Great service! Always packed and typically has a wait. It was also a bit loud when I went. We called in for a reservation and were notified that there would be a $10 charge per person that didn't show. Thankfully everyone arrived on time but that was surprising to hear. Now let's talk about the sushi, since that seems to be what they're known for. Quality was pretty good and fresh, but they could have added more fish to the rolls. Being a huge sushi fan, I've been on the prowl for a good sushi spot while in Richmond. Most people have recommended Akida, which was just a terrible experience since the atmosphere and sushi sucked over there. Lucky AF has been mentioned by some people but crossed off my list by others. I decided to give it a shot yesterday as I was craving sushi. The parking situation is pretty solid here as there was plenty of street parking. The ambiance here is pretty neat. The bar was already pretty busy at opening at 5 PM. The Cucumber Salad here is just what it is, Cucumber in a vinegar based dressing. They didn't have Uni available yesterday but the bartender stated they usually have it. I can let this go as it was a Monday and a lot of places don't have it early in the week due to delivery schedules, etc. The Yellowtail Ceviche isn't really Ceviche but Yellowtail Jalapeno that you'd see at other places. It was ok. The vinegar based dressing had a very strong vinegar profile to it which I'm not used to with Yellowtail Jalapeno. The Baby Krish Roll was solid as it combined Spicy Tuna and Filet Mignon. The hot sake comes out of a machine which makes for a quick turnover and the service was solid. It might be impossible to give any sushi restaurant in Richmond 5 stars as I'm from a New England coastal city with great fish and a lot more competition than you'll find in Richmond. They don't make reservations for parties smaller than 6 so we put our name down and headed to a close-by brewery while we waited. The miso soup is amazing, and so is their seaweed salad. Lucky AF is modern and is not the place to go if you are looking for a more traditional Japanese restaurant (Katana or Nami). Sushi, sashimi, and rolls are delicious but chicken teriyaki may taste too tasty for some people. I've dined in about 5 times now and staff has been friendly every time. The food is good, but not great. There's lots of seating so you usually don't have to wait very long for a table. The service is hit or miss, but usually hits. I've tried quite a few things on their menu and have landed on getting their poke bowl most of the time because it's a great value. The first time I went here I fell in love. The sushi was tasty and fresh! Loved the drinks and ambiance. The second time, I invited two of my friends. We enjoyed everything but in about 24 hours we all started having the same symptoms of food poisoning. It's been awful for all 3 of us. Not sure if the food wasn't clean or maybe it wasn't refrigerated at the right temperature but everything that was inside has been wiped out of us . The esthetics of this restaurant are so neat! The hostess stand is in very close proximity to the door so when I walked in there were people already waiting and had to squeeze by. We were seated shortly after, not a long wait. It was noon on a Saturday. After being seated, we waited a short time for someone to stop by. They dropped off water for the table. The water glasses were so small however. I had to constantly refill my cup. We ordered a couple of sushi rolls: Shrimp Tempura Roll, Lucky AF roll, Flash roll, and lobster roll. The only roll I liked was the Lucky AF. The Flash roll was really off putting bc it was flash fried so the meat was still raw but warm. The shrimp tempura is a classic but I've had better. And the lobster roll I didn't like much either, I think the combo of everything in the roll just may not have meshed well, not completely certain. I've established the fact that I love this place by the sole amount of times I've eaten here. It never seizes to amaze me. The service is great and the food is even better. You cannot go wrong with the galaga and Robin rolls on the HH menu if you are here for lunch. I also had Nathan as a bartender when I came here last and he was so knowledgeable about the food, the drinks and his enthusiasm made me feel less awkward about eating alone! Finally got around to trying Lucky AF and had a great experience here! We came for the lunch special and it was great. I ordered the teriyaki bento box which came with a spring roll, fried rice, and California roll. Everything was great. The chicken was cooked well and had plenty of sauce. The California roll is a basic roll, but is one of the better ones I've had - it didn't have too much rice and was packed on the inside. The fried rice and spring roll were great too. Overall we had a great experience here. Location is very welcoming and the service was very attentive. The bar seems like a nice place to grab a drink as well if you wanted to come just for that. I thought the lunch special was a great value. I would definitely recommend and return. I met some work colleagues for a catch-up lunch at Lucky AF today. We were looking for a place to satisfy several cravings as well as dietary choices, and given there are not a ton of sushi options located centrally in the city this was a great choice. They have lots of interesting and unique appetizers, a giant list of sushi rolls (ranging from traditional options to ones including yummy extras like filet mignon and fried oysters...all with fun names), and a decent list of beer, wine, and cocktails. Something for everyone! We got the lobster dumplings which were divine. The ricotta cheese really complimented the lobster, and the wine garlic butter drizzle...yes please! Everyone enjoyed their selections, including a bento box, poke bowl, miso salmon, and several sushi rolls (with one being veggie only). The serving sizes were all hefty and the service was good. There were a couple of issues though. I found the miso soup to by way too salty, couldn't eat it, but others were able to. When we arrived the place was empty but they put our group of 5 at a very small table when larger options were available. And one of our colleagues was disappointed the to-go box did not have a handle, lol. Lucky AF is probably a bit more expensive than the normal sushi places I go, and it is not the best sushi I have ever had ... but given it's central location and wide variety of options, including unique rolls you won't find anywhere else, I will certainly be back. Today, I decided to order my favorite Lucky AF Roll for lunch. It was a pick up order. By the time I arrived to the restaurant, the food was ready. When I returned to work to eat my food, I was VERY DISAPPOINTED. The sushi tasted old. The tempura shrimp tasted as if it was cooked yesterday or early this morning. The coating and shrimp itself was hard and dry. The crumbles on top of the sushi were stale and even the sweet soy sauce looked like it had been resting on the roll for a day or more. The food was not flavorful at all! It was quite disgusting. Never will I ever order a to go order from here again. Should I decide to eat here, it will be inside the restaurant. They seem to care about the food they serve when you are actually present within the restaurant. I have nothing but GREAT things to say about Lucky AF - from the amazing art on the side of the building to the wonderful vibe inside with its modern decor and awesome sushi bar in the side backroom. My husband and I had dinner here with another couple and I think it was the best way to do it. Going with a good group and trying lots of different appetizers and sushi rolls is truly the only way to do it. Our group started with the lobster dumplings and tuna tartar which were both out of this world. We had several sushi rolls and they were all an explosion of tasty yumminess.
