Listed in Canada's 100 best restaurants, lulu bar is a popular establishment in Calgary that recently opened a second location inside the Well at the heart of Toronto. The restaurant is split into two levels, with a beautiful bar downstairs and a mid-century modern dining room with an open kitchen upstairs. We fell in love with the decor and the cozy yet sophisticated vibe. As a Pacific-inspired restaurant, Lulu offers an extensive drink menu with so many fun tropical cocktails, and they are all half priced during happy hour! The food menu pays tribute to the many coastal regions of the Pacific Ocean with influences from Hawaii and Asia. During happy hour, several of the small plates items are discounted from their regular menu, so it's great if you are looking for something to snack on. We tried the kale salad which was so refreshing and delicious, the hot dog bao, the crispy new potatoes and the salt & pepper pork belly. All the dishes were $10 and under, which is an amazing deal! The service, ambiance, and food were perfect for a night to catch up with friends! The cocktails were strong and so well put together. There's some fun cups and mugs they're served in as well which is fun! The food is meant to share family style. We got to try the Mochiko Friend Chicken (yum), Fried Thai Noodles, and Curry Coconut Linguini. All the dishes were great and complimentary of each other. Their customer service was also amazing given a communication error on ordering but was resolved fairly quickly and left satisfied. TL;DR: If you're looking for a bar / lounge with chic interior décor, decent patio, and nice cocktail drinks, or a King West vibe, this is the place to be. If you're looking for really good food or authentic Hawaiian cuisine without the King West price tag, you're better off elsewhere. Lulu Bar brands it self as "a taste of the Pacific with influences from Asia to Hawaii, California to British Columbia". The only Hawaiian-inspired dishes on the menu are the poké and loco moco (which are somewhat fusion-ized here). There are 2 entrances: from inside the open-air mall (which leads you to the large lounge and dining area in the upper ground), and from the outside (which leads you to the street-side patio and small bar). Their patio is pretty nice in the summer. There are washrooms on both floors / areas (the one on the lower floor leading to the patio is wheelchair-accessible and gender-neutral, but often there is a long lineup). Service here was the downside. When we first arrived, the host was nowhere to be seen (no staff in sight). The good thing was that we were able to be seated right away despite having no reservation. It was during their afternoon happy hour on a weekend, so the place was packed and very busy. They forgot to fill up the water and other items that were requested. Some of the staff seemed somewhat grumpy and not very welcoming, but some others were friendlier. We were seated in the corner of the patio so staff rarely came by and it was a bit hard to get their attention. In addition, the table was right beside where they put the loud speaker playing music - literally right beside my ear. It was a small portable speaker / music player that was placed within the plants section / wall of the patio, so it was easily movable. They should've placed it somewhere more central or not right beside a guest table... having high-decibels music pounding right beside and so close to my ear made for an unpleasant dining experience. Some of the dishes were good but some were a thumbs down for me. THE GOOD: - Grilled Atlantic Cod: Loved the grill char on top, turmeric and coconut sauce that wasn't too heavy or overpowering, and stir-fried greens. - Loco Moco minus the beef patty: You can ask for it without the beef patty to make it vegetarian. I liked that it came topped with mushrooms and fried onions. The gravy wasn't too thick or salty; it went well with the ginger fried rice. I also liked the fried egg with somewhat runny yolk and crispy edges. SO-AND-SO: - Kale Salad: Nothing special. It was alright. THUMBS DOWN: - Steamed Lobster Dumplings: 95% wrapper and 5% content. The dumpling 'content' barely had any lobster... at least I couldn't taste any lobster. The wrapper was made of sticky dough - not a fan of the texture. Dumplings were drowned in chili soy that was super salty and didn't taste good at all. There are so many better places to get seafood-filled dumplings, with legit seafood in it. Skip this one. - Grilled Oyster Mushrooms: The dressing, called "crying tiger dressing" on the menu, was very sticky, extremely sweet and salty (not in a good, tasty way). The king oyster mushrooms themselves were okay and had a nice texture, but the sauce / dressing was such a let down. Summary: Nice cocktails, lounge / bar, and patio. King West vibe. Service could be a hit-or-miss. Few dishes are good, many are just so-and-so or 'meh'. read more

Lulu bar is beautiful. The interior design is what brings me back. The drinks are delicious and so pretty to look at. The food and drinks are a little pricey but you are definitely paying for the vibe. The food is good but I wouldn't say to die for. There isn't much variety as well for the mains. I finally came by for Happy Hour! I had a hard time choosing something from the drinks menu. Half priced cocktails?! I wanted one of each. The food menu for Happy Hour was short but it gave you an idea of what they have as part of their main menu. My dining companion and I tried the pork belly, chips and dip, potatoes, and from the regular menu, the calamari. Although we weren't wowed, we overall enjoyed the food and drinks. Service was attentive and even with different servers, the transitions were seamless. Patio seating on a cooler summer day was the perfect way to spend an afternoon. Great happy hour. Probably the best in the city. Nice fancy and boozy drinks. We had the Mai Tai and smooth operator. Drinks came out pretty quick. Smooth operator is better than Mai Tai even though it's not on their featured cocktail list. Lot of people get the nine lives drink because of how it's served. Next time I'll get that. Definitely get a reservation on open table for happy hour because they're very busy. I loved the ambiance. Lots of plants and warm ambiance. The miso cured eggs looked really good. A well done fusion restaurant is a rare find. Most of them lean too heavily on one side of the fusion and lose the other part completely. This Hawaiian / Asian restaurant achieved a hard to find balance with the freshness of Hawaiian food and the complexity of asian flavours. The restaurant itself is big and very well decorated. I went for lunch on a weekday, so it was mostly empty and the service was great. The portion sizes were a bit weird, it's marketed as shareable food, but I felt finding the right amount of food to be full was hard. Despite all the good things, I feel like the food was nothing special and too simple. read more

We really enjoyed this restaurant, it's decorated so beautifully and right downtown close to everything. The happy food was mostly fantastic, with the salt and pepper pork belly, hot dog bao, and chips and dip real stars! They were all top tier! Skip the crispy new potatoes--the dish doesn't really work. Our waitress was very nice and the manager was helpful as she understood how slow the bar service was going that day. Came here with some friends and sat at the bar. One thing to note is that although this place looks small, it has another level thats much larger with a bigger bar upstairs. The upstairs location is also open later than the ground floor. Ben, our bartender, was awesome. He was friendly, knowledgeable, and made some delicious cocktails. We got so many cocktails, but some noteworthy ones are the Mai tai (which is served flaming), Fever Dream, and the clarified jungle bird. For snacks we got the salt and pepper pork belly, grilled chicken satay, and beef tongue skewer. I would definitely go back again for a meal and more cocktails. read more

The Fusion menu is great but the dishes are hit or miss. While some of their dishes are good, many are way too salty. Came here for Summerlicious. The results: 1 - Hot Dog Bao - Good 2 - Sichuan Noodle Salad - Not Good - Dressing was way too salty and the Chili sauce used in the dressing should not be eaten raw in my opinion - tastes bad. 3 - Coconut Tres Leches Cake - Good Additional stuff I ordered: - Fried Miso Cured Egg - OK. A little salty, especially the Cucumber Salad underneath - King Kona alcoholic coffee cocktail - Not my thing. Also the entire top was just plain ice while all the ingredients were at the bottom. - California Sober - Better than King Kona ... Came here on a Friday night with a group of 5. We got seat within 5 mins. And someone came after to give us water. However, after that it was so long before the waitress came back for our order. Must have been at least 20 to 30 mins. We were starving and it was 9:45 in the evening. To somewhat make up for that, the food came out quite fast. However, one of our friends was a vegetarian and wanted to do the summerlicious menu. And we were all finished with our food but he still had to wait for his main course. So when we ate, he had to wait and when we finished, we had to wait for him to eat. Then it took another 20-30 mins for our bill to come. Most of the dinner just felt like a long waiting game. Overall, food was flavorful and delicious. I like the modern take on traditional asian flavors. But overall we had a pretty bad dining experience due to inefficient and uncoordinated service. It's a shame but if I'm paying this price for a dinner, I deserve better service. read more

I visited Lulu Bar for the 2024 Summerlicious menu ($34 per person for lunch). Overall, Lulu Bar has a nice atmosphere and great service, but certain dishes were underwhelming. The Mochiko Fried Chicken was quite a strange dish--the fried chicken was good, but it was served on a bed of rice with raw bean sprouts and a buttermilk sauce. The flavors did not work well here. The Branzino and chicken satay were good; both the chicken and fish were juicy, and the sauces accompanying them were flavorful and paired well. However, the desserts, such as the marshmallow and tres leches cake, were overly sweet for my taste. Happy hour seems to be a good deal since drinks are 50% off. Overall, Lulu Bar has a nice ambiance, but the food in certain areas is lacking. Some dishes stand out, but the prices are, in my opinion, a bit too high. read more

First impression was wow what a great atmosphere. The vibes are chill and there's plenty of seating with a second floor. The staff is very efficient, and our server was so sweet, she never missed a beat on bringing us water, taking our order and cleaning up after we were done. We went during happy hour, and let me tell you the cocktails were amazing, and half off during this time! We tried 3 of their drinks, all very different flavor profiles, none were sweet (which is great) and all easy to drink! For the food we tried a few dishes from the happy hour menu. Our favorite was the burger which tasted a lot of a big mac - which is a compliment, no shade, because I like burgers that are juicy and flavorful, and sometimes I find burgers at restaurants to be dry and not the greatest, so this was a hit for us. Our second favorite was the chips and dip, the chips are fried udon but the star of this dish was kimchi dip. It was surprisingly very refreshing and not all heavy, which is what you expect from a creamier dip, it paired well together. The salt and pepper pork belly was very similar to the chinese pork you get at the stores, so for us it was good, but nothing we haven't had before. The potatoes were our least favorite. We found the pumpkin seed emulsion to have no flavor, but we did like the bit of thai sausages. The menu itself also looks to be very chinese/korean inspired as well. Next time we'll try some of those dishes! This place does get busy so I'd really suggest making a reservation! read more

Lulu bar is a wonderful addition to The Well. There are two levels and we were seated in the second floor. They have an elevator as one of our guest has mobility issues. It has a great selection of drinks with: tikis, cocktail, (great) craft beer on tap, sake, red, and white. Our table ordered four cocktails and they were all great. We had Salt & Pepper pork belly and Fried coconut squid to start. Great flavour and texture, lime really came through with the crunchy pork belly and the batter on the squid was nice crunchy and light. The BBQ crispy half duck was the star. This was enough to be shared for four people. There's crepe and lettuce to wrap the duck, two way, braised leg (middle), and duck breast sliced, along with vegetables and pickles. The baked hula was recommended to us and it was great to share between four people. Not too sweet, perfect to end with a sweet note. I would come back to try all the unique cocktails. I have no doubt they will do very well here. read more

We came here for summerlicious (lunch $34 per person), which is a pretty good value compared to their regular prices. However, even at summerlicious prices, I would not come back here. We ordered: - hot dog bao ($12) - grilled chicken satay ($8) - mochiko fried chicken ($32) - grilled branzino (not on their regular menu) - coconut tres leches cake ($14) - huapia marshmallow (not on their regular menu) Starting with the good, the only thing I would order again is the grilled chicken satay. The chicken texture was great and the sauce was quite tasty, but nothing too extraordinary. This was my first bite of the meal and it only went downhill from here. The hot dog bao was alright. Tastes like what you would expect. Now the bad, the mochiko fried chicken was just straight up not good. The dish was three main components plus a sauce: white rice, fried sauced chicken, and pickled bean sprouts. The visual of the dish is unappetizing and very bland in terms of colour (white, red/brown, and grey). I think the picture actually looks better than how the dish looked in real life. The best part of the dish both taste wise and aesthetics is the chicken, which is topped with/covered with grey-looking bean sprouts. I understand that the bean sprouts were probably meant to add texture to the dish, but there are a lot of other crunchy toppers that would have looked and tasted better, such as a simple coleslaw. I was also not a fan of the buttermilk sauce accompanying this dish. The grilled branzino was decent. I'd only recommend this if you enjoy fish, because the fishiness comes through quite strong, but in my opinion, in a good way. The desserts were both extremely sweet, which I understand some people may enjoy. Not for me personally. I think the service could be better. The servers were very nice, but I felt it very difficult to get their attention (when water was dripping from the ceiling onto my boyfriend and we wanted to ask to move to a new table as well as when we wanted to get the bill). I had to try so hard to make eye contact with them and many of them just didn't look at us at all. The ambiance is quite nice and I would imagine this place would be better for drinks (happy hour is half price drinks) and chatting with friends, with the food being not the focus. The happy hour drinks are half off and various small plated discounted as well. I enjoyed the potatoes dish! Look forward to trying their mains next time. Lulu Bar was a wonderful dining experience. We loved the casual yet elegant vibe of the restaurant. The space is large, but still felt very intimate and cozy. We were blown away by the dishes - we tried several share plates split amongst our group, and split 2 entrees and dessert. The plating was wonderful and we so enjoyed trying all the coastal flavors. There was a full menu of cocktails and non-alcoholic drinks - presentation was on pointe with everything that came from the bar. Our service was wonderful as well, and staff did an excellent job of keeping the food and drinks flowing. This is a great spot for anyone - perfect for a one-on-one dinner, all night dining with a large group, or fun and casual drinks at the bar. Drinks were great and atmosphere was nice. But service was horrible. Waiter never came around and even when we'd try to get his attention to order more drinks he would ignore us. Then when we finally get the bill and pay, what looked like the manager came around while we were waiting on one friend who was in the bathroom, and made us feel extremely uncomfortable by sort of pushing us to leave and acting like we were loitering.
