When prices are low something has to give. At Macado's it's flavor. Stopped in last night for a quick meal. I love soft pretzels so I ordered the pretzel's with beer cheese. The pretzels themselves were huge with a nice color that gave them an authentic look. Unfortunately, they looked better than they tasted. Generally flavorless, they alternated between chewy and stale in the same pretzel. The beer cheese was a gloopy plastic mess that had no beer taste--or much of any flavor other than a slight taste of onion. I followed that up with the mac and cheese. It came out in a ceramic baking dish that has me hopeful, but it was another let down. Limp and flavorless. It was like eating a void. I knew it was in my mouth, but it tasted of absolutely nothing. Service was friendly, so there's that. The restaurant itself has seen better days. The booth seats were a torn and cracked mess. No way those can be sanitized for COVID between patrons, but it is reflective of the overall experience--lackluster. So if getting nutrients at a low price is a goal, this place will fit the bill, but it will not taste of much of anything. This is the place to go if quantity is more important than quality but the idea of going to a buffet is more than you want to deal with. read more

Macado's is good, it's pretty old and they have a lot of the same decor inside but the food is good. They have soooo many sandwich choices from wraps to clubs to build your owns. They were out of fried pickles but the chips and queso was good, had onions though. The Mona Lisa sandwich was great actually, it was like an italian sandwich and the fries were cooked well. The wrap was good as well my sister got it and that's her go to at this restaurant. They also had amazing honey mustard... My favorite. The food was delicious! I went with 3 other guys and they all loved their food and watching sports. We got fish taco, black bean con queso, boneless wings, the Reuben, and pastrami reuben. Fish taco and black bean con queso were so good! Black bean dip was almost perfect except it was a little too cheesy but I managed to finish all and the tortilla chips. The wings were okay. I think buffalo wild wings's wings are better. The reubens were okay. My friends got them because they were on special deal ($5 each i think). Overall, our server was friendly and food was not bad. Craving a cheeseburger? Go somewhere else. Medium rare is medium well. The buns are cheapness, and not well made. The staff are very sensitive to the slightest criticism of the preparation; they go in the back and cry, they complain to the manager, and they refuse your tip because your comment is taken personally, without consideration for the fact that the comment was about the way the food is cooked, which is not the server's fault. The french fries (from Sysco) are not crisp, not delicious and are not cooked all the way through, because Macado's is about fast service, not great service. We love Macado's, just not the one in Harrisonburg. Virginia Tech, Radford, Lexington, they're all fine, but three times we've tried the Harrisonburg location and they are so severely understaffed that we have left. You have a fine product (in other towns), but we've given up hope here. There were plenty of open tables, one team party, and a handful of servers. We were told there were two cooks and another one was coming in. I'm sure they don't want to overstaff the restaurant, but understaffing will be it's demise. Absolutely no service! And there was no business for them to say they were busy. They should go ahead and close. There were four of us, my wife and my parents. The host threw the menus down in a booth, after we requested a table, but never told us that they had any tables or were all booths? Still don't know. After a considerable wait, the waitress finally showed up, and when we asked questions she told us, "she just takes the order and when it comes out asks who got what?" So no answer. My father ordered the Macadoo Flyer. It didn't have any ham on it. We would've complained, but the waitress never showed up again, except to leave the bill, long after everyone had finished. We were never offered refills on our drinks or inquiry's to see if everything was ok? We entertained ourselves since our booth was so close to the front as we watched several guests, show up, wait, then after several minutes of not being waited on, left...then the same scene was repeated time and time again. Personally, this place needs a completely new staff. Speaking of business the men's restroom was filthy. Needed cleaning. I can only imagine what conditions exist in the kitchen. When we walked in (about 30 of us), the host immediately said they couldn't accommodate more than 20. The restaurant was pretty empty at the time. Glad Harrisonburg finally has a great sandwich dining option. Some locals may think it is same as the old Spanky's downtown but it's not. The brothers split the business and Macado's was always consistent and clean, that is why they are still around and Spanky's is not. I've been eating at Macado's since my undergrad days at VT in the 80's and the Harrisonburg location met my expectations on our first visit a day or two after they opened. My favorites here are the bagel based sandwiches particularly the Dietrich's Delight and the Dr. Watson. Happy Hour specials on food and drinks will make this a busy place after work too. read more

Seems that your always understaffed , no one is EVER at the front door which means you have to wait for a server to seat you which could be awhile .. Been here a few times now. Never disappointed. They have a great Bloody Mary bar on Sunday's now. Good drink specials everyday. The food is tasty too. A very extensive sandwich menu. Have yet to choose a sandwich that I didn't like. They do have a sandwich here called the Hindenberg that is great for groups. Yes groups. My friends ordered the fish tacos and one of their many sandwiches. We also ordered beers. First to come out from the kitchen were my fries, and that took forever. The were served piping hot, but I wanted them with my wings, not as an appetizer. Almost 15 minutes later, our food started arriving. As soon as the server pit my plate down in front of me, I knew we were going to have a problem. Not only were the wings some odd and unnatural Orange color, they looked cold. I pushed one with my finger and it was ice cold. I sent the wings back, although the server seemed unbothered that I wasn't satisfied. Didn't apologize, just asked me what I wanted done when I told her that my food was cold. Around 5 minutes later, the new wings came out piping hot. Overall, still just ok. So I've ordered from here multiple times and I have to say if you live in Harrisonburg and haven't tried this place, you're missing out. My first order I got the barnyard sandwich with chicken bacon and egg sandwich with the banana chocolate croissant dessert and the grande nachos. The nachos were okay and it was cool how they let you put them together yourself, but I'm not a huge cheese wiz fan, however they were still good. The sandwich was absolutely of this world. The egg, bacon, and fried chicken combination was amazing and the chicken was cooked with a perfect crunch. The sweet potato fries were also delicious, and the dessert was insane with the perfect mix of croissant, chocolate, banana, and whipped cream. I've also tried the quesadilla which was really good, the ragtime sandwich with roast beef, bacon, and cheese which was super tender and flavorful, and the Mac and cheese which was average. The prices are pretty cheap considering the size of the sandwiches and there are so many options on the menu. I would definitely recommend eating here if you visit Harrisonburg. read more

My family and I stay at The Massanutten Ski resort once a year through a time share so when we are in town we usually come here multiple times that week because of there delicious subs and variety. This year it just wasn't the same. Food wasn't as fresh and good. Both times we came in there was no host at the front door and we had to wait several minutes for someone to acknowledge us with servers walking right past us. What really made me have to yelp my experience is this. My 3 year old son ordered the Mac & cheese for dinner and he ate it. My son who has never thrown up solids did. All night! She got everyone's food mixed up, didn't know which sandwich was which, and served the appetizer with the meal- which she stated came up AFTER our food was ready. If that was so, why was our food ice cold? I sent my sandwich back. Half of it was finally made correctly. Their club was horrible. Bad quality sliced lunch meat. Bacon was not fried fresh. We will never return here. The waitress was not concerned when we weren't happy with our food. If this is supposed to be a remake of the old Spanky's - they have no idea what they are doing.
