Another neighborhood gem. I guess going there three nights in a row for the same food/drink explains the five stars! It's probably not for everyone although it might appear that way weekend nights, but it is a solid location for great food and wonderful drinks. Open only in the evening, it's great to get there at 5:30 for a spot at the bar and if you're a regular John and Casey will have your favorite beverage waiting. First timer at Louie's this week! The atmosphere was not like many places in Dallas, it had an older feel to it which was really cool! Dirty martini to start followed by a few glasses of a cab. Drinks were delish and priced very well!! Got the meatballs as an app and a pizza for the main course - and both were very good! Definitely some good classic pizza that you can't find everywhere else. Everything was great except for our waitress that kept making the comment about hating the "22-25 year olds that come in here", to other tables by us. She was very moody that they were packed on a Saturday night and acted as if she'd prefer the crowd be only 40 years old & up. Heard her tell several other guests at the bar to move as she was walking by, and not in nice way. If I go back I'd just hope to have a different waitress but everything else was good. I went with a party of 6 and we were all so disappointed. The food was great but everyone that worked there was so rude. We left there talking about if it's worth ever going back because of how rude everyone working there was. The worst was the bartender who seemed completely miserable and was extremely rude. My friend asked if they had espresso martinis. His answer was "do you see an espresso Machine?" I ordered a dirty vodka martini. His resonse: "more specific" it doesn't sound that rude but his attitude was horrible. I don't know know what's going on there but the staff hates everyone for some reason. It pains me to change my review, but after my last experience there I feel it's time to update my previous review. Their service remains fast and friendly. I love the inside - it's like an escape from the world. But their quality of food has not been consistent, in my opinion. Last time we were there the pizza was incredibly salty and greasy. WOW! one the the best pizzas I've tasted outside of home aka Chicago. arrived before 5p had a good Long Island and a beer. Staff very friendly. A friend and I were there a few weeks ago and estimated how many times each of us had been to Louie's over the last 30 years. We easily topped a total of 500 times. Nothing special here. It's a dive bar that serves pizza. They do have an extensive selection of liquor but no beers on tap. The pizza, which took entirely too long to come out, is super thin crust and crisp. The edges were borderline burnt and literally crumbled in hand. Overall the pizza was lackluster - the cheese was more hardened than gooey/stringy and disproportionately thick. The flavorful thick-cut pepperoni were bright spot. They don't have any standard combos so all pizzas start as cheese-only and additional toppings are expensive. You want sausage and pepperoni? Add $6. And if you only want it on half the pizza, it's still full charge. If you want a tasty slice to fill your belly, you're much better off going to Coal Vines, Fireside Pies, Cane Rosso, Grimaldi's, or Urban Crust if you're further north. And if you're looking for a cool dive bar, there are others which are more divey and/or hipper in the area. read more

I've learned that in the world of online reviews the word BEST gets used quite a bit. When I'm deciding on which reviews (or reviewers) to trust I try and look at all reviews and get a general theme, which is how I ended up going to Louie's in the first place. Hopefully this review will lend to someone else trying Louie's for the first time. I think there are two types of Louie's experiences, the weekend Louie's and the weeknight Louie's. Both have their positives and negatives. Personally, I much prefer the weeknight Louie's. I find it to be very relaxing and a great place to help take your mind off a hectic day. I give Louie's credit for not being too ambitious with their menu. We're trying to ween ourselves off of the oft-mentioned pizza and on to their other specials. But first the pizza. Much has been said about it, and the general theme is that it is well above average. I firmly believe that if someone went to Louie's without reading any prior reviews they would be very happy with the pizza. The problem is that half of the reviews use Best in describing the pizza, so the expectation is set very high. Someone with Fireside or Olivella's on their mind is going to be sorely disappointed if they expect that type of pizza. I was fortunate enough to read recommendations on asking for the crust Extra Crispy, which is a must for me on this type of pizza. The crust is so thin it can get soggy if left for more than a few minutes, even when extra crispy. The sauce is slightly sweeter than I like, but the wife likes it sweet, so one of us is always going to be less than 100% happy. The Caesar salad is excellent. On our drive to Louie's I always suggest that we forgoe the salad in an attempt to save calories, but that suggestion never works. There isn't much too it. Romaine hearts, dressing and croutons. On our next meal we're going to try the Greek salad. I read somewhere that Louie was Greek. Don't know if it's true but the salad at the table next to us looked damn good. In discussions with our very pleasant weeknight waitress we were notified of the excellence of the Texas Chili special. It was excellent chili weather so we decided to try, and both were very glad we did. It is true Texas Red, not much but meat and chili powder. She also told us about the lasagna and asked if we'd like to be put on her "Lasagna Call" list. She has a list of customers that asked to be called when they have lasagna. From her description it sounds like a classic American style, just ricotta, meat, red sauce and mozz. I've spied steaks on nearby tables and they look to be very tasty, nice thick cuts with what evidence of very good broiler work on the crust. As far as the staff goes, we had an expectation going in based on reviews here. Our first experience on a busy Friday night was very pleasant. We've gotten both good and bad here, the bad usually coming from a specific waitress on multiple occasions. She likes to dictate when you order certain elements and gets pissed if you try to order more than just drinks on her initial pass. I find some things humorous that others might finding to be negative, so take my review for what it's worth. One example, we were walking in a group of 8 towards Louie's on weekend night. There were two people in our group that didn't want to eat there and were throwing out other options. Louie was sitting outside by himself smoking and overheard us talking. He loudly said "Yeah, they have much better food. I'd recommend you go there." I laughed and walked over to talk to him. He said "Those people are just going to be upset you brought them here, why deal with it. Just go where they want to go so you don't have to listen to them bitch all night" Sage advice, because they probably would have spent the entire meal bitching. Louie's was featured on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives, and I'd say that Louie's fits into the "Dives" category. They are known for their pizza so that's what I ordered. Even though the guys that run Louie's are from Chicago, Louie's makes a thin crust pizza. The pizza had a really good taste to it, and I think the sauce is what made this pizza rock. One of the owners, Louie, was one of the bar tenders and he was a really friendly guy. He's also a Cubs fan, which makes him even cooler. You could tell that Louie's has a pretty loyal local following, as I talked to several guys at the bar that seem to go there quite a bit. The only funky thing about Louie's is that they only accept cash or American Express. I had to run across the street to a convince store to get money. The hostess and waitress were really nice but both were swamped. The menu is limited and the prices were pretty high. I was looking for that signature item but nothing on the menu jumped out at me. I limit my drinking while traveling but was in the mood for a Lone Star, not on the beer menu? Isn't that a Texas must for bars here? Okay lets get to the pizza. Burned crust must be a Texas thing too because mine was carbon and so was the neighboring tables. Cut in little pieces like I was a 6 year old. Need a fork and dish you have to ask for it and then wait 5 minuets for one. The sauce was salty, the add ons are also pricey but hard to detect on the pie. I ate it because it was late and chances were most places would be close to closing by the time I got to another joint. It was edible but boiler plate meaning they phoned in their performance. It is house made but just good enough. It's also a cash only place that insures somebody's cheating on the IRS. I still give it 4 stars even with some of the worst waitstaff experiences ever there which says a lot about their pizza.
