This was my first visit to a Lupe Tortilla. We live in Kingwood and were on our way home from Webster when we decided to get something to go and my wife found Lupe on Yelp. I ordered the Chipotle Smoked Ribs with an extra order of beans. Lets just start with the freakin salsa. Close to the best I've ever had and the chips are really lite. Arrived at the restaurant an hour before closing yesterday, and we didn't want to be those late customers so we had looked online before arriving and planned to have our entire order ready when the waiter came so we could be in and out. Told a blonde hostess we were for 2 and she was kind about it and let another girl with curly hair know and this girl rolled her eyes and asked us patio or indoors and we said either is fine. We brushed off the eye roll but discussed it when we sat but moved on. 2 male servers looked at us on the patio and we smiled thinking one of them was about to come by but they looked down and continued walking. 15 minutes passed and nobody ever came by or acknowledged us in any way so we stacked up our menus and silverware and left to a restaurant down the street. Was our first time here. They offered us a small tortilla with their famous fajitas to try. The fajitas might be the only thing good on the menu. My son ordered a burrito and I had the grilled plate which had a piece of steak some sort of stuffed chicken and 3 shrimp. The rice and beans are nothing special not enough flavor in the rice. They give you salsa with chips and a small bowl of beans, were we suppose to eat the beans with a spoon or use it as a topping for the chips ? Bottom line this place is super over priced for mediocre food. For two people it was over $70 with tip. Won't be back. read more

So my husband and I were looking into having dinner this night. We always sit at a bar where ever we go but unfortunately we got bad serves from the bartender named Rob. We get to the bar and he welcomes us, and asked what kind of drinks we would like. Both my husband and I asked for Jose Cuervo with Grand Mariner on the rocks Tajín on the rim. As soon as we ordered this and we received our drinks came out.. the drinks were way tooo sweet. I know he did not add Grand Mariner at all. So we sat our menus on the side letting him know we are ready to order. A couple shows up next to us and they received service right away,but yet he by passed us at least 4 times when we were ready to order in the last 20 mins. My husband and I noticed that he checked up on everyone else other than us meanwhile he was putting orders in for another couple next to us. The couple to our right was getting they're food served,but he still by passed us without asking if we were ready to order. But he checked up on everyone else other than us. We are great tippers when it comes to customer service. We asked him to close the tab and he did not hesitate to get us our check. We paid our tab and tipped a penny unfortunately for terrible service. We've never done that. Anyone who takes care of us always gets between $20-$30 tip. It was his loss. So we left complained to the manager and came to El Tiempo and we came here and got way better service. Rob is the bartenders name. We will never be back. They're is nothing Mexican about this place. There was a delay in the food coming out, because the cook/chef came out to apologize and check up on us. But after our food was delivered, that was it. It's difficult to rate what is THE BEST Mexican restaurant in the area: there are so many to chose from. Clearly, some are better than others. This actually is one of my favorites but it's a little hidden from view from Bay Area Blvd. The upside of that is that your not looking at the street during your meal and it's a relatively quiet place to hang out. The downside is that it is easy to drive past without seeing it, even though they do have a sign on the road. But make sure that you check this place out. After all the Lupe hype from Houstonians living in Austin, they being excited about the two new Lupes recently opened there, I had to come all the way to Clear Lake to finally give it a try. Tuesday night at 6:30, no wait, no parking hassles, that's nice. Immediate seating in our preferred patio table, also nice. Prompt delivery (and regular refills) of warm, thin, crisp chips, good. First impression: this is a cross between Pappasito's (high prices) and Casa Ole: chain Tex-Mex with decor leaning toward the tacky side. Salsa is not my favorite (it's the puréed fresh kind with no smoke or heat), but the charro beans served with the chips are interesting. Bartender on this night has no ability to craft a fresh Rita on the rocks without using a horrid super-sweet mix. Why, oh why?! Is fresh lime juice unavailable here? Maybe I'm the only drinker who prefers my cocktails to not taste like a candy store? "Skinny" may be lo-cal, but that's not the same thing as non-sweet. Maybe the waiter didn't understand what I meant and couldn't communicate this to the bar? Next time, I'll stick to always delicious Dos XX with a squeeze of lime. We tasted the much celebrated beef & chicken fajitas ordered by the locals in our group. Verdict: very tender and clearly well marinated (maybe a bit too salty), but not the best I ever ate. I was more impressed with the generous accompaniments like roasted poblano and red jalapeños plus fantastic large flour tortillas. The 1/2 pound marked for 1 person ($14-17 depending on options) could easily feed 2 sensible adults after the chips & cocktails course. My shredded chicken & cheese stuffed poblano was HUGE - enough for two meals. Tasty, but way too cheesy and dry. A smokey chile or ranchero sauce on top and way less cheese would really improve this dish. Refried beans on the side were porky & excellent, the rice a bit dry and greasy. Apparently, this location used to sport some kind of playscape, but after expanding the outdoor seating the playscape is no more. The kids in our group did enjoy their mild chile con queso for chip dipping and the Blue Bell ice cream for dessert. Our Houston-area friends and family love this place, so I'm sure we'll be back. Next time, I'm going to try the tortilla soup or fish tacos, both of which have several glowing reviews. Back in Austin, however, there are so many wonderful independent Tex-Mex and otherwise Latin-inspired joints to love, I doubt I'll ever make it around to try the Lupe in my neighborhood. P.S. If it makes the Lupe-lovers feel any better, let me confess that I *do* with tender nostalgia adore Chuy's (a national chain today, but one that began with a single restaurant in Austin), so let the queso-slinging begin! I had never been here, but after a meeting in Houston with co-workers, this place was mentioned for lunch, and since I was just a passenger, and I love Mexican food, I was game! And it was good! I was impressed! We got here about around 11:15 am on a Wednesday and got seated right away as they weren't busy. We were seated in a little alcove by ourselves which was cool so we could talk shop. Our waitress was prompt and super sweet; wish I had gotten her name. She brought us chips and salsa and took our drink order. I loved the chips, nice and thin and crispy but wasn't fond of the salsa. It was more like pico de gallo, and I don't like chunky salsa. They also served a bowl of charro beans with chunks of ham/bacon/delicious piggie in them and those were delicious! Of course we got queso and this was some of the best queso I've had in a long time! I ordered the green chicken enchiladas off the lunch menu which came with rice; they were delicious! Yummy chicken covered in a green tomatillo sauce; I got two with plenty of rice and it was a LOT of food for lunch. I think it was $8.95, so not a super cheap lunch, but definitely got a lot of food. I could totally see sharing this with someone, or taking half home for dinner, or lunch the next day. My co workers were pleased with their choices as well; my one co worker had just been here the day before so he definitely loves this place!! I would for sure come here again! For those who live in Austin you have NO idea what you have been deprived of... If only they would branch out and entertain up here deep in the heart of Texas. Anytime I have to drive down to Humidity City this is always on my list. When you sit at your table the chips, salsa, and borracho beans are delivered. The beans are served warm but more like a warm salsa. Oh how I miss them already. I ordered the lunch special and chose 2 crispy beef tacos and the beef enchilada. The tacos are like these half folded/open crispy shells that are great. The beef enchilada was also wonderful. I decided to go diving into the plate next to me and couldn't believe how wonderful the beef faijitas were. I didn't regret my order but I sure did want an additional helping of that wonderfully marinated and cooked meat. Oh and let's not forget about the Tortilla's... I have never had tortillas made like this, that taste like this, and ooo so large - focus now- I am talking about tortilla's. Even though it's a chain, I really like Lupe Tortilla! I really like the salsa and the beans they serve with the chips. They have great fajitas, jalapeños so spicy you'll cry "Aye Chihuahua!!" (as mi abuela use to say), and I LOVE the size of the tortillas AND the fact that they are so thin and warm! Hubby LOVES the queso, but I just don't care for queso ... too salty! Margaritas are really good, but the Skinny Margaritas do not give me a buzz so to me, that defeats the purpose of drinking them!! Instead I order the hand shaken platinum margarita without salt and two of them seem to always hit the spot! We always ask for Luis because he goes above and beyond to anticipate our needs, but also because with some of the other servers, service can be hit or miss. read more

I've been listening to my co-worker rave about this place FOREVER! So, while we were in Houston area I decided we should give it a try! First of all it's behind a Best Western. We got there and were told it would be a 35 minute wait. They would text us when our table was ready. Less than 15 minutes later we were seated. Yay! We waited several minutes for the server to come take drink orders and then finally the chips, salsa and pinto beans arrived. YUM! The red sauce is dark and roasted and smoky. The chips are thin and crispy just like you want them to be. The beans were pretty tasty too. Then we ordered the queso with BACON! Y'all know how much I love bacon by now! It. Was. Awesome! Even my kid who doesn't eat the chunks in the queso was eating them. The queso came with a side of jalapenos. Those were good. Not too hot, went great with the rest of the food. My youngest ordered the chicken fingers. One was almost as big as his head. (See photo) He loved them and the fries. My middle kid ordered the Lupe's chicken without all of the veggies on top, just cheese and only rice. He LOVED it. Scarfed it down. There is something about the way they cook their chicken breasts...I can't describe it besides flame-grilled and juicy! I ordered the Pollo Espinaca. It was a new menu item. It's their amazing chicken smothered in spinach and artichoke dip basically with jack cheese and a creamy cilantro sauce. OMG I almost died!!! It was the most amazing food I think I may have ever tasted! My wife got plain old cheese enchiladas with rice. She said it was ok. My oldest kiddo is particular. He ordered cheese enchiladas with flour instead of corn tortillas with no onions, all rice. This is his usual order. I watched the server write it out specifically. I'm pretty sure he long-handed the whole order. Anyway, the food came out and his enchiladas were made with corn tortillas. So the young lady who brought them to the table had a little bit of attitude and tried to set it down in front of him anyway. We were like no, they are wrong...take it back. So she begrudgingly did. Our server came over and apologized profusely. The Chef de Comida also brought food out and apologized. The server's name was Hunter. His name was kind of fitting because he was hard to find. Ivan was the server at the station next to ours and he was very attentive, so I know it's not the norm for their whole staff to be scarce. Anyway, they brought out a new plate. Cheese enchiladas made with flour tortillas, but with rice AND beans AND with onion. The poor kid just gutted through it because he was afraid they would spit in his food at that point. LOL (He watches a lot of TV). So, they were nice enough to comp that meal, but the server never offered us dessert or anything. We had to ask for everything else. I will tell you their flour tortillas are as big as your dang plate (or face in my kids case) and the corn tortillas they bring to the table if requested are handmade and they are amazing. So, overall I would probably come her again just becaues i loved MY dish so much. I took half of my dish home and at it for dinner that night...it reheated nicely too! The rice was a bit mushy but the other stuff was so good I didn't even care! So, I highly recommend this place. Just don't come here if you are in a hurry!!!! read more

Have not been here in over 7 years and I have fairly fond memories. Well that was crushed tonight. My GF gave me 3 places to choose from and I picked Lupe, that was a mistake that I will not make again. My pepper shrimp brochette was so dry and tasteless. The plate came out so hot it could be considered a danger. The shrimp were dry and burned, totally tasteless. The rice had been so over cooked that it had no moisture. The beans had been so over boiled that they had holes from where the steam had come out. Giving them 2 stars is being kind. We were seated in a hallway in a table so small I had to keep rearranging my drink to be able to get to the chips and dip. Safe to say I won't be back. read more

My friend was charged her correct half plus tip but I was charged the entire $112.26. The restraint collected a total $180 for a $112.26 bill. Service, meh. Food is getting worse by the visit. Just "changed the recipe" for queso. This means "water the queso down to make more money". Literally a money grab. They changed the salsa a while back and went to a standard Mexican Restaurant fire roasted salsa instead of the fresh cut salsa they used to serve. The good (bad) news is that they SELL the old salsa to your table for a quarter per small bowl. Ridiculous . Crunchy tacos must now be eaten with a fork because they are actually tostadas. (I need to break this habit lol) For starters, it's a Friday night so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt on the issue of not having our drink orders or chips&salsa until 15 minutes after sitting down. Our waiter didn't really greet us, he just went straight into asking our order. The bean dip that they have with their salsa is SO ADDICTING. I had a hard time stopping. The salsa was alright. The chips were perfect. I ordered Chicken Flautas and was 100% satisfied. I was full by the second one (there were four total) Their rice & beans were also extremely tasty. Be prepared to spend a bit of money here. I didn't expect them to be so pricey. Overall a good experience and we'll definitely return! My wife and I are frequent visitors to the Lupe's off Grand Parkway in Katy. We just happen to be in Clear Lake and decided to try this location. We found out this one is owned by the OTHER brother. A little different menu. This location is tucked away off behind a hotel. Very interesting location. No view of the water here at this place, but very nicely landscaped. We sat outside for lunch in the great weather today!! Parking lot was not crowded for lunch on a Sunday at 12:30pm. Service was slow at the start. It took a little time for our waiter to get with us and then it took him some time to get us drinks. His service was below par at first, but then he really stepped it up. I would give our waiter 3.5 stars today for service. We ordered a Regular Guacamole for $5.95. Not really impressed! 2.5 stars for your Guacamole. Both my wife and I ordered the Asada and Pepper Shrimp. Cost of the plate is $22.95. It also took some time for the meal to come. Food was plentiful. Really nice looking steak and 3 large shrimp. The shrimp were really tasty. The carne asada was not as tasty and flavorful as the one in Katy. Not sure why? Probably a different recipe. Our waiter did tend to us during the meal refilling drinks and was a great guy to talk to. Food was 4 star today. Too bad your recipe is different than the one we like in Katy. I would have waited and drove home to have the famous Lupe Tortilla fajitas. I also believe your prices are higher than the location in Katy. The homemade corn tortillas....delicious!Absolutely worth the 7-10 min wait. The fresh pico salsa is spicy but keeps you coming back for more. I order an avocado and fresh cilantro and there is the best vegan taco around.! The service in the bar patio area is horrible, in the past 5 visits only once was the waitress not rude.
