We decided to stop here on the way back into Tucson from Show Low because La Casita in Mammoth was closed but let me tell you I am so glad that we got to try this place! Let me just say, the salsa alone is worth the trip!! The red mixed chili burros were great, but a bit more spice would have been nice. Also, we got the 4 burros for about $3.25 each!!! This place is a bit out of the way if you're driving from Phoenix to Tucson, but it was a pleasant surprise for yesterday's breakfast! It's located in a run-down strip of shops, of which only Lupe's is still up and running. I ordered the chilaquiles (my fave) and it did not disappoint! Our table had been given a squirt bottle of salsa, plus a small basket of chips, and individual ramekins for each of us -- you know, so you can double- and triple-dip to your heart's content! Also, the large bottle meant I didn't have to ask for more, plus I could top off my chilaquiles with the flavorful sauce! My dining companions got the daily special (2 corn tamales with rice and beans) and the huevos rancheros, respectively. Both were thoroughly enjoyed! And all our meals came with a super-fresh, buttered tortilla. Because you know, why not have both tortilla chips and a fresh tortilla with my tortilla-based breakfast entree (SOME OF US HAVE NO SHAME). The service was attentive (coffee was refilled 4 times!) and we felt very valued. For 3 meals plus 2 drinks (non-alcoholic, of course) it was around $33 with tax. You can't beat that! read more

I've only heard good things about this place...boy were they wrong. The tacos that I ordered had little to no meat inside, they were COLD, and the lettuce was beyond wilted! I don't know if their stove/oven/griddle were broken, but everything that was ordered (by the 6 of us) came out of the kitchen was even 'warm'! Never again!! read more

This was our first visit here and it was so much better than expected. The atmosphere was great, the place was clean, our server Jackie was a sweetheart, and the food was amazing. We had the green chili burro, chili relleno, and the chicken quesadilla. All were outstanding. And the guacamole and salsa were delicious to top everything off. Lupe's, ahh those were the days. I used to look forward to a quick stop at Lupe's when hunger struck after a hike in the area. The pink building, sadly, has seen better days. Maybe the owners are going for a rustic feel with the crumbling plyboard façade, but it seems more likely that lassitude has set in. Still, Lupe's used to be a diamond of Mexican cuisine in a rough crossroads. Now the food is mediocre at best and the ambience teeters precariously toward tawdry. The chimichangas are still melt-in-your mouth tender and crispy, but the green chili is thin and undefined, the salsa is bland and watery, and the chips are tough, flavorless, and ice cold. We have been customers of Lupe's for quite a few years. We were delighted when they moved from the old building to the new one. I don't think we have ever had a bad meal at Lupes. We love their authentic Mexican flavored meals. Their chili rellenos are outstanding as are there enchiladas, fajitas, tacos, tostadas, etc. No complaints from this bunch. They are always friendly and accommodating. We have no problem trekking from Oracle down to the Junction for a good meal. We will be more than happy when this Covid 19 virus is gone and we can get back to enjoying Lupe's and their great food. read more

After we went to the Biosphere 2, my husband and I got hungry and decided to join the friends we went with for lunch here. The food was good, and the service was all right. I still prefer La Casita if I'm in this area, but I'm okay with this place. If La Casita is closed during the summer, this is comparable and will be a decent substitute for it. read more

Stopped by here on Monday around 1230 pm and was the only customer. The waiter,(server #10) was on his cell phone when I entered and waived me to a table. Brought the menu, still talking on his phone. Took my order, still on the phone and brought the food, still laughing and speaking on the phone. Never saw him again during the meal. Never got a check. Went to the cash register, he's still on the phone, and he charges me for a drink I didn't order. I bring it to his attention and he asks me what I had ( telling his phone friend to "uno momento snd rings up the correct order. Never an apology, thank you, nothing. The food here is good but it is s mystery to me why they would put this joker on the floor waiting tables. Too bad... will never stop here again. HORRIBLE SERVICE!!!! read more

The food reminds me of Phoenix Mexican food in how its made. I'm told that Tucson makes their Mexican food the Sonoran way. At least the places I've eaten. I guess I really don't care for that way of preparation. I'm not sure how to describe the difference, all I know is Lupe's has saved me! Their food is delicious with large portions. We see this little place off to the side of the highway and wonder what it was like. Well we are very pleased. We ordered Huevo rancheros and chorizo and eggs. The proportions are huge! The refried beans are heavily. The flour tortillas came out warn and Buttery, Yum!! The salsa is exactly how I like it! The server was super nice and attentive. We will be back! read more

The epitome of terrible Mexican food with service to match. Made a trip to Catalina just to try this restaurant. Greeted by an unkempt woman with a hand wave in the direction of the eating area & told to seat ourselves. There was only one table with several people eating and a table in the corner by the entry with a single occupant who was not dining. He turned out to be the cook. When we ordered we asked if we could get our fajita steak medium rare, got a shoulder shrug and (without turning) she shouted to the cook seated behind her if that was possible. The cook said it was, and he did do a good job cooking it to the right degree. It was supposed to be a ribeye, but it was tough, chewy and unseasoned. We had been given a dsh of cups & large squeeze bottle of salsa. The chips were cold & hard, the salsa was not spicy or well seasoned, so we asked if a hotter or spIcier sauce was available. We were told yes, and a very small salsa dish was brought to us. It was vinegary, thin and awful tasting, Our dinner came with beans & rice. The rice had no flavor or seasoning and the beans were tasteless and had the texture of being blenderized. Very runny, cool and tasteless with a small sprinkling of unmelted shredded cheese on top. While the steak & vegetables were coked to the proper degree there wasn't even salt or pepper used to season them . The "guacamole" was nothing more than mashed avocado with nothing added to flavor it or season it. We asked for our check,, She brought us a check with no total and an extra non-itemized charge of $1.95. When we asked for a total on the bill she demanded to know how we were paying. We asked what she meant & were told she had to know if nit was a credit card or cash payment before she could get a total from the register. Ma extrade no sense to us, but told her it was cash.we then asked about the extra charge. She said it was for the extra salsa. We told her she should have informed us when we asked about it.. we would have refused it. She then started but yelling at us, telling us to get out.of the restaurant , leave now. We said we wanted to pay for our meal, still had not received a complete bill with a totalt due. She got hysterical.telling us to get out or she would make us get out, We placed what we thought we owed on the table & stood up to leave. We are elderly & disabled, so I guess it took us too long & she started yelling at us again. The cook came & stood between her & us until we got out the door. It was an experience not to be wished on anyone, but I do hope she gets some help with whatever problem She has. read more
