We stopped by here when we were let off our cruise. We got the wings, some nachos and a couple of beers. The wings were pretty good, and the buffalo sauce was perfect. Luau Larry's is right in the heart of Avalon and is very inviting. Great views, cool tiki bar vibe, and it looked like a fun spot to hang out and enjoy a snack and a drink. We got there when they opened, sat at the bar and started exploring the extensive drink menu. I noticed on the website when I was exploring Catalina that they pride themselves on "a staff second to none, eager to assure that your visit is memorable." We didn't find their motto to be true. The place wasn't packed, and the bartender didn't seem to want to answer any questions or offer any recommendations when asked. We finally settled on our drinks and ordered chips, salsa and guacamole. The chips were good and not greasy. The salsa was your typical salsa and the guacamole tasted fresh but was missing salt. The drinks were good, not great and the staff just didn't seem to want to interact and have fun. I guess that is what you get when you are in a tourist town. This is one tiki bar we can check off and don't need to go back. read more

I'm going to give them a bump with the stars. It's a silly but fun spot. We hit the lottery and got the table closest to the entrance facing the water. There's no better spot for people watching. Daredevils that we are (dare I say, heroes?), we ordered the nachos again, this time without adding any (dry, tasteless) chicken. They were smothered in melted cheese and were absolutely delicious. I can't give them 5 stars because the drinks are really expensive and I honesty could not tell whether there was any alcohol in them. I mean, come on now. They looked good but to get any kind of buzz, you might be better off ordering beer or shots, honestly. No reservations so if you see an open table or a spot at the bar, grab it immediately. The place is small and gets very crowded. Absolutely kid friendly during the day. There are even a few kid's meals listed at the bottom of the menu. Weekend nights and any holiday, you'll always find Luau Larry's jumping with people and hard to find a spot to sit. On a normal weekend daytime visit, it can still be busy, but with room to spare. You'll generally wait a bit for everything because the daytime crew is smaller, but overall, you'll get everything in a bit. Not really the spot to come if you're trying to quickly grab a bite to eat before jumping on the ferry in less than an hour. Tiki themed spots always seem to have a bit of built in fun, but the staff, drinks, food and patrons here will always take it up a notch. read more

I was a devoted customer of this iconic Bar & Grill for years, until this past weekend. I guess they just became too big for their britches? Lower quality food & service, and higher prices. This is what has become of Luau Larry's in the recent years. They are constantly under-staffed and this affects their service. My wife and I seated ourselves, as nobody greeted us at the door. We sat at a dirty table for nearly 20 minutes, before someone came and wiped it down. There was still no sign of a server to take our drink and food order. The table behind us were seated well after we sat down and our server took their orders before us! We felt like 2nd class citizens. The burger I ordered on the menu said it was a 1/3 pound beef burger, but my burger arrived looking like a McDonald's cheeseburger. It wasn't even real cheese, it was Kraft Singles! The bill was $73.00 for two burgers and two drinks. Take a look at my before and after photos! You won't believe the difference. I did not leave a gratuity for our server. I went here last month and ended up missing my boat back to the LBC after getting food poisoning from eating raw oysters here. I remember I saved the biggest oyster for last and told my boyfriend that it had tasted weird. I could not get the taste out of my mouth and kept eating lemons. We shared everything else, clam chowder and fish and chips, but the only thing we didn't share was the oysters. I had told our waitress that the last oyster tasted weird and all she said was, "oh, sorry." The service was terrible. We had been seating for 15 minutes before even getting drinks or any acknowledgement from a server. So back to the food poisoning. We ate here at noon and by 4:30 we were in line at scoops before we had to get back to the ferry terminal. I started feeling clammy, dizzy, and delayed-- it felt like I got drugged. I excuse myself from the line and go to the bathroom and begin throwing up. I couldn't even stand. My equilibrium was off. My boyfriend had to find a firefighter as I sat on the pier half conscious throwing up and heaving. They instantly put an IV in me and drove me to the ER on the island. After running multiple tests on me, pumping me with fluids and administering different meds, they came up with the conclusion that I had food poisoning. While I know that there is a risk of food poisoning while eating shellfish, restaurants need to make sure they're storing seafood properly. Overpriced and subpar. I have PTSD from raw oysters now which were once my favorite. read more

We ordered chicken & a couple of beers. Our server brought us over a couple domestic bottles ($5). He came with the food & we never seen him again. We had to get ketsup from another table, and we ended up with hamburger not chicken. We ended up eatting the burger, since the server never returned to ask us how we were doing, or if we needed anything else. We finished our drinks & considered going to the bar for another.. But I'm not a big Guns & Roses fan and I really couldnt stand the music any longer. Finally we were able to flag the server down for our tab. We paid & left. We came here for breakfast because literally every other place on the island had a 30-45 minute wait. We came in and it was relatively empty and we got a table for 6. The service here is slow especially which is unfortunate. I got the Denver Omelette with Hashbrowns. The food took a while to come out and it was just an average omelette. There was nothing too special about it. We probably won't come here again unless we're in a pinch. read more
