I finally visited one of the newer additions to Cross Keys, and I have to say I left very disappointed. While I did enjoy the street corn, broccolini and agua Fresca. However the crab queso and arrachera were underwhelming, and the quesadilla was very bland. The arrachera, in particular, was extremely tough. Even with a sharp knife, I could barely cut through the steak, which made it almost impossible to eat. When I finally managed to cut it, it had little to no flavor. The queso was also disappointing--it was more like stringy melted cheese rather than the traditional creamy dip. I spent over $100 on food and left feeling let down. That said, it's still a nice restaurant overall. I visited on a beautiful day and was able to enjoy the patio, and the service was quite good. Our waiter was both attentive and helpful however I would likely not go back for food. read more

I had dinner with my husband and had a nice time. It's a new Mexican restaurant in the updated Cross Keys. Although Oaxaca is in its name, I didn't find the menu to be particularly Oaxacan (there was is one mole dish). It has dishes from around Mexico to Tex-Mex dishes. Despite the regional nod in the name of the restaurant, I think the menu is fairly standard Mexican fare for restaurants in America. We had two starters: taquitos de pollo (shredded chicken wrapped in a fried corn tortilla on a bed of guacamole topped with queso fresco, Mexican crema, and red cabbage) and aguachile de camaron (shrimp marinated with lime juice, red onion, serrano, and cilantro; topped with fried tortilla strips, cucumber, avocado slices, and a side of tortilla chips). Both were good versions of dishes I enjoy. Next, we had the Luna Caesar Salad (grilled romaine lettuce, fried tortilla strips, homemade Mexican Caesar dressing) with added grilled chicken, which was good, too (the dressing tasted pretty traditional to me, but the salad was good overall - they didn't skimp on the chicken; I think the salad ended up being equal parts grilled chicken to romaine lettuce). Lastly, we had enchiladas. You choose shredded beef or chicken tinga and then smothered in salsa verde, salsa roja, or mole. We went with shredded beef and salsa roja. I found the filling to be dry and the salsa roja to be watery and bland. Not my favorite enchiladas. We also tried a few drinks. I had a cocktail special they had that night for International Women's Day - La Chingona - which was a little too sweet for me. My husband stuck with their mezcalita - classic, one classic with spice. For my second drink, I went with their Topo Chico Ranch Water (guava flavor), which I loved. The service was good, and the restaurant is comfortable. The food was okay to pretty good, but I definitely think it's a great place for snacks and drinks on the patio when the weather warms up. I wanted to love it. but I didn't. First the good. Luna Oaxaca is located in Village of Cross Keys. It's a cute restaurant with a good vibe. There's a lot of parking in the area.. but right now it's limited because of the snow. The staff is friendly, especially the bartender Juan. For me, it's a nice spot for Happy Hour or a first date. The Queso Fundido was good. They have a few good options in the Mocktail Menu I tried the Fresa Linda There's bad was the food. I wasn't wowed like I wanted to be. My meal wasn't terrible, I just wasn't pleased. I actually needed up going somewhere else to get my son takeout. I order the Aguachile.. my friend makes it and I love it. The one here was t as good and the shrimp didn't marinate in the citrus long enough to fully cook so it was raw. like still grey. I also wanted to try the Rosita Mocktail but they were out of ingredients and couldn't make it :( Maybe they were just having a not so great night when I came. If you're looking for a really delicious Mexican restaurant that fuses traditional family recipes with a modern edge, then Luna Oaxaca is your place. The food, service and atmosphere was outstanding. Helped a good friend celebrate his birthday for brunch and it did not disappoint. We were a party of 28, and to be brutally honest this place is real accommodating for large groups. The staff and service were top notch. Nobody had a bad dish, everything was delicious from the freshly made guacamole and queso fundido, the street tacos and burritos, salads. The traditional Mexican breakfast dishes such as chilaquiles and huevos rancheros. The cocktail list is phenomenal. They also do happy hour every day including the weekends from 2-5pm. They have really nice outdoor patio for seating now that the weather is getting really nice. Everything was a 10/10, highly recommend. And yes I will be coming back with my friends. read more

Pretty much every part of this dining experience could have been better. I had a 2:30 pm reservation on a Friday afternoon with a friend and, upon walking in, no one was at the hostess stand. The establishment wasn't very busy, with most people sitting at the bar. I waited for a while, then walked further into the restaurant and, even then, when someone finally walked up, I had to speak to him first. So, we weren't off to a good start... I ordered guacamole and, while it was tasty, I don't think the $15 price tag is justified. The shrimp tacos from the happy hour menu were underwhelming, and my friend said the same thing about her chilaquiles. Neither of us commented on the margaritas we ordered, so suffice it to say everything was just kind of...meh. I reckon I would give it one more try under some last-minute circumstance, but there's much better Mexican cuisine to be found elsewhere. read more

On a recent lunch with one of my friends we decided to try Luna Oaxaca since I had previously seen they were open and serving brunch. We both agreed Luna Oaxaca was a good choice. Luna Oaxaca is one of the newer restaurants in the Cross Keys center, nestled off to the side by itself. The sleek yet minimalistic decor of the interior is nice and open, and they have outside seating for those warmer days and nights. Although we went for brunch, I wasn't really in the mood for their brunchy items since most have eggs and I'm no egg eater. So, I settled on the Carne Asada tacos since tacos are always my go to when trying a new Mexican restaurant. I also ordered a side of chips & salsa to see how well they did those. The chips & salsa were pretty tasty; I could've used a bit more spice in the salsa but that's my personal taste buds. The Carne Asada tacos were seasoned well and cooked perfectly. And actually, filled with meat and pico de gallo. My friend ordered the veggie tacos and said those were quite tasty too. I'm always on the hunt for a good Mexican restaurant and Luna Oaxaca is one I'll definitely make a trip to again to try some of their other menu items. This is a lovely restaurant. It's bright and clean with lots of windows. Everything was well appointed. Service was slow. I was often out of water. We asked for hot sauce and had to ask again, after we finished our guacamole. The food was delicious. The menu is quite varied my heuvos rancheros were cold around the edges and the tortillas were a bit hard. My first visit at Luna Oaxaca with reservations for dinner and we were seated immediately. Our server was Ronnie. Service was prompt with carafe of iced water poured tableside. We started off with drinks and margaritas were delicious. My mezcal margarita with fresh hibiscus was smoky and not too sweet, the sugared rim was nice touch. For appetizer, we shared the empanadas con pollo. I liked the balance of the toasted empanada pastry packed with shredded chicken and ooze of cheese. The chipotle aioli was a nice complement with a touch of subtle heat. I was not a fan of the side house salad though the red onions could've been served as salsa criolla instead. Ours had too many lettuce ribs. On to the entree and I chose the enchilada potocinas con camarones y mole. This dish was delicious and the amount of mole was perfect, except I was disappointed to taste chopped shrimp. I hope they consider changing to whole pieces as each could easily fill 2-3 plump ones per enchilada (the dish came with 3). And para postre, we finished with the in-house made tres leches cake. Generous serving of sponge cake, creamy milk poured over with a dolop of fresh whipped cream and a sprinkling of canela. It was delicious. Located in the Village of Cross Key, it shares parking with other shops. Same center with Cece, Nine Tailed Fox, Blue Mercury, and Always Ice Cream. Note the walk-up has a ramp, however caution there is a marked step at the entrance door. I do agree with others the noise levels are earsplitting. read more

We decided to try this new Mexican place at Cross Keys. We were able to get a table for 2 without a wait on Sunday at 6. It was very good. The margarita was very good and we had the mole chicken and the salmon which was prepared with toasted tortilla chips, sweet potatoes and beets. Both were quite good though the salmon was a bit overcooked. The entrees were about $30 each which is a bit steep but you can get a taco plate for $16. We'll be back to try more! read more

I grew up on the border with Mexico and lived in Mexico for a time, so my standards for Mexican food are pretty high. Keeping that in mind I would say that this place is pretty good. I had the Mole with chicken, which was the best I've had in the US. The sauce was a bit thick, though, compared to the gold standard in Puebla, Mexico. They need to work on that a bit. The guacamole was good and I like the way it was served in the molcajete.We shared some empanadas that were very good. What I like most about Luna Oaxaca is the ambience. The space is light and airy. The serving staff were also above and beyond. Super attentive and friendly. All in all I had a lovely evening! read more

This was our first time here. There's not a ton of indoor seating which explains why reservations fill up fast. You could eat at the bar. The outdoor seating is great but most of it is uncovered. There are a handful of tables that are under the building awning. Overall, the restaurant was cool inside. Food was delicious and prepared well. We started with the guacamole. My second time here and a much better experience. The service and cuisine were five stars last time, but I had much better company on this visit. Three of us arrived and were promptly seated on the patio on what was a beautiful Baltimore evening. Marissa was our server and she was prompt, pleasant and professional. We began with an IPA and some margaritas. I enjoy the Skinny Margarita here. It's got a kick to it yet is less sugar and not as sweet as a regular margarita. The guacamole was fantastic with house made tortilla chips. The empanadas were good, not great. Too much cheese and not enough shredded beef. They were tasty but I'll definitely try something different next time. The fajitas were muy rico and enough for leftovers just like the fried chicken tacos. Yummers! The ambiance is nice here. We had lunch at Luna Oaxaca today. I arrived early and was surprised there was no seating for overflow or waiting customers. I chalked that up to this establishment being freshly opened. The guacamole was fresh but on the salty side and not as "medium spicy" as I would have expected. My Pulpo (grilled octopus) was basic. There was no outstanding flavor/spice. The accompanying carrots were flavorless and the chorizo mashed potatoes were lacking chorizo. The guava mezcal margarita was nice. As we were leaving, we were offered a Tshirt with Luna Oaxaca written on the front. It should have said: "My palate went to Luna Oaxaca and all I got was this lousy T shirt" read more

Didn't get any alcoholic beverage so I can't say how they are but their non alcoholic drink with the ginger beer was pretty decent, I believe it was called the Lolita... I can't remember the name but it was a purple colored drink. The inside of the place is pretty and decorative so that's a bonus. They have a patio which is cool but it was too windy to sit out there yet. Omg loved the crunchiness of the taquitos with all the toppings. They never got soggy at all!!! Then my husband and I ordered Street Tacos. We got tacos Al Pastor and the Carne Asada Tacos. The hot sauce was fire!!!! Loved it. Perfect blend of flavors for each tacos. We also enjoyed the Pollo Enchiladas with refried beans and Mexican rice. We just couldn't get enough. The food was amazing. As a dessert we ordered the Tres Leches cake! This cake was to die for... left us wanting more. As a result of loving this food, we got an order of the street tacos and taquitos. Even though it was a 40 minute drive for us, we will definitely be eating there again. Tried this place for the first time with friends tonight. And I wanted to like it. I really did. The location is nice, and the outdoor patio is wonderful for nice nights. And the server was attentive. But, I can't recommend the food at all. My friend's enchiladas were cold. My other friends's tacos had half a large onion on every taco. After the long walk thru Cross Keys just to find the Luna Oaxaca. Poor Signage, got tithe restaurant patio that is very barren. Need planters and color other than the grey tables and plain concrete. Service was slow and relaxed. Ordered Chips and Salsa. No heat in the salsa, but for an upcharge you can have a 1 oz soufflé cup of ground scotch bonnets. No thanks but if you add a teaspoonful of it to the salsa , be careful. Chicken Taquitos were good , but I have never seen purple cabbage over taquitos and I have been in Mexico a lot in my time here on Earth. It would have been nice to have both entrees brought at the same time . I had the Arrachera , a skirt steak that I ordered medium rare. Medium well is what I received and the Oaxaca was a layer of gummy cheese. The vegetables were seasonal. I didn't know cauliflower and purple cabbage was a spring vegetable especially in a Mexican restaurant . Drinks were good , the house Margarita spicy. New restaurant in the area, wanted to try it out. Went on Cinco De Mayo, so expected a wait and it to be busy. It definitely was, which was good to see. Hostess was very open about having to wait for a table but was very helpful. We got sat and no one came over to our table, we had to flag our hostess down again to get someone over. I attribute it to it being new and also busy for the holiday. We sat outside, they had tables with and without umbrella coverings and it was a nice view. The guac was made fresh and tasted great, my friend had shrimp tacos which were delicious and I had the Arrachera with shrimp on the side and it was done beautifully. The mango margarita was also fantastic. Overall about $100 for two people, so a little pricey but not terrible. Will definitely go again! read more

This newly opened restaurant is a delight. The theme is upscale Mexican cuisine, but the prices are quite reasonable and food is excellent. Consider going on a pleasant evening and request an outdoors table. They don't accept reservations for the outdoor tables (only indoors) but they have a very large area with plenty of tables with umbrellas to shield the sun. The al fresco experience is among the best around - quiet and picturesque. I should also note that while Google labels the prices as in the $30 - $50 range, most entrees are in the $25 to $35 range. Perhaps the Google range included appetizers. In any event, food and service are excellent. Our server, JuanCarlos, was a charmer. read more

Don't be fooled by the Cross Keys location. This low brow cantina parades itself as a refined hub for Mexican fare. Neither the ambiance nor the taste of the food matters if the customer service is nonexistent. The bartender and the manager were unabashedly disrespectful when we expressed displeasure with the taste of a drink. The bartender listened only to respond, not to hear. He repeatedly asserted the drink was classically made and refused to hear our desire for a drink made to taste. The manager abruptly chimed in to say that "it was fine if we didn't want the drink, but he refused to take it off of our check." He then poured the drink out and walked away. To be clear, we were not loud, rude or argumentative, and we never asked to have the drink taken off of our check. In fact, we were never asked what we wanted. Their position was squarely centered on how the drink was made in the classic manor, but the irony is that when we ordered the drink, we were told we could choose how we wanted the drink made, and ultimately, we simply wanted the drink remade to our specifications. After a very unsavory discourse, the drink was remade to our specifications, but the assumption that we wanted a $25 drink removed from our check after one sip was not only insulting but ridiculous. I shared this incident with colleagues at Johns Hopkins and with my neighbors in Cross Keys, only to learn they had similar experiences. They all agreed to discontinue patronizing Luna Oaxaca, and so should you. read more

We've been here twice since it opened and both times the food, and the service, are just so-so. First time we sat at a table & had to keep asking waiter for service. No one ever came to see if we needed anything or if we wanted a second drink. Second time we sat at the bar, expecting more attention & still didn't get it. Neither bartender asked us if we wanted a second drink or even dessert! I had the Avocado caesar salad with salmon, which was overcooked. Rest of the salad, aside from the avocado, consisted of lettuce & a few meager slices of cucumber. Not a very exciting meal but I just wanted something lighter. Skinny margarita was better than their regular margarita for some reason. Overall, I might give restaurant a third try but we've been pretty underwhelmed with Luna Oaxaca. A group of friends had dinner there. The food was really good and the service was fine. BUT the noise level inside the restaurant was so high that we could barely hear the person at the desk. There is a long and very noisy bar. I didn't see any sound dampening measures inside - only a lot of hard surfaces and a high ceiling. The only choice was to eat on the terrace, which we did despite it being a little chilly. read more
