I recently moved to Richmond. I realized how little Asian food there is here. Specifically sushi. This restaurant has a unique edge to the Asian scene here in Richmond. Although it is really difficult to get a table and reservations are recommended but only taken for parties of five or more, it is definitely worth it. Fish quality was decent, flavors were good, but unfortunately marred by the subpar quality of the rice. Miso calamari was good, but could use more miso flavor. I also ordered the tobiko sushi separately, and was given masago. This might not be a big deal to people who aren't particular about accuracy, but masago is not tobiko. My first and there will be many more ventures was tonite to Lucky AF. For a Wednesday night it was quite busy and I soon learned just why after I took a seat at the bar. Service seated at the bar was quick and attentive which is a win win. I ordered fried pork dumplings and spicy tuna rolls from the happy hour menu. The dumplings were perfectly fried and the accompanying dipping sauce was fine. The spicy tuna rolls were zingy and lovely. I also ordered a Dragon Roll which was so artistically plated that made me feel sad about eating it. The eel was perfectly cooked and the jalapeño did not overpower the other ingredients. Simply said: harmony in one bite sized roll. Oddly I ended my meal with a bowl of miso soup it's only detraction is it needs to be served hot not lukewarm. The earthy saltiness of the seaweed and miso was a great closer to a great meal. So make haste to this fabulous place. I give it a 5 chopstick review!!! read more

The mural alone draws you in & the great happy hour .They have $5 rolls and happy hour is everyday. I would check the website for updates . When I went it started at 2:30 but it's seems like they changed it . Decor is nice and they do have a parking lot. Patio was booked but it seemed spacious . I had the Robin Roll and the Galaga Roll both were advertised as "spicy" but it was NOT spicy at all.My friend who cant do anything spicy was able to eat both rolls and agreed. I think the thai sweet chili sauce on the Galaga roll was overpowering . I will say, I enjoyed the mackerel nigiri and would come back just for that . I thought the names for all the rolls were creative and the menu had a good variety with some twist as well. If your looking for a sake bomb experience you will not get it here . The shot glasses are too big for the beer. We just pour our sake shot and mixed it with the beer . Which Is what it is essentially. I have been there for dine-in and recently for take out. The Lucky in Love boat feed enough for three girls! Even though it was take out it still tasted very fresh after a 12 minute drive home. They were very kind in substituting some fish for us. The hostess and wait staff are very kind and welcoming. My companion had the salmon poke bowl and loved it. There are other tempting protein options and a choice of sauces. They also offer bento boxes that include a spring roll, miso soup and a choice of protein. It was hard to decide. The service was so friendly and helpful. We arrive 7:20 ish and we're seated roughly 20 mins later. Super nice waitress came to great the table and bought out water (it was warm but I digress). She gave us a sec to look over the menu but we had to ask for the cocktail listing. She returned and my niece ordered wine, and after looking over the menu her dad ordered a beer and a shot of vodka and I order pork gyoza for the table. Per the receipt the tab was opened at 8:03p so that maybe why the drinks came pretty slow. Some time later the appetizer arrived. Nothing to write home about, the flavors were just ok and I must say they were oddly small and not seared on both sides so they were lukewarm at best. Another 15 minutes or so go by and the ginger salad and miso soup arrived, salad dressing bland bland and watery from the lettuce I presume. The soup again wasn't over the top. I mean y'all really amped me up with this one, lol. We noticed our time waiting after that grew longer and longer. My bro ordered another beer while we all chatted. When the salad and soup came out our waitress said our food would be out shortly. And then when she came back with his beer she said it was a a lot of sushi orders and she apologized for the continued wait. My niece ordered a bento box that come with sushi and my daughter just ordered two rolls. My bro and I ordered hot entrees. But we continued to wait patiently. She came back to check in while continually apologizing and said I'm discounting your tab for the wait and mentioned some issue in the kitchen causing the additional wait. We finally got out food at 9:17p. Looking at the plate I was excited until I took my first bite. The sesame chicken was great in portion but was served lukewarm and the sauce was super sweet. The actual chicken was not seasoned and chewy to be breast meat as advertised, decent rice. My bro's dish was supposed to arrive hot on a hot plate even and nope, lukewarm. My niece and daughter were satisfied with their meals except for the lukewarm sesame chicken, we both loved the bento box presentation, tho. The waitress did give us the employee's discount but I thought maybe a manager would come by and apologize. Disappointing that the price of everything is going up but quality is going down. I get that most places are short staffed or if the kitchen is running behind...let us know before we sit so we can decide if we'd like to dine vs knowing you're overwhelmed but take orders that are at a "slow rush" and it affects the quality of your product. We have patronized Lucky AF at least 5 times since January. The ambiance is nice but dark. But during our last outing there we found out first hand why it's so dark inside the restaurant. This place has a cockroach infestation. Really, not one, not two, not three, but four huge cockroaches running along the restroom wall from the kitchen. What was concerning is that the staff was not bothered by the pest appearance. The manager tried to down play them as water bugs, as if even that wasn't an issue for an restaurant. Walking in we were told that is was an hour wait. That wasn't going to work based on our schedule. The walk-up bar was full, BUT we got super lucky with seats at the sushi bar. I had a great time watching the rolls being made while guessing which roll it was. For dinner we ordered 2 rolls and an entree. IT.WAS.AMAZING. -- We ordered the Joker Roll, the Harley Quinn Roll, and Chef Hai's Filet Mignon Pho. The filet in the pho was outstanding. So tender, even in the hot broth. The serving size was HUGE. We shared the rolls and the pho and STILL had enough to take home for lunch the next day. My favorite of the two rolls was the Joker. The goat cheese left a very smooth taste in your mouth. The Harley Quinn wasn't bad, just not my taste. So happy that we found our new favorite spot in town. Great food with great service. read more

What a fun new spot in Scott's Addition! We loved our date night experience here cannot wait to return. Can't comment toooo much on the interior and decor as we were seated at the bar which was toward the front but from what we could see, it was beautifully done. Dark and moody, hip and sleek throughout. The sushi was fresh and flavorful, we got a wide assortment of rolls and a tuna nacho app. The flavor combos are so unique and well-thought out! And the fun names just add to the experience. What really impressed us was the service. Our sever was so kind and attentive, offering a fresh mask wrapped in a napkin when my husband accidentally dropped his, extra sauce for our leftover rolls we were taking home so it wouldn't be a sticky mess, and made sure we were comfortable all around. The attention to detail here goes a long way and was very appreciated by us. The only "negatives" would be that there was a staff member cleaning behind the sushi bar not wearing a mask. She was in close proximity of us and other staff as well as all the food and fish openly out nearby. This made us a little uneasy... Also the estimated wait when we arrived was 90 minutes - actually indicative of a good spot but just a heads up as they do not take reservations for small parties! We grabbed a beer across the street and they wound up calling us in 45 min. Minus the unmasked staff member, we felt safe and enjoyed our dinner. I've been wanting to try this place since they opened. All the Richmond foodie folk on other social media platforms seemed to love them. In many ways my inability to try them is my fault. My default "GO-TO," just happens to be Asian restaurants almost always, to the chagrin, and eye-rolling of my family. Not because they don't love Asian cuisines, but rather because that's almost always going to be my 1st choice. So on lazy days or evenings, the "let's eat out" ritual takes place. "What are you making for...?" "I don't feel like making anything." "Where do you want to go?" "I don't know. Anywhere, and no Asian." So I very cleverly scheduled a his and her pedicure at spot we love and I'll review as well, then a late lunch on Saturday around 2:45, at a place of my choosing. Deal? DEAL! I finally tried this Scott's Addition gem of a spot and we are glad we did! First off parking was very easy this particular early afternoon. The vibe and general layout of this place is cool. I love that their drafts this day were mostly awesome local breweries. My wife loved both of her Smoking Jacket cocktails. Their cocktail program seems to be legit with all the creative and delicious looking and sounding drinks on their menu, and that I saw pass by. In my opinion, their Pho Beef Spring Roll app is worth the trip on it's own. We thoroughly enjoyed everything about the flavor and how it was served. The lobster dumpling app was as delicious. For me CUSTOMER SERVICE and attitude go a LOOONNNGG way. The last 2 years saw some necessary adjustments to the public's understanding of restaurant's plight to staff their locations and deal with mandates/restrictions, that brought a negative impact to their service levels. Many food bloggers and writers have expressed a frustration with current continued unacceptable service standards in some places, from their purview. If Lucky AF's service and attitude is an indication, they never were impacted or got "the memo" to allow their attitude or service to customers to take a dip. OUTSTANDING SERVICE FROM EVERYONE!! NO one walked by us upon entering or leaving, that did not politely greet us. This is outstanding training and or hiring practices. Don't get me wrong. Look, we are all humans and thus, ALL have bad days and every service business makes mistakes. It's how you handle it that matters! We ordered up their Release the Kraken sushi roll. (Their Top 20 Rolls is something we now plan to work our way through!) The roll we ordered did not seem to contain Octopus. The Spaniard in me LOVES Pulpo in all it's forms and I order it anywhere that serves it. The roll arrived and was delicious, but seemed to be missing this. Our server said, officered, and did ALL the right things. We were offered a replacement, or some comp'd octopus sashimi. We were happy about that, as we were promptly served some amazing and generous octopus. To our surprise, when our check arrived, our roll was also discounted. They made repeat customers when we walked in with the polite and enthusiastic greetings, and solidified that with this. PLEASE do the right thing in an instance like this! Our bill for the drinks and what we ate was $68. I left a $14 tip on the card, plus $10 cash. The 35 %-ish that this is was worth it and I hope it encouraged them to continue serving people at this high level. Our post pedi, heavy appetizers visit will now lead to hopefully many subsequent visits and tour of the rest of their menu. read more
