's close to my neighborhood. I've tried the others on Bee Caves Rd - Chinatown (not good) and Suzi's (decent), but I wouldn't consider myself a fan of either of them. So I was hopeful that this place would rise above the rest. My wife and I ordered a couple of standards to share - shrimp with lobster sauce, and chicken with cashews. As we waited for the food to come out, we were entertained by the music playing softly over the speakers - Guantanamera, La Bamba, and Tequila. Just not something we expected at a Chinese restuarant - but hey, we're in Texas. :) The food came out quickly and the portions were good. At many other places I've been to, they skimp on the meat and load up on the diced carrots/peas/water chestnuts, but Lotus Hunan didn't skimp on the good stuff. Also, the shrimp and chicken themselves were both fresh and tender, and the sauces weren't at all greasy which is so common at other places. Overall, we were very happy with our meal and have likely found our go-to Chinese place near home. We also noticed a lot of people picking up take-out, so that's probably in our future too. I have considered reviewing this place many times. It's close to my house and I've eaten here on several occasions. In truth, this place is between a 2 and 3 star place. There are a couple things they do VERY well, but overall... the menu is not all that great. For example, I cannot (under any circumstances) get my husband to return to this restaurant. He absolutely hates the food here and after three times, he told me "never, ever again." I, on the other hand, have a different opinion. Let's start with a couple good things about this place. The owners. The family that owns this place is super nice. They always remember me and what I order (from take out) when I show up. In a way, it really pains me to be negative about the place at all, but I also feel the need to be honest. I really like the owners and they are one of the reasons I kept coming back to this place for takeout even though the husband put it on his 'no way in hell' list (I go here to eat when he's out of town). The one thing I love love love here are the chicken wings. These beauties are a five star dish in their own right. I don't know what they marinate them in, but one of the ingredients has to be love. They are phenomenal. In all seriousness, they are among the best wings in the city. Sure, they have an Asian vibe to them, but that's what is so goooood. The marinade penetrates deep into the meat and they are pretty much the only wings I ever EVER crave. They are THE reason I keep coming back to this place. Try them. now. seriously. go. I also like the crab rangoons. They are not anything special, but they do a good version. I also occasionally get the sweet sour chicken or pork. What I like about their version is when you get take out, they give you a small bowl of the sauce separate from the meat. That keeps the fried bits somewhat crispy until you get to where you are going and eat. I really appreciate that. Unfortunately, the rest of the menu usually ranks with the Americanized generic Chinese food.... and most of it not all that great of a version. Many of the dishes trend towards either overly sweet or overly sour notes without a lot of balance between the two. I have attempted about 5-6 dishes on the menu and pretty much been disappointed in all of them (all are American Chinese standards). I know the family that runs this place is Vietnamese. If I could get one wish, I would ask them to start a second menu with Vietnamese staples. I would eat here at least once a week if they served Banh Mi sandwiches or Vermicelli bowls full of grilled porky love. read more

After reading good reviews on Yelp, I decided to try out Lotus Hunan with a coworker. Honestly, the lunch prices can't be beat. For about $8, you get your soup, an egg roll, and an entree. I was stuffed after! And the food was pretty good! My coworker ordered the curry chicken which was tender and delicioussss! I ordered the Mongolian beef which was also very good. Cheap, good food. DELICIOUS. Went here with a couple friends last week. I ordered the Velvet Corn Soup (basically egg drop soup with corn) which was good but I feel it's hard to screw up egg drop soup. I tried a bit of my friend's hot and sour soup and it was definitely spicy, but in a yummy way! For my entree I ordered the orange chicken and it was the BEST orange chicken I've had in my life. One of my friends got the General Tso chicken which was also very tasty. I loved the round seating areas with the high backs. Looked very cool and was comfy. This is some of THE best Chinese food I've had in all of Austin, secretly tucked away in a strip mall. I heart Lotus Hunan. I have no idea if what they serve bears any resemblance to actual Chinese food, as I've never been to actual China. But I have been to a zillion Chinese restaurants in other countries, and what Lotus Hunan makes is fab. I alternate between the Crunchy Shrimp Walnuts and the Mu Shoo Vegetables. The mu shoo isn't greasy, and the Shrimp Walnuts - purportedly Lotus' own creation - is super tasty, if not super healthy. Whatever. It rawks. On the inside it looks exactly like you want a Chinese restaurant to look. The people who work there are great. They remember regulars and even semi-regulars. The service is quick. TOO friendly, TOO fast, TOO attentive, TOO engaging,TOO fresh.

Staff is very friendly. Water is always filled for all the other customers in the restaurant. The waitress is attentive and good about checking to see if anything else is needed. Nice decor. Decently comfortable booths as I sat there almost 5hrs catching up. Nicely spaced out tables so you don't feel like you're crowded and bumping elbows. There's enough room on the tables to accommodate however many dishes you get, and if you wana share typical Chinese family style. Oh and good lighting... it wasn't super dark, so I could see what I was eating!! :) We got the lunch specials: General Tso's chicken and the shrimp & eggplant in garlic sauce. The lunch specials come with soup, eggroll, rice, and your dish. You definitely get a good size plate of food for lunch. This place doesn't skimp on meat, at least for both dishes ordered. The price is good and similar to other Chinese establishments around Austin for lunch... under $10. I'd love to have the $5 lunch specials they have in the large Chinatowns in San Fran and New York, but we're in Austin. Just like I'd love to have a house under $400,000 when I was living in Cali, but that's SoCal. The General Tso's chicken was pretty tasty, but it wasn't like the typical General Tso's ck I know. It was a little too crispy and more batter than I would like. It still tasted good, as in I enjoyed eating it but it wasn't General Tso's. It was more like sweet & sour or honey chicken or something to that direction which is not a bad thing but not what we expected when we ordered. The shrimp & eggplant in garlic sauce was great! There was a lot of shrimp! Unfortunately I like my eggplant and want lots of it, but I know most people like more meat. The sauce wasn't too heavy and thick nor was it watery. Good flavor in the sauce... not too garlic-y. The eggplant was cooked through properly. I hate eating large raw chucks of eggplant!! I wish the eggplant was slightly bigger, but that's my love for eggplant. :P Lotus Hunan has good Chinese food in comparison to many other Chinese food establishments in Austin.
