One of my favorite spots along 24th to just chill, do some paperwork or just people-watch. There's your choice of sofa or booth and a pretty good menu if you decide to have something with a cup of their terrific coffee. Five stars for friendliness and sister-iness, but only three or four for decor and vibe. The interior is bright and clean -- no major problems -- just not a beacon of sophistication, artiness, and good design (yes, I'm qualified to make this judgment; my mom is a licensed home stager...). Reasonable prices. And I DO love the fact that there is a mini-wine bar. Ever cafe should have this feature. On the weekday that I chose to visit L's, it was pretty darn unpopulated. The music was set to a reasonable decibel level (thanks, ladies), though -- as a friend pointed out -- it was strongly reminiscent of elementary school roller skating parties. I ate here twice during my stay in the Mission District in San Francisco. Everything I had was good, freshly made and well presented. The chai latte was hot and frothy and good. First day I had the veggie bagel and added egg and spinach (in the pic) since I knew I had a long day ahead. Mostly I wanted all those good veggies: cucumber, sprouts, tomato and it came with hummus. I'm giving L's the benefit of the doubt because I think they have a lot of potential to be one of my go-to Mission cafes. I've been twice so far and have had some ups and downs. Overall, though, I really want to like this place so I'll keep going until something really upsetting happens. Visit #1: 10am on a Saturday morning. I order an egg, ham and cheese bagel to go. I get home and discover a ham sandwich with everything (sprouts, lettuce, tomato, olives, onion, the works). She must not have heard the 'egg' part. Nevertheless, I ate it and it was pretty tasty. Visit #2: 10am on a Saturday morning. I order a lox bagel and latte. The sandwich artist looks up with a confused face. The order-taker man points at the chalk board where it said "lox with cream cheese, red onion and capers". Sandwich artist still looks confused but attempts to make the bagel anyways. Order-taker notices he put swiss cheese on instead of cream cheese. Start over. Second attempt he got everything but the capers. Fine, I don't care for capers anyways. The latte was good. Two visits and neither was kink-free. If they continue to operate like a newly opened restaurant a couple months from now, I will have to stop going. In the meantime, they have a decent menu, good prices, and apparently serve beer and wine in the evening with occasional live music. I came here based on the amazingly positive reviews, but was surprised to arrive at lunchtime to a basically empty place and a very unclear ordering situation. (You order at the back, up a flight of stairs and around a corner.) I got the highly-acclaimed tofu and almond salad and eagerly awaited its delivery to my table. It was ... OK. The tofu was nicely grilled, but other than that it was just lettuce and those almonds that come pre-sliced in a bag. Eh. Cute indeed, but certainly not a 4.5 star place. read more

You know I think I took this place for granted. Being one block from my house, I never really thought to go there until Friday evening, when I wasn't feeling to well and didn't want to eat anything greasy (burritos, thai food or crappy pizza). So my boo and i walked over and enjoyed quite a meal. my veggie samwich was really good and the yogurt/granola/fruit platter really hit the spot. i was feeling better soon after that. The paintings and decor were really cool and I would love to enjoy a beer or glass of wine there one evening as well. Update: With Sugarlump crowded, I ventured across the street to a place where I've only had a sandwich. Seeking free internet and caffeine the people who work here and very kind and lax. I've been at this place practically all day running around sit to sit because cingular has the worst reception ever and they don't mind at all. My younger brother & sister decided we need to get some fresh air and take a walk down on 24th. and viola! L's Caffe looked curiously interesting enough to try it out. the ambiance of L's Caffe was definitely enough to release some of the stress that I've been dealin' with through out the day at the hospital. Part of me wanted to drink something harder already at the time, but i wasn't really sure it was appropriate to go have a drink already, i thought maybe save it when all is cleared at the hospital, but if i really did wanted to drink, i didn't have to leave L's Caffe, they had a pretty good list of fine wine selection along with a short list of short order dish that would go well with your choice of wine. i give it a 4 for now, definitely would recommend it, but personally i have to go for at least a 2nd time to give it further critique. read more

The ladies who work here are SUPER nice and there's free wifi. Never a wait to get a table with an outlet, which is a plus! Mediocre at best. If you're going to do sandwiches, you've got to do them better than this. My roast beef with swiss had a bunch of problems: - The cheese was in the exact middle of the sandwich, so it didn't melt. But the meat overcooked. - The mustard on the sandwich was cheap-o French's mustard, and it was layered on really splotchily. So you never know when you get a surprise bite of vinegar-and-cheap-mustard explosion. - The sandwich wasn't really heated long enough. It seemed stale because of this. If you're going to compete in a city with Ike's, banh mi from Fresh Brew Coffee and Little Vietnam *and* Tortas from myriad places, you have got to do better than this. I feel bad giving L's a 3-star rating. The women who own the place are wonderful and always smiling, they promote Mission culture and...they serve beer. L's Cafe has a much better food selection than Sugarlump so I often buy a sandwich there and then schlepp it over to Sugarlump for coffee and comfy study time. I really do try to make it a point to spend my time studying at L's but two primary reasons always cause me to end up at Sugarlump across the street. 1. The music is AWFUL...always. 2. The tables are all wobbly, no matter how many newspapers you stuff under them. If only they'd fix these two things, (I can handle the stale bread) I'd spend more time there and I'm sure others would too. read more

I came here looking for a decent sandwich, and after reading yelp reviews. And it was pleasant to find out that all the reviews are perfectly spot on: warm and friendly staff, sumptuous and healthy sandwiches (they even let me sample their sauce to decide if I wanted it in my sandwich), pretty good coffee and a really comfortable, calm seating environment. The service is good and quick, contrary to a couple of reviewers on here....I believe they were just having one of those bad days when just everything sucks :) tip: do try their pesto sauce in your sandwich, a nice blend of olive oil, garlic and other spices. I can't believe I've been going to L's for a year and still haven't reviewed it on Yelp. I love, love, love this place. The sisters who own it are super nice and very involved in the community and also support local businesses. It is bright, inviting and has REAL (sandwiches and salads mostly) food, which is rare for a place that has good coffee and tea. The chicken salad is especially good, as are all their bagel sandwiches. I haven't gone in the evening, but have heard great things about their wine and beer menu and the live music they have on occasion. Sugarlump and Philz nearby tend to be WAY too hipster for me, and I like the fact that I'm supporting a woman (and Latino) owned and operated business. Newly working back in S.F., I was on the lookout for a coffee spot near the school where I'm working. As luck would have it, I ran across L's café. Yay! I have had the most delicious mochas, fruit cups, and veggie bagels. (From past yelpers, it looks like I'm missing out on the hummus!) The decorum is cutesy, the service sweet and fast, and it's a mere 5 minute walk from my desk. What more can a coffee and bagel loving girl want? I always walk by here and wonder why it is so empty. After venturing in because Wise Son was closed the other day for breakfast now I know it is for good reason. It is bewildering how this cafe has remained open for even a few years, surely it is a front for some sort of illegitimate business? There is no other explanation. First off, the tables were all dirty. I take issue with this because, 1. I was the only customer there, so it was not at all busy. 2. It was relatively early in the day. 3. Dirty tables are gross. Moving on, everything was terrible from a simple iced tea that tasted like 'old fridge' to the sandwich that I mildly suspected could cause food poisoning before I discarded it. The good reviews for this place are incredibly shocking. Maybe this is more of a get coffee and don't eat anything type of spot but with Philz so close it's just not going to happen for me. That said, the staff is really nice, and it's not entirely their food the food is so terrible. But, it wouldn't kill them to wipe down a table either. Anyways, beware of this place, it is seriously, seriously gross. Like take someone here if you hate them gross. This is probably a good spot for some sort of sick, twisted revenge lunch. L's is one of those places you almost don't want to yelp about out of fear that the secret will be out and ruin the place. Unlike it's neighbor's sugarlump and Phil's, L's can always be counted on for fast, reliable internet. Truth be told it was the internet that first sold me on L's. The atmosphere kinda has the vibe of hanging out in your aunt's kitchen. It's comfortable, clean and the food is good, not gourmet but good. The staff is friendly and you can literally sit there for hours using the internet. What's great is in the evening they also service wine and beer, which proved to make me not very productive but it made a more enjoyable evening. The key to L's is knowing what to order, not everything is super but my favorites are: - The Chicken Pesto Crepe - Chai Tea Latte - Hummus Bagel - Fruit Salad (always fresh) - Cookies - Wine of course! read more

I've sampled every coffee shop on the 24st corridor from Mission to Potrero before making L's the regular stop for my java fix prior to putting in a long day of work. After sampling all of these coffee shops, I find they mostly taste about the same. The difference with L's is the exceptional service. The owner is super friendly and goes out of her way to ensure that your visit is perfect everytime. Even though I now make coffee @ work, I still stop in every now and again just because. If I lived in the area I wouldn't mind stopping in later in the day for lunch or a beer. The vegan friendly treats are a nice addition to go along with the unique styling and artwork that decorates the interior. Sadly, I have to deduct a star for the absurd practice of charging extra $ for alternative milks and not placing a container of soy or other non-dairy out along with the cream. L's Caffe has unbelievable food that surprises the hell out of you. All of the sandwiches are HUGE, in particular the bacon, egg and cheese bagel, which could feed a small armada of hungry hipsters. Their iced tea, coffee and chai are all amazing as well, and the prices make you feel like you're really getting your money's worth. On weekends they have a special brunch menu, which includes tasty treats like eggs benedict and Belgian waffles. The hollandaise sauce on the benedict has too much of a lemon hint for me, but it's delicious otherwise. On my last visit, they took a while to bring our order, and as an apology they gave us a whole new round of drinks (a latte, cappucino and chai) which really tells you all you need to know about the place. I'd come here for the service alone. Oh and even though it's standard nowadays, it's nice they have free wifi, since AT&T (surprise) doesn't seem to work that well in the restaurant. read more

This was a great find, thanks yelp. Came by here for a Saturday brunch after a night of drinking and found wicked awesome vegan sandwiches. Despite having breakfast elsewhere the next day, still came back for a bagel with vegan cream cheese and a coffee. Plenty of vegan and vegetarian options, a crazy nice cafe atmosphere and great service. The counter is kind of hidden in the back, keep walking in that direction and you'll get there. They'll bring the food over to your table so take a seat and enjoy looking at all the art and posters. Worth finding, we'll definitely be coming back on our next SF trip. read more

Oh L's! I'm a sucker for a bagel sandwich and I haven't found one in the city better than this. They have about 1,000 different offerings to stuff between your fresh bagel and thus far i've only been able to try a few. The veggie bagel with hummus is top notch but I tend to go for the bacon egg n cheese breakfast bagel when i'm on my way to work. It's HUGE, they don't skimp on anything, which is sadly rare in the breakfastbagelwich world. The staff are always super friendly, I've chatted with Lourdes a few times and she might be one of the most likable cafe owners in town. I mean, how many other owners are invested enough to be there almost every day with a smile and great service? The one, one thing I would change would be perhaps carrying a different type of coffee (i'm a bit too much of a snob) and rearranging the seating or getting some new, comfy chairs. Yeah, but these trivialities certainly won't stop me from popping in for a bag asap. read more

Based on my first experience here, I will be back. I like the area, the parking is actually decent, and the cafe has this really cool funky vibe with really cool art. And my mocha was nothing to turn one's nose up at. She pulled such great shots I really wish I hadn't changed my mind to nonfat milk at the last minute. Nonfat just waters down the flavor, I wish I didn't get a temporary calorie conscience last minute. At least the coconut macaroon made up for it, right? Heck ya! I'm so glad I decided to get out of my comfort zone today and wander down 24th towards Potrero Hill because I found this great gem of a place. I was looking for a good place to do some studying (Ritual is just waaaay too crazy on weekends and they don't let you plug in, fair enough), and this place was perfect. The vibe here is amazing, and its one of the few places in the Mission where there is actually a lot of diversity. There were people there having a community meetings, students studying, families enjoying a Sunday afternoon, etc etc. Aside from the customers, the actual space if really inviting, as are the owners/workers. They have tons of great organic/fair trade coffee and tea, good food options (including lots of veggie/vegan items), and its well priced. Oh yes, and there is free wifi. My favorite purchase of the day was Iced Chai, mmmmm. There is another new coffee shop across the street, called Sugarlump or something, obviously trying way too hard to be hip, and catering only to one segment of the Mission population. I'm not going to bash it before I try it, but support L's if you want to be part of our awesome diverse community. read more

This place has nice ambiance, the customer service was merely okay (they weren't particularly friendly), the table was too long and wobbly, and I wasn't satisfied with the food because of stale bread. I got a smoked turkey sandwich with pesto spread, and the ingredients in the sandwich were fresh, but the sandwich tasted plain, and the Dutch Crunch bread was STALE. The edges of the bread were so hard that I could tap them on the table and make a loud sound with it. My teeth were hurting quite a bit, after I finished the sandwich. They shouldn't serve that kind of bread if it has gone stale by 7 PM on a Friday. I understand Dutch Crunch bread should have a "crunchy" texture, but this one did not. If it is fresh, it's crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. This bread was just hard (not crunchy) all around. Ouch. The empanadas were pretty good. Their bathroom was very clean. Not worth going out of my way to eat here. And it's not worth the price for a regular sandwich with stale bread. Yelp, why have you been misleading me, constantly, recently? And, wow, I just saw the Yelper below who had the same experience with the stale bread and wobbly tables! On point. read more

Came here for brunch on a Sunday. The savory crepes are delicious; I ordered the pesto and chicken, along with a latte. The serving size is just perfect, one crepe lasted me till well into late afternoon. The coffee, was nice and strong, and kept me going for the rest of the day. I had the most disgusting lunch ever here yesterday. It may have been the nastiest thing I've ever tasted in my life, and I'm pissed that I had to pay $11 for it. I had about two hours to kill before a doctor's appointment and decided to find a place to eat lunch and read a book. I picked L's Caffe based on its superb Yelp rating. The cafe was clean, spacious, not loud, and furnished with comfy chairs--perfect for reading. I was hungry and ordered a soy hot chocolate with whipped cream and eggs benedict, both of which I love. I got my hot chocolate right away, sat down at a table, and waited a long time for the eggs. I was finished with my hot chocolate before the eggs arrived, but that was ok, as I figured it meant that my lunch would be very fresh. When the waiter brought it over, however, I noticed something wrong immediately. First, there was way too much Hollandaise sauce on top of the eggs. I'm used to having the sauce drizzled on the eggs, and in this case, there was so much sauce I couldn't even see the eggs. Second, when I moved the plate, the sauce jiggled like jello. Or two lumpy breasts. That kind of grossed me out. I am no culinary expert, but Hollandaise sauce is not supposed to move like that. Unsure of what to do with the eggs, I took a bite of potato and almost spat it out. The potatoes were very under-cooked and had almost the same consistency as tough, sinewy meat. It was like biting into the shittiest piece of steak ever. I tried another piece of potato just to be sure. Yup. Definitely under-cooked. And way too greasy. To erase the taste of the potatoes, I took a huge bite of Hollandaise-covered egg. Big mistake. Really really big mistake. I have no words to describe the sauce other than "completely fucking disgusting." I didn't know (and still don't) if it was because the sauce had gone bad, but it did not sit well with my palate at all. I'd had many eggs benedicts before and knew what Hollandaise sauce was supposed to taste like, and this was definitely not it. I tried to swallow what I'd bitten off, gagged, and regurgitated it into a napkin as daintily as I could. I drank lemon-flavored water to wash out the taste to no avail, so I gagged a little more, coughed, and since I had a slight cold, some phelgm came up out of my throat, and even that tasted better than the eggs. Yes, I was actually thankful for the flavor of my snot. That's how nasty the food was. I sat there for a while trying to figure out what to do. I even texted the Boyfriend for advice. He told me to send it back and tell the waiter that it was too salty or had gone bad or something, but I felt like that would have been lying, because a) I wasn't sure if it had gone bad and b) the real problem was that it was just purely fucking gross. I finally brought the plate to the counter and told them pretty much that. They were nice enough to give me a bagel with bacon and cream cheese for free, which I ate gratefully. So, if you ever find yourself at L's Caffe in San Francisco, you know what to stay away from. This place deserves 2 stars and not 1 only because the staff and venue were nice. read more

A classmate chose this place to study and as the study buddy, I was like, hey, a new cafe to try. So here is my review: Scene: The layout of the cafe is quite unusual. You have to take the stairs to the counter if you want to order something. Otherwise, very cozy (comfy chairs). Problem-- lighting is quite dim. Cleanliness: Nope, nope, and....nope. Food: I ordered a fruit and cream crepe for $4.50. It was cheap. However, I've certainly had better crepes elsewhere. Finally, since my main objective was to get some studying done, I would say that the place is quite loud (24th and Bryant is a busy street) and not conducive to studying. My rating, however, is not based on the fact that it is in a loud neighborhood (the cafe can't really control this aspect) but on the scene, cleanliness, and food. read more

Pretty good place to sit and get some paperwork done before work starts. Place seems clean and the tables are decently lit. I order the tuna melt at the cashiers lady's opinion. Decent price especially at SF prices. $9 Damn. That is one large tuna melt. They must've cut the loaf themselves. It also comes with fruit and a potato salad!! Definitely worth the price. Oh, yeah.
