My relationship with Māla Market started via Uber Eats, and it's been a hot minute since I've supported their establishment due to ... budgeting. Today I needed some self care. Their sandwiches are excellent and the chips that that come along with the sandwiches make the perfect pair. I'm typically in town (thus the Uber Eats) and after a heavy workout I was craving something healthy-ish. So I made the trek to Hawaii Kai to finally visit in person. I got a little lost in the parking lot, but after a quick phone call they were kind enough to point me in the right direction (pro tip: nearest shop is Panda Express). It's down a little hallway near the pavilion. I would never know this because I rarely come to Hawaii Kai. Fast forward to ordering my food; they are fast. The assembly line is on point. And the eating area has a gorgeous view that's perfect for a lunch date or a girly fab sesh. Sandwiches as just as good as I remember and the cold brew kept me productive on my day off. read more

Every once in a while I feel like a sandwich. My preferred choices are places in Kaimuki where I can get mine on a sturdy sandwich bread - something like a yeasty focaccia that won't fall apart. But Mala Market can do a good job with their Dave's Killer Bread. The sliced meat sandwiches are the best here. I personally stick with roast beef. Everything is layered tight with cheese, lettuce, sliced tomato and cucumber, chopped purple cabbage, julienned carrot, and grassy sprouts. The 21 grain bread and all the veggies are great complex carbs that will leave you satisfied for a long time. Sandwiches come with Kettle ruffled potato chips, or a salad with good dressing - a pink goddess or green cilantro. The wrap is proper for holding on to your sandwich and the take out box is good for traveling. I am less sold on tuna, chicken, or shrimp salad. I know the shrimp salad liquid will seep into your sandwich bread and quickly make it soggy - and I find soggy bread ruins a sandwich for me. For add on options there is double meat, or avocado mash. Skip adding the avocado. And don't pay extra for the pickle. The ladies are very quick at putting together the sandwiches and not waiting long is a plus. If you want to eat it outside there are decent tables, plus additional shaded seating near the marina. The sandwiches at Mala Market are not my favorite. But they are freshly prepared, well constructed, and a good balance of protein and complex carbs. A solid choice in the area if you want to take something to the beach. read more

I went in late to work one day cause I wasn't feeling well and wanted to eat something fresh for lunch. One of my coworkers was wanting a sandwich with sprouts so I recommended Mala Market. Sandwiches are fresh and tasty, lots of veggies, and yummy bread. You can choose a side of chips or salad. The salad comes with a cilantro dressing, but I like the salad with the pink goddess dressing, which you can order on the side for a small charge. We ordered online so when I got there, our order was ready to go, and service was quick and friendly. It's near the harbor at Hawaii Kai Towne Centre so if you're especially sensitive to those smells, be mindful of that. Lots of outdoor seating at the mall to enjoy your meal! read more

Back this time for a wrap! I'm so excited that they now offer wraps (it's been a while since I've stopped in..!). I ordered the shrimp wrap with a side salad and it was delicious. So many veggies and I absolutely love both dressings that come with the order. The wrap completely filled me up and left me feeling good. I was a little disappointed that some of the lettuce pieces were rotten and I had to pick them out. The atmosphere is so peaceful and a great spot for me to have a quiet outside lunch on the water with my son! read more

Went to Costco and realized it was lunch time. Had to feed baby too. Hubs only agrees to sandwiches at lunch, so had to take advantage of this lunch. Can I make a sandwich myself for less than $14? Yes, but will it look this pretty and have that many veggies? Heck no. Veggies were sooooo good. Seemed like people were constantly in and out even if there was never a line. Not my turf so I didn't even know where it was and was pleasantly surprised to find it tucked in the back by the water. The workers are very nice. Place is clean if you don't look at the window sill (think food falls over the counter top where people eat...then dries up on the sill). Wanted chicken salad, but i just can't do fruits in my food. Don't like the taste, texture, nut'n. My fruits stand alone only. So I had the tuna...which unfortunately I found out when I was eating it had pickles or relish so made it a little sweet. But not a deal breaker but not my fave. Maybe they should write out the ingredients. Hubs had the pastrami. He said good but needed something saltier like salami added in. I requested delivery at 12:30 PM and received a confirmation email saying it would arrive between 12:30 and 12:50 PM. That worked for our 1 PM lunch schedule. At 12:55 PM, I called to check on the order and was told they were behind due to lunch rush. When you are managing a meeting with 45 hungry attendees on a tight schedule, that kind of delay is stressful. The food arrived at 1:15 PM. Some sandwiches came with side salads, but there were no forks included. I know some places require you to request utensils, but for a $750 order, you would expect basic flatware to be included. Thankfully, we had some on hand. Otherwise, we might have seen people eating salad with their fingers. Hawaii Kai does not have many options for group catering, which makes this even more disappointing. read more

Finally got to try mala market this weekend after it being on my list for a while! Got the chicken salad sandwich and it was amazing. I loved the freshness of the vegetables and the chicken salad itself had the right amount of sweet/savory balance. I paired that with a salad which included their green goddess dressing which was delicious and herbaceous! The chicken salad sandwich was my favorite because it had so much going on. The walnuts were the perfect crunch with nutty flavor. I was also loving the grapes too because it gave such a nice sweetness. If you don't like either of those items in your chicken salad I don't recommend that sandwich. My only complaint was the sweet iced tea which tasted like powdered fake sugar tea. They might as well call it Lipton tea. I was hopping for sweet tea made fresh like all their other items, but that was not happening with this tea. The service was good and quick. The ambiance inside the shop was small but outside it was gorgeous and the view of the canal was just picturesque. My dad and I split a tuna salad rollup and are full- each rollup is always bursting with delicious fresh salad ingredients including sprouts, cucumber, carrots, along with their delicious homemade creamy cilantro dressing. We stopped in today before hitting Costco. It's tucked in the back of the Hawaii Kai Town Center which has a ton of parking. I feel compelled to share what happened to me yesterday at Māla Market. And that's weird because I'm a pretty lazy person most of the time. Which is why it's taken me almost 24 hours to decide to write this. But first let's start off with what's great. The sandwiches. They're delicious. Pricey but good. Always fresh. Packed full of yummy goodness... Super Ono! Ok, now let's get down to the unfortunate business. I got to their shop at 2:30pm on Monday afternoon. Ordered a turkey and avocado sandwich and a chicken wrap. I then sat down to ENJOY MY SANDWICH at the tables provided by the establishment. Within about 10 minutes, a young girl came outside from the shop and began slamming the metal chairs and tables together. It was the kind of noise and clanging that make you jump when you're not expecting it. This employee continued to slam together the chairs and tables to bring them into the shop. It was GLARINGLY apparent she wanted to close up the shop and get us to leave. I should mention, we were not the only customers there. There were 5 of us that I counted. Everyone got up to leave. I understand that the shop closes at 3pm but this was totally rude and unacceptable. As I local person, I was completely shocked at this total lack of professionalism and aloha. Male Cashier was a little rude. Rudely placed his hand up towards my face to stop me from talking/ordering because I forgot to mention salad or chips.
