Going down a narrow street my passenger side mirror hit a parked delivery truck mirror, breaking my mirror. Went over to Machin's to get an estimate. Joe the estimator look at it and thought there was a chance to fix it without having to replace it. Sure enough a tech was able to get it working. I chose this auto body shop based on strong reviews. While the quality of the repair itself was good, the overall experience was challenging due to pricing, communication, and scheduling issues. Communication was responsive at first but declined significantly after the car was dropped off. Texts and emails about the repair timeline and rental car coordination often went unanswered, and my name was repeatedly misspelled despite being originally correct in their system. I was explicitly texted that my car would be ready by 4:00 PM on the scheduled pickup day, and the rental car company was notified as well. When I followed up later that afternoon due to no confirmation, staff appeared confused that I believed the car was ready, despite the prior message and the rental company being informed. I did not receive clarification until right before close, when I was told the car was not ready due to a missing mud flap. This message arrived to me on a day they closed at noon, which prevented pickup Friday and now created an issue for pickup altogether for me since I was leaving town Sunday and they aren't open weekends. I was told Monday the vehicle could not be held, and my boyfriend went out of his way to retrieve it. Approximately 2.5 hours after the car was picked up, I received a message stating that the remaining parts (mud flap and step pad) were available, which was confusing given that the vehicle had just been released and the urgency of pick up while I was out of town. The final cost exceeded $5,000, which felt excessive compared to the insurance estimate of $1,029, even accounting for differences. They did offer to complete the remaining work at my house, which I appreciated, but scheduling proved difficult due to delayed responses. Communication only resumed once I agreed to bring the vehicle back in myself. Positives: the repair looks good, the car was cleaned and waxed, and the automated phone system was convenient for scheduling. Overall, while the workmanship was solid, the high cost, inconsistent communication, and scheduling issues made this a frustrating experience. I would not return. read more

Daniel at Mackin's Auto Body on NE Broadway restored my faith in humanity today. I came in with a messed up, dented bumper from a hit and run, and I was planning to pay out of pocket. After carefully looking it over, Daniel offered to make it look the best he could, without charging me for a new bumper, by buffing and pushing out the dent. But wait- the best part- he did it FOR FREE! He was so kind, it took him 15 minutes, and I'm so so happy with how my car looks. While it isn't brand new, it's miles better than how it looked- and I can't believe it was free. I will be going to Mackin's auto body for all of my car problems in the future, and I recommend them to anyone in Portland who wants to be genuinely helped by good, honest people. I was the unfortunate recipient of what appeared to be a hit and run in a parking lot. Fortunately (and very kindly of the driver) they ended up reporting it to their insurance, which is how I ended up at Mackin. Mackin worked with the driver's insurance company, so I can't speak much to that aspect of the service, but the actual work was excellent. My bumper looks great. They partner with Enterprise in the area and the pickup and drop off process for the rental car was well organized. They also cleaned both the interior and exterior of my car, so I was rather pleased to pick up a clean shiny car at the end of service. I hope to never use their services again for car damages, but I absolutely recommend them and would return again in a heartbeat if needed. read more

TERRIBLE COMMUNICATION! I took my car in to get a estimate for some body work. Zack (eventually) provided an estimate via email. When I replied to his email that I had questions, he never replied. After a couple of days, I called and spoke to him. He needed to revise the estimate and said he would email the revision the next day. That was 5 days ago now. We took our 2014 Audi Q7 here on an insurance claim to repair damage after a deer ran into the side of our car in Montana. Mackins has consistently over promised and under delivered. Terrible communication. Poor service. They've broken things in our car that weren't previously broken. So many appointments and phone calls with no end in sight. They're a mess. We've had to take it back to them three times (so far) and they still can't seem to get things right. After doing the repairs and taking much longer than estimated, they sent our car home and the keyless entry and keyless start didn't work -- which was never previously a problem. Then to fix this, they kept our car for multiple more days... then said it was fixed. It wasn't. Then they told us they'd have to schedule something with the Audi dealership to have it programmed correctly... but we didn't hear anything from them for two more weeks. They forgot. Finally we called and they made more excuses. The keyless entry and keyless start all worked great when initially took our car to Mackins, but they broke it somehow... and we've had to schedule multiple more appointments, many phone calls and a major pain. It's still not resolved. Terrible communication. Poor service. Don't trust them. They're a mess. read more

Auto body shops generally have a negative (deserved) reputation. I initially found my way here via Yelp/Angie's list recommendations and was satisfied with the process: estimate, timeliness and quality of work, overall customer service. The second time I needed work done I referenced nextdoor.com. Most recommend Si's Auto Body on Glisan, but they were too far out on appointments. Mackin's was the second-most referred, so I went with them. Their estimate was lower and their facility was larger and much more professional. However, they were so busy to the point the front desk staff seemed stressed out. I almost used them for a third job (a small bumper indentation, see photo), but the estimator gave me the impression that this was too small of a job and just flippantly quoted "about $800." They will ask if you're paying out of pocket or going through insurance, but why should it matter? In the end, we were satisfied with their work. read more

Unfortunately I have needed the services of Mackin's multiple times, and always because someone hit me. Recently my car was hit while parked and the irresponsible person left no note. After going to another auto body shop, the preferred shop for Mercdes, and having a horrible experience the day I went to drop off the car for repairs (price tripled, after phone convo with owner negotiated price in middle, then went to drop car off a 2nd time and was told they needed it for 7 days which equates to $240 for car rental), I came to Mackin's who have always provided good service, constant communication and quality repairs. While their estimate was a bit higher then others, I trusted them. Additionally, they agreed to work on my car while I was on vacation negating the need for me to rent a car and incur an additional expense; important, especially when I am paying out of pocket. When I went to provide a deposit and sign the paperwork, Laura, at the front desk, was super helpful, friendly and efficient. Since the damage was a scrape, I waived the pre and post engine check which dropped the price making it equal to my other estimate. I dropped the car off on the way to the airport and from that moment until I picked the car up 8 days later, they texted me every single step of the way. Let me know that repairs were complete. That paint was done. That car was ready and would be held until I returned. When I questioned the paint being ready the same day since the Mercedes preferred shop said it takes 5-7 days to dry and hence the need to rent a car, Mackin's explained that after painting, the piece "bakes" and is ready in one day. I know the reviews for Mackin's, and basically all auto shops, are highly varied based on individual situation. Estimates are just that; there is always the possibility that they can find more damage when they remove parts and that the labor will take longer. In my recent repair, they did let me know they needed another 30 minutes in labor and I approved it. But by educating my on the pre and post engine test, and the fact that there was no real impact to my car, the overall price was less than the other estimate, including the additional 30 minutes of labor. When does that ever happen? Their communication is exceptional, even over communicating if possible. Hope I never need auto body work again, but if I do, I know I will go to Mackin's. read more

Wow, Mackin's did it again!!! As luck would have it, I scraped my front 1/4 panel backing out of our small garage. I was crest fallen as I had just picked up my car from Mackin last week-they fixed damage done when my car was backed into. Fifth body shop I went to, first four told me my car was a total and so did Mackin. I needed at least one estimate to submit to the at fault driver's insurance and I was willing to pay. As a courtesy, they gave me an estimate showing it was a total and said they could not in good consciousness repair it even if I paid the difference. They refused to accept any payment. Honesty and responsibility like this is all to rare. I hope I never am in another accident, but if I am Mackin will be my only choice. read more

I received repair services and parts continued to break and fall off after repairs. My visors had to be replaced along with seat parts on multiple occasions. After my visor busted again I was told by Mackins to go to the dealership for a fix. They were not going to honor their lifelong warranty for services. I came in today with a rattle/ squeak in the rear passenger door of my 2016 Toyota Tacoma . It was driving me absolutely crazy as every bump in the road was like a cricket chirping in my back seat . They did an amazing job. They got my car to me when I needed it, even though I'm sure it was hard to do. And the detail of the inside of my car was amazing! Estimate was just below $1500, so decided to pay cash versus going thru insurance. Picked up my car and handed the receipt (charged to insurance in error) and it was over $3000. Nothing beyond the original repair was approved by us or insurance. They made a "concession" of deducting a couple hundred only to later not return the full amount of our original cash deposit. Tried to work thru it with manager Shad Thibodeau, only to be shutdown despite having documentation for everything. read more

First, I need to state that I have been using Makin in Salmon Creek since they purchased the facility from The Velvet Hammer. After the recent experience with Makins, I WILL NEVER USE THEM AGAIN!!! When Makin performed the repairs on my Ford F350, they needed to remove my truck bed. After they were completed with the body work, they needed to get the bed lining resprayed, as the bed bolts needed covered. I told them that I wanted them to take the truck to Rhino Linings, as I had them install the initial bed lining less than a year earlier and I did not want to have any other company perform this work. Makin said that they wanted to take it to Vancouver Ford because the mobile unit would be there in a couple days and this would get the work completed faster than taking it to their shop on NE 117th Ave. (I assumed the mobile unit was from Rhino Linings) Less than a year later, the bed lining started lifting off all over the bed. Because I thought that Makin's had honored my request, I took the truck to Rhino Linings to have them fix the problems. They were stunned at the horrible application, and stated that they had never seen this happen before. They said that it looked like someone sprayed WD40 on the bed before the bed lining repair was applied. However, they told me that if I got a copy of the receipt from Makin, they would correct the bad application. When I went to Makin, I found out that the work was not done by Rhino Linings. Makin had allowed Vancouver Ford do the work. I DESPISE BEING LIED TO!!! Needless to say, Makins refuses to make it right. They refuse to pay Rhino Linings to restore my truck lining to where it was before Ford got their hands on it. Additionally, Makin lied to the insurance company about what happened in an effort to cover up their actions. I will not do business with a company that is dishonest and refuses to correct their actions. read more

Mackin's business practices are overtly dishonest. Learn from my experience and STAY AWAY. I took my Toyota in this week for fairly minor damage to the underside of the bumper. I decided to pay for it out of pocket, and so the car had not been looked at by an insurance adjuster. The job was supposed to take three days, but the next day I get an email informing me there was damage they hadn't seen before they took the bumper off and so they had to order more parts, adding another day and $1000 to the cost. I went in Friday to pick-up my car and Scott Ross kept explaining to me that they had to replace a radar device in the medallion (the Toyota insignia) on the front of my car because the whole part to which the medallion is attached had to be replaced. Why? I asked. It's not in the bumper or anywhere near the damage. He kept insisting that the entire front fo the car was part of the bumper, which it visibly is not. We go out to my car and I can see immediately that the part is original because it was dirty where it is covered by the hood. I ran my finger over the dirt and held it up to his eye. Scott doesn't not even attempt an explanation for his lie. He doesn't pretend to be surprised. He just says they will refund me the price of the radar device ($495). They do not offer to refund me the price of the whole piece of the body they claimed that had replaced but didn't, or for the labor to do any of this stuff they didn't actually do. Including the cost of an extra day for a rental car, I'm still out at least $500 over the original estimate. It was just blatant. They claimed to have ordered and replaced an expensive electronic component, when in fact they never touched that part of the car. If they don't have to deal with an insurance adjuster they will just pad whatever they want on to the cost of the repair. I will be reporting them to the Better Business Bureau, but you have been warned. read more

I got an estimate for damage sustained after my car was rear-ended back the week before Christmas. This process was professional, I got a nice printout with parts and labor estimation. Be careful dealing with them. I went and got written estimate from Alexander on 1/24/2024 to get my bumper replaced on my truck for insurance purposes. Was told 9.3 hours of work time and cost of $3747.43 and they would order new bumper and needed parts. They also explained potential hidden damages and needing more parts and possible more labor. I told estimator I needed truck repaired with as little down time as possible. He said he understood and would start repairs soon as I drop off truck at 7:30am and we scheduled it out for 1/6/24. I called them the day before to confirm and was told drop it off anytime between 7:30-4:30. I reminded them that estimator said they were going to work on it immediately at agreed upon appointment time. Morning of drop off they finally admit that no parts have been ordered and they are not going to work on truck today but rather wash and do "intake" of truck. I spoke to manager and requested they upload estimate so insurance company can pay me to take truck to get fixed at another shop that will do what they promised. Much to my surprise after talking to my insurance company Mackin estimator Alexander uploads new estimate for $3146.75(difference of $600.68). He changed all parts to non-OEM parts which he stood there two weeks before and said were inferior parts. He also deleted an hour of mechanical labor for $100. Seems like it was in direct retaliation for Mackin not doing what they promised or they were going to overcharge the insurance company. Just beware of this company. read more
