Lot of great hole-in-wall Mexican joints in Pasadena. Lupitas is certainly one of them. Decided to come here for lunch today and I was totally impressed by the freshness and quality of the food. They're located on strip lot in Sierra Madre Plaza. Parking is shared with other businesses and restaurants so it can be a challenge, especially during lunch hour. Your best option is street parking. The restaurant itself is small, but cozy. Prices are very reasonable and portions are just right. I ordered the beef taco and enchilada combo ($1) plate which comes with rice and beans. OMG so delicious! The shredded meat to vegetable ratio was perfect on the taco. Everything tasted fresh, including taco shell. The enchilada sauce was divine, loaded with melted cheesy goodness and shredded beef filling. What's not to love? A bit mild on the spiciness, but at least their was hot salsa present. Love the rice and beans as well. Great friendly staff and quick service. They actually go out of their way to accommodate you and get you seated, even when the place is full. Every time I come here (which is at least twice a month) I tell my family "This is my favorite restaurant..." after I take a bite. Everything is SO good and the service is so welcoming. Some of our favorite things are: burrito gordito con carnitas, pollo sonorense (BOMB!), cocido, and of course a hard shell beef taco! The salsa is drinkable. Lupita's is practically walking distance from my house so I have been extremely curious as to whether this place was any good, given the convenience factor. So last Thursday, my wife and I decided to give it a go and visit them for lunch. I ordered a chile relleno burrito (dry version) which went for $10 and she ordered a two soft taco combination plate. The service is pretty friendly, and the food did not take long to arrive. Our waiter provided the usual complimentary basket of tortilla chips that was accompanied by two kinds of mild salsa. What we noted overall with the food was that not overly heavy in terms of salt or oil, and had a feel of home style cooking. My wife, who is very particular about beef quality, noted that the carne asada here is quite good in tenderness and freshness. Overall, we find this place to be a refreshing discovery and great value compared to nearby Mexican restaurants in the area that about 3 or 4 dollars more for similar items. We'll be revisiting next time our kids need a fix for a Mexican lunch. read more

I'm so glad to have found this place right when I moved to my new apartment! The restaurant is tucked away in the corner of a small shopping center (same one as Plate 38). They close every day at 9pm -- take out available, of course! You can really tell that everything here is truly authentic Mexican comida and is made with love. I had the enchilada suiza (2 enchiladas w/ rice & beans) & my b/f had the shrimp ceviche. The ceviche had a generous portion :] and they had amazing flavor to it. I've had other ceviche in the past and some of them were so bland, but Lupita's ceviche was just how we both liked it. The lady who took our order was also very kind and patient with us as we decided what to order. I've decided that we will be coming back here. I cannot wait to try more items off of their menu... This place is really a hidden gem! It's in the plaza right across the Von's and I wouldn't have come across it if I didn't walk by it almost every day. I used the Yelp deal ($10 for $20) and our tab came out to almost $30 for two. The food was absolutely delicious! Way better than the Mexican food I've had other places (and I've had tons!) In my experience, most restaurants add too much salt to their food, but Lupita's was absolutely PERFECT! Upon being seated, they bring you chips and two different types of salsa. The red salsa was really watery, so it was hard to eat with the chips without dripping it everywhere. It's free, so I can't really complain. I had the Crisp Taco combo with a side of a Chile Relleno because I have alwayyyys wanted to try one. Let me tell you, it was SOOOOOOO DELICIOUS. I got both beef and chicken taco, and I'll have to say the beef was the better man. The chicken was so-so, so next time I will be getting two beef crispy tacos. My friend got the taquitos, and he was in heeeeaven! The prices are reasonable, but the only qualm I have is that they nickle-and dime you on certain things. For instance, a dollop of sour cream is $1.50! Combo dishes range from $7.50-$15, with more expensive options as well. I would definitely eat here again if I didn't have a coupon deal. We came here to take food to a dodger game. The dry burrito was the best as it was first time. We got the al pastor and carnitas. At first the label on the al pastor made us think it was wrong but their pastor is shredded and the carnitas was knife cut. Not the norm for me but it worksZ. The burrito was a decent size I mean more than I can eat but not humongous. The don't have loco de Gallo In the burrito. I asked for less rice more beans. Not sure if it was much less. Great food prepared quickly. Definately worth coming out to try. I spend a lot of time at a coffee house nearby and usually see this restaurant right as it's closing. Been meaning to try it out for a while. Had a few minutes before meeting up with my friend and headed inside to see what they could make that would be fast and cheap. Kinda disappointed this evening for dinner. Food was just okay. We had a party of 5, Bill was 105.00. I paid at the register not knowing they had tacked on a 20% tip on my bill. Before leaving I had left a 20 on the table as a tip. So they ended getting a 45% tip from us.. service wasn't even all that. If you're looking for a quick bite to eat that's tasty than stop on by Lupita's! I ordered the Chimichanga, which was standard, but not as crispy as I would like. The pico de gallo is delicious as well as the chips. Portions are very generous so don't try to finish everything in one bit or you will feel really full (like I did). The parking can get crowded so be prepared to circle around for street parking as tjis place is located in plaza with other food places. I give them 3 stars for free warm chips and two types of salsa (one of which I liked a lot!). I ordered a wet bean and rice burrito and asked for no cheese. they originally gave me one absolutely covered in cheese, and when I brought it back they apologized and brought it back to the kitchen... Where the cook half-hazardly scraped off some of the cheese... and then gave it back with cheese still on it. I gave it back again saying I couldn't eat cheese and they finally replaced the tortilla with the same insides. Beans tasted homemade. I have explored Mexican restaurants in Pasadena ,LA, Glendale. I like this Lupita's because it's truly not over spiced like the other food items in other Mexican restaurants especially thyme ingredient. I.e. Rice beans taco has its own distinctive flavor. I've been in Lupita's restaurant about four times have a small group of people who come to eat but the real reason I think they have a small crowd they are hidden way inside a little shopping mall. They are hidden in a corner. To find them you would need to pass a lot of cars in the parking lot plus pass a lot of shops to get there. As I was looking through the extensive menu, I happened to notice on the wall the special for the day, which was the pozole. Once I saw they had pozole, it was a no brainer to go with it. I don't think it's on the regular menu, although it should be. The pozole was a lot milder than I've had in the past, which I like.
