I feel like everyone thinks about getting highlights at least once in their lifetime and today just so happened to be the day that I decided to do so for the very first time. I had my fair share of just "okay" hair salon experiences so I wanted to find something worth spending a little more money on and after seeing all the good reviews, as well as coming across several tiktoks here and there talking about "Lucky Hair Salon" in Millbrae and how good they were I made an appointment. Booking an appointment was easy! I went on their website; picked what I wanted to get done, picked a stylist and a time slot. After that, my appointment was set. I ended up picking Rain as my stylist. When I arrived I was greeted by 2 gentlemen; one of them being Rain and later on more gentlemen came out from the back, assuming those were the other stylists. Rain and the others mostly speak mandarin so there was a little bit of a language barrier but Google Translate and my elementary mandarin got us through. Don't worry if you can't speak mandarin though, he'll still be able to understand you through simple English, Google translate and reference photos. The salon itself was very clean and comfortable, they played music at a low volume so it was mostly quiet but a comfortable quiet. Oh and there's free parking directly outside, I was lucky enough to snag a parking spot just 2 doors away from the salon right as someone was leaving so that worked out great for me. After showing him what I wanted he quickly got to work. He started by sectioning my hair and I must say he did such a good job because the highlights came out so well! I am very happy with the results especially because this is my first time getting highlights too! I can officially say I have found a great hair dresser and I will be coming back to Rain for all my hair needs. The prices are reasonable for the amount of time and care they put into doing your hair. Rain is great and I can tell many people think so too because he ended up helping a couple of other people while I was waiting with foil in my hair and they all left looking fantastic! Two stars. I came in for a trim, and it felt like the hairstylist just kept cutting. He wasn't checking if both sides were even and it felt like he was cutting with no rhyme or reason. But while the cut itself was okay - the salon itself was not clean. It seemed like the tools used, scissors, trimmers and brushes were just placed back into their cubbies rather than being sanitized in between clients. Also, there was hair everywhere. They don't clean up the hair in between clients, so it wasn't a pleasant experience sitting in a chair in that environment. They also make it seem like tipping is mandatory. I came in a few minutes early for my appointment and wasn't seated until about 30 minutes later. While the stylist was talented, friendly and did a good job with my hair, the overall experience was extremely frustrating due to the amount of time spent waiting. For a root lift, root touch-up, and haircut, I was at the salon for approximately 4.5+ hours. Much of that time seemed to be due to the stylist juggling multiple clients at once and continuing to take walk-in appointments. While I understand salons can get busy, clients' time should also be respected. The constant waiting between steps left me sitting in the chair for long stretches, hoping I hadn't been forgotten. No service should require spending more than half the day at the salon unless expectations are clearly communicated beforehand. To put things into perspective, my daughter arrived at 1:30 PM for a 1:40p appointment for highlights and a trim. As I write this review, it is after 7:40 PM and she is still there, nearly 6 hours and counting for a relatively standard appointment. I had high hopes for this salon because the stylists are clearly skilled and kind. However, the lack of time management and overbooking makes it difficult to justify returning. Great talent can only go so far when customers are expected to spend most of their day waiting. read more

Tom was incredibly friendly, listened carefully to what I wanted, and recommended coloring my hair darker to achieve a more natural look. I let my experience sit for a few weeks before reviewing. I'll give it 5 stars for the genuine fact this was the best haircut I've gotten in the Bay Area since moving here, with some caveats noted below. Pros: Haircut's legit, and legit for thick Asian hair kinda way. I asked for a layered medium shag (expressed in pics, I don't think telling them that term would have been clear) and they did a great job. The haircut has been low maintenance , easy to style and even looks good / feels light in hot and humid weather. Good attention to texturizing the ends and adding good movement. Would totally go back to get this cut maintained. Price is more than reasonable for quality of work. Store is small, basic but clean and looks fairly recently renovated Cons: All the parking nearby is 2 hours max. There were definitely cops staked out in the closest muni lot. I parked way past that time at my own risk on a nearby street - not sure how this is supposed to work with longer hair procedures. Definitely come with a strong opinion on exactly what you want and as an added bonus, be prepared to express yourself in mandarin or canto. Bring pictures, different views of the cut (back, side, front) I thought they were just ok with hair color and seemed to really struggle with lifting dark - colored medium brown hair to medium ash brown (like, no more than a level 6). I've had different salons go from my normal hair to dark ash blonde highlights in one go and fewer hours in the chair. I found it bizarre they had trouble with that and said my hair was too dark to start. Service took a while and they asked if I wanted a different haircutter or wait. Obviously yes I wanted this selected salonist and I had an appointment, so it was puzzling why I had to wait. read more

I honestly don't know who keeps questioning Amy's skills or saying the photos are AI-generated, because I'm literally a real customer who drove almost two hours just to see her. Amy did my haircut, color, and styling, and I'm genuinely very happy with the result. Before starting, she actually listened to what I wanted, gave me professional suggestions based on my hair texture and face shape, and didn't rush the process at all. The color came out natural but still noticeable, and the curls/styling looked exactly like the kind of clean, textured look I was hoping for. She also took photos for me afterward, and they turned out so good that I honestly understand why people might think they look "too good to be real" -- but that's just the result of good hair, good styling, and good lighting. I was the person sitting in the chair, and the result was 100% real. For anyone looking for a stylist who actually knows how to cut, color, and style Asian hair, I would definitely recommend Amy. The salon is modern, clean, and chic. Amy is meticulous and attentive as always. She immediately understood the inspo photo and asked a few questions to confirm details before starting. The appointment took about 90 minutes, with nearly 40 minutes dedicated to styling, so if you're on a tight schedule, it's worth letting her know. I have mixed opinions on this newly opened salon. Amy, my stylist, did a beautiful cut with layers and face framing pieces. She trimmed off split ends and demonstrated with a photo of my hair that I had very damaged hair from a prior bleach job a year ago (in a different salon). She did suggest a repairing treatment with discount (as they have a new opening promo) but I declined at this time. However, while I liked the cut, she reparted my hair despite me explaining my natural lay is slightly off center and I will be styling my hair that way myself so I feel the cut will be asymmetrical once I do it at home. That being said, her boss, who I am aware would like the salon to be promoted well, was a bit forward about us reviewing the salon on the spot, and my husband was not able to politely decline to review for his cut. The salon frontman was polite and courteous but kept distracting Amy by policing my cut not even two feet from me, and chatting with her, to the point that they exited the salon during my cut! And came back a minute or so later! I arrived for a noon appointment and did not leave until 1:30pm from a nearly empty salon. I appreciate the care Amy did for my hair but I am very put off by the service disruption and supervision. It made me worried she would not be able to focus on just me during my service. They made a point to hand me her card and a small snack, and were very polite. I am willing to return again but I am not 100% pleased with how my first visit turned out. read more

I spontaneously decided to get a haircut because my hair has been damaged from too much bleaching and found Lucky Hair Salon on Yelp. Thank you to Rain for giving my hair life again and a similar cut to what I showed him! Although there was a language barrier, we were able to communicate through a translation app. I had someone else wash my hair and I wouldn't say it was the best hair wash I've had at a salon. However, I appreciated they had beds that allow you to fully lay down while getting your hair washed. Overall, the staff were friendly and the place was clean and bright! read more

I went to this new Millbrae store yesterday for the first time to get a hair cut and coloring. Having been to two other hair salons in Millbrae, this one stands the highest quality! Amy is a very talented hair stylist! She is very knowledgeable about what hair styles (layers, bangs) and colors fit you the best. My hair turned from black to natural brown without bleaching. I'm very impressed by the natural and youthful look she has done on my hair! This salon is pretty popular and fully booked (Or overbooked, I think). The wait time can be long even with appointment. The stylist can be doing two customers' hair at the same time. I would suggest that booking an appointment in an afternoon or evening when you are fully available. It would also allow the stylists sufficient time to make your hair beautiful :-) read more
