I'm honestly wary of any place that has a menu this gigantic. It's like a Japanese diner, and I just feel like it's impossible to do so many different things well. But it's a fact that Lucky Cat is a good time. They've got small plates (dubbed Tsunamitapas), ramen, donburi, sushi, soba, poke, soups, salads, robata, and Chiritorinabe which I believe is some sort of meat volcano. I've only been here the once so far, but I can tell you: 1. The cocktails are excellent. 2. The tsunamitapas are a good move. I thoroughly enjoyed the shio cabbage, the brussels sprouts, the spicy karaage, the gyoza, and more. 3. The robata (skewers) were hit or miss. The scallion was great, but the shortrib and the chicken thighs were both drastically underseasoned, and thus underwhelming. 4. The waitress hated us, and I don't even think we deserved it this time. We stopped by Lucky Cat a few weekends ago for dinner. The decor is cute and the atmosphere of the restaurant is super cozy! We started off with some mocktails and they were good. The front door greeter, bartenders and other staff are polite and friendly. We ordered the blistered shishito peppers, okonomiyaki and the creamy udon. Also, we drank Asahi and Sapporo. Unfortunately, the food did not fill me up. In hindsight , the okonomiyaki was covered in sauce and had little sustenance. The cream of udon was like a hug. I heard Lucky Cat can be a zoo after work, but when we showed up on a Sunday evening earlier this year, it wasn't too bad. You can easily fill any waiting time by glancing around at all the interesting things on the walls. Our server was a nice guy. The menu is large: both in the sense that it's filled with a zillion different options and also in that it's physically quite big. The oshinko ($8) was fine since it was just pickled vegetables, and the Brussels sprouts with sweet soy and balsamic ($10) were quite good. The ramen was a letdown though, being on the bland side. I got the tonkotsu shoyu ($20), and the broth needed to be jazzed up, almost like an ingredient or step was missed. And a guy was talking obnoxiously loud close by which wasn't Lucky Cat's fault but didn't help matters. read more

I was in the mood for some ramen and was looking for a place nearby for some late night eats. I love a good Yuzu Shio ramen and found Lucky Cat on Yelp. I visited Lucky Cat a little after 10pm on a weeknight. I was able to get squeezed in at one of the last seats at the bar. Sitting at the bar, service was minimal (standard bar service). Food was brought out quickly, but I thought the Yuzu Shio ramen ($18) was just okay. While there are yuzu peels in the broth, the yuzu flavor didn't really pack a punch. They also use thin noodles which didn't absorb a lot of flavor from the broth. The bowl did include two hefty pieces of chashu and the egg was perfectly cooked. Spinach, menma (bamboo shoots), and a generous amount of scallions were also included. The place was pretty happening on a Thursday night. The late night hours (open until 2am) definitely contribute to that. Decor is kitschy. They have a giant lucky cat in the back and a tv playing Asian movies behind the bar, surrounded by stacks of DVDs. This is a nice place to get drinks with friends. We were able to get a same day table for 6 people fairly easily. I really liked my yuzu shio ramen with chicken broth. The broth was nicely flavored and light, and I prefer the thin noodles. The spinach was a nice touch and the pork pieces were not too fatty. Their appetizers were also good, including the tako wasabi and some kind of fried cheese dumpling--and the okonomiyaki was the bomb. I didn't try the fried chicken katsu which my husband said was just okay. They have a bunch of cool cocktails on the menu that were anime themed. First time, great experience. Place is quaint with still a number of tables. Almost like a bar and mess hall feel. The menu is quite extensive and has a variety of options for any palate. Being open until 2am especially serving Ramen you're going places! This izakaya has been around for a good while and from the outside, you wouldn't really expect much. From the overdone anime decor to the Naruto movies playing on TV, you might think the food here would be standard izakaya fare or mediocre. In fact however, it's a standout at least for one dish. Across the street from Tomi Jazz, the atmosphere there of course is a lot better but the food here is cheaper and you don't need to wait online for 40 minutes so this place has a lot of pluses. I don't know exactly remember which sake I have had here but they serve it the traditional way in a matsu where it is overflowing/pouring into said wooden stone. Whatever sake I had was good and I think it was maybe $17 or $18 and I'm 99% sure it was on the richer end and was probably a Honzojo or Daijingo as I don't like the sweeter sakes in general. The best menu item here is a particularly outstanding version of Mentaiko Pasta/明太子パスタ which is a good five times better than Tomi. Back when I was here last, it was $17 and now it is $19 but I think it's still more than worth it. Mentaiko refers to a spicy cod roe mixed into the pasta and they make an outstanding version here. It is just fishy enough, just spicy enough, and just creamy enough being one of the most balanced versions of this wafu pasta classic. The little bit of seaweed on top is a nice added bonus adding a bit more of a seafood flavor and an extra texture and the pasta is cooked nicely. The only place with a comparable version in the entirety of the city that I have found is Izakaya Fuku and that's all the way in Jackson Heights and nothing has come close in Manhattan. Outside of that notable pasta of all things, the food here is good to fine. The fried dishes are alright and I tried one other noodle dish before which is decent. In terms of yakitori/grilled skewers, the Bacon With Mochi for $6 is a bit much but was tasty with good mochi texture while the Meatball/Tsukune for $5 is a bit different but not in a good way. They serve two to an order and it's smaller than usual so it lacks some texture by comparison. I also think the sauce for the meatball isn't as good at this spot so if you're looking for a better version nearby, go to Izakaya Toriya. If everything was as good as the mentaiko pasta, I'd easily give this place a 5. But it's closer to a 4 overall. read more

This spot used to be my favorite when it first just opened up. It was my top spot to eat at. But after having a bad experience with the service, my friends and I will not be returning again. The server was incredibly rude despite my friends and I being respectful in ordering our food. She grew annoyed and said "Anything else?" in a rude tone when my friend asked for a fork and an extra straw. She then proceeded to take the payment without giving back the change and acted like she didn't know until I asked her for my change.
