Overall the market is fine, but beware of their meat counter. They engage in a variety of shady practices including but not limited to: mislabeling meat, hiding flaws, and leaving so much fat on the meat that up to 25% of the weight that you bought isn't meat, it's extra fat that you have to take time to remove and throw away. If they'll cheat on labeling, cheat on weight/fat, and cheat on hiding flaws, what else will they cheat on? Edit: In a comment Lucky customer service asks me to contact them and provides a link. The link is to a form that requires a lot of personal information to be able to submit the form. If they *really* wanted my input, they wouldn't demand enough information to enable identity theft just to be allowed to contact them. Compared to Safeway, the lines at Lucky's move much quicker! They also have a lot more vegan selection than Safeway. Other than that, they're no good. I have purchased fruit from this location several times, such as strawberries, raspberries, etc. The last few times I've purchased fruit, it has been MOLDY! Check the fruit before you buy it. One time I checked all the strawberry containers and they all had mold on them. Also, the workers at the Deli/ Food area do not use gloves! Once the lady was taking out pasta and got the sauce all over her thumb and she just wiped her BARE thumb on the container and gave it to me. SHE WASN'T WEARING GLOVES! That's super disgusting. I did not end up purchasing it. Lucky's needs to definitely go over their food & health ethics! *This wasn't an occasional event, they never wear gloves. read more

Not sure if it's cause I tend to go in during rush hours or if it really is just the fact that they don't have enough employees at the registers, but it seems like there's always a long line. They have that policy "Three's a crowd" in which if there are more than 3 people in a line, they are supposed to open up another register. Every time I've came here, there were always more than 3 people in a line, sometimes even up to 6 parties. It would be several minutes later (10-15min) until they do eventually open up another register.. basically when the customers start looking around wondering when they're going to get another employee on the register and/or the customers start looking impatient. read more

The store was clean and well-organized, which was about the only positive. We rolled up to the front with $170 of groceries, and our checker paged the courtesy clerk to come bag them. When he was almost finished ringing us up, a manager came over and the checker asked the manager where the courtesy clerk was ("She said she was busy, but can you find out what she's busy doing?" I think he felt that nothing was too busy to help a customer, which I appreciate.) The manager shrugged, helped bag ONE bag of groceries, and then walked off. When the checker was done with the sale, he started bagging our purchase. I didn't want to be there forever, so I posted where the courtesy clerk should have been and bagged a bunch myself. I commented that I felt like I was at a Food 4 Less. It is amazing to me that they were so short staffed on Mother's Day, at 6pm. Happy Mother's Day to me, huh? This is probably the worst supermarket that I've ever been in. Unfortunately, it's also the closest one to my current location (and is a part of why I'm moving out of Hayward!), so I've been in it far too often...particularly after 9 pm, when the TJ's is closed. 1. The customer service here is TERRIBLE. I waited over half an hour (TWICE!) at the customer service center to purchase an money order. I flagged down 3 different employees, all of whom told me that "help is coming" while walking away from me. It would have been so much faster to just go to the post office. Even when I'm not at the service counter, the employees--from the cashiers down to the managers--seem to lack professionalism. Yelling at an employee in front of a customer, for exam, is simply not ok. 2. The lines are often ridiculous. The last time I was in the store (in the late evening, hardly rush hour), there were EIGHTEEN people in one for cash register. When they finally opened another register, there was practically a riot--lots of pushing, shoving, cussin'--as customers tried to get into the new line. Which brings me to... 3. The clientele, from my experience, has been less than ideal. Lots of homeless individuals (though they rarely cost trouble), lots of individuals who see the store as a place to vent their private feuds. (Twice--out of perhaps a half a dozen visits--I've seen screaming matches start when one person perceives that another person looked at him/her "the wrong way"). I wouldn't penalize the store if I could avoid the unsavory types, but when the lines are so long (which only fuels tempers), there's no way to avoid dealing with the other customers. 4. The produce is both overpriced and often not very fresh. There are simply cheaper places to buy far better quality produce. read more

Came here to grab some stuff for the potluck I was going to and MAN, I couldn't really find anything! The lemons were all gross and moldy! Ewww! How else are we going to take the Chocolate Cake shot?! Why isn't the lunch meat in the same section as the cheese and stuff? STRANGE. I was trying to find the sliced breads and couldn't seem to locate it. I walked around the whole store and the only breads I found was cinnamon raisin bagels at the end of one of the aisles. There is a lack of supply when it comes to Fried Chicken in the downtown Hayward area. I live right off foothill and there is no KFC, Churches Chicken, or Popeyes. One day I craving Fried Chicken and for some reason I went to Lucky and wahhhh lahhhhhhhh! They have an eight piece family meal that comes with either potatoes salad, macaroni salad or coleslaw. Also, the family meal comes with Hawaiian dinner rolls or corn bread. We went with the potato salad and corn bread which paired deliciously with the Fried Chicken. All this food under $20 is a steal. Along with the home cooked rice, sriracha sauce, and some lemon. Yup...this is definitely a 'Win' in my books. read more

THIS IS MY MARKET!!! The customer service here is PERFECT! Needed help one evening during Easter and started to describe what I needed to this young clerk. I never heard of them before, but apparently we needed them for cooking dinner. I described them to the clerk and he KNEW EXACTLY what I wanted "CLAVOS!" Not only did he find me what I wanted, but he asked if I used them often. I replied to him, "No, just tonight". So he told me to follow him and brought me to another section of the store where I could find a smaller amount for just that evening. He didn't 'just point' or tell me the aisle number like some of the veteran customer service people there (and you ladies know who you are), he actually TOOK ME THERE and asked additional questions to ensure I got what I needed. I try and avoid this Lucky as much as I can. The traffic inside the center sucks! The last few times I went here there is usually someone dealing drugs and some guy with what looks like a hooker standing in the middle of the parking lot. It is convenient and right near the 880 and 280 intersection. There is a Safeway and Walgreens up Jackson a little bit, which I would recommend spending the extra time to head there. The parking lots are way better, and I find the prices and selection better. read more

So I come here all the time to buy groceries and I like to use their bathroom to wash my hands in case I get something to eat. It used to be easy to use their bathrooms until they put in sum combination lock that requires you to ask an employee to open the bathroom for you like your a child. This place sucks read more

Grocery stores are challenging enough in Hayward....but we prefer this over Safeway since Safeway is understaffed and under stocked. HOWEVER, there is one extremely rude old ball of negativity . I've been shopping at this store for far too long. 2 issues that are going to force me to try and shop elsewhere. 1) Their beer case is far too warm (45-50 degrees). I've spoke to many clerks and the store manager. Nothing changes. 2) Purchased some chicken thighs onsale that were not name brand, When I took them out of the bag, I noticed a bad odor. Took the chicken back and spoke to a clerk. He was aware of the problem. Got my money back from the store manager, and he was aware of the problem. Two days later, the same brand is being sold as if there was nothing wrong! They apparently have little concern for whether or not someone gets salmonella poisoning. I am now going out of my way to shop elsewhere. read more

This place gets a boost from how bad Safeway is across the street. This Lucky isn't the cleanest most well stocked store but it is efficient... the customer service is friendly and helpful. The trick to going to this store is try to go between 10pm and midnight - it is never busy during those times and the checkout guy with the glasses is super friendly. The Safeway across the street was my go to for a long time until their lines started to get ridiculously long -- I still prefer the "freshness" of the deli at Safeway but I refuse to spend a dime there after they continually wasted my time with 7 - 10 person long lines. You won't have to deal with that stuff here at Lucky... Will be back! read more

My family and I are loyal shoppers at this Lucky. We get a lot of our dry goods at Target because it's cheaper, but for our produce and stuff we come here. Now, we are not only LOYAL shoppers, we are HAPPY loyal shoppers! I bought some raspberries recently, and when I got them home they were bad. Not a huge deal, it happens sometimes. So I dug out my receipt and headed back. The manager was SUPER nice. He didn't even look at my receipt, he just assumed I was telling the truth about when I'd bought them. He walked with me to the produce section, and when we found they were out of raspberries he offered me a substitution. I wound up with blueberries, which were more expensive. I didn't have to go through the checkout or anything, he just walked me out. We always love shopping at this store because of the meat counter and the great deals they offer from time to time. Now we can add great customer service to the package :) One thing to be aware of - when I go there during the day during the week, which I try to do as often as I can, I ALWAYS have to wait in line. There is never more than one cashier open at a time, and there are always 3-5 people in line. I'm not really sure why this is, you would think that if such a great store knows they have this midday traffic they would adjust accordingly, but they don't, so I don't know. It's certainly not enough to make me shop anywhere else, or even remove a star, but I do make sure I plan accordingly. By the way - the cashiers are ALL GREAT in my experience. I guess I just look at it differently than other people. If I have to wait a little longer in line because the person ahead of me is getting extra help I find that a good thing - means when I need help, I'll probably get it, regardless of the length of the line. They do need more baggers tho :( read more

Lucky was also the nearest grocery store near us when I still lived at home with my parents. Lucky is quick and efficient. But once that I've moved out, this particular Lucky grocery store is exceptionally quick and efficient and the customer service is fantastic! I was in and out if the store in less than 15 minutes, considering it was my first time in there. Straight to the point when it comes to my shopping list and the clerks knew immediately which lanes for me to go to! read more

Good location, perfect for last minute groceries shopping, they open late at night but they usually have only was cashier or two at the most so the lines get big at night. The self check out are closed after 9 or 10 pm. There's couple of homeless people waiting around by the front door, kind of scary. I did get a bag of groceries stolen off my shopping cart i wasn't paying attention as i walked around the car to open the trunk i turn back and i see a homeless guy with my bag. Couldn't be mad he probably needed the food more than me, but i did learn my lesson not shopping again late at nigt. read more

My review is strictly for the deli alone. Today is the second day in a row we have been to the deli to purchase chicken only to find the counter almost completely empty. Today I was told by the person who is behind the counter that "she is the closing person and she's not frying anything " it is 4:45 pm. So I asked to speak to the acting store manager (David) who tried his best to resolve my issue. He came back and said they could cook me some chicken strips but it would be an hour wait. A HOUR to cook four chicken strips because he had to call some one from the bakery to help her because she is "stressed out"!! To add insult to this terrible customer service there was not a single customer at the deli and the person behind the counter was leaning on the counter drinking a soda. Totally unacceptable customer service! I will follow up tomorrow with the regular store manager but I will no longer purchase anything from this deli! In fact I don't think Luckys will get my grocery business anymore. read more

I came in yesterday into this Lucky Grocery store and i did not have a $10.00 or $20.00 to play lotto in their vending machine. The vending machine does not give change. I thought i had small bills and i did not. I asked the employee standing at the self check out if he could break a $100.00 bill. "He said you need to go to one of the cashiers and they will break it for you. So i waited patiently while the cashier helped the other customers before me. I asked both cashiers if they could break a $100.00 bill and they could not. Now i am thinking "Yeah right"As big as ThisSupermarket is they can not break $100.00 bill. So i grab a Mentos for 79 cents (which i did not want) and waited at the self checkout. Wow the self checkout csn break a $100.00 but not the cashiers. This is bad customer service if someone needs change and the only way to break a large bill they have to buy something. read more

i always lived this location even though its on the expensive side i dont do my full shopping here. HOWEVER, i do come and go to the deili and grab there pre made sandwiches which are super good! and there fruit. OMG there fruit you dont have to worry about picking up any bad fruit every single one of there pieces are not only prefect looking (at least the times that i do go and buy) but the way that they tasted its even more so l. and you dont have to worry about looking around making sure the fruit isnt already bad or bruised or anything. i give this store a 5 there always clean there fruit is always perfect. and they have everything in order and where they suppose to be at. i never see anything really out of stock. the only tjing that i have a problem with is there lines 2 chasiers and then a self check out isnt good enough they need more than that at least the time when its like rush hour and stuff read more

I was in desperate need of finding dry ice for barbecue. I had no idea where to look I called many businesses and they said they don't know who sells dry ice. Then I called the supplier who referred me to Luckys and yes they have dry ice! It's around $2 per pound can't beat that price. i stopped by the pharmacy after having a horrible experience at walgreens pharmacy. wow what a great pharamacy even though she had to call my previous pharmacy to verify couple of things she had my prescription really fast. normally if a pharmacy has to verify couple of things, fill the prescritpion, and whatever else they do it would have taken other pharmacy 1 hour to 1 hour 30 min. But this pharmacy had my prescription ready in about 15 min. Thank you for your fast service. read more

Always get the best service here. But I normally get cakes from safeway. Never again. They lost my order,blamed it on me,insisted I called the wrong store, refused to fix the mistake, and told me they had 45 other cakes to do so they would npt add mines. As if i called in a last minute favor. Thankfully I called Luckys and explained how I was treated by safeway. They're customer service was so great she said they would try to squeeze me in but it would an hour after I needed it. I was so excited and the look on my son's face was worth it. Hes picky and only eats the whip topping cake which is why I had to order it. When I say this cake was so moist and delicious is an understatement. He actually came over to me at the party and said I did a good job on the cake. Then the party guests kept asking about where I got the cake and it was so good. I felt so relieved.
