Wow, another local gem.... I had a day date at the sip and paint art studio down the street, stopped here for breakfast. Luckys kind of reminds me of one of those local diners that draws all of the neighborhood seniors wanting to get out for the day. My family and I always leave there happy, full and with a doggy bag. they have excellent breakfast ( that you could even eat for dinner ) great coffee too!!! awesome daily specials with yummy home made soups. In the summer when its really hot, I like to get the Julianne salad, it comes with soup and dinner rolls, its enough for 2 people. I went here for dinner with my youngest son last night, had my favorite Alpine burger (bacon mushroom burger with swiss cheese ) came with soup and I had a combo of onion rings and fries.. ALSO came with a a side of fresh romaine lettuce an tomato and slaw, my son stole my soup.. my son also had a kiddie cheese burger and fries, which we could not finish, so we took it home. I have been eating at The Lucky Grill for over 20 yrs. It has changed hands a couple of times. Food and service have been steadily going down hill. Today my soup had pieces of old bread in it. Went to this place on a Sunday morning and though it was busy we got seated and served right away. Our order came super quickly and everything was delicious! I normally complain; however since my family & I frequent this place after mass @ OLV practically every Sunday mind you the 1 star is not for the food it is from the service we recieved from one particular waitress "Rosie" is deplorable, no matter if it's 6 of us or 12 when she is our waitress she has an attitude. Having worked in the service business myself I understand you may have a bad day, but nevertheless a majority of income is from your tips. She has attitude when you ask her about something that is missing from your order your order her response is she can only do 3 things at once! Thank God for Alex at least we got our drinks that we waiting for 20 minutes for. When after sitting waiting for our checks for 1/2 hour we decided to go to the register and get them. When the cashier asked my sister how everything she told her the same and Rosie was standing there and began to argue with her about the her service. Could be much better if they didn't spread themselves so thin with such an extensive menu. They seem to be shooting more for variety over quality. For instance, the breakfasts. The skillets and omelets have very little filling, the hash browns are disgustingly undercooked (just a pile of bland, steamed potato shreds with no browning or crispiness whatsoever) and packed so tightly for delivery that the food is steamed into mushiness by the time it's delivered (the toast is softer than it was before it was toasted.) The turkey club has great potential, but why even bother toasting the bread if it and the lettuce just end up with the same consistency as the mayo? If you eat there, you might get a better meal, but avoid delivery. read more

I've only ever ordered from Lucky from work for breakfast delivery. I have never tried any other items other than breakfast and I have never been inside the restaurant, so this review is based on breakfast delivery only. The skirt steak and eggs always comes perfectly cooked and the price is great! I always order the steak medium-rare with over easy eggs with whole wheat toast. I add feta cheese and onions in my hash browns and a cup of fresh squeezed orange juice. My total bill comes to $20 plus tip for delivery. I visted luck Grill almost every Sunday for the Cream of Chicken rice soup. It is almost a cult following for many. Although there food is top notch. They have changed the Cream of Chicken rice recipe. I am used to it being not to thick, not to thin, lots of Chicken and Chicken flavor, with a hint of lemon. But latley it hasent been. I thought on my last 3 Sunday visits, maybe the cheif had a bad day our, was on vacation. Well, I asked. and that wasnt the case. Be warned! Lucky Grill's cream of chicken soup is now: Thick like wall paper paste, tastes like flour not chicken. Also, now there must tie a string on the chicken, and pull it out before serving. This is just a great little diner...my family goes here all the time and my little girl loves it! The waitresses know us all, and they treat us like famly. They give you too much food, and the sandwiches always come with soup. Usually the soup is good, and the salads are always fresh and crunchy. In the last year I purchased a set of three Groupons for Lucky Grill when I moved into the neighborhood. I really wanted to like this place. I was excited to have a diner nearby and was hoping it could become a regular place for me. The menu was very large and had a good amount of choices to choose from. The reviews on Yelp also sounded good. It seemed so promising. Each time I came here the food was disappointing. Cheap iceberg lettuce for the entirety of a salad, vegetable sides that were obviously from a bag of frozen vegetables, flavorless skillets, overcooked and dried out meat, overcooked poached eggs, watered down split pea soup. Eventually I gave up on this place. I'm not real picky when it comes to restaurants, but it's disappointing when I feel like I could do a much better job. The service was pretty all right but couldn't make up for the food. Sorry Lucky Grill, I really wanted to like you but the poor quality food isn't worth close to the price you want for it. Ordered here for DELIVERY for the first time on Sunday for breakfast. I can't say anything bad about it. I ordered online (super-easy), used a credti card and received an email confirmation. The food arrived in less than an hour. Before trying the food I was already impressed that I found a BREAKFAST DELIVERY place - HEAVEN! My husband had the Italian Skillet, I had the Irish Skillet. Total was $20 (wtih delivery & tip). We both liked our meals, I even got 2 meals out of mine the portion was large. It was as good as you expect for diner food. I went to work and about lunch time I was so ready for my lunch when I realized, my sandwich was on white toast, ok no biggie it's still bread. But then I had no bread for my soup, just some butter and crackers .. luckily I was full so I didn't need it.. couple days go by and I decided to come in for another Togo order because that sandwich hit the spot! Onion rings were delicious too, but man the soup was delicious!! This time I ordered a Caesar salad, comes with soup as well. So I chose the navy bean .. took about ten minutes. I went to work and about lunch time I opened my bag up, I got the bread for my soup and I also had a bunch of salad.. I'm talking MORE THAN I CAN EAT. It was awesome! And it was less than $10!! I even brought some leftovers home and shared with two other people. That's how much salad it was. Definetly not about the quantity but more the quality. So I don't mind the forgotten bread for my soup- that's no biggie. What it a biggie is the taste and man oh man do I taste all flavors. If I could give this place negative 5 stars, I would. My family and I went there on a Friday morning at 10:00. We had to seat ourselves because the waitstaff were too "busy" to do so. I watched one waitress stroll around the restaurant as though she had all the time in the world and nothing to do. Our waitress seemed nice enough, we told her we were in a rush and put our order in almost immediately. Then we waited...and waited...and waited. We watched other patrons come into the restaurant sit and get served. At 10:35 we walked out. On the way out (due to the fact that I am honest person) I stopped to pay for my coffee, the waitress after ignoring us for 30 minutes, actually charged me for the coffee. I live around the area, so I've been here a couple of times. All the times I've gone have been great. Food always comes fast, I don't wait so long to be seat, and the food is nice and cooked. But today I decided to called for pick up and order a chicken breast on pita with fries and they forgot the cucumber sauce!! That's the main part of the chicken and pita. We came here on Sunday with our four kids after a laid-back contemporary church service at Park Community Church -- we had gotten a Yelp email update on this place, and like the review we read, we have passed this place many times and never once thought to enter. We were pleasantly surprised at the food, with great omelettes, breakfast items, and super corned beef hash. The atmosphere was light and airy and service was good (even though it was quite busy with all tables filled). The 2 stars are for their delivery service. This is my go-to diner in the neighborhood and I tried delivery for the first time this morning. The soup of the day was not listed on line (I remember seeing signs in the restaurant saying look up our daily soups online) so I had to call and decided to just place the order over the phone. But after placing my order, I was told they don't take credit cards over the phone so I had to cancel and order online. The delivery was fairly quick but they forgot the soup. Great little diner that will pass you by like the state of Conn. on a road trip. In a small strip mall with several failed businesses, but don't be fooled. This place has a large selection of breakfast, lunch, and dinner items. Its what you'd expect of a diner with a friendly and VERY helpful staff. Water is always filled, ice tea always filled, and the bus staff is very attentive. Expect to come out full, they serve lots. It's so hard to find a good skillet these days. Mayfair/Jefferson Park/Portage Park has a dearth of good breakfast places, but this is one of the better ones. Food is consistently very good, though service can be a touch hit-or-miss depending upon how busy they are (I think the cramped space hurts them at times). Cute waitresses on the weekends also, though I'm mature enough to not let that influence my review any more than half a star, one star at the most. Cheap and good. read more
