She ordered the #9 combo which was BBQ pork..sweet and sour chiclen..cashew chicken..and pork fried rice. I had the #7 which was the same except for fried shrimp and vegetable chicken. This is my new go-to place for Chinese food around here. Which I haven't had in a while, because quite frankly, most of the stuff I've had around here is terrible. Mushy, overcooked, flavorless. With beef dishes, it seems like more often than not, the beef is somehow....battered? Maybe not battered, but pounded into an odd texture? It's weird, and I hate it. But, not here! My friend and I had the lunch special, me with the beef and vegetables, her with the....I forget what, but it looked good. My dish was EXCELLENT. As were the accompaniments, ie rice, soup, crab puffs or what I know as crab rangoon. Super fast and friendly service. And I think the total was something ridiculous like $13.50. I was craving Egg Foo Young one day. Yelped Egg Foo Young and up popped Lucky Garden. We ordered Cashew Chicken, the special (Egg Foo Young) and Orange Chicken. My first bite of Egg Foo Young , I had a foodgasm OMG!! It was so good. On a return trip, again it was awesome! On yet another trip we tried Egg Foo Young with chicken, it arrived with chicken on top, not within, and it still was good. Best Chineese Food in Salem. Had lunch today with a friend. Service was fast, friendly, and consistent. I had the General Tso's and my friend had the Mongolian beef. Both were delicious and were delivered to our table quickly. The soup was flavorful and piping hot. No joke, it was almost boiling when delivered to the table, so be sure to blow on it before putting it into your mouth. The neighborhood is a bit sketchy; but, the place has a good security system and you should be fine! We enjoyed it enough that we may be "Lucky" enough to make this our weekly haunt. read more

I really wanted to love this place due to the tremendous reviews but ultimately my experience was less than pleasant. The lack of empathy for waiting 50 mins on a togo order is absolutely unacceptable.. They made the effort to call out the delivery orders, so I thought they would give us the same courtesy. At 50 mins, I just wanted to see the status of our order since we only ordered Orange Chicken and Spring Rolls... My order was finished and waiting on the counter. I have no idea how long our food was waiting but we received a very cold order. I don't want a comp or free items but a genuine apology would have been sufficient. This place is so good! I love the sesame tofu and crab puffs but they have so many things I haven't tried yet- it's hard to decide whether to get my fave again or try something new. This place is okay, the service was really great for a Chinese restaurant. They're always checking up on you, and extremely friendly. The menu is fairly easy to navigate, not so much if you're used to seeing them in chinese. The menu is only in english and the utensils given were forks, so it felt slightly americanized. The food was a bit on the salty side, which was a comment on my dad's end. That was surprising to me since he loves salt, but it was a tad over powering. The milk tea was also very sweet, but it seemed to be made of powder. I got the salt and pepper shrimp that wasn't kind of reminded me of calamari, it was nice and crispy, and didn't have as much salt since it wasn't covered in sauces, but plenty of onions and peppers which I liked! We have always received excellent food and service from this place, until tonight. We arrived about 4pm, not a busy time of day. We had tea and noticed it was different right away, quite bitter. Hubby's bbq pork was like rubber, must have been reheated a time or two. His sweet & sour chicken had a tasteless breading on it, no spices at all! Rice & veggies were the same. My noodles were ok but tasted like the chicken had been microwaved. So disappointing..we will maybe give it one more try, but not for some time. We didn't recognize any of the staff, thought maybe they had changed owners or something. As I said, we have had many, many meals there and never had a bad experience like tonight. read more

Let's face it, in Olympia WA, where I live the Chinese Cantonese food sucks. The restaurant scene in general sucks. We have more tattoo parlors than good restaurants. So when I ventured to Salem for the eclipse I was on a mission. After eating the same food for days my gracious hosts had prepared in advance for our convenience I was ready for something different. Something local. My litmus test for a good Cantonese restaurant is the Subgum Chicken. Since it wasn't on the lunch menu I made a special request and with a smile and prompt reply they said "no problem!" What you need to know about this place is that THEY CARE. They take pride in their service and their product. When the meal came it was a thing of beauty. The lunch specials are only $6.95! Well plated, crisp, hot, fresh, in season vegetables (zucchini stood out) expertly chopped with endless chunks of tender, marinated chicken. The egg drop soup was worthy, but the egg roll's contents were stringy and hard to chew. But they had me at the Subgum. The seasoning was spot on too. The only improvement would have been topping it with sautéed almonds that some Cantonese restaurants do with Subgum. On a second visit (of course I had to go back) I got full orders of each Subgum and Mongolian beef. The Mongolian beef was not as saucy as more commonly found and instead of topping it with crispy white rice noodles they bury the noodles in the little sauce there is and it becomes lost. The sauce was very pedestrian in flavor, this was not a stand out dish. Portion sizes for both full meal take outs were robust, often times you get shorted on take out portions, not here. Bottom line, I go out of my way for places like this that offer enthusiastic service with a smile and consistently good authentic Asian food. I will return! read more

I grew up on the island of O'ahu, Hawai'i along with many many Chinese restaurants. After moving from my home state to Oregon a year and a half ago, I have not eaten any restaurant Chinese food. I missed it. So I Googled and found Lucky Garden. It had a better rating than a closer place from my home and for my 1st taste of Chinese food after so long I wanted the best that was close. Well let me tell ya, our selection was Lemon Chicken, Shrimp Canton, Beef and Broccoli, Mushu Pork and Shrimp Chow Mein. It tasted just like being home in Hawai'i. Loved everything. It had the flavors I so miss very much. I don't know if other Chinese restaurants here makes their dishes the same or better or not close and it will be hard to try another after Lucky Garden. I guess I will eventually have to find out. For now, when my family comes to visit ( they are still and will forever live in Hawai'i) I will take them or order take-out from Lucky Garden. We came here based on the other reviews, and they are right on! This is by far the best Chinese restaurant I've been to in the Salem area! For our dinner, we had the Mongolian beef and the moo shu chicken. The Mongolian beef was spiced just right, more like Mongolian crack it was so delicious. The moo shu chicken was also good, a little smokey flavored which is unusual, but not bad at all, it added a uniqueness to the moo shu. They also serve green tea, a nice touch. The place is clean, and the servers (owners?) are very very nice. As an added bonus, my wife played the video slot machines in the back and won $27, which more than paid for the entire meal! Gravy on an already good meal experience! Thank God too, because that girl likes to gamble...it could have gone entirely the other way. read more
