The food here is pretty good. I love hong kong style cuisine. I used to love going to R-Ice, yummy cafe, or Bluemoon. All of these restaurants either closed down or changed of ownership. It's been really difficult to find a restaurant with the baked rice. We so happened to stumble across this restaurant when we were shopping at Sprouts. Finally gave this place a try, food was decent but nothing to rave about. The salted egg shrimp with pumpkin, the pork chop rice , and the HK lemon tea drink was super delicious. I was disappointed with the beef chow fun and corn soup. Overall I would come back. Just FYI, the service here isn't great, just like any other Chinese restaurant around this area. 2/22/2020 was my first time here and my last time here. The place was mildly busy but fairly loud. I came with my family and were seated very promptly. The food wasn't too bad but a bit spicy for my grandma. Overall the food was a bit too salty 3/5 stars. Food was moderately priced as they have food combos. The good: the food without the bug in it was ok. The bad: The service. We ordered 4 different dishes and one of them was the wonton soup. I found a bug in my soup. We reported it to our waitress and she told us we were wrong and said it was a "vegetable" with a smile. We told her to look again and she was like, "Oh" and walked away. I could have gone without the extra protein in my soup. She also never gave us any water or napkins. It would have been nice if she at least acknowledged the bug instead of just leaving it in the bowl. It sat next to me the entire time dinner was served. I do not recommend eating here. read more

Had an amazing first time here today and just had to leave a review! First time having French toast at Asian restaurant and it was a true delight. Fantastic breading and alongside the wonderful honey came with it, well it was just a real treat for a toast aficionado like myself. My partners both enjoyed their respective meals as well with particular shoutout to the Portuguese curry for its unique and homey taste. Finally menu is so varied that i'm already looking forward to coming back. And as a final praise, the lovely lady who was our waitress discovered my wife's coin purse that had fallen out of her purse while cleaning and she literally ran out and tracked us down while our car was in-motion to return it to us. I ike this place! The food is authentic. I originally this place coming out of Sprouts. The windows were lined with pictures of food and I was hungry so I decided to try it out. The workers were pleasant. They greeted me at the door and assisted with taking my order. The first visit, I ordered War Wonton soup to go. I was pleasantly surprised to see that it was packed in two container, one for broth and the other had the wontons, meat and vegetables. The soup was very flavorful. It was full of various vegetables and meats. My second visit I ordered chicken and mushrooms lunch special. It was not as flavorful as the wonton soup, but still authentic. On our way to sprouts and decided to check this place out. The place is a bit of a hole in the wall. We got our first two entree but by the time we got our 3rd we were already full at that point. The salt baked spare ribs came out horribly. It was soggy and not what I expected. Legit chinese food place The place has a lot of legit chinese food dishes. Think clay pots, eggplants and such. There are lots of special dishes handwritten on the wall that they don't even put on the menu. We got the lamb pot which had pretty big portions, and was really tasty and well marinated. The food service is also good. Food came out at a reasonable time. Even though we were only 2 people, they gave us free soup--nice! The staff are all very friendly, and even suggested we don't order too much because the portions are pretty big. Talk about putting customers first! The inside is ok clean. Pretty much what you'd expect at a chinese restaurant. We saw on the menu they have afternoon tea that are very cheap and looked delicious, such as toast with milk tea and chicken wings. I just recently visited since it was just about time to go in for some barbecued pork Now. Usually I was happy telling people to go here. I have for years and have always found it to have consistent quality all around, but this time may be the last. For one, the service was unbelievably slow. Even so much as to watching orders go to customers who came after us and other tables seeing service first. I'm not sure what was up, but it took a second ask to get our drinks and a further wait before ordering. Then the food. Now usually they hit it in the field of great, but they missed it completely this time. I ordered a full plate of their barbecued pork while the other person in my group ordered the beef and broccoli. The pork is usually lovely in that it's sweet with their honey marinade and cooked slowly to become wonderfully tender. This time around I received a chunk of mostly fat with hardly any of that sweet sweet flavor. It just wasn't close to being in the same ballpark as it used to be. The beef and broccoli was tender yet in a weird thick glob of reflective salty oyster sauce with no other flavor outside of that. The potstickers that came with it felt lackluster this time around in overall taste. Besides that and they were a touch cold. Oddly, everything was a touch cold as if finished and left to wait a few. It's with a heavy heart, but I have to knock Macau to just an "eh" 1. We simply were not happy when we left - in terms of both service and food quality. read more

I have really only had their congee for takeout, so this review isn't about the dining experience or any other items they serve. This review is only about their CONGEE, which is soooooooo good bro. It's my comfort food. I can finish one container of pork and century egg congee all by myself in one sitting, and I'm not ashamed to say that. I've been coming to Macau Cafe even before I moved to Sacramento. My sister really loves coming here for their seafood. First off, I like that they have pictures all over the restaurant and on their menu also. The only bad thing is that when you're starving, it all looks good. Their menu is REALLY extensive, but I recommend going through it to get a sense of what they offer. Personally, I like menus that offer items off the beaten path. I can get chow mein and sweet and sour pork anywhere, so we either want to try a restaurant's specialties or unique offerings. On our last visit, we had the lobster lo mein, salmon fried rice and garlic short ribs. The lobster was the first to arrive and talk about wow factor! The guests I came with have never been to MC before, so this was an impressive first impression. We eagerly dug in. The next to arrive was the salmon fried rice, which was also just as tasty as the lobster noodles. The beef was the last to be served and we were getting pretty full. It was very delectable, but not as tasty as the two previous dishes. Service was not as good as the food. It was a busy Friday evening and the place was packed so it was understandable that service would be slower. However, the server only came by to take our order and drop off food. When the server dropped off the food, we asked for forks and waters, which never arrived. We were seated in the back and trying to flag down another staff member was near impossible so I had to get up every time we needed anything, including the check. In the past, we have come during the day when it was not busy. Service is much better when it's not the lunch or dinner rush. Good/authentic Chinese food, slooooow service. I've been coming here with my family for years, but because the service is slow so we don't frequent it as much anymore. Even when we're the ONLY ONES there... It's still slow. And it's not just the food that is slow, it's the workers too. They have absolutely no sense of urgency. It's not that I'm always in a rush, but if my family is the only table in the restaurant and we ask for utensils or water, it's not nice to feel like we're being ignored or waited on without respect. My mom always orders in Chinese, so not sure how good the workers are with English. One plus if you don't know Chinese is that the menu has pictures of everything. There are photos on the walls too of dishes and specials. One weird thing is that their plates are smaller than average - like the size of my hand. Makes it kinda a hassle to eat, but whatever. The restaurant is usually pretty clean. I went to the restroom once and wow there's a whole new world behind that door to the back haha. You have to walk down a long hallway to get to the actual one stall restroom. Kinda scary haha. Anyway, my favorite dishes are: Baked pork chop spaghetti - pretty self explanatory. It's not like a tangy Italian spaghetti, it's more orange color and cheesy. It's a breaded pork chop. Sounds weird, but try it! XO fried turnip cake - aka "loh bak go" this is better than the typical kind you find at dim sum places because it's pan fried with xo sauce, so it's a little spicy. I like the crispy outside too. Fu jian fried rice - aka "fook geen fahn" it's fried rice topped with meats, seafood, vegetables, and gravy. This restaurants version uses chicken, scallops, shrimp, mushrooms, and choy stems. The gravy really brings its all together. My mom and sister get wonton soup, which they like. I'm not a fan of wonton from restaurants (I like my mom's homemade kind). I've tried the red bean ice drink before, but it was kinda watery. Wouldn't order again. This restaurant has a large menu with lots of variety, so you're bound to find something for everyone. Give it a try if you have time, but don't expect fast service. They're located in the same lot as Sprouts and La Bou, so there's plenty of parking. I'd give 2.5 stars, but rounded down for the lackluster service. read more

Good Chinese pad... Good prices.... Good atmosphere... Made my return on a Saturday night... And it was pretty good! The place is decent size and has a variety on the menu! Employees were cool and friendly which is always a good thing! We ordered two sides of veggies... The spicy green beans and the Chinese broccoli with oyster sauce! Both were delicious! The spicy green beans was tender and had a burst of spice!! It had some minced pork with it and made it even better! It goes well with white rice! The Chinese broccoli was tender but I prefer to have it with garlic! We would definitely order the green beans and pass on the Chinese broccoli. We then had the salt and pepper chicken wings and they were tasty! Batter was delicious especially with the fried garlic bites!!! We would order these again! The chicken chow mien was next (Hong Kong style) and it was only average.... Chicken was so so and it came with a monster load of bean sprouts which I'm not a fan of.... Lastly, we got the honey glazed short ribs... Again... So so... A little too sweat and the meat wasn't tender... It was too chewy... We would pass on this as well! I was really REALLY happy to get decent Chinese food after being away from home for so long. I was a little iffy when I first decided to come here, but I now would love to go back every weekend. The place itself is in a little plaza with a Sprouts market (which I had to pop into afterwards). The shop was well lite and things were pretty clean; tables were not sticky at all and the floors were decently clean (for a chinese restaurant as I've seen many worse). We had Yang Zhou Fried Rice, Wor Won Ton soup and Salt/Pepper chicken wings. Drinks were the iced red bean drink and Hong Kong styled milk tea. First of all, the milk tea was one of the best I've ever tasted. At other places, they'd usually use condensed milk to sweeten the tea and it gets a bit sweet sometimes. Here, they just use creamer and let you add your own level of sweetness, a few shakes of sugar and it was the perfect drink for me. The red bean drink was really good too, but the red bean in the bottom kept getting mixed with the huge ice chunks and getting stuck in the straw. I don't have a single complaint with the fried rice, the won tons in the soup were a bit on the salty side but the over all dish was amazing. The chicken wings, they were a bit on the super oily side, I had oil dripping from the wings when I bit into it. The flavor was amazing and the crunch was good, but I would've liked it a bit better if it wasn't dripping with oil (at least a pat down would've been nice). Prices were pretty decent, every dish was about under 10. When I get the time to come to Sac. again, I'll be back here for sure. read more

Love this place for their chow mein and their salt and peper chicken wings. My friend and I love the variety of food they have on their menu. The employees are usually pretty attentive and very friendly. However, the service can be spotty at times depending on the waitresses but overall, it's great. I love the location of this restaurant and the amount of parking they have. I've been to this restaurant a couple of times already and will be a loyal customer. I have always enjoyed the won ton here and many have agreed it's very good, but today the soup was tasteless, like hot water with some vegetables thrown in. Adding soy sauce helped a bit. Most of the won ton was good but soup is an integral part of this meal. They charged us $2 for rice we ordered but it was not in the bag. I came to Macau Cafe for the first time earlier this week. I've got to say that for Chinese food in the area, it's not a bad place to go! This restaurant serves up traditional Chinese dishes at decent prices. Macau Cafe is definitely not like a Panda Express or other American Chinese Food type place. If you're expecting that kind of food, Macau Cafe would not be the place to go. I've grown up on traditional Chinese food, and restaurants like this, all my life. Macau Cafe definitely falls in the middle. I've definitely had better, but there are also definitely worse options out there. If you go to Macau Cafe for dinner, definitely order 'family style'. If you're going with a small party, I'd suggest everyone pick a different dish - meat, veggie, soup, ect. - and have it with rice. If you're not used to it, you may find yourself with some items in your dish you're not used to seeing. For example, we had a common chicken dish... and it comes served with its head on the plate. For me, I didn't pay it any mind, but it might scare people who haven't had it before. So be warned! Everything tastes fine though. Give it a shot! The restaurant itself is in decent shape. It's in a little plaza next to Sprouts. I didn't have any issues with cleanliness when I came here - which sometimes can be a problem with places like this. The staff were very accommodating and helpful. They kept the waters filled and got us the boxes and bags we needed so we could take home any leftovers we had. I've been here a few times back in high school and thought it was good. However after my recent visit, I didn't think it was very good. My family ordered from their $26 special menu where you pick 3 plates to eat from. My question is, are these orders smaller than the normal items on the menu? Our dishes were really small sized. I don't think it could fully feed a small family. Also we had ordered their braised fish clay pot and it took them a very long time to make it. I was sitting there drinking tea for maybe 20 minutes until they finally brought it to the table. Was it good though? I'd say it was mediocre. There was a lot of tofu but nothing much else. There wasn't much fish and there was like only 1 mushroom in there. The other 2 dishes were so-so. The only thing I liked was plain rice and even that came in an extremely small size. read more

We brought 2 young kids (5 &1.5) and they both loved their meal and the 5 yr old loved the lazy susan in the middle of the table. My family loves Macau Cafe! We always have a solid meal here. They're open pretty late for the neighborhood so we like coming here for late meals. My favorites are the salt & pepper tofu and the spicy green beans. Also the lobster noodles is a great choice if you want to splurge - huge portion and very tasty! I really like their pan fried noodles too, and the wor wonton soup was great. I haven't tried any of the Macau style dishes (I know, I need to!) or most of their very expansive menu.
