Went to Lula and Sadie's for Brunch. There was no one working the hostess booth so we had to wait a bit. When we were finally seated, we were told abut a 20% cost of living "Tax". The person didn't use the word tax but should have. Do you know after we agreed to the tax, our waitstaff was no longer attentive to us? We would see her teeheeing with the other waitstaff or back in the back. Put orders in and finally the food came out. It was decent. Greens were swimming in vinegar. Cornbread had been reheated on the griddle. Instead of warm and soft, it was crunchy. They need more staff. read more

We waited about 20 minutes to get our orders taken, then waited another 40 for our orders to come out (we had to ask the waiter where our food was in order for it to come out-- restaurant was empty except for us). The food was not the best; the burger tasted like a weird amalgamation of bacon, burger, and fried onion (and the fried onions were stale), rather than the tastes complementing each other. My friend said the sliders were very underwhelming, especially because the pork was slightly pink and the taste of the meat was plain and under seasoned. This place isn't what it once was. I dined here over a year ago and it was excellent service & food. My husband & I tried to go back this weekend when we realized we were in the neighborhood after an appointment, and southern fare sounded great. We were sat, and then no one waited on us for over 15 minutes. I made eye contact with 2 servers. I watched the host who sat us bring us water, then disappear. I tried to wave to another staff member & was ignored. It was late brunch time on a Sunday. I realize the rush had died down, but there were 3 other tables all getting food. We got up to leave and literally no one noticed. I want to support a black-owned business, but you don't seat a table and just never tell anyone they're there. Or hey, if you're literally anyone else who works there and you see that we have no food & still have menus, you figure it out & help. Thanks anyway, y'all. Sitting at a table in the bar area was delightful! The catfish dish was delicious and I ate every scrap of it with ketchup even tho that is not the way here. The brisket and fries, highly recommended, was way too dry- overcooked on the reheat? And the fries were downright not good, as if they'd been fried twice. We arrived for our reservation at 1230 for brunch and were sat at 1245. The restaurant was extremely short staffed, per the waitress. The wait to order was ridiculously long. We finally ordered at 2:00 using the 5 different menus and the food arrived at 2:20. To their credit, the food was great but that didn't make up for the 20% living wage charge they place on every meal and the long delay. One would expect with all the delays that the manager would come by for a visit. However, he did not. Fantastic! The staff is exceptionally friendly. We ordered the crab cake sandwiches (special), meat loaf, fried rice cakes, dirty rice, and collards. Everything on their menu sounded tempting, but after a day of deliberation, we decided on the brisket Mac-n-Cheese, Hattie B's Style" Nashville hot chicken sliders, and pimento cheese bacon burger. For the sides, we got baked beans and rosemary fries. And ohmygod everything was SO GOOD. My partner loved the mac and cheese (a quote: good smoky flavor and a good mixture of salty and cheesy), and the burger (my favorite) with basil mayo was perfection. I'm already thinking about what I want to get next time! (Currently thinking bacon wrapped meatloaf and grilled pimento cheese and fried green tomato sandwich) Like the rest of the vendors at Durham Food Hall, you can order and pay online. When it's time to pick up your order, enter the Food Hall through the entrance door (they're currently enforcing one way traffic within the building and requiring masks due to COVID-19). I tried this place for brunch recently and unfortunately I was disappointed. I must admit we have a few great brunch places in the triangle so my expectations were really high but the food did not live up to them. I ordered the fried dirty rice dish, I was expecting the dish to be hold and flavorful instead it was dry and lacked any kind of flavor. It does come with a sauce but it's not enough to mask the flavorless grit cake. I definitely think this dish needs to go back to the drawing board. I also had the biscuits and gravy and they were okay. The biscuit was very dry, which may have been okay if the gravy wasn't dry as well. I will say this dish was a great value if it would have tasted well. The side of veggies was the only tasty thing that I ordered. Hopefully it was just these dishes that didn't live up to par but I will not be back to try any additional. I will say that the service was really good. Everyone from the hosts to the server seemed happy to be at work and gave friendly and fast service. The ambiance is nice, it's open and bright, I was lucky enough to get a parking spot right outside the door. There are only three parking spots there. Once they get the food part together they might be on to something but for now I miss the old restaurant that used to be there that really knew how to do biscuits. read more

Lula and Sadie's is such a cools spot inside of a cool spot--a food hall! Literally it is surrounded by all kinds of restaurants and after a not so long debate Lula and Sadie's it was. There menu is full of warm comfort foods that made my stomach growl and mouth water especially after getting my meal. The bacon wrapped meatloaf melted in my mouth. The sauce was not overly powerful and had a nice hint of spice that was complemented by the creamy mashed potatoes. The vegetables were a little raw and hard, so thankful that I had the mashed potatoes that helped soften them just a little bit. Overall I really enjoyed my meal and I will be back! read more

It's located in a popular food hall so I had to circle around the area a few times before I was able to find a parking spot that didn't require a long walk. I placed my order online and waited in the car a bit before walking over to pick it up. I tried the vegetarian red beans and rice, the grilled cheese with a fried green tomato, mac n cheese and slice of sweet potato pie. Atmosphere: Lula & Sadie's is one of the vendors located in the Durham Food Hall. Service: We ordered and picked up our food at the counter, which did not take too long. Food: We ordered the Red Velvet Chicken and Waffles and the Chicken and Dumplings. The Red Velvet Chicken and Waffles was such a new and cool take on a classic dish. The fried chicken was good but not outstanding; however, the waffles make us want to come back again. The waffles were mini, making them easy to eat with the chicken, glaze, and butter. We also liked how the Chicken and Waffles came with fresh fruit, as it brightened the dish. The Chicken and Dumplings were delicious and creamy. We especially liked how the dumplings were decently big since our past experience eating chicken and dumplings at restaurants has been eating small, gummy dumplings that disintegrate before you get a chance to enjoy them. Overall: When we come back to Durham Food Hall, we will definitely enjoy Lula & Sadie's. The one drawback is that it is a bit pricey because it is in the Durham Food Hall, so we would enjoy their food again as a treat! read more

Good solid option for brunch. Waited about 15 minutes for a table, but the seats outside were nicely shaded and breezy. Host staff got us on wait list right away, and checked on us while we waited. Once we were seated, our server greeted us quickly and delivered our drinks. The sweet tea was just sweet enough to not overdo it. I opted for the Birds' Nest Benedict as my main, and shared the Bacon-Pecan Cinnamon Rolls with my friend. The rolls came out with our meal, which we would've preferred to have them as an appetizer -- mental note, be more specific. The rolls were very tasty, but a bit too sweet to eat alongside the savory eggs Benedict. I really enjoyed the Benedict with the salmon cake option. The hash brown "nest" was not overwhelming, and the salmon cake was perfectly prepared. Thoroughly satisfied with the food! The only downside for us was that everything after drinks was a bit slow. If we'd enjoyed the rolls as a starter, the wait might not have been as noticeable. The design of the space is very inviting, and I enjoyed the restaurant design. Plenty of different sized grouping options. Our table was in the bar area, and my only complaint there was that we were seated at the very first table as you enter the space. We walked in to the sound of live jazz music, my favorite! They were busy and we didn't have a reservation but that didn't deter us from eating at this establishment because we were eager to try it after seeing on social media. We were suggested the bar because it was empty, whereas waiting for a table could take some time. Now seated at the bar, the bartender took our drink orders as we skimmed the menu. I ordered the peach Bellini and it was delicious! I noticed the bartender moved a bit slow when making our drink orders so I figured he was new. I also saw him referring to a recipe book for the cocktails, which I didn't mind as it came out delicious. After that I ordered the nawlins pork and grits, sauce on the side. My date ordered the potato crusted fish and wanted grits as a side. With as many grit options on the menus (regular and brunch) we thought this request wasn't difficult to accommodate. They were told that they could not have grits as a side and would need to order something else which was disappointing because we are grits people. They ended up ordering Mac and cheese and mashed potatoes. Almost an hour later our food finally came out. During the wait I wished the bartender had checked on us as I spilled some of my drink on myself and needed napkins and trying to get his attention was quite difficult. He checked on us maybe 5 minutes before the food came out but it was too late. Almost an entire hour has passed so I was a bit irritated. My dish was subpar because I can tell it's been sitting for a while before it was brought to me. The outer part of the grits were ice cold and the part of the grits that was under the meat and the meat itself was lukewarm. My date's dish was hot and fresh. They enjoyed their dish more than I enjoyed mine. I ended up leaving hungry because I could only eat the meat portion of my dish. I'm not fond of cold grits. When we were finished, my date asked for the bill. That also took time because the bartender decided to start a cocktail for another guest (which seemed like it took forever to make) and then right after grab a menu and discuss the different options with another guest before even printing our check. Printing a check takes less than a minute. It would've been nice had he at least printed it before making the drink or grabbing the menu and having an entire conversation with the other guest. All in all, I liked that this restaurant had a live band, I enjoyed the ambiance, but due to the lack of customer service, I will not be back. When asked how was the food after paying, I complained about it being cold and was told 'I will let the kitchen know'. In that situation, maybe grab a manager then and there so that they can take the feedback and deal with it so future orders aren't cold. read more

Great old timey Souther menu. That being said their attempt at fair pay for staff, while nobel in intent, is a disaster in implementation. They add 20% to your bill to start then you are asked to tip 15% or so on top of that! Just raise the prices by 20% up front - that would be truth in advertising. Since chicken and waffles is what I think of for southern comfort food, I wanted to try it. It was quick to order and the food came out in no time. I was really excited to try this spot at the food hall in Durham, their menu items looked and sounded so good! I went for the FGT grilled cheese (fried green tomato) with a side of their garden vegetables and their banana pudding for dessert. The total came out to about $16, a little pricy for me, but not so bad. The bread on the grilled cheese was just a little burnt. The fried green tomato was so thick in the sandwich and the breading was nearly non-existent. It just tasted and felt weird texturally. The thick tomato was raw and mushy combined with the little bits of cheese was just, weird. I wasn't a fan. Their "chef-inspired pick of seasonal vegetables" was a very obviously frozen set of mixed vegetables that they did their best to revive with what was an unpalatable amount of butter and minced garlic. I never thought you could have too much of either of those things, but they proved me wrong. The banana pudding was just okay. It was a lot runnier than what I'm used to and it felt like a lot more pudding than anything else. I had two chunks of banana and it was topped with two mini wafers. It was a pretty disappointing meal as I looked on at my coworkers enjoy their amazing looking pastas from next door. I'll probably be trying out other spots the next time I'm at the food hall. read more

We decided to have dinner here before our show. L&S is very cute with great ambiance. Our waitress was knowledgeable, professional and friendly. My daughter and I ordered a drink which were both delicious. For our entrees I ordered the rib plate with collards and potato salad for my sides. My daughter ordered the duck gumbo. I requested that if the ribs were not prepared with the bbq on them to please put it on the side. When my plate arrived the ribs were drowned in a thick bbq sauce, thankfully I was able to remove most of the sauce. The bbq sauce tasted like ketchup, a nasty, thick ketchup, definitely not Heinz. The ribs did not taste smoked, they weren't that great. As for the collards not to my liking, the potato salad tasted like it came from Walmart, definitely not home made. As for the gumbo which looked more like etouffee, it was flavorless. The duck was not incorporated into the "gumbo" it was placed on top. She ate the duck but did not eat the remainder of her food. The waitress noticed and suggested trying something else on the menu but we had to decline due to the timing of our show. She then said I'll see if we can take it off your check. The manager came over and curtly explained that since she ate the duck she still had to pay for the dish. WE NEVER ASKED FOR THE MEAL TO BE REMOVED FROM THE BILL. We have frequented Lula and Sadie's since the opening of the Durham Food Hall and the food is always amazing. It's always been takeout, but the food is packaged well and the meatloaf is phenomenal. My partner and I decided to have our wedding in the Durham Food Hall and the obvious choice of catering was Lula and Sadie's. So we started working with Harry on the catering menu and to our pleasant surprise, he said we could customize it. We're Puerto Rican and Persian so he made a custom menu that incorporated flavors from our cultures and worked with us throughout the process. On the day of the wedding I had a lot of excitement about trying the food and it was way better than expected. They made chimichurri steak on top of a bed of mashed yuca that was epic, saffron chicken with some 'melt in your mouth' collard greens, and a super flavorful pomegranate salmon. All of this was in addition to the sampler plate that had a saffron rice croqueta and pomegranate brussel sprouts with pine nuts.
