Some friends and I had a small birthday celebration at Lula and Sadie's. We were welcomed warmly by the staff and had the opportunity to meet the Head Chef. Everything we ordered was well prepared, served hot and made us want more. The atmosphere in the restaurant is wonderful and we felt very much at home. We arrived a little early so parking was not a problem. The price points were very good considering our orders. The staff is very professional. This is in the old Davis bakery our server was so very good She went over the menu with us as it was our first time Tried things I haven't ever had there is the scallops with the cauliflower potatoes I've never liked cauliflower but this was great I had the fried dirt rice crakes the suce was so good then we had the bacon wrapped pork chop with purple sweet potatoe it was really the best meal and service I've had in awhile it is a new spin on southern comfort food read more

This is probably the best place I visited during my trip to Durham. I ordered the shrimp and grits, hot chicken sandwich and the cheeseburger. The reviewers weren't lying: the cheeseburger and shrimp and grits are very tasty and worth the hype. The hot chicken sandwich, which is supposed to be spicy, wasn't spicy at all. The Mac and cheese and dirty rice were also very good. I'd like to return to this place during my next visit. read more

I was excited to go here for dinner since it was new. We had the fried green tomatoes for our appetizer, not my favorite since I like mine plain and these had cheese and bacon on them. But they were ok! Then I got my pork sliders and potato salad. My meal was good however the potato salad was warm. When I got home I started to not feel good and was sick all night and the next day with what I can only assume was food poisoning which I think can from the warm potato salad. My husband didn't get sick so it had to be something only I ate. He had the pork chops wrapped in bacon and said there wasn't enough flavors going on and the pork chop was dry and had no seasoning. Although our experience was good our food and was not. I may try this place again but it won't be for a while! read more

3.5 stars. I've tried Lula and Sadie's twice now and so far I find their menu very hit or miss. At their best, their food is delicious and flavorful, deserving of its own fine dining restaurant. At their worst, I'm left head scratching wondering if they even taste test their own food. The H1 to H4 steak and potatoes was delicious. The steak was flavorful and tender. I loved the Brussel sprout hash, it had a great crispy texture. I also loved their chicken pot pie soup. The soup base was savory and creamy. Almost like a chicken pot pie version of a nice New England clam chowder. Unfortunately, I found their mash potatoes actually inedible. The batch I ate had probably 2 to 3 times more butter than it should have. The texture of the mashed potatoes was too slushy rather than light and fluffy. The Mac and cheese was also disappointing. The cheese was very lacking and therefore the macaroni noodles had nothing to meld them together. In my opinion, if I were the restaurant owner, I would completely scrap the mashed potato and Mac & cheese recipes and try a new recipe. The ribs were decent but the ribs did not have the fall off the bone quality which separates good from great. I look forward to trying the other items on Lula and Sadie's menu! read more

I've been here a few times, each time I've been here has been sort of pleasant? except for this last time I went. First off, most of their food is a little overpriced if I'm being honest, I went in the other day and got one red beans and rice meal (without any meat mind you. even though the meal is the same price with/without meat) and got my daughter (a toddler) a side of mac & cheese and it was almost $30.... On top of that I'm not sure if maybe the person who was working the counter was dealing with a lot of customers at the time, or maybe just had a busy day, but I'll be honest and say that they are not the most inviting place to eat. You don't really get smiles or that southern hospitality that you would expect from a southern restaurant when you order. There's been a couple exceptions to this, but mostly when I go I don't prepare to be greeted with a smile and "southern charm" This recent time I went, I decided to get the sausage option for my rice and beans instead of the vegetarian option. Well, they forgot the sausage completely, and not only that but the red beans and rice are completely different. Last time I had them, they were very good, flavorful, salty, with a little bit of spice. Now I taste nothing. I mean some of the most bland rice and beans I have ever had... and I ended up paying $14 for it, which, if I'm being honest... is just basically a side of beans and rice. AND the collard greens are much different than last time as well. Not a fan of the new recipes at all. Probably will not come back here. read more

Went last night and loved it. I spent many years in New Orleans and I know good catfish. Lula and Sadie's makes the cut. The food was down home southern comfort food - well executed without being pretentious. Service was friendly, genuine and attentive. The decor was understated, featuring local artists and highlighting the historic architecture of the Davis Baking Co. building. Prices for the portion sizes are reasonable. Patrons of all ages dined together laughing and enjoying the spring night. This is Durham at its best. I enjoyed it so much I bought a snap back hat to rep my new favorite neighborhood joint. Ordered the chicken n dumplings and it was blah! No flavor. Could taste the chicken and salt but it wasn't great. Took it home to add seasoning. Also tasted my husbands red beans and rice and again no flavor other than some spice coming through from the andouille sausage. May have been an off day! read more

We tried this out during covid using their curbside pickup. It was ready within 30 mins and still hot when we got there. Pickup was easy and seamless! We ordered the pimento burgers with mashed potatoes, Mac and cheese and rosemary fries. Our favorite items were the rosemary fries and garlic mashed potatoes! The Mac and cheese was a little bland and watery. Burgers were extremely heavy and the bacon was the saltiest bacon I've ever had. I consider myself to have a salty pallete but mannnn I took off the bacon and couldn't even finish the burger since it was so rich. Maybe it would make good bar food but jeez it needs something fresh or acidic to cut it. Overall good but I would try something different than the burger next time! read more

This was one of the vendors I ordered my food in the Food Court and it was a disaster. I purchased the rib plate which came with some collard green and squash and onion. After paying 20 bucks for my food I was given an alert device which vibrated and beep when my food was ready to be picked up. After about 1/2 hour, I picked up a plate of out- of- the -fridge cold ribs with 2 small condiment size containers of collard green and yellow squash. The ribs were a fall- off- the bone and cold- as- ice mess without any flavors at all. The ribs probably were overcooked in a pressure cooker and stuck in the freezer and nuked in a microwave when some unfortunate person ordered it. I took the ribs back to their counter, and they offered to warm it up some more along with a free slice of pie. That was a nice gesture to make up for that soggy mess, but there will not be a second time between me and Lula & Sadie's. read more

We LOVE Lula and Sadie's! It is one of our favorite spots in Durham and, ever since we moved a month ago, it is the place we miss the most. It can be easy to think of Southern food as "heavy", but Chef H manages to pull out max flavor and enjoyment, while keeping things light and fresh. I've had two meals here so far. Both were stellar. Their soups are amazing, their sides and entrees too! I haven't had better food in Durham. Recently I tried their Nashville Hot Chicken Sandwich and it was better than Popeye's and Chik Filet put together! The roll was perfect and even survived takeout in a box. The only thing that I can mention is they seem to be a bit heavy handed with the salt shaker. While I raved about both soups I've had, and ate every drop, they both seemed saltier than needed. You will catch yourself saying OMG between each bite. Seriously. These people are doing God's work. My husband had the pimento cheese burger and I had the FGT Salad and let me tell you..the best. I had a pretty bad experience here. I never write reviews but if a chef makes me tear up for telling them the burger was burnt I need to leave a review. I was really excited to try the food hall bc everyone raves about it and the pimento bacon burger sounded amazing but I couldn't even eat it. My husband insisted I take it back bc it wasn't cheap. The hostess took it back And I apologized profusely for the inconvenience but then the chef walked out and dropped the burger in front of me asking if I told them how to cook it. I said that i wasn't asked how I wanted it cooked so I assumed it was a standard temperature. He said I needed to have informed her how I wanted it cooked and he angrily asked me "how do you want it?" So I said pink please. He said fine you want pink you get pink. They did bring me another burger and it was delicious but the whole experience really upset me and made me feel horrible. read more
