the staff is very nice here. the atmosphere is nice with an upscale hipster vibe. but they lost me at latte. because we were the first brunch customers of the day perhaps the grill had not yet gotten fully hot yet? the eggs and everything on the plate of food was coated in oil (arugula with no vinegar just oil, acme bread drenched in grill oil, but not browned) rendered the food tasteless. the potatoes were not browned, but were steamed. the $5 latte was served in a pretty crystal whiskey glass but was half espresso half foam, very bitter! according to research, a latte has up to 8 oz of almond milk or other milk. if they do not want to serve a latte, it should not be on the menu. i usually tip 20% so i don't mind the mandatory service charge, but maybe print it on the menu prominently as forewarning? read more

Epic dinner, sat at the bar and the owner Alessandro served us. He told us about his family friends who own the vineyards where the wine we drank was produced, amazing knowledge. We had calamari and roasted Brussels, both great. But the mains were the stars of the show, the hand cut linguine for their pesto pasta was unreal! The hand tossed dough, made from single 0 flour, was super light and airy, I could have taken down another pie easily--we had the prosciutto & rucola. We had dinner here w/ friends before a concert at The Back Room. Alan made reservations for 6:15 and we were seated promptly. The room's decor is more industrial and less warm than Belli Osteria's. Both couples ordered the roasted Brussels sprouts w/ cauliflower to share. Alan and I wanted the farm greens salad, but they were out of them and so we opted for the vegetarian fritto misto instead. We ordered the quattro formaggi pizza which came w/ smoked maple syrup for $17. We added crimini mushrooms for $3. The Brussels sprouts and cauliflower were served first. They were good, but not the best we've had. Most were nicely caramelized, but not all were. The portion seemed adequate for the price. The fritto misto was a nice mixture of vegetables, crisply fried. Good taste and texture. The pizza service was kind of disorganized. First we were brought the wrong pizzas. Then they were picked up and taken to the table to which they belonged. After that there was a long wait for ours. When they were brought they looked good, although the mushrooms on ours were pretty sparse for the $3 upcharge. The pizza was cut into 4 slices. The center was pretty soft and we used a knife and fork to eat it. It was tasty, but not exceptional, certainly not the best pizza we've had in Berkeley. When we were driving home Alan mentioned that we were charged $2 for the maple syrup, which according to the menu was included. It's a small amount of money, but annoying to be charged for something that's supposed to be on the pizza at the price listed. A 20% tip is included on the bill, a fact that is highlighted, which we appreciated. The food and service were OK. As Alan said, "3 stars and 2", which in our family means 2 visits, first and last. We probably won't be back. We liked Belli Osteria, which was in this space previously, much better. read more

The best Italian food in the east bay quite possibly! I blissfully overate a 4-course dinner here, a rare feat for myself, but the food here has a way of inspiring you to go overboard. I had the best margherita pizza of my life here, along with the best pasta dish (the one with the clams, I forget the name) I've ever tasted. The service was soooo good and attentive too, even on a busy Saturday night! I haven't stopped talking about this place since I've tried it! This is an amazing restaurant owned by real Italians who know what they are doing. We came here because of Yelp reviews because we wanted pizza but discovered so much more. We had the shishito peppers, brussel sprouts, salmon, pasta and two pizzas. The owner recommended the Spudsy Pancetta! Delish!!!! As well as the chocolate mousse with orange zest WOW. This vegan margherita pizza is by far the best vegan pizza I have ever had. They use Miyoko's vegan cheese and it is so tasty compared to others. We also had two starters, the shishito peppers and the caponata, and they were both fantastic as well. I will definitely be coming back soon. read more

Come here for the wood fired oven pizza! Tiny facility with bench tables for small groups. I ordered a bowl of handmade pasta. It was good but everyone around me was eating pizza.... that's when I saw the oven in the kitchen. Definitely worth it if you can get a table. read more

Astonishingly good! I've NEVER had a pizza outside of Italy that was as authentic and delicious as this. Thin chewy crust, bright sweet fresh tomato sauce, nutty fragrant parmigiano, generous personal size. Aesthetically perfect. And done in a jiffy in their 1000 degree pizza oven shipped from Naples. We finally got real Naples pizza in Berkeley! If you go to A-16, you'll pay a lot more for it. The vegan pizza with vegan cheese is delicious! And the have gluten free dough also. This is a relaxed atmosphere local restaurant with a delicious menu that includes good non pizza items and sides that are perfect for a quick bite with or without wine. We sat at the bar and saw the pizza being made fresh right in front of us in a real Italian wood oven. Quick, and friendly service. You get attentive service right away by some of the Italian staff or other wait staff. I love it! read more

Best Pizza in the Bay hands down! I left a similar review on google-and had to post one here also, because I just love this place THAT MUCH! I honestly felt like I was transported to NYC. I miss that city and this was a great perk that I didn't expect. The ambiance is incredible. It's modern, spacious, clean and simple. It was also quiet, which was great. I love to actually hear the people I'm at a table with. The guy making pizza is an authentic Italian that grew up in Italy. I do believe this matters-despite the fact that there are amazing chefs in every country. This is the real deal though. The gluten free pizza is just as delicious, crispy and thin as the OG version! The flour is imported from Italy and that's huge considering that I wouldn't touch US grown wheat. No GMO's in this place! My husband ordered the traditional margarita pizza (gluten + cheese) which I never eat, but I felt great after eating it! They ferment the dough just right. The basil is super fresh, as well as the greens in the side dishes. The brussel sprouts and kale salad were just as tasty, with new flavors I didn't expect; like very thin, toasted lemon slices in the brussel sprouts and hot sauce in the kale salad. Pleasant surprises :) The kale salad has just the right amount of spice. Totally unique. The icing on the cake is the price. I would have paid more for the quality! This is a rare find in the pizza world. I usually end up feeling like crap after I eat pizza and this was certainly not the case after my visit to Lucia's. We finished our experience with cannoli and they were perfect. Small, not too sweet or sugary, fresh and fluffy. The filling is usually way too dense but these were light, and sooo good! Came here last night for date night, and we were blown away by the authentic Neapolitan pizza (the wood burning oven is in the back, and you can sit by it to watch if you like). Not only did they offer GF and vegan options, but there were plenty of toppings to choose from and a wine list that was fairly extensive. This tasted exactly like pizza in Italy - and as an added bonus, our waitress was Italian, so I got to practice my rusty Italian skills! We're planning on being regulars here. read more

We were having a little miniature reunions before we went to the play at Berkeley Rep. The service here is top-notch. The waiter was very friendly and quite accommodating. As you can see we were campers by the length of our stories and by the way people would chitty chatting, he was very patient with us. So we had some pizzas, some pasta, some olives, some wine, and enjoyed everything. The olives were in appetizer and were just lovely. I'm an olive Hound and I could eat that appetizer twice, and never blink. The pizzas more like individual pizzas with just a few things on them we had two different kinds one with red sauce and one with white sauce and very promptly they disappeared. Tasty and deed and so many choices that it could be difficult to make up your mind. The pasta had a nice crunch on the top where it was baked and and noodles that were done just right. I'd go back for more of that. The carafe of wine lubricated all of the party to just the right level to go see a play. I love this place! Their pizza Napoletana (with some added mozzarella di bufala) is so delicious that I crave it! The owners are incredibly accommodating to young children and adults alike. Whenever we have guests in town, we make Lucia's a destination. So glad to have a taste of Italy so close by. read more

We stumbled into this place a Saturday evening few weeks ago. I guess we were lucky to get at least a couple of stools at the pizza counter. We had two pizzas: the four cheeses and the one with bufala mozzarella. We added a glass of wine to share between the two of us and we ended up paying $65. Sixtyfive dollars for two pizzas and a glass of wine! And the pizza was not even so great. The dough was undercooked and chewy, the topping just OK for the one with bufala mozzarella and way way way way way too much cheese in the other one! Last week I went back home in Italy to see my family. One evening I met some old friends for a pizza in my hometown. My friends complained that the pizza was just OK. To me, that tasted magnificent after the one I had at Lucia in Berkeley!! read more

We got the Margherita, Sprouty Scamorza, Squash King, and a Margherita with broccoli rabe and ghost pepper maple syrup. 1) Sprouty scamorza is incredibly bland. The only flavor comes from when you are unpleasantly surprised by biting into a lemon slice. It ruins the entire pizza. Also just feels like you're getting a mouthful of grass with all those raw brussels sprouts (this coming from someone who loves brussels sprouts). 2) Squash king doesn't taste like squash? Or much like anything? Ended up dumping a bunch of red pepper flakes to give it some flavor. 3) The Margheritas were decent. Couldn't taste the ghost pepper in the maple syrup, which was disappointing. 4) The dough was good-ish. Too chewy for me to truly be Neapolitan style, but perhaps that's the Brooklyn twist in it. tldr; bland pizza. Red sauce slightly redeemable. I read a review that their red pizzas were better than their white pizzas and it was 100% true. Now for the service: after taking our order, our waiter completely abandoned us for the rest of the evening. Even when our plates were cleared and we wanted a dessert menu, we were unable to get anyone's attention for 20+ minutes. Finally we flagged another server down and asked for the check, at which point we realized why we'd been neglected - there's a pre-determined 20% service charge, so there's no need for good service to encourage a good tip. We wouldn't have minded the 20% service charge had we actually had good service. The business of the restaurant isn't an excuse either; we saw our waiter in the back casually chatting to some people for about 10 minutes while we were trying to get our check. Overall: highly disappointing pizza and service, esp for $110. Go to Gioia or the Cheeseboard instead, your stomach and wallet will thank you. read more

5 of us had dinner. I was happy to see lots of vegan options. We had vegan and non vegan Brussels sprouts, rosemary fries, vegan margarita pizza and non vegan pizza, everything was very good, except I didn't care for the vegan pizza - crust looked crispy but wasn't and I didn't like the vegan cheese. The meat eaters liked their pizza though. Server was prompt and friendly. It was quite noisy though. Be sure to check out the wallpaper in the bathroom. read more

Lucia's has such a great vibe, love the simple lofty decor. The staff is very gracious and knowledgeable on wines. But that's not it... the food is delicious, tried the porcetta... and was amazed. I was actually surprised that I liked the plain Lips of Fire pizza even better than the Shroomy pizza (though it was good with olives), but the tomato sauce is so good and it wasn't as hot as I thought it would be. I actually like the fact that the toppings are limited to a few pre-determined combos that they have perfected - can't go wrong with any of them. After a wonderful night with my teens at a Berkeley Rep show on 4-29-17, we had dinner at Lucia's. I thought it odd that the waitress wouldn't let us sit until she asked the kitchen if they were still open (it was 10pm) . . . . the answer was yes. The food on the menu sounded great BUT once we got the food, clearly something was wrong: 1. The garlic fries we ordered looked like the last of the frozen fries out of a bag. Some were long, about 3 inches but most were 1 to 2 inch fries. Do 1 inch fries sound appetizing to you? I didn't feel like complaining since we were having such a fine evening. 2. Next up our Margherita pizza. When it was brought to our table I actually felt like laughing. The pizza looked super thin, tomato sauce only, no cheese and 3 basil leaves. THREE basil leaves. I thought maybe my daughter ordered it that way so I didn't say anything. I was in the restroom washing my hands so I didn't hear what my daughter ordered. None of us said anything because we were all being polite for the sake of each other. 3. White sauce potato mozzarella pizza. Again, paper thin pizza, super saucy, the cheese and potato were very bland and tasteless but the kids were hungry and ate it anyway without saying a word. I kept looking around for salt but saw none on any of the tables. We all ate without saying anything about the food. The service was great although during the drive home I wondered, were we just mocked and pranked? A $77 bill for crappy food and a 20% tip automatically added to the bill made me feel like an idiot in retrospect. Later that evening my son apologized for choosing Lucia's. He felt bad that I wasted $77+ and he was wondering why I didn't say anything about the food quality. I explained I just wanted to stay happy - not let the evening end on a rotten note. I called the 415 area code number on my receipt the following day to discuss the quality of the food we received but no one has returned my call. I'm a single mom who scraped up some money and treated my kids to a GREAT Berkeley Rep show "Irving Berlin". We drove 60 miles to get to Berkeley. I wanted to top it off with a nice, light dinner, but dinner was horrible. What makes things worse is, why would the cook be so mean, rude, insulting by putting no effort towards our order???? Did I look like I was not going to pay? Really insulted by this experience. I will never eat at Lucia's again. I feel like an idiot for not saying anything the minute the "food" was brought to our table. read more
