Came here with my dad looking to try a new Mexican spot. The ambiance was truly nice, it was well decorated and had great lighting. Right as we sat down, the waitress gave us chips and salsa while we had a look at the menu. We ordered the Caldo de camaron and mixed fajitas. The food came out 10 minutes apart from each other and our waitress forgot to give us the tortillas twice (she helped out 2 other tables before coming back to us with them). Also, our soup came with fish not shrimp initially so we had to go back and ask the kitchen to fix that. The food was great though. The caldo tasted rich and the fajita veggies were nicely done. My only qualm is that the shrimp in the caldo was pretty overcooked and the chicken in the fajitas was very overcooked and dry. The bill came out to around 60 dollars for everything. If I was to come back, I'd stick to the shrimp fajitas as those were really well flavored. read more

This is a nice spot to get some great food. After reading some of the reviews I see it's a mom and daughter shop and I think they are the ones that are always there. Came in and got the menus pretty fast and got helped fast. The drinks and chips with salsa got served first. Me and my boyfriend got the carne asada plates and it was pretty good. Came here for late lunch one Saturday afternoon. This place was a Falafel place before this restaurant took over. Not too big inside. Maybe 10 tables at the most. I want to start off by stating I did enjoy the food. With the exception of the chicken which was so overcooked it could not be cut. The steak and shrimp were well seasoned and tasty. This popped up in the old falafel place. We decided to give this new restaurant a try on a weekday for dinner. Place was completely empty when we walked in. It's small but they filled it up with a lot of artificial plants because of which it was very colorful. Menu had a lot of seafood options and we were intrigued so we got an order of fish soup in addition to some chicken tacos and chicken fajitas. What worked- The fish soup is AMAZING! It had large veggie chunks like potatoes, carrots etc, the fish chunks were large as well but the broth still felt light while being flavor packed. The fish was delicately cooked without any weird fishy smell. They provided toppings like hot salsa, diced onions, lemon wedges and cilantro on the side which amped up the soup. I highly recommend getting this. We could hear them cooking in the kitchen, they took their time with it and when the food came it all looked and tasted extremely fresh and prepared with a lot of care. What did not work- The dishes felt westernized compared to the plethora of other Mexican restaurants and food trucks in the area. For example the veggies in the fajita did not have their characteristic char. Beans were replaced by a salad in the fajita dish. The service is extremely slow, almost at a snails pace. Though we were the only ones in the restaurant it took almost 20 mins to get our first dish. read more

Howdy, I dont even know where to begin with this place. Honestly, its tough to put it into words because i genuinely haven't had this bad of an experience at a dining establishment in a long while and it was rough enough for me to leave a review so people know what they are getting (or not getting). My wife and i had a rare night out to eat after the kids back to school night. We looked this place up, saw lots of good reviews (which now boggles my mind), so we decided to give it a whirl. The first thing we noticed when we walked in, is there were no other people in the place at 630pm on a wednesday off of one of the busiest streets in san jose during rush hour...red flag. We walked in, and up to a little counter, and a younger woman greeted us, was pleasant and asked if we wanted to sit or order to go, we told her sit. She handed us a few menus from the counter, which when we got to the table to look over, we could feel grime and old food on the laminated menus. Red flag two. We sat down and started to look over the menu, and within a few minutes, you couldnt help but to notice the music blaring so loud on the wall directly behind our heads, that we could barely hear each other say what we wanted to eat. After a few minutes, the younger woman came out with a basket of chips and take our drink orders. Margarita and ice tea (ice tea was soft drink poured out of a plastic bottle, i could see it in their cold case behind the counter). The chips were out of a bag from safeway, and they were stale. They were not fresh or warm restaurant chips, but round, bland, stale, store bought chips with a tiny cup of flavorless salsa. We didnt finish the tiny basket by end of night, it was not good and the menu said only the first basket is on the house (thank god). Gal came back out with our drinks and to take our order. My wife ordered the enchiladas...gal says, oh we are sorry, thats a specialty saturdays only! Wife was bummed, but she pivoted quickly to flautas...only to be told once again that is saturday only specialty item (menu does not indicate this at all). Wife super bummed again, orders the taco salad (oh boy, im thinking to myself, if Her plan C is a taco salad, she officially is over this place and we are in trouble). My turn, i order the combo fajitas. Corn or flour tortillas, i ordered flour and rice and beans. While we waited, we stared at fake plants, sea shells and listened to blaring music. When food came out, the fajitas came first, with a side of rice and...salad? I orderer it with rice and beans, but ok. She brought me out some beans and said she would be back with some silverware and taco salad. So while my hot fajitas cooled off, we waited for silver ware and my wifes taco salad. When she came out with our tiny forks, she asked my wife what kind of salad dressing she wanted on her taco salad: ranch or Italian..,huh? Ranch or italian? Authentic mexican restaurant and the taco salad she brings out i kid you not was a iceberg wedge house salad served with a side of italian, no beans, or sour cream, or guac, or anything that resembled a traditional taco salad. When we asked her where all the good stuff was, she said that every place is different and thats how they make it there. By this point, i mean, we werent thrilled with much of anything. But it was time to dig in. I had my fajitas in front of me with a small plate or rice, and another small plate with beans, and my three tiny flour tortillas, lets do this! At this point im so hungry, i didnt care. Wife starts to dig into her house salad in a taco shell, and as she is digging in, she pulls out a piece of parchment paper about 5x5 inches wide...when we asked the waitress about the food contamination in the salad, she said it was their way of keeping the bottom of the taco shell from getting soggy and again told us every place is different and that is how they do it there. To say it was a rough dinner, is an understatement. It felt like a gamble to trust the food at this point. I hesitantly at a couple tiny fajitas (served w no sour cream, guac or anything, just dry bland food on stale tortillas). The shrimp was tough, the steak was jerky, and the food just had no flavor. Wife ate a few bites of her salad despite the parchment paper incident, and i couldnt finish the bulk of it, because it was just not worth asking for more tortillas, nor dealing with another frustration. So, we very quickly prob within ten minutes of receiving our forks, were closing our bill and getting out of there. Super disappointing experience, and to have an employee argue with me about our food being contaminated with parchment paper and how to make a taco salad is enough for me to never return. Im not a foody, or Robert Irvine, but i just think they need to be more honest with what they are serving so patrons know what they are getting, and get some culinary help in there because the food quality was not quality and literally had trash in the dish. read more

I went twice after finding out this restaurant was open (I didn't realize they opened, I think in September). My family was happy that I found this place. I had the fish soup and the grilled fish plate. I loved both as they had excellent flavor, tasted freshly made, and it had good portions. The first time, my plate came with white herby rice, which was really yummy. The second time, it was more orange closer to the typical Mexican rice, and even though it was good, I prefer the less typical white/beige herby one. My daughter had the fish tacos, and she liked them so much that she reordered the second time. The interior is very nicely decorated and very clean, and the persons that run this restaurant are friendly and offer good service. I did not take pictures of the food as we were all very eager to eat it and forgot to do so. read more

Honestly. Don't waste your time or money here. So many things wrong with this place. Food took over an hour for a party of 5, and we were the only ones there when we arrived. Food was decent but for the time waited you would think it would come out better. Upon arriving they placed 1 basket of chips with salsa for 5 people and when we asked for more, we were not informed it would cost extra. Server gave us the chips then ended up charging us at the end. You would think if you had to wait over an hour for the food, literally 4 plates; the chips and salsa would at least be complimentary. And if it isn't you should inform your guests. We also order 3 fajita plates and were only give like 5 tortillas. Less than 2 per plate. We were also charged extra when we asked for more tortillas. We were also not informed it would be an extra charge until it was on the bill and too late. Steak was too rough and not chewable and chicken seemed undercooked. We were not informed the plates would be scolding hot when placed in front of us and my grandpa burnt his finger. Fajitas came with only salad and rice. No other condiments like salsa or guacamole. When we asked for guacamole and beans we were told they still need to be made and would not be available. It was 6pm. Not sure why the reviews are so high, maybe it's new ownership now. Living in San Jose, I've tried every Mexican restaurant you can imagine. Luna Del Mar recently opened up down the street and I decided to give them a try, not expecting much. I was pleasantly surprised at the level of service, ambiance and most of all, quality of the food. This was NOT like any of the typical Mexican restaurants that I've been to, and that is a very good thing in this case! When the rice and the salad arrived, I was amazed at how distinct and delicious they both were. All the meat and seafood was extremely fresh, and you could tell there was a homemade touch. The decor is also very inviting and the vibe is very lively with karaoke being sung. It was also very clean all around and inside the restroom as well. Aside from the delicious and different food, the best part was the service provided by Nellie. She was extremely sweet to me and my wife from the moment we ordered until the very end. She recommended her favorite dish, which was a bacon wrapped jalapeño and shrimp plate, which I forgot the name of, but you should definitely ask about! The salsas are all homemade and very flavorful as well! I can't say enough good things about Luna Del Mar and Nellie's outstanding service. We're definitely going to go back and try all the dishes that seem most unfamiliar to us, I'm sure we'll enjoy them all judging by the quality of the dishes we had tonight. I came here with my wife and had an amazing time. I think we crashed someone's birthday party they were having at the restaurant but the whole vibe was amazing. They were having karaoke the whole time which was very nice because the singers did such a great job. I believe even the owners joined in and they had an amazing voice. This is a Mexican Restaurant serving authentic Mexican food. We came here on a Monday early evening. We were the only customers. The restaurant was clean and they were playing Hispanic karaoke music on the screen. Since I've been to Mexico, the menu instantly reminded me of Puerto Vallarta because of all of the seafood offerings. The rest of my family had fajitas; I had a delicious a shrimp wrapped in bacon dish. Omg, it was yummy! Everyone was satisfied with their meal and would definitely come back. This is a nice and clean family run restaurant. We arrived at an off time for lunch so we were the only ones dining there. The service was attentive. The shrimp tacos were really good, but the fish tacos were just okay. The bacon wrapped shrimp however was delicious - I loved that there was a little slice of jalapeno hidden inside. Unfortunately, the fries that it came with were undercooked and soggy. 5 stars if they could perfect the fries to go with the shrimp. The service was incredibly slow and inefficient, to the point where the server went back and forth for individual sets of cutlery for a party of five. However many of the other dishes we ordered ie: ceviche, fajitas, bacon wrapped shrimp; were lacking in flavor and were very one note. The inside is quite nice and clean with sea themed decorations.
