I'll start off by saying I went into Luna Maya thinking it was like every other Mexican restaurant in the area, but I found this place terrible. The prices are way too high for what you get. My server, who was clueless told me my 2 enchilada's that cost $11 were huge and in fact they were the same old small enchilada's you get at the other Mexican places for $4. I asked for spicy and if that was spicy it was pathetic. And they were cold. The cheese wasn't even melted. The beans on the plate were a blob of burnt black. The rice was good though. The margarita had some much salt in it we couldn't drink them and they were weak for $8 For the price we paid for 2 meals we could have at least have gotten some complimentary chips. Really good food and atmosphere was nice (although, I wish it wasn't as loud as it was, I honestly don't even know why it was so loud). Overall an OK experience. Party of 4 seated quickly although it appeared to be busy. Waitress was nice and had some good recommendations about what to eat. I ordered the build your own tacos, which turned out to be a mistake. There was a good amount of meat (in my case spicy chicken, which was decidedly not spicy and not that great.) However, there were only three very small taco shells. The meal came with rice, beans, guac and homeade mexican style coleslaw. The rice/beans were subpar, the guac was average. The coleslaw was EXCELLENT. We ordered a chips & salsa/queso appetizer. It was fair at best, the queso was cold, the salsa was bland and the chips were store bought (seriously, what kind of Mexican place uses store bought chips...?) Pros: - Excelelnt coleslaw, guacamole was good, perhaps slightly above average - Knowledgeable staff - Decent menu options (although I question the 'spicy' designation) Cons: - Very loud. Wow, what a surprise when you walk through the doors of this place! Very chic, modern decor with high ceilings, exposed brick and open space. There's an immediate energy of a sophisticated, urban restaurant . More importantly, the food is quite good. The fresh guacamole is excellent as is the marinated strip beef appetizer. I was immediately put off when we were told to wait at the bar even though we had a reservation. We had to wait until at least half of our party arrived before we would get a table. I held my baby in my arms at the bar while we waited which irritated me. We did have a larger party of about 10 people. Once seated, it took a little while to get our orders taken but I attributed this to the time of day and our large party. They did accommodate me with the highchair when I asked; however, there is absolutely no place to change a baby. The female restroom is large and could definitely accommodate a changing table but there's nothing. I asked the waiter if there's a place for me to change my child's diaper. He kind of grimaced and said no. I immediately had to cancel our order and leave. I can't understand how you can advertise as a family restaurant and not provide a place to change a baby's diaper. So overall I guess I can't even leave a review on the food because we never got to that point. If you are family and plan to visit this restaurant make sure your baby doesn't need a diaper change or come prepared to change your baby and your car. Disappointing. read more

Absolutely terrible! The main ingredient in the salsa was bbq sauce and the staff had no idea as to what a fried jalapeño was. Food was mediocre at best and service was terrible, your better off at Taco Bell. Over priced and plainly not good, don't waste your time or money. I really want to love this place with a full 5 star review, but there are a couple things I don't like. I don't like how the restaurant gets very loud from the acoustics of the building, which I am not sure they can do much about but it's not a place for a date in my opinion because it's just so echo-heavy. I do love the veggie options here, it's one of the places that caters to vegans, for that, it's 5 stars. The service is good, the food is good, parking is ok because you can park in the bank next door after hours. I don't like the salsa that comes with the appetizers but you can order pico for $.50 and it's delicious, but that's a personal preference. I should probably ask next time for the chips to be warmed, because they come cold, like right out of a bag. So, maybe house made chips could put this restaurant over that 4 star mark since I know they can't really do much about the sound problem. I only enjoy this place about once every other month, so I am not a super regular, take my opinion with a grain of salt. read more

This is the strangest tasting "Mexican food" I've ever had in my entire life. I'm almost 100% positive the beans are made with cinnamon and the rice is regular white rice with yellow food dye. This was the most Americanized Mexican restaurant I've ever stepped foot in, not even the music was Spanish. If you're looking for REAL Mexican food DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY. Be sure to call Luna Maya when planning your next private party. Our experience was outstanding! I hosted a birthday party there for my wife and 50 of our friends last night. From start to finish, Luna Maya's event planner, Celia, and the restaurant staff were professional and friendly. They bent over backwards to meet our wish list and budget. We used their large back room and removed all of the tables. It was a perfect setup for our cocktail party. The food and drinks were excellent as always. We had apps and a taco bar along the wall which were a huge hit. Even though it was buffet style, the chicken, shrimp, slaw, rice and beans were as hot and delicious as they are with individual table service. The three servers assigned to our party kept up with all of our needs as well. So many of our friends couldn't believe that Luna Maya did parties like this in addition to seated dinner parties. [BAD SERVICE] While the food, drinks, & atmosphere are always wonderful, I have repeatedly received horrible service from Stephanie. On my first visit, she got my drink orders wrong twice & forgot a side order until I asked her to remove it from the bill. I passed it off as 'she was having a bad day', but upon visiting last night for my birthday, & having her as my waitress, I once again received terrible service. She forgot multiple drink orders for my party, didn't bring me my food at all (even though I reminded her multiple times), & she carried a flustered, dismissive attitude that didn't help the situation. This won't prevent me from returning for the awesome vegetarian options & great drinks, but the restaurant is suffering from the repeatedly bad service. I will not refrain from asking for a different server if she is assigned to my table next time. read more

Let me start by saying eh. The restaurant was beautiful and that's about the only good thing about my experience. The food was so so I cook Mexican food with more flavor. The queso however was delicious. Our waitress was awful and the other waitress who dropped off something for us was awful. Let me suggest this establishment teach their waitresses how to be human beings and say your welcome when a customer thanks them or you know to smile just once. At one point our waitress huffed and rolled her eyes when my friend took an extra second to order her food. Contrary to their annoyed expressions I did not come their to ruin their Saturday I just wanted good food and an inviting staff neither of which I got. I am SO impressed! The food was incredible. Tons of vegetarian and vegan options. Adrienne, our waitress, was the absolute sweetest and SO attentive! She made sure we had a constant supply of water, chips, salsa, and napkins-- and was super friendly and prompt the entire time. The ambience in this place is perfect for a Saturday night. I got the garlic shrimp appetizer, the "piscque de la macho"(?) and Ben's wrap; all were super tasty, though the al macho was the standout (it IS spicy, jjust a heads up). Fantastic and exciting Mexican fare in a hip, energetic, yet classy setting. The noise-level doesn't make it the spot for a quiet, romantic conversation, but it does reflect how well-liked it is, as I've never seen it slow. The tables are a tad close together but all our dining neighbors have been good-natured and it's never created a problem. They are willing to work with dietary restrictions, and offer vegan and gluten-free menu items, and were willing to adapt items to my lactose intolerance. My absolute favorite item is the side of spicy potatoes. They have an amazing, smokey flavor that is hard to resist, and I ended up eating most of my husband's after I realized how good they are. They also have a private back room that would be perfect for events, and you know that the food will be excellent. Parking is a little challenging, but that's to be expected in Ghent. read more

Let me start off my saying that the atmosphere and the location is amazing. I recently moved to the Hampton Roads, but so far, it is my impression that there are not that many Latin American restaurants, and this is the only sit down "up-scale" restaurant my wife and I have found. Regarding the food, it is important to keep in mind that the restaurant is actually the Bolivian interpretation of Mexican food, so some of the dishes did not hit home for me. The cole-slaw for example is something we have ever seen in a taco. I had the Spicy Chicken Tacos and I was taken aback by the fact that I had to build them. The tortillas were also clearly microwaved because the edges where extremely hard and there was not a single scorch mark, which to me is extremely disappointing given the nature of the restaurant. My wife had the Tamales Luna Mayo, but they were extremely sweet. We ended up having to switch plates. read more

My wife's favorite restaurant. She particularly loves the Mojitos and the Mango Margaritas. The Mexican cuisine is equally delicious. I tend to get the Colorado Burrito which is just plain crazy delicious. Spicy without being awkwardly hot. The guacamole is made fresh daily. My Texan-Jewish-Cowboy ancestors would probably roll over in their graves if they knew I would give five stars to a Mexican restaurant east of the Sabine or north of the Red River on Yelp, but Luna Maya is worthy of the damage to my ancestral gravesites. This is a place that has taken a stand against patronizing east coasters by dumbing down Tex-Mex: it actually puts spice into its food. The guacamole is fresh and tangy, and the enchiladas are spicily delicious. Plus, the atmosphere makes me feel like I actually live in a cool city (disregard the fact that it's in a strip mall). Looking for a special evening tonight to celebrate my nephews birthday, we chose Luna Maya, a place we first visited in VA Beach, always known for quality food and attention to detail. In attempting to make a reservation we were directed to the website, which was accepted and confirmed. However as our out of town guests arrived prior to our arrival they where advised there was no reservation under my name. However, the hostess did accommodate our party and after a short wait seated our guests. As we walked up to the restaurant, we noticed the outside patio left us wondering where we at the right place as it appeared to be a restaurant closed for winter. Once inside the atmosphere was good. After being seated, approximately 10 minutes later a waitress appeared with no introduction or welcoming attitude. The food was ok, the best part being was the tamale appetizer. We feel service can make or break your expreience at a restaurant and we felt tonight was a fail. read more

Luna Maya was a great dining experience! The atmosphere upon walking in makes you fee like royalty--minus the waiting time on a Saturday night--but hey, it was worth the wait and there is a bar to grab a drink from in the mean time :-) From the second my date and I sat down the service was speedy and professional. We asked for a recommendation for an appetizer and one of the sisters who owns the restaurant came out and offered us the habanero pepper dip for an appetizer. It is now one of my absolute favorites! I had a burrito for dinner which was very good but the dessert is what i will never forget.The flour-less chocolate torte was the most amazing texture and flavor ever! This will be my dessert spot from now on even when I dine somewhere else for dinner--yes, it was that good! This place is great for any occasion because you can get dressed up or just be casual. I love Luna Maya! My husband and I go often when we want Mexican, but with (a bit) of a healthier and fresher twist. It is hip and fun and doesn't feel like you're in Norfolk. During the week, we try to get there before 6:30...happy hour! Margaritas and monitors are $5 and so is the guacamole! A great deal:). I love the Luna Maya salad. The slaw is fabulous. I had heard good things about Luna Maya so hubby and I were excited when friends wanted to meet us there for dinner. The first issue is that this place is really, really loud. It lacks any kind of noise remediation devices that would help make it more enjoyable. For a bar, that's fine but in a restaurant, it just shouldn't be this loud! Second, server not friendly and totally ignored us after bringing out food out. My husband had to nearly trip somebody to get us a water refill. Third, I had the stuffed rellenos and it tasted like someone had accidentally spilled the salt shaker in it. My husband helped me eat some. Fourth, both my stomach-of-steel hubby and I were quite sick the next day. Since my dish was the only thing we shared, that must have been the culprit. Blech. Fifth, way overpriced for the service and food quality. There are a lot of good restaurants in the area; this isn't one of them. We won't return. read more

My wife loved her margatinis, while I had a gross Brazilian rum drink and an ok margarita. First let me say that I and my sons have been dining with Luna Maya since they opened in Virginia Beach so many years ago. We truly enjoyed the food, atmosphere and service. All of which were consistently wonderful. Fast forward to the last couple of visits. The food us bit consistently good. Mt son's burrito, which he gas always ordered & enjoyed, was served without the requested cheese and was inedibly spicy. Painfully and disgustingly so. When we FINALLY got the waitress' attention, she gave him an incredulous look and removed it. We then waited for a VERY long time to see her. During that time, he emptied his drink, water, & mine...they were NEVER refilled. The service was consistently slow, unconcerned, inattentive and just downright poor. The atmosphere was loud, hectic and absolutely not, in any way, conducive to an enjoyable experience. We walked out, a great deal lighter in the wallet, and very disappointed. We won't go back and will stop recommending it to others. read more

This is by far one of the best restaurants I have been too. The is absolutely delicious. If you like food that is filled with flavor, this is the place. The drinks are absolutely amazing. The service was fantastic as was the ambiance. There were a couple of things that happened that are not worthy of mentioning as they were taken care of right away by the manager. We went to the new location and will not go back. In Texas, they'd call it "all hat, no cattle". The server was incompetent and uncaring. Food came in waves; we were finished before the last diner in our party got served. Ordering drinks took forever and getting served drinks took longer. My food was average, much akin to a TV mexican dinner. My wife's dish (tamales) was awesome, but cold to the touch. Similar experiences for the rest of our party. Heck, we didn't even get silverware until midway into our dining experience. We are former customers, and have no intention of going back. read more
