Evms was hosting pre interview dinner here so I was able to check this place out. I'm usually not too big on Mexican but figured it was worth learning more about their medicine program. I stuck with their fish tacos, thought it was okay.. I tried some of their shredded beef tacos as well which was a bit dry, nothing amazing. For dessert I got the tres leches, which was actually decent. It's better than most other tres leches I've tried except for shyndigz-they are unbeatable. The flan looked bleh, rum cake looked really good but applicant said it was dry and didn't finish it. Service was pretty fast and for the most part I had no complaints, they filled our water and seemed attentive. However, the waitress accidentally knocked over the applicant's beer, which was okay, but when she refilled it she only filled it a quarter of the way up-the amount in the glass before she knocked it over...that didn't bode too well, especially since evms was paying and tip was already included. The senior resident complained to manager and the applicant got a full glass of beer and an apology. Overall, I think staff were nice, maybe just an off day. taquitos and luna maya salad are to die for!! virgin mojitos are yummy too! the tres leches cake is not soaked overnight, it seems to soak "on order" but the flan is ok. they should add mexican hot chocolate (drink or cookie) to menu. read more

Tastes are delicious and authentic. The spicy jalapeño guacamole was fiery hot but still incredible. Tried the tamale and stuffed poblano. Two great dishes! The food there was really good but the service was terrible. We had a party showing up and with 4 other there they would not let it sit at our table until people showed up. The waitress was rude and did not offer us to get more drinks. We had to ask for everything, it was never offered. We sat for over an hour and she did not offer of more water after we had paid. Its very gorgeous inside! I got a chipotle enchilada it was ok. The rice was bland and the beans were black beans not refried like most places. I got a mojito which was good but $8 for a regular glass. I don't like that the margaritas are served in the same glass. Most places have larger sizes for margaritas. My enchilada was $19!! After years of being aware of this place, the opportunity to visit finally came. It was worth the wait! Beyond any shadow of doubt, it is one of the jewels in the crown of Ghent eateries, adding serious weight to the words unique and authentic. As you walk in, the main dining area is a wide open, welcoming space with a very tall ceiling. Right off I felt relaxed and ready to dig into some good food. As always, drinks are first. I tend to look for local brews on tap. I like it fresh and they had something right up my alley. The theme was kept in line with a choice tequila. Next were the chips and salsa. Both were extraordinary. The chips were thicker than usual with a deep corn taste. The salsa had a chipotle mixed in which gave it that signature smoky taste but without the heat. We also added some fresh guacamole. It had the typical ingredients but it was the tastiest we've had in the area. For the main course, we had the vegetarian tamale and the mushroom quesadilla with a side of jalapeno cornbread. They both came with a hefty serving of rice and black beans. You haven't had tamales like this anywhere in Hampton Roads. If you're familiar with the taste of fresh, sweet corn straight off the stalk, this will take you there. As a bonus, niblets of corn were speckled throughout. I could go on, but you go there instead. If you've had mushroom quesadilla before, you have an idea of what to expect. However, the mushrooms got a proper treatment of a marinade that just made the taste like no other. They were nice and thick and full of texture as well. The jalapeno cornbread was simply a treat. It was very succulent. It came in two slabs cut and presented fancifully on a saucer. It was as moist as a cake but savory and sweet at the same time. For those who can't stand too much heat, the jalapenos did not register. They offered flavor without the sting. Last but not least, the service was commendable. This is one of the best restaurants in Norfolk. The food is excellent and considering nearby restaurant prices, the prices here are in line with the rest of the market. I've sampled all of the entrees on the menu and several of the appetizers. The entree portions are large, and on the heavier side, so sampling a couple of appetizers as a substitute for an entree isn't a bad idea here. The tamale seems to be their specialty---and they are delicious. Their salsa and guacamole are good and fresh too.They serve up some great original cocktails...personally I recommend trying the "margatini" if you like margaritas and don't mind a little spice (there's chipotle salt on the rim of the glass). If you arrive between 7pm-9pm, expect at least a short wait for a table, with a longer wait on Fri/Sat. Loved this restaurant. I got the chorizo tacos and they were amazing. The chorizo was so flavorful and spicy and the slaw was a great complement - cool and vinegary and smoky. The maragaritas were ok, pretty standard and nothing special, but the mojitos were awesome. Tasty fresh guacamole too, but stick with the regular. The "spicy" wasn't actually spicy and tasted like they just sprinkled some cumin and red pepper on top of the regular guac. read more

This place stays busy and good for them. The food is really good and I have enjoyed myself every time I've been. The reason for 3 instead of 5 is that I find their prices to be excessive considering a lot of the items are stewing in food warmers waiting to be scooped to a plate. You definitely get your monies worth with the margaritas....but that's about it. The food is way over priced at this restaurant. I ordered the Holy Moly burrito for $9. It came in a plain tortilla, plain as can be with no sauce on top and no sides and was certainly not worth $9. The chips and salsa that you pay $4 a bowl for come from a bag like Tostitos and are hard and stale. My husband and I had a couple of happy hour margaritas ($6) a piece, which were really good, 2 meals, chips and salsa, and the cheese dip and our bill was over $70. Very busy restaurant and Luna Maya is a success story in Norfolk. I'm truly happy for them! I do have to say I've only been there a couple times, but that's because I was taught by a Mexican friend of mine how to make a lot of dishes and I'm just picky when it comes to eating out. Unfortunately, I ordered the tamale entrée. If you cannot take the time to really make them just don't offer them! The shredded beef was delicious, but the glob of sweet corn mess underneath was just silly. We alerted the waiter who didn't seem alarmed. My husband killed it with his flip flop before it ended up in our hair. Nasty. I've eaten at Luna Maya numerous times and have enjoyed the cuisine immensely; however, I recently had the privilege to deal with the management team in setting up a farewell dinner/reception for a co-worker who was leaving the area. The manager, Celia, did an exceptional job of meeting our needs before, during and after. The service was simply fantastic and extremely professional.
