A few months ago, my fiancée took her car her for its inspection after reading all the good reviews here. We also asked for a quote on our hood latch release, as it was no longer able to pop the hood. They completed and passed the inspection, and gave us a quote for something like $400 for the hood release. I'm handy and that quote seemed ridiculous, so we declined the extra work and I said I'd do it myself. Less than a month after getting the car back, the front brakes started to grind. We're talking metal on metal. How is this possible? They just looked at it and should have failed it for pad depth, or at least *warned* us about it. I've attached photos to show the blatant neglect and disregard for safety (and the law). I highly doubt they looked at anything if they missed something so brazen. As for the hood latch, my lazy self finally got around to doing it. The only issue was a $11 bracket being bent. The whole mechanism didn't need to be replaced, but they wouldn't know because they didn't look at that either. Looking at all these positive reviews is perplexing. As someone who does all their own car maintenance and basic repairs, this is the most dishonest experience I've ever had with an auto shop. Took my car here after getting a quote approved for reimbursement for paint work around my windshield. I organized drop off two weeks ahead of time based on their calendar and was given a 5 day estimated time for repair. 3 days in, I had not gotten any updates. I called to follow up and they shared that they had found additional damage and needed to re-quote the work. This gave me big hesitation considering they were the 4th location I had gotten a quote from and no-one else saw any additional damage. I agreed to have them send a new quote over for approval to see what it was about. The next day, I learned they had not done any additional work to submit the quote based on a call I received to get the windshield back in. When I called to get an update, they screened my calls. Magically, my husband called and got an immediate answer. He asked to speak directly to Ralph, the collision manager. He informed my husband no progress was made because he basically didn't do his job. By the end of the week my car had been there 5 days and had not been touched. Naturally I was frustrated and confused. I organized to have the windshield reinstalled, and the car taken back with no work completed. Worst part? The company I authorized to put the windshield back in was able to just take my car and go..without Mac's calling me for approval. I was drawn to this location based on it being a family owned business, but going forward I will only work with corporate chains that have accountability in their actions. read more

Now under West Herr ownership, After 2 days of calling the current shop and the West Herr location, trying to get an appointment to service my vehicle and NO ONE answers the phone and no one has returned my voicemail at West Herr from this morning. Guess I am going to have to pay for my rotation somewhere else and other services for my vehicle somewhere else. read more

Estimator was rude and dismissive. Told me he wasn't interested in repairing the damage to my car, only replacing the broken glass. He pushed on the damaged area with his thumb and stated that he wasn't going to bother with the damaged area that would have let the window area leak water into the interior of the door. Insurance company already did the estimate and the estimator implied i could just pocket the difference insted of repairimg my car properly. Avoid this chop shop with all due speed. read more

Very dishonest. Never fixed a noise problem after accident. When I brought it back they said I did it after accident totally lied.

Used Mac's yesterday as I had a soft tire and Goodyear (which I have used forever) on Jefferson is now closed. Called and made an appointment the day before for 8am Wednesday, got right in, and was back on the road by 9:30am. Walt (who used to work at Goodyear) who took care of me is great. I was treated well, informed of the problem, and repaired in no time. The price for repair was a little higher than Goodyear, but this place is close to home, and I received good service. One thing I noticed while waiting is that all 3 of the guys working the lobby were honest, professional, and upfront with everyone coming in or calling and that's rare, even if it wasn't the best news, they were above board. I will be back, as they also do oil changes, etc and repair work. read more

I began coming to Mac's twenty years ago and have never considered taking my car anywhere else. This is one of the most customer-centered establishments I've ever encountered and have never met any employee there who does not convey respect and friendliness to all patrons. It starts with the front desk staff, who have all been terrific to deal with over the years. All work needed on my vehicle has been discussed thoroughly and clearly with me ahead of time, estimates have been accurate, and the work has always been done to my full satisfaction. The quality of workmanship at Mac's in my experience has always been top grade and I have never felt that I was overcharged, treated unfairly, or in any way deceived or talked into repairs that were not necessary. This is a business that clearly expects a strong work ethic of all its employees, and it shows. Mac's is truly one of Rochester's finest! You will not be disappointed. read more

I have never had amazing customer service when it comes to repairing a car. Sure, I've had some nice dudes work on my car... but I wouldn't call it "customer service".... I didn't even ever THINK about that being a possibility. Then, a coworker slammed into my parked car. Awesome. $2.5K of damage and 5 days in the shop. Equally awesome. So, then Amica (coworker's insurance) sent a list of places they have worked with in Rochester (I'm new to the area). I arbitrarily picked Mac's and they were able to fit me in a few days later. The rental car agency met me AT Mac's so I didn't have to waste time and/or bother someone for a ride. Swell. Mac's called me to update me on my car's progress. Oh, how thoughtful! Just when I felt that they couldn't be any sweeter, when I picked up my car... THERE WAS A CARNATION ON THE SEAT. W.T.F.... is Mac's trying to date me? Because I'm might be receptive to it... Anyway, besides the customer service, they did a great job replacing my door, working with the insurance and not giving me a headache. read more

Looking for a good mechanic, I had heard good things about Mac's II. I knew they were more expensive than many of the other mechanics around, but I figured the price would be worth it for the peace of mind that I was getting quality service. I took my car there for an oil change, and on the way, noticed one of the wiper arms was loose. I asked if it'd be a problem for them to tighten it while they were working on the car (and that it wouldn't be a problem if not- it was a matter of tightening a bolt and I would have had no issue doing it on my own). They said "of course!", and I left happy. When I came back to pick up my car, I found that "of course" meant "for $9"... to tighten a bolt. They also charged another $8 to top off engine coolant. The service itself was just fine, but the nickel and diming left a bad taste in my mouth. I don't think I'll be back. read more

I came to Mac's II for an inspection and an oil change. The people that work there couldn't have been nicer and the prices were very reasonable. They also offered a first time customer discount! Mac's II has the nicest and most helpful staff. People treat you with respect and kindness like a close friend, and they do the most excellent work on cars. I had an ABS issue and they fixed it up lickety-split and helped me out through the entire process. When comparing quotes between several other mechanics, they were by far the most inexpensive, and the most friendly about it. These are people who really want to help you and your car. They love what they do and it shows. I always go here for everything - oil change, alignment, state inspection, other accidents and issues (battery, axle, ABS, brakes, etc.). This review has been on my mind for 25+ years. Irrelevant, you say? Maybe or maybe not. I want to share my experience as a youth and how Ken Gan, the owner, dealt with the matter. My elderly father's Cadillac was rear ended while visiting me in Rochester. It wasn't as bad a damage as only the trunk lid, and not even the bumper, had to get replaced. I inquired about availability and explained that I had to drive it back to NJ/NY where my parents lived in 3 week's time. Ken said they could take it in right away. Since Mac's was less than a mile away from work, I worked at the old Xerox (now L3 Harris) building location on Jefferson Road, I brought it there and I could check on the progress. Nothing happened in two week's time. Mac's claimed that they were waiting on the trunk lid. Interestingly, I pointed out that the new trunk lid has been sitting ON the existing old damaged one for some time now. Also, Valley Cadillac dealership is literally 0.5 mile away. So, I had a hard time believing that if they had any "small parts" issues that they couldn't be resolved quickly. They immediately started working on the car as the car was moved inside. They now only had a few days to finish it. When I went to pick up the car, I was completely appalled to see that the white trunk lid was very obviously painted a different shade of white compared to the rest of the car. Ken said they would fix it. He understood that I had to drive it to NJ/NY that weekend. He confirmed to make sure there were funds in the bank so he could cash the payment check. I found it odd that he would ask this since it was an insurance check that he received; not a personal one. Two days later when I returned to pick up the car, nothing was done. At this point, I had to drive to NJ/NY and Ken knew it. I confronted him that he said he was going to repaint it. Ken shrugged his shoulders. He acknowledged that while the paint, and I quote, "It should have matched", he said that what bothered him more was the paint overspray onto the brake lights due to bad taping job. The paint was an obvious mismatch and yet he was worried about the tape job. He then added that white was a difficult color to match, same with black, blue, red and a few other colors he rattled off. I called out that he pretty much named most colors. He laughed... This event was such a poor experience that it has festered in me over the years and stayed fresh in my mind. Unfortunately, it has been the foundation for my general cynicism and distrust of body shops. Clearly to me, Ken took advantage of my youth and inexperience in dealing with these situations. He knew that I wouldn't have a choice but to pick the car up unless I decide to take on any travel change costs. What was more disturbing was his body language of "I screwed you and you can't do anything about it as I already cashed the check". To be fair, this was 25+ years ago. Ken was probably in his mid 30's at the time. A lot of life learnings could have occurred since then as he is likely in his 60's by now. This just goes to show that what you do in life could form lasting impressions. Unfortunately, this was my first and lasting impression. I do hope that your experience will be better. read more

This is a terrible business. Please take your vehicle to another shop although your insurance company asks you to take your vehicle to them. I think they give low quotes and that is the reason the companies recommend them but, the work is shoddy, incomplete and potentially puts your life in danger. We have had two separate instances where their work has been below par and downright dangerous. The first time, about 3 years ago, our van was referred to this shop by our insurance company. We went out of town immediately after taking delivery of the vehicle and the vehicle stalled in the expressway in NJ at 9PM. Not safe and it was scary with young children in the car. We had to be towed and we spent a night in the motel as we tried to get a shop to work on it the next day. The fuel line was not properly fit and had come off. The repair shop that fixed it said that clearly this was human error. Unfortunately, the vehicle had undergone service at our dealership the week before it went to Mac's Autoservice II and the two of them pointed their fingers at each other. Sadly my current insurance recommended that we take our vehicle to them again recently. Same manager - I should have walked away then! The day I got the vehicle back, the heater did not work and I had to take it back to them as they had not flushed the system properly. A couple of weeks later, the vehicle stalls on the expressway! Really dangerous as I was on the fast lane. They did not flush the engine coolant system properly and had left an air bubble in it. The manager tried to downplay the seriousness of the situation. They have wasted many hours of my time and have put my and my family's life in danger twice. I feel compelled to write this review so other customers do not unwittingly get sucked into taking their vehicle to this shop. State laws allow us to take the car to any company but we go to these shops because of the convenience and time. I was reluctant to take the car to this company this time but I was told by my insurance that it would take a few days for them to send an appraiser to a different shop of my choice. In retrospect, I would have saved a lot of time and not put my life in danger if I had waited and taken the car to a reputable repair shop. read more

Slimy scumbags. If you want to be scammed, where they don't thoroughly check and do a half completed job, here's the perfect place! Towed my car first thing at 9 a.m. Car didn't get diagnosed until almost 5 oclock closing time. I was advised that the car had to stay there overnight to be looked at the next day cause they needed to diagnose the car and check the codes. Ok fine. Next day got a call at 10:30 a.m. that it was going to be a throttle body change and it only takes an hour to change it. Hours passed and was told by a guy named Walter that it won't be fixed until 5 p.m. Also they don't know how to turn the ABS light off but "it may or may not go off by itself" Questions are do you know what you're doing? How do you not know how to turn the ABS lights off? Why did you not do a full diagnose? I would give this review 1/2 a star if I could.$675 was the final bill. On top of it, Walter said the car would need to be there another day to check additional codes on why the traction light, ABS and AWD lights were still lit. Why the next day cause it took them that long to fix throttle as well as other cars that it was quarter til closing time so they " didn't have time" Ridic poor customer service. I had the car towed to your shop trusting you that you would do a full inspection - not half inspection. $675 + going home with a half fixed car. Is it even safe to drive? read more

Most people will not write a review unless they had a bad experience. Well at Mac's II I was treated with the up-most respect. From the start they were friendly and open about the entire process. They walked me through in detail what they where going to do and the cost. Prices were fair and they delivered. I kept waiting for the hammer to fall and hear "well while we were under the hood we found this..." But they were fully honest with me and completed the job right on time like they promised, and exactly at what the quoted me.. even a few bucks less. If you need any service done on your car near the Henrietta area there is no discussion on where to take it. Macs II !!! Oh yeah and the shuttle service was perfect got me to work early and picked me up right on time. read more

Jeff contacted me and was very apologetic about the miscommunication on the date screw up. My day of the week was on their books for a Friday even though Thursday was the day they had told me on the phone. It had to be a mistake on their part as they do not do doll ups on a Friday! While I was extremely upset initially, Jeff smoothed things over. It won't account for the messy car for the event I had to go to on Saturday, But he went a long way in making things right. A good service recovery that could have been avoided by his team communicating this as soon as it happened instead of allowing me to fester and then writing a poor review. I brought my '08 Subaru Outback into Mac's Auto Service ll, today for work for the first time, not quite knowing what to expect. Not only was my car taken care of, I was as well. The customer service waiting area was bright, clean and very comfortable with all the amenities one might need. I was shuttled to and fro, they repaired my front and rear brakes, caught a light that was out, found a screw in my front tire and noticed I needed new wipers. Everyone was extremely helpful and pleasant. I'd like to say an extra thank you to Edward Fries (Service Manager) who personally made sure I had a great experience at Mac's. My car was hit and their insurance company gave Mac's as a repair shop. I took the car there and Jeff emailed me a quote in less than 2 hours. the insurance company took another 2 weeks, but finally gave the ok. i called Jeff and he set up a time for me to bring the car in, gave a time to have it completed and off i went. No surprise they found more stuff wrong that could not be seen and Jeff contacted the insurance company and took care of the additional charges. He called me to tell me of the problems, told me that the insurance company will take care of it and pay him directly. He then gave me a new date for completion. the car was ready when he said, looked great and, much to my surprise, they took the time to wash the car, dress the tires and clean the interior! the icing in the whole thing was the flower on the seat. now, i'm a guy but the though they took was above and beyond. the next time any of my cars need body work or mechanical work i know where i'm going! read more

Less than two years ago I had Mac Automotive put in a radiator for me today I had to have it replaced the honor the warranty on the radiator but they charge me full price for the installation almost $300 I believe they should have put it in for free or at least half the labor cost I would pay for read more

I and my wife were customers of Macs 2 for several years despite the prices they charge as we had been convinced they knew what they were doing. Last year we has them replace a clutch in my wife's car and exactly one year later we were back for another. Only 6,900 miles later and both of us have been driving standard transmission vehicles for decades. They covered the cost of the new clutch but charged us $800 for the labor and refused to give any explanation for the clutch failing. When pressed, Dean (manager?) tried to blame the whole thing on our driving. Very weak. A few days later as I followed my wifes car in mine I noticed smoke pouring from under her car, looked like it came from the transmission. Not having any faith left in Macs 2's abilities I took her car to Van Bortel who specializes in Subaru's, hers is an Outback, and they had to repair the seal on the transmission which had been damaged during the clutch repair. So, now I am out close to $1000 altogether due to Mac's 2's shoddy workmanship. They have ignored my e-mails and refused when I had a mediator contact them to try to work it out. This is not over. I will tell everyone I know to avoid this dishonest shop with it's clearly undertrained staff. Nice looking shop with lots of expensive tools...I guess they ran our of money when it came to hiring mechanics and management. read more

Some family members of mine have been to Mac's in the past so I figured I would give them a shot. I had a repair that I needed done quickly (broken hood release latch) and not only did they see me that day, they had the part I needed and were done 90 minutes later. They were the only shop that would even see me on such short notice, and the fact that they were able to repair everything that day rather than just give me a temporary fix was awesome. I'll definitely remember this the next time I need some work done on my car that I can't do myself. read more

I took my car to this mechanic as it was suggested by AAA and I had literally the worst experience I have ever had. I was charged $120 for 5 minutes of diagnostic work. The customer service you hear about is just a pleasant voice but i have had much better customer service at other mechanics. The worst part of the service was it took a quarter tank of gas to replace my starter. Overall I found this business to be the closest thing to theft that is still consider legal. read more
